Gap Adjustment Strategy for Electromechanical Brake System Based on Critical Point Identification

Abrasion of the Electromechanical brake (EMB) brake pad during the braking process leads to an increase in brake gap, which adversely affects braking performance. Therefore, it is imperative to promptly detect brake pad abrasion and adjust the brake gap accordingly. However, the addition of extra gap adjustment or sensor detection devices will bring extra size and cost to the brake system. In this study, we propose an innovative EMB gap active adjustment strategy by employing modeling and analysis of the braking process. This strategy involves identifying the contact and separation points of the braking process based on the differential current signal. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that this gap adjustment strategy can effectively regulate the brake gap, mitigate the adverse effects of brake disk abrasion, and notably reduce the response time of the braking force output. Monitoring is critical to accurately control EMB clamping force.

Dynamic Modeling of Quadrotor-Slung-Load System: A Model Based on the Quasi-Coordinates Approach

With the development of hardware and control theory, the application of quadcopters is constantly expanding. Quadcopters have emerged in many fields, including transportation, exploration, and object grabbing and placement. These application scenarios require accurate, stable, and rapid control, and a suitable dynamic model is one of the prerequisites. At present, many works are related to it, most of which are modeled using the Newton-Euler method. Some works have also adopted other methods, including the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian methods. This article proposes a new method that solves the Hamiltonian equation of a quadcopter expressed in quasi-coordinate. The external forces and motion of the body are expressed in the quasi-coordinate system of the body, and solved through the Hamiltonian equation. This method simplifies operations and improves computational efficiency. Additionally, a single pendulum is attached to the quadcopter to simulate application scenarios.

Efficient Fatigue Performance Dominated Optimization Method for Heavy-Duty Vehicle Suspension Brackets under Proving Ground Load

Lightweight design is a key factor in general engineering design practice, however, it often conflicts with fatigue durability. This paper presents a way for improving the effectiveness of fatigue performance dominated optimization, demonstrated through a case study on suspension brackets for heavy-duty vehicles. This case study is based on random load data collected from fatigue durability tests in proving grounds, and fatigue failures of the heavy-duty vehicle suspension brackets were observed and recorded during the tests. Multi-objective fatigue optimization was introduced by employing multiaxial time-domain fatigue analysis under random loads combined with the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II with archives.

Analysis of Thermal Stress on Silicon Nitride Surface Caused by Drop-Wall Interaction at Engine Conditions

The phenomenon of drop-wall interaction plays a crucial role in a wide range of industrial applications. When liquid droplets come into contact with a high-temperature surface, it can lead to thermal shock due to rapid temperature fluctuations. This abrupt temperature change can generate thermal stress within the solid wall material. If the thermal stress exceeds the material's strength in that specific stress mode, it can result in material failure. Therefore, it is imperative to delve into the evolving temperature patterns on high-temperature surfaces to optimize material durability. This study focuses on investigating drop-wall interactions within the context of engine environments. To achieve this, the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method is employed to simulate the impact of fuel droplets on a silicon nitride wall. The goal is to understand the heat transfer mechanisms, thermal penetration depths, and temperature distributions within the heated wall.

Path-Tracking Control and Following Control of Tractor-Semitrailer Combination Based on Improved MPC

In recent years, the tractor-semitrailer combination has become the primary vehicle of China's long-distance freight system. In this paper, with the aim of optimizing the path tracking control and following control of the tractor-semitrailer combination, a kinematics-based path tracking control scheme is proposed. Firstly, a kinematic model of the tractor-semitrailer combination has been constructed. The control of the tractor-semitrailer combination is simplified to focus on three control points based on the kinematics model. Secondly, the path tracking control algorithm and the following control algorithm of the tractor-semitrailer combination are proposed in this paper. The improved MPC is used for path-tracking control of tractor-semitrailer combinations. The cost function of rolling optimization steps is intended, and the optimal line is determined with the lateral deviation, the variation of lateral error, and the deviation of heading angle as the input.

Cooperative Game Approach to Merging Sequence and Optimal Trajectory Planning of Connected and Automated Vehicles at Unsignalized Intersections

Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) can improve traffic efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. This paper proposes a cooperative game approach to merging sequence and optimal trajectory planning of CAVs at unsignalized intersections. The trajectory of the vehicles in the control zone is optimized by the Pontryagin minimum principle. The vehicle's travel time, fuel consumption, and passenger comfort are considered to construct the joint cost function, completing the optimal trajectory planning to minimize the joint cost function. Analyzing the different states between neighboring CAVs at the intersection to calculate the minimum safety interval. The cooperative game approach to merging sequence aims to minimize the global cost and the merging sequence of CAVs is dynamically adjusted according to the gaming result. The multi-player games are decomposed into two-player games, to realize the goal of the minimal global cost and improve the calculation efficiency.

