Further Advances in Demonstration of a Heavy-Duty Low NOX System for 2027 and Beyond

Multiple areas in the U.S. continue to struggle with achieving National Ambient Air Quality Standards for ozone. These continued issues highlight the need for further reductions in NOX emission standards in multiple industry sectors, with heavy-duty on-highway engines being one of the most important areas to be addressed. Starting in 2014, CARB initiated a series of technical demonstration programs aimed at examining the feasibility of achieving up to a 90% reduction in tailpipe NOX, while at the same time maintaining a path towards GHG reductions that will be required as part of the Heavy-Duty Phase 2 GHG program. These programs culminated in the Stage 3 Low NOX program, which demonstrated low NOX emissions while maintaining GHG emissions at levels comparable to the baseline engine.

CARB Off-Road Low NOx Demonstration Program - Engine Calibration and Initial Test Results

Off-road diesel engines remain one of the most significant contributors to the overall oxides of nitrogen (NOX) inventory and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has indicated that reductions of up to 90% from current standards may be necessary to achieve its air quality goals. In recognition of this, CARB has funded a program aimed at demonstrating emission control technologies for off-road engines. This program builds on previous efforts to demonstrate Low NOX technologies for on-road engines. The objective was to demonstrate technologies to reduce tailpipe NOX and particulate matter (PM) emissions by 90 and 75%, respectively, from the current Tier 4 Final standards. In addition, the emission reductions were to be achieved while also demonstrating a 5 to 8.6% carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction and remaining Greenhouse Gas (GHG) neutral with respect to nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4).

Evaluation of Indrio’s Ammonia Sensor using a Diesel Fuel Based Burner Platform

This program involved the detailed evaluation of a novel laser-based in-exhaust ammonia sensor using a diesel fuel-based burner platform integrated with an ammonia injection system. Test matrix included both steady-state modes and transient operation of the burner platform. Steady-state performance evaluation included tests that examined impact of exhaust gas temperature, gas velocity and ammonia levels on sensor response. Furthermore, cross sensitivity of the sensor was examined at different levels of NOX and water vapor. Transient tests included simulation of the FTP test cycles at different ammonia and NOX levels. A Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer as well as NIST traceable ammonia gas bottles (introduced into the exhaust stream via a calibrated flow controller) served as references for ammonia measurement.

An Update on Continuing Progress Towards Heavy-Duty Low NOX and CO2 in 2027 and Beyond

Despite considerable progress towards clean air in previous decades, parts of the United States continue to struggle with the challenge of meeting the ambient air quality targets for smog-forming ozone mandated by the U.S. EPA, with some of the most significant challenges being seen in California. These continuing issues have highlighted the need for further reductions in emissions of NOX, which is a precursor for ozone formation, from a number of key sectors including the commercial vehicle sector. In response, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) embarked on a regulatory effort culminating in the adoption of the California Heavy-Duty Low NOX Omnibus regulation.[1] This regulatory effort was supported by a series of technical programs conducted at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI).

Detailed Emissions Characterization for Off-Road Applications: A DPF and non-DPF Engine Comparison

As agencies continue to focus on emissions compliance, low NOX discussions have started to propagate beyond the on-highway market. Nonroad applications, which contribute to 29% of the PM emissions and 11% of the NOX emissions in California, are being reviewed to understand the technological challenges and requirements for improved emissions performance. To help facilitate a nonroad low NOX technology demonstration, information from current engine and aftertreatment technologies required a detailed assessment. The following work will discuss the emissions characterization results from two non-road engine platforms. The intention of this study was to compare the emissions species from different approaches designed to meet Tier 4 emissions regulations. The platforms reflect available technology for DPF and non-DPF aftertreatment architectures.

