Aircraft Cabin Safety and Interior Crashworthiness

2024-07-23
This two-day course will begin with a discussion of commercial off the shelf (COTS) test requirements.  The instructor will then guide participants through the various cabin interior emergency provisions and their requirements such as supplemental passenger oxygen, emergency equipment, seats, flammability, emergency exits, emergency lighting and escape path markings, and various other cabin interior systems.

Current and Torque Harmonics Analysis of Triple Three-Phase Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Machines with Arbitrary Phase Shift Based on Model-in-the-Loop

2024-07-02
2024-01-3025
Multiple three-phase machines have become popular in recent due to their reliability, especially in the ship and airplane propulsions. These systems benefit greatly from the robustness and efficiency provided by such machines. However, a notable challenge presented by these machines is the growth of harmonics with an increase in the number of phases, affecting control precision and inducing torque oscillations. The phase shift angles between winding sets are one of the most important causes of harmonics in the stator currents and machine torque. Traditional approaches in the study of triple-three-phase or nine-phase machines mostly focus on specific phase shift, lacking a comprehensive analysis across a range of phase shifts. This paper discusses the current and torque harmonics of triple-three-phase permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) with different phase shifts. It aims to analyze and compare the impacts of different phase shifts on harmonic levels.

Automated Park and Charge: Concept and Energy Demand Calculation

2024-07-02
2024-01-2988
In this paper we are presenting the concept of automated park and charge functions in different use scenarios. The main scenario is automated park and charge in production and the other use scenario is within automated valet parking in parking garages. The automated park and charge in production is developed within the scope of the publicly funded project E-Self. The central aim of the project is the development and integration of automated driving at the end-of-line in the production at Ford Motor Company's manufacturing plant in Cologne. The driving function thereby is mostly based upon automated valet driving with an infrastructure based perception and action planning. Especially for electric vehicles the state of charge of the battery is critical, since energy is needed for all testing and driving operations at end-of-line.

Frequency Response Analysis of Fully Trimmed Models using Compressed Reduced Impedance Matrix Methodology

2024-06-12
2024-01-2947
As vibration and noise regulations become more stringent, numerical models need to incorporate more detailed damping treatments. Commercial frameworks, such as Nastran and Actran, allow the representation of trim components as frequency-dependent reduced impedance matrices (RIM) in frequency response analysis of fully trimmed models. The RIM is versatile enough to couple the trims to modal-based or physical components. If physical, the trim components are reduced on the physical coupling degrees of freedom (DOFs) for each connected interface. If modal, the RIMs are projected on the eigenmodes of the connected component. While a model size reduction is achieved compared to the original model, most numerical models possess an extensive number of interfaces DOFs, either modal or physical, leading to large dense RIM which triggers substantial memory and disk storage.

Meta Design: Next Level of Acoustic Insulation in Automotive Industry

2024-06-12
2024-01-2934
Meta material has been known for many years and the physics are well known since decades. But the challenge has always been to put the know how into (mass) production. This was the reason why no meta material has found its way into the automotive industry so far. But now things have changed: meta material became Meta Design and is going into serial production in 2024. Meta Design is a tunable spring mass system with foam acting as the spring and heavy layer as the mass. Meta Design is characterized by cavities in the foam and concentrated masses of the heavy layer as functionalized mass pins. By tuning the size of the cavities and the weight of the mass pins the acoustic performance can be adjusted to the requirements of each individual car line. After preliminary simulations, flat samples were tested in the lab. The next step was launched: the production and testing of a handmade prototype part of a firewall insulation for a Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

Development of a Hybrid-Electric Medium-HD Demonstrator Vehicle with a Pent-Roof SI Natural Gas Engine

2024-06-12
2024-37-0026
In response to global climate change, there is a widespread push to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector. For the difficult to decarbonize heavy-duty (HD) vehicle sector, lower carbon intensity fuels can offer a low-cost, near-term solution for CO2 reduction. The use of natural gas can provide such an alternative for HD vehicles while the increasing availability of renewable natural gas affords the opportunity for much deeper reductions in net-CO2 emissions. With this in consideration, the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory launched the Natural Gas Vehicle Research and Development Project to stimulate advancements in technology and availability of natural gas vehicles. As part of this program, Southwest Research Institute developed a hybrid-electric medium-HD vehicle (class 6) to demonstrate a substantial CO2 reduction over the baseline diesel vehicle and ultra-low NOx emissions.

Choosing the Best Lithium Battery Technology in the Hybridization of Ultralight Aircraft

2024-06-12
2024-37-0017
Many research centers and companies in general aviation have been devoting efforts to the electrification of propulsive plants to reduce environmental impact and/or increase safety. Even if the final goal is the elimination of fossil fuels, the limitations of today's battery in terms of energy and power densities suggest the adoption of hybrid-electric solutions that combine the advantages of conventional and electric propulsive systems, namely reduced fuel consumption, high peak power, and increased safety deriving from redundancy. Today, lithium batteries are the best commercial option for the electrification of all means of transportation. However, lithium batteries are a family of technologies that presents a variety of specifications in terms of gravimetric and volumetric energy density, discharge and charge currents, safety, and cost.

Enhancing Sustainable Aviation through Contrail Management – A Framework for Multiple Platforms

2024-06-01
2024-26-0444
Effective contrail management while ensuring operational and economic efficiencies for flight services is essential for providing services with minimal adverse environmental impact. The paper explores various aspects of contrail management applicable to different platforms such as Unmanned vehicles, Commercial airliners and Business & regional jets. The aspects unique to each platform such as flight levels of operation, fuel types, flight endurance and radius of operation have been analyzed. Expanse of 5G network is resulting in increased flight activity at flight levels not envisaged hitherto. The paper also dwells on the ramifications of the increased proliferation of different platforms at newer flight levels from the perspective of contrail management.
