High-Pressure Hydrogen Jet Behavior: Flow Rate and Inner Morphology Investigation

The combustion of fossil-based fuels in ICEs, resulting in a huge amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) and leading to an immense global temperature rise, are the root causes of the more stringent emission legislations to safeguard health and that encourage further investigations on alternative carbon-neutral fuels. In this respect, the hydrogen has been considered as one of the potential clean fuels because of its zero-carbon nature. The current development of hydrogen-based ICEs focuses on the direct injection (DI) strategy as it allows better engine efficiency than the port fuel injection one. The behavior of the fuel jet is a fundamental aspect of the in-cylinder air-fuel mixing ratio, affecting the combustion process, the engine performances, and the pollutants emissions. In the present study, comprehensive investigations on the hydrogen jet behavior, generated by a Compressed Hydrogen Gas (CHG) injector under different operative conditions, were performed.

Effects of Ultra-High Injection Pressure and Flash Boiling Onset on GDI Sprays Morphology

Ultra-high injection pressures, as well as flash-boiling occurrence, are among the most important research fields recently explored for improving Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine performance. Both of them play a key role in the enhancement of the air/fuel mixing process, in the reduction of tailpipe pollutant emissions, as well as in the investigation of new combustion concepts. Injector manufacturers are even more producing devices with ultra-high injection pressures capable of working with flashing sprays. Flash-boiling of fuel sprays occurs when a super-heated fuel is discharged into an environment whose pressure is lower than the saturation pressure of the fuel and can dramatically alter spray formation due to complex two-phase flow effects and rapid droplet vaporization. In GDI engines, typically, it occurs during the injection process when high fuel temperatures make its saturation pressures higher than the in-cylinder one.

A Computational Investigation of Piston Bowl Geometry Effects on PPCI-Diffusion Combustion in a Light-Duty GCI Engine

A PPCI-diffusion combustion strategy has shown the potential to achieve high efficiency, clean gasoline compression ignition (GCI) combustion across the full engine operating range. By conducting a 3-D CFD-led combustion system design campaign, this investigation was focused on developing a next generation (NextGen), step-lipped piston design concept in a 2.6L advanced light-duty GCI engine. Key geometric features of the NextGen piston bowl were parametrized and studied with customized spray targeting. A low lip positioning design with 128° spray targeting was found to provide the best performance. Fuel injection strategy optimization was performed at a full-load operating point (OP), 2000 rpm/24 bar closed-cycle IMEP (IMEPcc).

Effects of Thermodynamic Conditions and Nozzle Geometry in Gaseous Fuels Direct Injection Process for Advanced Propulsion Systems

Direct injection of gaseous fuels usually involves the presence of under-expanded jets. Understanding the physics of such process is imperative for developing Direct Injection (DI) internal combustion engines fueled, for example, by methane or hydrogen. An experimental-numerical characterization of the under-expanded jets issued from an innovative multi-hole injector, designed for application in heavy-duty engines, is carried out. The experimental characterization of the jet evolution was recorded by means of schlieren imaging technique and, then, a numerical simulation procedure was validated, allowing a comprehensive injection process analysis. A high-order and density-based solver, capable of reproducing the most relevant features of the under-expanded jets, was developed within OpenFOAM framework. Initially the effects of the upstream-to-downstream pressure ratio, namely Net Pressure Ratios (NPR), on the spray morphology were investigated.

Under-Expanded Jets Characterization by Means of CFD Numerical Simulation Using an Open FOAM Density-Based Solver

Among the others, natural gas (NG) is regarded as a potential solution to enhance the environmental performance of internal combustion engines. Low carbon-to-hydrogen ratio, worldwide relatively homogeneous distribution and reduced price are the reason as, lately, many researchers efforts have been put in this area. In particular, this work focuses on the characterization of the injection process inside a constant volume chamber (CVC), which could provide a contribution to the development of direct injection technologies for a gaseous fuel. Direct injection of a gaseous fuel involves the presence of under-expanded jets whose knowledge is fundamental to achieve the proper mixture formation prior to the combustion ignition. For this reason, a density based solver was developed within the OpenFOAM library in order to simulate the jet issued from an injector suitable for direct injection of methane.