On-Board Estimation of Road Adhesion Coefficient Based on ANFIS and UKF

The road adhesion coefficient has a great impact on the performance of vehicle tires, which in turn affects vehicle safety and stability. A low coefficient of adhesion can significantly reduce the tire's traction limit. Therefore, the measurement of the coefficient is much helpful for automated vehicle control and stability control. Considering that the road adhesion coefficient is an inherent parameter of the road and it cannot be known directly from the information of the on-vehicle sensors. The novelty of this paper is to construct a road adhesion coefficient observer which considers the noise of sensors and measures the unknown state variable by the trained neural network. A Butterworth filter and Adaptive Neural Fuzzy Interference System (ANFIS) are combined to provide the lateral and longitudinal velocity which cannot be measured by regular sensors.

Using GPU to Accelerate Backward Induction for Vehicle Speed Optimal Control

This paper proposes a method to adapt backward induction, which is used to solve the vehicle speed optimal control problem for energy efficiency, to a computer with a GPU to accelerate the computation. A common application of this type of problem is to control a vehicle on a given route with surrounding vehicles, road grades, traffic signals, stop signs, speed limits, and other conditions. Several indicators can be used to determine the performance of the controller, including the energy consumption of the trip, the driving speed smoothness, and the traveling time to a given destination. Solving this optimization problem globally by backward induction is time-consuming, due to the large searching space of the vehicle’s distance, velocity, and acceleration. The proposed method converts the single thread implementation to a parallel process that runs on a consumer-level GPU.

Interest in electric vehicles (EVs) has significantly increased from the last decade, as the whole world is concerned about the reduction of emission of greenhouse gas by reducing the use of fossil fuel in transportation. The primary issue for electric vehicles is to develop an energy storage system i.e battery that can enable high mileage, rapid charging, and high-performance driving. Hence, battery management is required to get maximum, safe, and consistent performance of electric vehicles when running in a variety of conditions. To get the most out of a battery, it's important to keep an eye on its operating conditions, especially temperature, which has been shown to have a direct impact on battery performance and life. So, a battery thermal management system (BTMS) is crucial in the control of the thermal behavior of the battery. A good system simulation tool can minimize the time and cost of designing such a complicated thermal management system.

Neural-Network-Based Suspension Kinematics and Compliance Characteristics and Its Implementation in Full Vehicle Dynamics Model

Suspension kinematics and compliance strongly influence the handling performance of the vehicle. The kinematics and compliance characteristics are determined by the suspension geometry and stiffness of suspension bodies and elastic components. However, it is usually inefficient to model all the joints, bushings, and linkage deformation in a full vehicle model. By transforming the complex modeling problem into a data-driven problem tends to be a good solution. In this research, the neural-network-based suspension kinematics and compliance model is built and implemented into a 17 DOF full vehicle model, which is a hybrid model with state variables expressed in the global coordinate system and vehicle coordinate system. The original kinematics and compliance characteristics are derived from multibody dynamics simulation of the suspension system level.

Modeling the Effects of Drop Impingement Frequency on Heated Walls at Engine Conditions

Understanding the fundamental details of drop/wall interactions is important to improving engine performance. Most of the drop-wall interactions studies are based on the impact of a single drop on the wall. To accurately mimic and model the real engine conditions, it is necessary to characterize spray/wall interactions with different impingement frequencies at a wide range of wall temperatures. In this study, a numerical method, based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), is used to simulate consecutive droplet impacts on a heated wall both below and above the Leidenfrost temperature. Impact regimes are identified for various impact conditions by analyzing the time evolution of the post-impingement process of n-heptane drops at different impingement frequencies and wall surface temperatures. For wall temperature below the Leidenfrost temperature, the recoiled film does not leave the surface.

Vibration Analysis and Optimization of Rock Drilling Arm

When the drill arm reaches the specified position, the rubber top disk of the propelling beam is pressed against the rock surface by the hydraulic cylinder force and the rock drill starts drilling. Because of the reaction force and the deformation of the drill arm, the propelling beam will be offset from its target position and vibrate, which will affect the drilling accuracy. To analyze the vibration of the propelling beam, the rigid-flexible coupled model is established. The minimum displacement offset of the propelling beam from the initial position is used as the optimization function and the parameters of the rubber top disk are used as optimization variables. The amplitude of the propelling beam at a steady state is used as the constraint. From the simulation results, the rigid-flexible coupled model can describe the vibration of the propelling beam better than the rigid model, especially during the rock drill working stage.

Automated Vehicle Path Planning and Trajectory Tracking Control Based on Unscented Kalman Filter Vehicle State Observer

For automated driving vehicles, path planning and trajectory tracking are the core of achieving obstacle avoidance. Real-time external environment perception and vehicle state monitoring play the important role in the decision-making of vehicle operation. Sensor measuring is an important way to obtain vehicle state parameters, but some parameters cannot be measured due to sensor cost or technical reasons, such as vehicle lateral velocity and side-slip angle. This disadvantage will adversely affect the monitoring of vehicle self-condition and the control of vehicle running, even it will lead to erroneous decision-making of vehicles. Therefore, this paper proposes an automated driving path planning and trajectory tracking control method based on Kalman filter vehicle state observer. Some of vehicle state data can be measured accurately by sensors.

