Unlike traditional rules-based approaches to coding intelligent systems, networks are trained and the internal structure created during the training process is too complex to be understood by humans, yet in operation networks are able to classify objects of interest at error rates better than rates achieved by humans viewing the same input data.

Assessing Heavy Duty Vehicle CO2 Emissions for Qualification as a Zero Emissions Vehicle

The global transportation industry, and road freight in particular, faces formidable challenges in reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions; both Europe and the US have already enabled legislation with CO2 / GHG reduction targets. In Europe, targets are set on a fleet level basis: a CO2 baseline has already been established using Heavy Duty Vehicle (HDV) data collected and analyzed by the European Environment Agency (EEA) in 2019/2020. This baseline data has been published as the reference for the required CO2 reductions. More recently, the EU has proposed a Zero Emissions Vehicle definition of 3g CO2/t-km. The Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) designation is expected to be key to a number of market instruments that improve the economics and practicality of hydrogen trucks. This paper assesses the permissible amount of carbon-based fuel in hydrogen fueled vehicles – the Pilot Energy Ratio (PER) – for each regulated subgroup of HDVs in the baseline data set.

Let’s start with the uncomfortable truth, climate change is happening, and the automotive industrial network is one of the main industries contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. SKF is an energy intensive business – directly using energy, mainly in the form of electricity and gas, in its operations around the world. In addition, SKF utilizes materials, predominantly steel, and services which can be energy and carbon intensive – such as transports and raw material in production and processing. The combined impact of these direct and indirect energy uses (scope 1, 2 and 3 upstream) generates an excess of over two million metric tons of CO2e per year. This figure would however be significantly higher were it not for the actions SKF has taken to reduce both energy and carbon intensity. In 2000, we were one of the first companies to actually start to report and set climate targets.

This course highlights the technologies enabling ADAS and how they integrate with existing passive occupant crash protection systems, how ADAS functions perceive the world, make decisions, and either warn drivers or actively intervene in controlling the vehicle to avoid or mitigate crashes. Examples of current and future ADAS functions, and various sensors utilized in ADAS, including their operation and limitations, and sample algorithms, will be discussed and demonstrated. The course utilizes a combination of hands-on activities, including computer simulations, discussion and lecture.

Design and Manufacturing of an Inclinometer sensing element for launch vehicle applications Tony M Shaju, Nirmal Krishna, G Nagamalleswara Rao, Pradeep K Scientist/Engineer, ISRO Inertial Systems Unit, Vattiyoorkavu, Trivandrum, India - 695013 Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) uses indigenously developed launch vehicles like PSLV, GSLV, LVM3 and SSLV for placing remote sensing and communication satellites along with spacecrafts for other important scientific applications into earth bound orbits. Navigation systems present in the launch vehicle play a pivotal role in achieving the intended orbits for these spacecrafts. During the assembly of these navigation packages on the launch vehicle, it is required to measure the initial tilt of the navigation sensors for any misalignment corrections, which is given as input to the navigation software. A high precision inclinometer is required to measure these tilts with a resolution of 1 arc-second.

Velocity Estimation of a Descending Spacecraft in Atmosphereless Environment using Deep Learning

Landing of spacecraft on Lunar or Martian surfaces is the last and critical step in inter planetary space missions. The atmosphere on earth is thick enough to slow down the craft but Moon or Mars does not provide a similar atmosphere. Moreover, other factors such as lunar dust, availability of precise onboard navigational aids etc would impact decision making. Soft landing meaning controlling the velocity of the craft from over 6000km/h to zero. If the craft’s velocity is not controlled, it might crash. Various onboard sensors and onboard computing power play a critical role in estimating and hence controlling the velocity, in the absence of GPS-like navigational aids. In this paper, an attempt is made using visual onboard sensor to estimate the velocity of the object. The precise estimation of an object's velocity is a vital component in the trajectory planning of space vehicles, particularly those designed for descent onto lunar or Martian terrains, such as orbiters or landers.
