Test Vector Development for Verification and Validation of Heavy-Duty Autonomous Vehicle Operations

The current focus in the ongoing development of autonomous driving systems (ADS) for heavy duty vehicles is that of vehicle operational safety. To this end, developers and researchers alike are working towards a complete understanding of the operating environments and conditions that autonomous vehicles are subject to during their mission. This understanding is critical to the testing and validation phases of the development of autonomous vehicles and allows for the identification of both the nominal and edge case scenarios encountered by these systems. Previous work by the authors saw the development of a comprehensive scenario generation framework to identify an operating domain specification (ODS), or external and internal conditions an autonomous driving system can expect to encounter on its mission to form critical scenario groups for autonomous vehicle testing and validating using statistical patterns, clustering, and correlation.

Enhanced Safety of Heavy-Duty Vehicles on Highways through Automatic Speed Enforcement – A Simulation Study

Highway safety remains a significant concern, especially in mixed traffic scenarios involving heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) and smaller passenger cars. The vulnerability of HDVs following closely behind smaller cars is evident in incidents involving the lead vehicle, potentially leading to catastrophic rear-end collisions. This paper explores how automatic speed enforcement systems, using speed cameras, can mitigate risks for HDVs in such critical situations. While historical crash data consistently demonstrates the reduction of accidents near speed cameras, this paper goes beyond the conventional notion of crash occurrence reduction. Instead, it investigates the profound impact of driver behavior changes within desired travel speed distribution, especially around speed cameras, and their contribution to the safety of trailing vehicles, with a specific focus on heavy-duty trucks in accident-prone scenarios.

Assessing Powertrain Technology Performance and Cost Signposts for Electrified Heavy Duty Commercial Freight Vehicles

Adoption of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) or battery electric vehicles (BEV) in heavy-duty (HD) commercial freight transportation is hampered by difficult technoeconomic obstacles. To enable widespread deployment of electrified powertrains, fleet and operational logistics need high uptime and parity with diesel system productivity/total cost of ownership (TCO), while meeting safety compliance. Due to a mix of comparatively high powerplant and energy storage costs, high energy costs (more so for FCEV), greater weight (more so for BEV), slow refueling / recharging durations, and limited supporting infrastructure, FCEV and BEV powertrains have not seen significant uptake in the HD freight transport market. The use of dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) systems, consisting of inductive electrical coils on the vehicle and power source transmitting coils embedded in the roadways, may address several of these challenges.

Assessing Resilience in Lane Detection Methods: Infrastructure-Based Sensors and Traditional Approaches for Autonomous Vehicles

Traditional autonomous vehicle perception subsystems that use onboard sensors have the drawbacks of high computational load and data duplication. Infrastructure-based sensors, which can provide high quality information without the computational burden and data duplication, are an alternative to traditional autonomous vehicle perception subsystems. However, these technologies are still in the early stages of development and have not been extensively evaluated for lane detection system performance. Therefore, there is a lack of quantitative data on their performance relative to traditional perception methods, especially during hazardous scenarios, such as lane line occlusion, sensor failure, and environmental obstructions.

Real World Use Case Evaluation of Radar Retro-reflectors for Autonomous Vehicle Lane Detection Applications

Lane detection plays a critical role in autonomous vehicles for safe and reliable navigation. Lane detection is traditionally accomplished using a camera sensor and computer vision processing. The downside of this traditional technique is that it can be computationally intensive when high quality images at a fast frame rate are used and has reliability issues from occlusion such as, glare, shadows, active road construction, and more. This study addresses these issues by exploring alternative methods for lane detection in specific scenarios caused from road construction-induced lane shift and sun glare. Specifically, a U-Net, a convolutional network used for image segmentation, camera-based lane detection method is compared with a radar-based approach using a new type of sensor previously unused in the autonomous vehicle space: radar retro-reflectors.

Modelling and Analysis of a Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) Algorithm for Fuel Economy

Connectivity in ground vehicles allows vehicles to share crucial vehicle data, such as vehicle acceleration and speed, with each other. Using sensors such as radars and lidars, on the other hand, the intravehicular distance between a leader vehicle and a host vehicle can be detected. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) builds upon ground vehicle connectivity and sensor information to form convoys with automated car following. CACC can also be used to improve fuel economy and mobility performance of vehicles in the said convoy. In this paper, a CACC system is presented, where the acceleration of the lead vehicle is used in the calculation of desired vehicle speed. In addition to the smooth car following abilities, the proposed CACC also has the capability to calculate a speed profile for the ego vehicle that is fuel efficient, making it an Ecological CACC (Eco-CACC) model.