Continuous Oil Consumption Measurement Using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

This paper describes a new method for measuring oil consumption using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). LIBS focuses a high energy laser pulse on a sample to form a transient plasma. As the plasma cools, each element produces atomic emission lines which can be used to identify and quantify the elements present in the original sample. In this work, a LIBS system was used on simulated engine exhaust with a focus on quantifying the inorganic components (termed ash) of the particulate emissions. Because some of the metallic elements in the ash almost exclusively result from lube oil consumption, their concentrations can also be correlated to an oil consumption rate. Initial testing was performed using SwRI’s Exhaust Composition Transient Operation Laboratory®(ECTO-Lab®) burner system so that oil consumption and ash mass could be precisely controlled.

Optimization of Surfactant and Catalyst Modified Urea-Water Solution Formulation for Deposit Reduction in SCR Aftertreatment Systems

Selective Catalytic Reduction is the primary method of NOX emission abatement in lean-burn internal combustion. This process requires the decomposition of a 32.5 wt. % urea-water solution (UWS) to provide ammonia as a reducing agent for NOX, but at temperatures < 250 °C the injection of UWS is limited due to the formation of harmful deposits within an aftertreatment system and decreased ammonia production. Previous work has sufficiently demonstrated that the addition of surfactant and a urea/isocyanic acid (HNCO) decomposition catalyst to UWS can significantly decrease deposit formation within an aftertreatment system. The objective of this work was to further optimize the modified UWS formulation by investigating different types and concentrations of surfactants and titanium-based urea/HNCO catalyst. Because there is a correlation between surface tension and water evaporation, it was theorized that minimizing the surface tension of UWS would result in decreased deposit formation.

Combination of Mixed Metal Oxides with Cu-Zeolite for Enhanced Soot Oxidation on an SCRoF

A push for more stringent emissions regulations has resulted in larger, increasingly complex aftertreatment solutions. In particular, oxides of nitrogen (NOX) and particulate matter (PM) have been controlled using two separate systems, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and the catalyze diesel particulate filter (CDPF), or the functionality has been combined into a single device producing the SCR on filter (SCRoF). The SCRoF forgoes beneficial NO2 production present in the CDPF to avoid NH3 oxidation which occurs when using platinum group metals (PGM) for oxidation. In this study, mixed-metal oxides are shown to oxidize NO to NO2 without appreciable NH3 oxidation. This selectivity leads to enhanced performance when combined with a typical Cu-zeolite catalyst.

CARB Low NOX Stage 3 Program - Final Results and Summary

Despite considerable progress over the last several decades, California continues to face some of the most significant air quality problems in the United States. These continued issues highlight the need for further mobile source NOX reductions to help California and other areas meet ambient air quality targets mandated by the U.S. EPA. Beginning in 2014, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) launched a program aimed at demonstrating technologies that could enable heavy-duty on-highway engines to reach tailpipe NOX levels up to 90% below the current standards, which were implemented in 2010. At the same time, mandated improvements to greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) require that these NOX reductions be achieved without sacrificing fuel consumption and increasing GHG emissions.

Particle Number Emissions Evaluation for Conventional SI, Low-Pressure Loop EGR, and D-EGR Combustion Strategies

The size and distribution of a vehicle’s tailpipe particulate emissions can have a strong impact on human health, especially if the particles are small enough to enter the human respiratory system. Gasoline direct injection (GDI) has been adopted widely to meet stringent fuel economy and CO2 regulations across the globe for recent engine architectures. However, the introduction of GDI has led to challenges concerning the particulate matter (PM) and particle number (PN) emissions from such engines. This study aimed to compare the particulate emissions of three SI combustion strategies: conventional SI, conventional stoichiometric low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (LP-EGR), and Dedicated-EGR (D-EGR) at four specific test conditions. It was shown that the engine-out PM/PN for both the EGR strategies was lower than the conventional SI combustion under normal operating conditions. The test conditions were chosen to represent the WLTC test conditions.