Numerical Evaluation of Spark Assisted Cold Idle Operation in a Heavy-Duty Gasoline Compression Ignition Engine

Gasoline compression ignition (GCI) has been shown to offer benefits in the NOx-soot tradeoff over conventional diesel combustion while still achieving high fuel efficiency. However, due to gasoline’s low reactivity, it is challenging for GCI to attain robust ignition and stable combustion under cold operating conditions. Building on previous work to evaluate glow plug-assisted GCI combustion at cold idle, this work evaluates the use of a spark plug to assist combustion. The closed-cycle 3-D CFD model was validated against GCI test results at a compression ratio of 17.3 during extended cold idle operation under laboratory-controlled conditions. A market representative, ethanol-free, gasoline (RON92, E0) was used in both the experiment and the numerical analysis. Spark-assisted simulations were performed by incorporating an ignition model with the spark energy required for stable combustion at cold start.

The Impact of Pre-Chamber Design on Part Load Efficiency and Emissions of a Miller Cycle Light Duty Gasoline Engine

The efficiency and emission potential of pre-chamber combustion in a Miller cycle light duty gasoline engine operated under part load was evaluated. Several pre-chamber designs that examine the engine performance tradeoffs with nozzle diameter, pre-chamber volume, number of nozzles, and pre-chamber fuel enrichment were investigated for both excess air and cooled external EGR dilution strategies. The introduction of pre-chamber jet ignition was observed to significantly reduce the main-chamber combustion duration while reducing cyclic variability under dilute conditions, benefiting from the long-reach ignition jets and enhanced turbulence. However, the pre-chamber design that provided the fastest combustion led to reduced brake efficiency primarily due to increased wall heat loss. Maintaining the total nozzle area while increasing the number of nozzles was identified as a means to minimize the additional heat loss and maintain fast burn rates.

Air-System and Variable Valve Actuation Recipe for High Load Gasoline Compression Ignition Operation in a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine

Gasoline compression ignition (GCI) offers improved efficiency by harnessing gasoline’s low reactivity to induce an extended ignition delay that promotes partial premixing of air and fuel before combustion occurs. However, enabling GCI across the full engine operating load map poses several challenges. At high load, due to the elevated pressures and temperatures of the charge mixture, the ignition delay time shrinks, leading to diminished GCI efficiency benefits. At low load, insufficient temperatures and pressures can lead to combustion instability. Variable valve actuation offers a practical solution to these challenges by enabling effective compression ratio (ECR) control. In this paper, the effects of variable intake valve closings were investigated for high load operations in a prototype heavy-duty GCI engine, using a research octane number 93 gasoline fuel. The study focused on the 50% (B50) and the 75% (B75) load conditions at 1375 RPM.

CFD Numerical Reconstruction of the Flash Boiling Gasoline Spray Morphology

The numerical reconstruction of the liquid jet generated by a multi-hole injector, operating in flash-boiling conditions, has been developed by means of a Eulerian- Lagrangian CFD code and validated thanks to experimental data collected with schlieren and Mie scattering imaging techniques. The model has been tested with different injection parameters in order to recreate various possible engine thermodynamic conditions. The work carried out is framed in the growing interest present around the gasoline direct-injection systems (GDI). Such technology has been recognized as an effective way to achieve better engine performance and reduced pollutant emissions. High-pressure injectors operating in flashing conditions are demonstrating many advantages in the applications for GDI engines providing a better fuel atomization, a better mixing with the air, a consequent more efficient combustion and, finally, reduced tailpipe emissions.

Numerical Investigation on GDI Spray under High Injection Pressure up to 100 MPa

In recent years, the increase of gasoline fuel injection pressure is a way to improve thermal efficiency and lower engine-out emissions in GDI homogenous combustion concept. The challenge of controlling particulate formation as well in mass and number concentrations imposed by emissions regulations can be pursued improving the mixture preparation process and avoiding mixture inhomogeneity with ultra-high injection pressure values up to 100 MPa. The increase of the fuel injection pressure in GDI homogeneous systems meets the demand for increased injector static flow, while simultaneously improves the spray atomization and mixing characteristics with consequent better combustion performance. Few studies quantify the effects of high injection pressure on transient gasoline spray evolution. The aim of this work was to simulate with OpenFOAM the spray morphology of a commercial gasoline injected in a constant volume vessel by a prototypal GDI injector.