Trends in Driver Response to Forward Collision Warning and the Making of an Effective Alerting Strategy

This paper compares the results from three human factors studies conducted in a motion-based simulator in 2008, 2014 and 2023, to highlight the trends in driver's response to Forward Collision Warning (FCW). The studies were motivated by the goal to develop an effective HMI (Human-Machine Interface) strategy that enables the required driver's response to FCW while minimizing the level of annoyance of the feature. All three studies evaluated driver response to a baseline-FCW and no-FCW conditions. Additionally, the 2023 study included two modified FCW chime variants: a softer FCW chime and a fading FCW chime. Sixteen (16) participants, balanced for gender and age, were tested for each group in all iterations of the studies. The participants drove in a high-fidelity simulator with a visual distraction task (number reading). After driving 15 minutes in a nighttime rural highway environment, a surprise forward collision threat arose during the distraction task.

Vehicle Seat Occupancy Detection and Classification Using Capacitive Sensing

Improving passenger safety inside vehicle cabins requires continuously monitoring vehicle seat occupancy statuses. Monitoring a vehicle seat’s occupancy status includes detecting if the seat is occupied and classifying the seat’s occupancy type. This paper introduces an innovative non-intrusive technique that employs capacitive sensing and an occupancy classifier to monitor a vehicle seat’s occupancy status. Capacitive sensing is facilitated by a meticulously constructed capacitance-sensing mat that easily integrates with any vehicle seat. When a passenger or an inanimate object occupies a vehicle seat equipped with the mat, they will induce variations in the mat’s internal capacitances. The variations are, in turn, represented pictorially as grayscale capacitance-sensing images (CSI), which yield the feature vectors the classifier requires to classify the seat’s occupancy type.

Side Impact Characteristics in Modern Light Vehicles

Occupant protection in side impacts, in particular for near-side occupants, is a challenge due to the occupant’s close proximity to the impact. Near-side occupants have limited space to ride down the impact. Curtain and side airbags fill the gap between occupant and the side interior. This analysis was conducted to provide insight on the characteristics of side impacts and the relevancy of currently regulated test configurations. For this purpose, 2007-2015 NASS-CDS and 2017-2021 CISS side crash data were analyzed for towed light vehicles. 2008 and newer model year vehicle data was selected to ensure that most vehicles were equipped with side/curtain airbags. The results showed that side impacts accounted for approximately 26.7% of the vehicles involved and 18.9% of the vehicles with at least one seriously injured occupant. Most side impacts involved damage to the front and front-to-center of the vehicle.

Reduction of Computational Efforts to Obtain Parasitic Capacitances Using FEM in Three-Phase Permanent Magnet Motors

The rise in demand for electric and hybrid vehicles, the issue of bearing currents in electric motors has become increasingly relevant. These vehicles use inverters with high frequency switch that generates the common mode voltage and current, the main factor responsible for bearing issues. In the machine structure, there are some parasitic capacitances that exist inherently. They provide a low impedance path for the generated current, which flows through the machine bearing. Investigating this problem in practical scenarios during the design stage is costly and requires great effort to measure these currents. For this reason, a strategy of analysis aided by electromagnetic simulation software can achieve desired results in terms of complexity and performance. This work proposes a methodology using Ansys Maxwell software to simulate two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) model of a three-phase permanent magnet motor with eight poles.

Virtual Chip Test and Washer Simulation for Machining Chip Cleanliness Management Using Particle-Based CFD

Metal cutting/machining is a widely used manufacturing process for producing high-precision parts at a low cost and with high throughput. In the automotive industry, engine components such as cylinder heads or engine blocks are all manufactured using such processes. Despite its cost benefits, manufacturers often face the problem of machining chips and cutting oil residue remaining on the finished surface or falling into the internal cavities after machining operations, and these wastes can be very difficult to clean. While part cleaning/washing equipment suppliers often claim that their washers have superior performance, determining the washing efficiency is challenging without means to visualize the water flow. In this paper, a virtual engineering methodology using particle-based CFD is developed to address the issue of metal chip cleanliness resulting from engine component machining operations. This methodology comprises two simulation methods.

Exploring Class 8 Long-Haul Truck Electrification: Key Technology Evaluation and Potential Challenges

The phenomena of global warming and climate change are encouraging more and more countries, local communities, and companies to establish carbon neutrality targets, which has very significant implications for the US trucking industry. Truck electrification helps fleets to achieve zero tailpipe emissions and macro-scale decarbonization while allowing continued business growth in response to the rapid expansion of e-commerce and shipping related to increased globalization. This paper presents an analysis of Class 8 long-haul truck electrification using a commercial vehicle electrification evaluation tool and Fleet DNA drive data. The study provides new insight into the impacts of streamlined chassis, battery energy density, and superfast charging on battery capacity needs as well as implications for payload, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions for electric long-haul trucks. The study also identifies a pathway for achieving optimal long-haul truck electrification.