Local Path Planning and Tracking Control Considering Tire Cornering Stiffness Uncertainty

In autonomous driving, variations in tire vertical load, tire slip angle, road conditions, tire pressure and tire friction all contribute to uncertainty in tire cornering stiffness. Even the same tire may vary slightly during the manufacturing process. Therefore, the uncertainty of tire cornering stiffness has an important influence for autonomous driving path planning and control strategies. In this paper, the Chebyshev interval method is used to represent the uncertainty of tire cornering stiffness and is combined with a model predictive control algorithm to obtain the trajectory interval bands under local path planning and tracking control. The accuracy of the tire cornering stiffness model and the path tracking efficiency are verified by comparing with the path planning and control results without considering the corner stiffness uncertainties.

Collision Avoidance Strategy of High-Speed AEB System Based on Minimum Safety Distance

The automatic emergency braking (AEB) system is an important part of automobile active safety, which can effectively reduce rear-end collision accidents and protect drivers' safety through active braking. AEB system has been included in many countries' new car assessment programme as the test content of active safety. In view of obviously deficiencies of the existing AEB control algorithm in avoiding longitudinal collision at high speed, it is proposed to an optimized model of the minimum safe distance for rear-end collision prevention on high-speed road in order to improve the accuracy of AEB system. Considering the influence of road adhesion coefficient and human comfort on the maximum braking deceleration, it is established to a more accurate and reasonable AEB system to avoid collision for expressway. The collision avoidance strategy is verified by simulation software.

Fractional Derivative Rigid Ring Tire Model with Berg Friction for Vehicle Dynamic Analysis

The tire is one of the key components that affect vehicle performance and ride quality. The rigid ring model has been widely used in the dynamic simulation of tire rolling uneven road surface, and calculate the tire stiffness and force of rim under quasi-static conditions. However, the traditional spring-damping between rim and belt is not accurate enough to describe the viscous damping force and hysteretic behavior of rubber. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a new rigid ring model, considering the viscoelasticity of tire side rubber and hysteretic behavior of rubber, to better adapt to the intermediate frequency response of tire. In this paper, the rigid ring model introduces the fractional derivative damping and friction force element to enhance the dynamic response of tire in higher frequency. Linear damping is replaced by a three-parameter fractional-order derivative damping model, and a Berg friction element was added between rim and belt.

With the depletion of petroleum resources around the world, the need to have fuel-efficient mobility solutions and sustainable alternative fuels for automobiles has become prominent. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) and Battery Electric Vehicles have recently gained attention in terms of fuel-efficient mobility solutions. Recent research work by the authors of these articles and many other research groups have demonstrated the suitability of ammonia as a sustainable alternative power for automobiles [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 18]. Ammonia has been used for a long period of time mainly as an agricultural chemical and as a sustainable and carbon-free fuel and has substantial potential as a liquid fuel for mobile applications [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. Ammonia-rich fuels can be used to run HEVs equipped with an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) as the primary power source and a battery as the secondary energy source.

Optimization of Piston-Ring System for Reducing Lube Oil Consumption by CAE Approach

A CAE-based optimization method is developed for Lube Oil Consumption (LOC) analysis of the piston-ring system. With accurate thermodynamic boundary conditions from 1D engine combustion simulation, piston motion, dynamics of piston ring, and characteristics of oil consumption are simulated using AVL Piston&Ring. The model is validated by comparing with available test data. Good match is achieved. The model is then applied to a diesel engine. The root cause of excessive LOC of the engine has been identified through CAE. The improved understanding has been applied to optimize the piston and piston ring. Engine dyno test, 1200-hour engine durability test, and 45000-kilometer vehicle test have been conducted to validate the optimized design. The experiment results are in good agreement with CAE predictions, and the oil consumption has been improved over the original design.

A Two-Layer Soot Model for Hydrocarbon Fuel Combustion

Experimental studies of soot particles showed that the intensity ratio of amorphous and graphite layers measured by Raman spectroscopy correlates to soot oxidation reactivities, which is very important for regeneration of the diesel particulate filters and gasoline particulate filters. This physical mechanism is absent in all soot models. In the present paper, a novel two-layer soot model was proposed that considers the amorphous and graphite layers in the soot particles. The soot model considers soot inception, soot surface growth, soot oxidation by O2 and OH, and soot coagulation. It is assumed that amorphous-type soot forms from fullerene. No soot coagulation is considered in the model between the amorphous- and graphitic-types of soot. Benzene is taken as the soot precursor, which is formed from acetylene. The model was implemented into a commercial CFD software CONVERGE using user defined functions. A diesel engine case was simulated.

Multi-Mode Controller Design for Active Seat Suspension with Energy-Harvesting

In this paper, a multi-mode active seat suspension with a single actuator is proposed and built. A one-DOF seat suspension system is modelled based on a quarter car model of commercial vehicle with an actuator which is comprised of a DC motor and a gear reducer. Aiming at improving ride comfort and reducing energy consumption, a multi-mode controller is established. According to the seat vertical acceleration and suspension dynamic travel signals, control strategies switch between three modes: active drive mode, energy harvesting mode and plug breaking mode.