System-level 1-D Analysis to Investigate Variable Valve Actuation Benefits in a Heavy-Duty Gasoline Compression Ignition Engine

In recent years gasoline compression ignition (GCI) has been shown to offer an attractive combination of low criteria pollutants and high efficiency. However, enabling GCI across the full engine load map poses several challenges. At high load, the promotion of partial premixing of air and fuel is challenging due to the diminished ignition-delay characteristics at high temperatures, while under low load operations, maintaining combustion robustness is problematic due to the low reactivity of gasoline. Variable valve actuation (VVA) offers a means of addressing these challenges by providing flexibility in effective compression ratio. In this paper, the effects of VVA were studied at high loads in a prototype heavy-duty GCI engine using a gasoline research octane number (RON) 93 at a geometric compression ratio (CR) of 15.7. Both late intake valve closing (LIVC) and early intake valve closing (EIVC) strategies were analyzed as a measure to reduce the effective compression ratio.

Achieving robust ignitability for compression ignition of diesel engines at cold conditions is traditionally challenging due to insufficient fuel vaporization, heavy wall impingement, and thick wall films. Gasoline compression ignition (GCI) has shown the potential to offer an enhanced NOx-particulate matter tradeoff with diesel-like fuel efficiency, but it is unknown how the volatility and reactivity of the fuel will affect ignition under very cold conditions. Therefore, it is important to investigate the impact of fuel physical and chemical properties on ignition under pressures and temperatures relevant to practical engine operating conditions during cold weather. In this paper, 0-D and 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of GCI combustion at cold conditions were performed.

Effects of Ultra-High Injection Pressures up to 100 MPa on Gasoline Spray Morphology

Very high pressures for injecting gasoline in internal combustion (i.c.) engines are recently explored for improving the air/fuel mixing process in order to control unburned hydrocarbons (UBHC) and particulate matter emissions such as for investigating new combustion concepts. The challenge remains the improvement of the spray parameters in terms of atomization, smaller droplets and their spread in the combustion chamber in order to enhance the combustion efficiency. In this framework, the raise of the injection pressure plays a key role in GDI engines for the trade-off of CO2 vs other pollutant emissions. This study aims contributing to the knowledge of the physical phenomena and mechanisms occurring when fuel is injected at ultra-high pressures for mapping and controlling the mixture formation.

Imaging and Vibro-Acoustic Diagnostic Techniques Comparison for a GDI Fuel Injector

This work presents the results of an experimental investigation on a GDI injector, in order to analyze fuel injection process and atomization phenomenon, correlating imaging and vibro-acoustic diagnostic techniques. A single-hole, axially-disposed, 0.200 mm diameter GDI injector was used to spray commercial gasoline in a test chamber at room temperature and atmospheric backpressure. The explored injection pressures were ranged from 5.0 to 20.0 MPa. Cycle-resolved acquisitions of the spray evolution were acquired by a high-speed camera. Simultaneously, the vibro-acoustic response of the injector was evaluated. More in detail, noise data acquired by a microphone sensor were analyzed for characterizing the acoustic emission of the injection, while a spherical loudspeaker was used to excite the spray injection at a proper distance detecting possible fuel spray resonance phenomena.

CFD Modeling and Validation of the ECN Spray G Experiment under a Wide Range of Operating Conditions

The increasing diffusion of gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines requires a more detailed and reliable description of the phenomena occurring during the fuel injection process. As well known the thermal and fluid-dynamic conditions present in the combustion chamber greatly influence the air-fuel mixture process deriving from GDI injectors. GDI fuel sprays typically evolve in wide range of ambient pressure and temperatures depending on the engine load. In some particular injection conditions, when in-cylinder pressure is relatively low, flash evaporation might occur significantly affecting the fuel-air mixing process. In some other particular injection conditions spray impingement on the piston wall might occur, causing high unburned hydrocarbons and soot emissions, so currently representing one of the main drawbacks of GDI engines.

