Class 8 Trucks Operating On Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel With Particulate Filter Systems: A Fleet Start-Up Experience

Previous studies have shown that regenerating particulate filters are very effective at reducing particulate matter emissions from diesel engines. Some particulate filters are passive devices that can be installed in place of the muffler on both new and older model diesel engines. These passive devices could potentially be used to retrofit large numbers of trucks and buses already in service, to substantially reduce particulate matter emissions. Catalyst-type particulate filters must be used with diesel fuels having low sulfur content to avoid poisoning the catalyst. A project has been launched to evaluate a truck fleet retrofitted with two types of passive particulate filter systems and operating on diesel fuel having ultra-low sulfur content. The objective of this project is to evaluate new particulate filter and fuel technology in service, using a fleet of twenty Class 8 grocery store trucks. This paper summarizes the truck fleet start-up experience.

Field Experience with the Detroit Diesel Electronic Control System

Electronics are rapidly expanding in the diesel on-highway truck market and will soon represent the dominant technology for heavy-duty diesel engine fuel control. The strategy choices for the diesel engine manufacturer required to meet legislated exhaust emissions, while offering competitive fuel economy, all point toward electronic fuel injection control. The industry's transition to electronic fuel injection systems was initiated with the introduction of the Detroit Diesel Electronic Control system (DDEC) in 1985. This introduction precipitated the tremendous learning curve in the application of electronics to the heavy-duty truck market for both the engine manufacturer and the vehicle builder. This has been an on-going process as the vehicle builder's production line mix completes the transition from mechanically controlled to electronically controlled diesel engines.

The Detroit Diesel DELTA Engine for Light Trucks & SUV's - Year 2000 Update

Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC) is developing the DELTA 4.0L V6 engine, specifically for the North American light truck market. This market poses unique requirements for a diesel engine, necessitating a clean sheet engine design. DELTA was developed from a clean sheet of paper, with the first engine firing just 228 days later. The process began with a Quality Function Deployment (QFD) analysis, which prioritized the development criteria. The development process integrated a co-located, fully cross-functional team. Suppl iers were fully integrated and maintained on-site representation. The first demonstration vehicle moved under its own power 12 weeks after the first engine fired. It was demonstrated to the automotive press 18 days later. DELTA has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to disprove historical North American diesel perceptions and compete directly with gasoline engines. This paper outlines the Generation 0.0 development process and briefly defines the engine.
