Analysis of Ambient Gas Entrainment Processes in Intermittent Gas Jets by LIFA Technique

Time-resolved and local ambient gas entrainment processes in intermittent gas jets with a range of injection conditions were evaluated by a LIFA (Laser-Induced Fluorescence of Ambient gas) technique. The gas injection conditions tested were: mean discharge velocity, um; mean discharge turbulence intensity, u′m; kinematic viscosity of the gas jet, ν; specific gravity of the gas jet, ρj; and of the ambient gas, ρa. Experimental results showed that the entrainment of jets are enhanced with higher eddy kinematic viscosity, νt, measured by a hot wire anemometer. In conclusion, the mean jet concentration was approximated with only one parameter, (ρj/ρa)D2/[(ν+νt)Δt].

Description of Diesel Emissions by Individual Fuel Properties

The effects of several fuel property variables on the emissions from a D.I. diesel engine were individually analyzed. The results showed that the smoke and dry soot increased with increased kinematic viscosity, shorter ignition lag, and higher aromatic content, especially at high equivalence ratios. Over the whole range of equivalence ratios, SOF depended on and increased with only ignition lag. The NOx improved slightly with increased kinematic viscosity, higher ignitability, and decreased aromatic content. The unburnt HC also improved with decreased kinematic viscosity and higher ignitability. The distribution shape of distillation curves had little influence on the emissions.

Development of a Micro-Reactor HC-SCR System and the Evaluation of NOx Reduction Characteristics

To reduce NOx emissions from diesel engines, the urea-SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system has been introduced commercially. In urea-SCR, the freezing point of the urea aqueous solution, the deoxidizer, is −11°C, and the handling of the deoxidizer under cold weather conditions is a problem. Further, the ammonia escape from the catalyst and the generation of N2O emissions are also problems. To overcome these disadvantages of the urea-SCR system, the addition of a hydrocarbon deoxidizer has attracted attention. In this paper, a micro-reactor SCR system was developed and attached to the exhaust pipe of a single cylinder diesel engine. With the micro-reactor, the catalyst temperature, quantity of deoxidizer, and the space velocity can be controlled, and it is possible to use it with gas and liquid phase deoxidizers. The catalyst used in the tests reported here is Ag(1wt%)-γAl2O3.

Improvements in Diesel Combustion with After-Injection

The effect of after-injection on exhaust gas emissions from a DI diesel engine with a common rail injection system was experimentally investigated for a range of operating conditions. The results showed that over the whole of the operating range, some reduction in smoke emissions can be achieved with after-injection, without deterioration in thermal efficiency and other emission characteristics. The optimum quantity of after-injection for smoke reduction is 20% of the total fuel supply, and the optimum timing is just after the main injection. Visualization in a bottom view type engine showed that with after-injection, soot formation in the main-injection decrease more due to a smaller quantity of fuel than without after-injection, and soot formation with after-injection is insignificant.

Kinetic Modeling of Ammonia-SCR and Experimental Studies over Monolithic Cu-ZSM-5 Catalyst

Ammonia-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems have been introduced commercially in diesel vehicles, however catalyst systems with higher conversion efficiency and better control characteristics are required to know the actual emissions during operation and the emissions in random test cycles. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an effective approach when applied to SCR catalyst development, and many models have been proposed, but these models need experimental verification and are limited in the situations they apply to. Further, taking account of redox cycle is important to have better accuracy in transient operation, however there are few models considering the cycle. Model development considering the redox reactions in a zeolite catalyst, Cu-ZSM-5, is the object of the research here, and the effects of exhaust gas composition on the SCR reaction and NH3 oxidation at high temperatures are investigated.

Research on HC Adsorption Emission System

This paper describes a technology for reducing cold hydrocarbons (HCs) emissions during cold engine start-up. The technology consists of a new HC adsorption system and a method for detecting the deterioration of adsorption performance of the HC adsorber. This active type HC adsorption system is added to Honda's current SULEV system technologies (high performance catalysts, catalyst quick warm-up control, and high accuracy A/F control), for further reduction of cold HC emissions at start-up. In addition, a new sensor has been developed to detect humidity in the exhaust gas, which in turn is used to predict performance deterioration of the HC adsorber. During FTP (Federal Test Procedure) testing, this emission control system has achieved a reduction of more than 70% in cold HC emissions during cold start, and a reduction of about 60% in NMOG weighted mean (WM) value, as compared to without the HC adsorption system.

Study on Combustion and Exhaust Emissions Characteristics of Oxymethylene Dimethyl Ether Blends with Fischer-Tropsch Fuels in Diesel Engines

Synthetic fuels (e-fuels) synthesized from H2 and CO by renewable electricity are expected as the next- generation diesel fuels and two types of e-fuels have received extensive attention: Fischer-Tropsch (FT) fuel and Oxymethylene dimethyl ether (OME). In this study the effects of OME blending ratios with 0 to 50 vol.% in FT fuels on combustion, emissions and spray characteristics in diesel engines are investigated. The results suggest that the OME blends to FT fuels suppressed the deterioration in combustion efficiency under low intake oxygen concentration conditions. The smoke emissions of FT fuels and OME blended fuels were both lower than those of diesel fuel and decreased with the increase in the OME blend ratio, and the soot-NOx trade-off relation in diesel engines can be improved.