Dynamic Thermal Behavior of a GDI Spray Impacting on a Heated Thin Foil by Phase-Averaged Infrared Thermography

The regulations about pollutant emissions imposed by Community’s laws encourage the investigation on the combustion optimization in modern engines and in particular in those adopting the gasoline direct injection (GDI) or direct injection spark-ignited (DISI) configuration. It is known that the piston head and cylinder surface temperatures, coupled with the fuel injection pressure, strongly influence the interaction between droplets of injected fluid and the impinged wall. In the present study, the Infrared (IR) thermography is applied to investigate the thermal footprint of an iso-octane spray generated by a multi-hole GDI injector impinging on a heated thin foil. The experimental apparatus includes an Invar foil (50 μm in thickness) heated by Joule effect, clamped within a rigid frame, and the GDI injector located 11 mm above the surface.

Effects of the Ambient Conditions on the Spray Structure and Evaporation of the ECN Spray G

The use of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) continuously increases due to the growing demand of efficiency and power output for i.c. engines. The optimization of the fuel injection process is essential to prepare an air-fuel mixture capable to promote efficient combustion, reduced fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. Good spray atomization facilitates fuel evaporation in i.c. engines thus contributing to the fuel economy and lowering the emissions. One of the key features of a multi-hole injector is to provide an optimal spray pattern in the combustion chamber and a good mixture homogenization considering the engine-specific characteristics such fuel mass-flow rate, cylinder geometry, injector position, and charge motion. This work aims to investigate the injection processes of an eight-hole direct-injection gasoline injector from the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) effort on gasoline sprays (Spray G, serial #19).

Characterization of Particulate Matter Emissions from Heavy-Duty Partially Premixed Compression Ignition with Gasoline-Range Fuels

In this study, the compression ratio of a commercial 15L heavy-duty diesel engine was lowered and a split injection strategy was developed to promote partially premixed compression ignition (PPCI) combustion. Various low reactivity gasoline-range fuels were compared with ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD) for steady-state engine performance and emissions. Specially, particulate matter (PM) emissions were examined for their mass, size and number concentrations, and further characterized by organic/elemental carbon analysis, chemical speciation and thermogravimetric analysis. As more fuel-efficient PPCI combustion was promoted, a slight reduction in fuel consumption was observed for all gasoline-range fuels, which also had higher heating values than ULSD. Since mixing-controlled combustion dominated the latter part of the combustion process, hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions were only slightly increased with the gasoline-range fuels.

CFD-Guided Combustion System Optimization of a Gasoline Range Fuel in a Heavy-Duty Compression Ignition Engine Using Automatic Piston Geometry Generation and a Supercomputer

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) guided combustion system optimization was conducted for a heavy-duty diesel engine running with a gasoline fuel that has a research octane number (RON) of 80. The goal was to optimize the gasoline compression ignition (GCI) combustion recipe (piston bowl geometry, injector spray pattern, in-cylinder swirl motion, and thermal boundary conditions) for improved fuel efficiency while maintaining engine-out NOx within a 1-1.5 g/kW-hr window. The numerical model was developed using the multi-dimensional CFD software CONVERGE. A two-stage design of experiments (DoE) approach was employed with the first stage focusing on the piston bowl shape optimization and the second addressing refinement of the combustion recipe. For optimizing the piston bowl geometry, a software tool, CAESES, was utilized to automatically perturb key bowl design parameters. This led to the generation of 256 combustion chamber designs evaluated at several engine operating conditions.

Outwardly Opening Hollow-Cone Diesel Spray Characterization under Different Ambient Conditions

The combustion quality in modern diesel engines depends strictly on the quality of the air-fuel mixing and, in turn, from the quality of spray atomization process. So air-fuel mixing is strongly influenced by the injection pressure, geometry of the nozzle duct and the hydraulic characteristics of the injector. In this context, spray concepts alternative to the conventional multi-hole nozzles could be considered as solutions to the extremely high injection pressure increase to assure a higher and faster fuel-air mixing in the piston bowl, with the final target of increasing the fuel efficiency and reducing the engine emissions. The study concerns an experimental depiction of a spray generated through a prototype high-pressure hollow-cone nozzle, under evaporative and non-evaporative conditions, injecting the fuel in a constant-volume combustion vessel controlled in pressure and temperature up to engine-like gas densities in order to measure the spatial and temporal fuel patterns.
