The experience accumulated with a prototype 1000 HP diesel electric tractor since 1969 is described. The new 1500 HP V220 diesel electric tractors are described along with some of the initial operation of these two units. Experience with the initial 1000 HP unit and the two 1500 HP tractors confirm the necessity of additional testing and experimentation to refine the design to get greater productivity with reduced operator fatigue. The unpredictability of the load and operating surface are major problems that present a real challenge to the engineer.

This paper describes the after-treatment technology that could be used to meet a future BS-VII standard, considering close-coupled SCR (cc-SCR) to help start NOx conversion earlier. Both active (Cu/Fe-SCR based) and passive (V-SCR based) systems have the potential to meet emission limits. V-SCR may be considered in the rear position because V-SCR shows a fast response with very low N2O formation. Next-gen V-SCR technology shows significantly improved performance and durability closer to Cu-SCR. The steady-state NOx conversions over Next-Gen V-SCR were better than BS-VI V-SCR in both fresh and aged-580°C/100h conditions. High durability was also observed after engine aging of 1000h (WHTC + high load). Another big challenge in BS VII could be the PN10 requirement. With enhanced filtration coating (EFC) technology, PN emissions drop drastically in comparison to Euro VI reference without EFC to meet a future BS VII.

A Comparative Study of Automotive System Fatigue Models Processed in the Time and Frequency Domain

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that frequency domain methods for calculating structural response and fatigue damage can be more widely applicable than previously thought. This will be demonstrated by comparing results of time domain vs. frequency domain approaches for a series of fatigue/durability problems with increasing complexity. These problems involve both static and dynamic behavior. Also, both single input and multiple correlated inputs are considered. And most important of all, a variety of non-stationary loading types have been used. All of the example problems investigated are typically found in the automotive industry, with measured loads from the field or from the proving ground.

A Comparison of Fatigue Life Estimation on the Frequency Domain with Test Data and Time Domain Calculations

This paper focus on some of the fatigue methodologies based on the frequency domain and how they can be used on the heavy vehicle industry. A calculation flow was developed which consist of two steps. At first the stresses on the desired frequency bandwidth are calculated using a finite element software and those are then used as inputs on a Matlab script that estimate the expected life using two different theories, Bendat’s narrow band and Dirlik. The proposed methodology is then compared with more established time domain calculations. At first a plain hand calculation with a simpler input is performed on both domains before evaluating the differences with a more complex random stress signal input. Finally, test data from a rig test is used to validate the frequency domain fatigue methods using real life data.

A Comparison of Time Domain and Frequency Domain Test Methods for Automotive Components

Frequency domain testing has had limited use in the past for durability evaluations of automotive components. Recent advances and new perspectives now make it a viable option. Using frequency domain testing for components, test times can be greatly reduced, resulting in considerable savings of time, money, and resources. Quality can be built into the component, thus making real-time subsystem and full vehicle testing and development more meaningful. Time domain testing historically started with block cycle histogram tests. Improved capabilities of computers, controllers, math procedures, and algorithms have led to real time simulation in the laboratory. Real time simulation is a time domain technique for duplicating real world environments using computer controlled multi-axial load inputs. It contains all phase information as in the recorded proving ground data. However, normal equipment limitations prevent the operation at higher frequencies.

A Contact Stress Model for Predicting Rolling Contact Fatigue

Predicting fatigue performance in concentrated contacts under thin film (or mixed) lubrication conditions has historically involved various empirical approaches. Typically a lubrication parameter is used in an experimentally derived equation to predict the expected rolling contact performance. However, this model doesn't explain the performance improvements. Enhanced finish bearings have exhibited longer life than standard finish bearings, especially when bearings are operated with thin EHL film. In this paper, the contact surfaces of test bearings were analyzed by using a micro-macro contact model in which the macro-contact was elastic contact, and the micro-contact was elastic-plastic contact. The interior subsurface stress maps were calculated from the real contact surfaces, which included the effects of roughnesses, waviness, and profiles.

A Field Performance Prediction Technique for Light Truck Structural Components

A method has been developed which allows prediction of the field performance of structural components based on prototype vehicle test procedures and results. Component designs can then be optimized by selecting prototype durability test objectives which more accurately reflect actual field usage. This procedure, which is based on fatigue damage calculations from component strain histories, has been successfully applied to non-safety related body, frame and suspension structural components of light trucks and vans.

In this paper, a simplified and systematic approach to integrate reliability and durability aspects in design process is presented. A six step process is explained with the help of examples. Two alternatives for gathering means and standard deviations for key parameters are discussed. First a DOE approach based on orthogonal arrays is presented. Second approach is based on Taylor Series expansion. An example of beam design is solved with both of these approaches. The Second example also considers the degradation with time in service.

A Fuzzy Logic Based Driver Fatigue Detection System

In this paper, we explain the process of designing fuzzy based analyzers which can be installed in a vehicle. These analyzers use some kinds of sensors to detect the driver fatigue. This system helps a driver to be alert during vehicle driving. We propose a fatigue detection method which works in different way from the previous systems. In this method using some tactile sensors, the system predicts fatigue before the driver falls asleep, while driver's alertness and reaction decreases and the probability of the accident increases. An alarm massage concentrates the driver attention while s/he is going to be fallen in sleep. An advantage of this kind of fatigue detection is that it doesn't interfere with the driver's habit in vehicle control and it resumes functioning only in critical moments.