Oil Consumption Pathway Impact on SCR-on-Filter Functional Performance and Lubricant Derived Ash Characteristics

SCR-on-filter, or SCRoF, is an emerging technology for different market segments and vehicle applications. The technology enables simultaneous particulate matter trapping and NOX reduction, and provides thermal management and aftertreatment packaging benefits. However, there is little information detailing the lubricant derived exposure effects on functional SCR performance. A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of various oil consumption pathways on a light duty DOC and SCRoF aftertreatment system. This aftertreatment system was aged utilizing an engine test bench modified to enable increased oil consumption rates via three unique oil consumption pathways. The components were characterized for functional SCR performance, ash morphology, and ash deposition characteristics. This included utilizing techniques, such as SEM / EDS, to evaluate the ash structures and quantify the ash elemental composition.

Detailed Characterization of Particle Emissions from Advanced Internal Combustion Engines

Detailed characterization of particle emissions from three different engine technologies were performed, two of which were advanced technology engines. One of the engines was a nonroad Tier 4 Final emission regulation compliant 6.8L John Deere PSS 6068 diesel engine operated with its production calibration strategy. The other two engine platforms were advanced engine technologies whose controllers were developed by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). These included a dual fuel Navistar MaxxForce 13L natural gas-diesel engine and a Cummins ISX 15L diesel engine. The dual fuel engine was operated in two distinct modes, conventional dual fuel (CDF) mode and low temperature reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) mode. The Cummins ISX engine was operated using a “hot” or low EGR combustion strategy. For each engine technology, the test campaign involved steady-state test modes ranging from low speed low load to high speed high load conditions.

Solid Particle Emissions from a Diesel Fuel Based Burner Platform

Diesel engines are the primary power source for the medium and heavy-duty truck applications in the US. There is a wide range of regulatory developments being considered in the US that would impact the field of diesel engines and aftertreatment systems, such as the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) low NOX standards and the extended durability requirement for aftertreatment systems. The proposed durability standards would require manufacturers to develop aftertreatment systems targeting up to 800,000 miles of full useful life (FUL) for Heavy heavy-duty (HHD) Application. Robust design and validation of aftertreatment systems is critical to ensure compliance with such stringent regulations. Several methodologies are being considered by the regulatory agencies for the compliance validation process, including the option of accelerated aging of the aftertreatment systems for a portion of the FUL.

Impact of Selective Catalytic Reduction Process on Nonvolatile Particle Emissions

Particulate matter (PM) and NOX are two major pollutants generated by diesel engines. Modern diesel aftertreatment systems include selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology that helps reduce tailpipe NOX emissions when coupled with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF/urea) injection. However, this process also results in the formation of urea derived byproducts that can influence non-volatile particle number (PN) measurement conducted in accordance with the European Union (EU) Particle Measurement Program (PMP) protocol. In this program, an experimental investigation of the impact of DEF injection on tailpipe PN and its implications for PMP compliant measurements was conducted using a 2015 model year 6.7 L diesel engine equipped with a diesel oxidation catalyst, diesel particulate filter and SCR system. Open access to the engine controller was available to manually override select parameters.

Detailed Characterization of Gaseous Emissions from Advanced Internal Combustion Engines

With the advancement of engine technologies and combustion strategies, aftertreatment architectures are expected to evolve as they continue to be the primary emissions mitigation hardware. Some of the engine approaches offer unique challenges and benefits that are not well understood beyond criteria pollutant emissions. As such, there continues to be a need to quantify engine emissions characteristics in pursuit of catalyst technology development and the use of advanced simulation tools. The following study discusses results from an extensive engine emissions assessment for current state-of-the-art technology and novel combustion regimes. The engines tested include a Tier 4 final compliant 6.8 L John Deere PSS 6068 diesel engine, a modified 15 L diesel engine, and a dual fuel 13 L natural gas-diesel engine. The dual fuel engine could operate in conventional positive ignition mode (CDF) or low temperature reactivity-controlled compression ignition mode (RCCI).

