This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) covers requirements for nickel-chromium coatings, black oxide or black phosphate coatings, and alternative coatings for aerospace hand tools.
The thin wall series sockets and box wrenches covered herein are those designed for general usage on aerospace engine 12-point threaded fastener hardware. Standardized wrench clearance dimensions are given, as well as a stringent test procedure to ensure reliability.
This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) covers handles and attachments for use with sockets and crowfoot wrenches in aerospace applications involving high torque, limited clearances, and generally clean conditions. This document provides additional requirements beyond ASME B107.110 Category 10, appropriate for aerospace use. Inclusion of dimensional data in this document is not intended to imply all the products described therein are stock production sizes. Consumers are requested to consult with manufacturers concerning lists of stock production sizes.
This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) covers high strength thin wall (commercial) metric sockets, universal metric sockets, metric box wrenches and metric torque adaptors which possess the strength, clearances, and internal wrenching design so configured that, when mated with 12 point fasteners conforming to the requirement of ISO 4095, they shall transmit torque to the fastener without bearing on the outer 5% of the fastener's wrenching points. This standard provides additional requirements beyond ASME B107.100 and B107.5M appropriate for aerospace use. Inclusion of dimensional data in this document is not intended to imply that all of the products described herein are stock production sizes. Consumers are requested to consult with manufacturers concerning lists of stock production sizes. The dimensional limits of box and combination wrench lengths have been established to provide configuration control for tool storage applications.

This SAE Metric Aerospace Standard (MA) covers metric double end flare nut wrenches that are designed with the following requirements: a Non-distorting usage. b Possessing the strength, clearances, and internal wrenching design to be used on hydraulic tube fittings that conform to the requirements of SAE J514. c Transmitting torque to tube fittings without bearing on the apex of fitting wrenching points. Inclusion of dimensional data in this document is not intended to imply that all of the products described herein are stock production sizes. Consumers are requested to consult with manufacturers concerning lists of stock production sizes.
This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) covers open box end flare nut wrenches. These wrenches are designed for nondistorting usage by transmitting torque to tube fittings without bearing on the apex of the fitting wrenching surfaces.
This report covers torque indicating and limiting devices, also referred to as torque wrenches or torque handles, accessories used to obtain predetermined torque values on nuts, bolts, plumbing, related fasteners and friction of rotating parts, etc; calibration equipment and recommended schedules; proper use of tools and chronic torque problems.
This Aerospace Standard (AS) covers reversible ratchet handles and high strength thin wall commercial sockets, flexible sockets, box wrenches and torque adapters designed for general usage which possess the strength, clearances, and an internal wrenching design so configured that, when mated with 12-point fasteners conforming to the requirement of AS 870, they shall transmit torque to the fastener without bearing on the outer 5% of the fastener's wrenching points.

This study addresses the adequacy of sockets, wrenches, and torque adapters conforming to AS954 to wrench 12 point fasteners with wrenching configurations conforming to AS870C. Reported wrenching problems with smaller sizes are investigated through examining the combined tolerances on the fasteners and wrenches, conducting torque testing on typical high strength lock nuts. Possible solutions to correct these wrenching problems are presented.