METHOD of selecting sbaetiasfraicntogrsy for the transmissions and final drives of pneumatic-tired tractors that depends on a knowledge of average operating conditions is reported by John Borland. The well-known method of rating bearings on a fatigue basis is, according to tests carried out by Mr. Borland, a reasonably accurate way of predicting bearing life when loading conditions are definitely established. However, the tables that have been compiled by the bearing manufacturers are satisfactory for determining bearing life only of bearings subjected to a constant load at a constant speed. Since tractor transmissions are subjected to as many different loading conditions as there are speed changes provided in the tractor, tractor transmission bearings cannot be selected directly from these tables. They must be used in conjunction with the formula for determining a factor called weighted life.

A Method for the Characterization of Off-Road Terrain Severity

Highway and roadway surface measurement is a practice that has been ongoing for decades now. This sort of measurement is intended to ensure a safe level of road perturbances. The measurement may be conducted by a slow moving apparatus directly measuring the elevation of the road, at varying distance intervals, to obtain a road profile, with varying degrees of resolution. An alternate means is to measure the surface roughness at highway speeds using accelerometers coupled with high speed distance measurements, such as laser sensors. Vehicles out rigged with such a system are termed inertial profilers. This type of inertial measurement provides a sort of filtered roadway profile. Much research has been conducted on the analysis of highway roughness, and the associated metrics involved. In many instances, it is desirable to maintain an off-road course such that the course will provide sufficient challenges to a vehicle during durability testing.

A Methodology for Fatigue Life Prediction of Bearing Retainers

In an effort to reduce the design cycle time and to meet increasingly demanding applications, an improved procedure for bearing retainer design has been introduced. This paper discusses a methodology which allows the designer to predict the life and failure modes of a retainer under application conditions. Specific attention is given to the case of fatigue of the retainer due to the dynamic interactions between the retainer, rolling elements and races. The methodology which has been developed for the life prediction of retainers is based on the dynamic loads and retainer structural integrity. Central to this technique is the ability to predict the loads imposed on the retainer as a function of design and application conditions. The bearing analysis code ADORE has been used for this purpose. The technique will be discussed by means of an example.

Overloading of trucks can easily cause damage to roads, bridges and other transportation facilities, and accelerate the fatigue loss of the vehicles themselves, and accidents are prone to occur under overload conditions. In recent years, various countries have formulated a series of management methods and governance measures for truck overloading. However, the detection method for overload behavior is not efficient and accurate enough. At present, the method of dynamic load identification is not perfect. No matter whether it is the dynamic weight measurement method of reconstructing the road surface or the non-contact dynamic weight measurement method, little attention is paid to the difference of different vehicles. Especially for different vehicles, there should be different load limits, and the current devices are not smart enough.

A STD Bus, PC-DOS based data acquisition system has been developed for collecting ride, function and fatigue data from field vehicles. The system is modular with a channel capacity of 8 to 32 channels when configured with a full set of conditioning modules. Several alternate storage media systems are available to provide efficient data storage and transfer to standard personal computer systems for analysis. A modest system extension expands the system to enable it to become a flexible development tool for closed-loop control concepts and algorithms.

This paper describes method which experimentally reproduces the most prevalent bearing fatigue failure modes experienced in ball and roller bearing applications. Generally, bearing fatigue life is divided into two groups. One is a surface-originating type of fatigue. The other is a subsurface-originating type of fatigue. The mechanism of each type of fatigue has been studied. Bearing materials were developed for long-life based on the study of the mechanism of fatigue. However, the condition of the evaluation method, or life test, may be different from the actual application conditions. For instance, the subsurface-originating type of fatigue is tested under extremely heavy loads. The surface-originating type of fatigue is tested with severely contaminated lubrication. There is the possibility that the evaluation methods do not simulate the failure modes that are actually present in the field.

A New Method to Accelerate Road Test Simulation on Multi-Axial Test Rig

Road test simulation on test rig is widely used in the automobile industry to shorten the development circles. However, there is still room for further improving the time cost of current road simulation test. This paper described a new method considering both the damage error and the runtime of the test on a multi-axial test rig. First, the fatigue editing technique is applied to cut the small load in road data to reduce the runtime initially. The edited road load data could be reproduced on a multi-axial test rig successfully. Second, the rainflow matrices of strains on different proving ground roads are established and transformed into damage matrices based on the S-N curve and Miner rules using a reduction method. A standard simulation test for vehicle reliability procedure is established according to the proving ground schedule as a target to be accelerated.

A Novel Method for Determining the Stress-Life Exponent in Some Fatigue Experiments

Reliability research in hybrid ceramic bearings involves life testing of hybrid bearings and ceramic specimens. New materials for bearings like advanced ceramics have emerged for evaluation in recent years. In fatigue testing to determine the stress-life relationship, the number of sample size in life testing can be limited by consideration of cost and testing time. In the testing of ceramics, some researchers have relied on the use of a stepwise multiple loading approach to increase the failure data points. In this paper, a maximum likelihood method is applied to test data with multiple loads to estimate the stress-life exponent. This method treats the data at different loads or steps at once. Test data from three fatigue experiments using silicon nitride materials have been analyzed to obtain the stress-life exponents. Also, Weibull plots of the ‘equivalent lives' have been presented for all test specimens tested at different loads and load steps.

It is apparent that a new generator and regulator design is needed to supply the additional electrical loads and meet the requirements for durability, reliability, and environmental protection on earthmoving equipment. The author discusses the d-c and alternator type systems which have been used to supply electrical needs. A detailed analysis of the integral charging system is presented. This system overcomes many of the shortcomings of the present electrical systems and, because it has a minimum number of moving parts, it is potentially the most reliable charging system in use on heavy duty equipment.