Comparison of Partial and Total Dilution Systems for the Measurement of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Hydrocarbon Speciation in Diesel Exhaust

Two methods of sampling exhaust emissions are typically used for characterizing emissions from diesel engines: total dilution which uses a constant volume sampling (CVS) system and partial flow dilution which relies on proportionally diluting a small part from the main exhaust stream. The CVS dilutes the entire exhaust flow to a constant volumetric flowrate which allows for proportional sampling of the exhaust species during transient engine operation. For partial dilution sampling during transient engine operation, obtaining a proportional sample is more rigorous and dilution of the extracted sample must be continuously changed throughout the cycle in order for the extracted sample flowrate to be proportional to the continuously changing exhaust flow. Typically, regulated emissions measured using both methods for an engine platform have shown good correlation. The focus for this work was on the experimental investigation of the two methods for the measurement of unregulated species.

A Controls Overview on Achieving Ultra-Low NOx

The California Air Resources Board (CARB)-funded Stage 3 Heavy-Duty Low NOX program focusses on evaluating different engine and after-treatment technologies to achieve 0.02g/bhp-hr of NOX emission over certification cycles. This paper highlights the controls architecture of the engine and after-treatment systems and discusses the effects of various strategies implemented and tested in an engine test cell over various heavy-duty drive cycles. A Cylinder De-Activation (CDA) system enabled engine was integrated with an advanced after-treatment controller and system package. Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) had implemented a model-based controller for the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system in the CARB Stage 1 Low-NOX program. The chemical kinetics for the model-based controller were further tuned and implemented in order to accurately represent the reactions for the catalysts used in this program.

Evaluation of an On-Board, Real-Time Electronic Particulate Matter Sensor Using Heavy-Duty On-Highway Diesel Engine Platform

California Air Resources Board (CARB) has instituted requirements for on-board diagnostics (OBD) that makes a spark-plug sized exhaust particulate matter (PM) sensor a critical component of the OBD system to detect diesel particulate filter (DPF) failure. Currently, non-real-time resistive-type sensors are used by engine OEMs onboard vehicles. Future OBD regulations are likely to lower PM OBD thresholds requiring higher sensitivity sensors with better data yield for OBD decision making. The focus of this work was on the experimental evaluation of a real-time PM sensor manufactured by EmiSense Technologies, LLC that may offer such benefits. A 2011 model year on-highway heavy-duty diesel engine fitted with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a catalyzed DPF followed by urea-based selective catalytic reducer (SCR) and ammonia oxidation (AMOX) catalysts was used for this program.

Development of a Burner-Based Test System to Produce Controllable Particulate Emissions for Evaluation of Gasoline Particulate Filters

Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines have been widely adopted by manufacturers in the light-duty market due to their fuel economy benefits. However, several studies have shown that GDI engines generate higher levels of particulate matter (PM) emissions relative to port fuel injected (PFI) engines and diesel engines equipped with optimally functioning diesel particulate filters (DPF). With stringent particle number (PN) regulations being implemented in both, the European Union and China, gasoline particulate filters (GPF) are expected to be widely utilized to control particulate emissions. Currently, evaluating GPF technologies on a vehicle can be challenging due to a limited number of commercially available vehicles that are calibrated for a GPF in the United States as well as the costs associated with vehicle procurement and evaluations utilizing a chassis dynamometer facility.

CARB Low NOX Stage 3 Program - Aftertreatment Evaluation and Down Selection

With the conclusion of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Stage 1 Ultra-Low NOX program, there continues to be a commitment for identifying potential pathways to demonstrate 0.02 g/hp-hr NOX emissions. The Stage 1 program focused on achieving the Ultra-Low NOX (ULN) levels utilizing a turbo-compound (TC) engine, which required the integration of novel catalyst technologies and a supplemental heat source. While the aftertreatment configuration provided a potential solution to meet the ULN target, a complicated approach was required to overcome challenges from low temperature exhaust. The Stage 3 program leverages a different engine architecture more representative of the broader heavy-duty industry to meet the Phase 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) targets and to simplify the ULN aftertreatment solution. The following work will discuss the aftertreatment technology evaluation, down selection criteria, and the emission results for the candidate ULN systems
