Exterior Lighting Recommendations for Urban Air Mobility and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Aircraft

2022-10-12
WIP
ARP7216
This document covers external lighting for Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (E-VTOL) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM) vehicles. It discusses lights that may be installed both to meet regulatory requirements as well as for customer comfort and aircraft recognition. It also discusses the differences between UAM vehicles and other aircraft and how those differences impact the lighting.

Lighting for Camera Video Systems

2023-01-11
WIP
ARP8467
The scope of this ARP is area lighting requirements for commercial airplane camera video systems. Specifically, lighting recommendations are given for the GMCS (ground maneuver camera system) and FDEVSS (flight deck entry video surveillance system). This ARP affects all three A-20 Aircraft Lighting Committees: crew station flight deck, exterior, and interior. Future updates could include military applications.

Lighting, Aircraft Exterior, Night Vision Imaging System (NVIS) Compatible

2022-09-23
CURRENT
ARP4392
This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) describes the recommended performance levels for equipment located on the aircraft exterior which produces radiant energy which will provide desired information when viewed with NVIS goggles. These performance intensities, normally stated in candelas for visible light, are modified to consider the goggle spectral response range. Where necessary, location of the equipment on the airplane is specified. The spectral emission characteristics may or may not include visible light. Whether or not visible energy is emitted, this document will refer to these items of equipment as "lights".

HISTORICAL
AS8017
This Aerospace Standard will define minimum light intensity in terms of "effective intensity" as defined in paragraph 3.5 of this standard and specified vertical and horizontal directions about the longitudinal and vertical axis of the airplane. It will also define flash rate and color for the anticollision light system.

Minimum Performance Standard for Aircraft Position Lights

2022-02-02
CURRENT
AS8037D
This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) establishes minimum performance standards for new equipment position lights. This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) defines minimum and maximum light intensity in terms of candelas in vertical and horizontal directions about the longitudinal, vertical, and lateral axes of the aircraft. It also defines color tolerances in terms of limiting chromaticities for the light emitted from the position lights. It is not intended that this standard require the use of any particular light source such as quartz-halogen, incandescent, or any other specific design of lamp.

CURRENT
ARP6833
This document contains guidance for designers, specifiers, regulatory personnel, purchasers, managers, and others who specify or use optical simulations of aircraft lights. All aircraft lighting will be considered interior, flight deck, and exterior lighting. Guidance on standard methods of analysis and presentation of data will be provided. Although this document concentrates on lighting, many of the principles covered will be helpful in other types of optical simulation, such as for displays, non-visible radiation, etc.