CFD Simulation of Visor for cleaning Autonomous Vehicle sensors: Focus on a Roof Mounted Lidar

The performance of autonomous vehicle (AV) sensors, such as lidars or cameras, is often hindered during rain. Rain droplets on the AV sensors can cause beam attenuation and backscattering, which in turn causes inaccurate sensor readings and misjudgment by AV algorithms. Most AV systems are equipped with cleaning systems to remove contaminants, such as rain, from AV sensors. One such mechanism is to blow high-speed air over the AV sensors. However, the cleaning air can be hindered by incoming headwind, especially at higher vehicle speeds. An innovative idea proposed here is to use a visor to improve the cleaning performance of AV cleaning systems at higher vehicle speeds. The effectiveness of a baseline visor design was studied using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) air flow analysis and Lagrangian rain droplet tracking. The baseline visor improved the AV sensor cleaning performance in two ways. First, the visor protects the cleaning air flow from being disturbed by headwind.

Introduction of the eGTU – An Electric Version of the Generic Truck Utility Aerodynamic Research Model

Common aerodynamic research models have been used in aerodynamic research throughout the years to assist with the development and correlation of new testing and numerical techniques, in addition to being excellent tools for gathering fundamental knowledge about the physics around the vehicle. The generic truck utility (GTU) was introduced by Woodiga et al. [1] in 2020 following successful adoption of the DrivAer (Heft et al. [2]) by the automotive aerodynamics community with the goal to capture the unique flow fields created by pickups and large SUVs. To date, several studies have been presented on the GTU (Howard et. al 2021 [3], Gleason, Eugen 2022 [4]), however, with the increasing prevalence of electric vehicles (EVs), the authors have created additional GTU configurations to emulate an EV-style underbody for the GTU.

On Road vs. Off Road Low Load Cycle Comparison

Reducing criteria pollutants while reducing greenhouse gases is an active area of research for commercial on-road vehicles as well as for off-road machines. The heavy duty on-road sector has moved to reducing NOx by 82.5% compared to 2010 regulations while increasing the engine useful life from 435,000 to 650,000 miles by 2027 in the United States (US). An additional certification cycle, the Low Load Cycle (LLC), has been added focusing on part load operation having tight NOx emissions levels. In addition to NOx, the total CO2 emissions from the vehicle will also be reduced for various model years. The off-road market is following with a 90% NOx reduction target compared to Tier 4 Final for 130-560 kW engines along with greenhouse gas targets that are still being established. The off-road market will also need to certify with a Low Load Application Cycle (LLAC), a version of which was proposed for evaluation in 2021.

Next Generation High Efficiency Boosted Engine Concept

This work represents an advanced engineering research project partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Ford Motor Company, FEV North America, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory collaborated to develop a next generation boosted spark ignited engine concept. The project goals, specified by the DOE, were 23% improved fuel economy and 15% reduced weight relative to a 2015 or newer light-duty vehicle. The fuel economy goal was achieved by designing an engine incorporating high geometric compression ratio, high dilution tolerance, low pumping work, and low friction. The increased tendency for knock with high compression ratio was addressed using early intake valve closing (EIVC), cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), an active pre-chamber ignition system, and careful management of the fresh charge temperature.

Consumer-Oriented Energy Use and Range Metrics for Battery Electric Vehicles

The present study was motivated by a need to expand information for consumers offered through the FuelEconomy.Gov website. To that end, a power-based modeling approach has been used to examine the effect of steady-speed driving on estimated range for model year 2020 – 2023 battery electric vehicles (BEVs). This approach allowed rapid study of a broader range of BEV models than could be accomplished through vehicle tests. Publicly accessible certification test results and other data were used to perform a regression between cycle-average tractive power requirements and the resulting electrical power. This regression enabled estimation of electric power and energy use over a range of steady highway speeds. These analyses in turn allowed projection of vehicle range at differing speeds. The projections agree within 6% with available 65 MPH manufacturer test data.

This paper contributes to the Committee on Commonized Aerodynamics Automotive Testing Standards (CAATS) initiative, established by the late Gary Elfstrom. It is collaboratively compiled by automotive wind tunnel users and operators within the Subsonic Aerodynamic Testing Association (SATA). Its specific focus lies in automotive wind tunnel test techniques, encompassing both those relevant to passenger car and race car development. It is part of the comprehensive CAATS series, which addresses not only test techniques but also wind tunnel calibration, uncertainty analysis, and wind tunnel correction methods. The core objective of this paper is to furnish comprehensive guidelines for wind tunnel testing and associated techniques. It begins by elucidating the initial wind tunnel setup and vehicle arrangement within it.

A Mechanical Energy Control Volume Approach Applied to CFD Simulations of Road Vehicles

This paper presents a mechanical energy control volume analysis for incompressible flow around road vehicles using results from Detached Eddy Simulation Computational Fluid Dynamics calculations. The control volume approach equates the rate of work done by surface forces of the vehicle to (i) the rate of work and kinetic energy flux at the control volume boundaries (particularly in the vehicle wake) and (ii) the rate of energy loss in the domain. At the downstream control volume boundary, the wake terms can be divided into lift-induced and profile drag terms. The rate of energy loss in the domain can be used as a volumetric analog for drag (drag counts/m3, when normalized). This allows for a quantitative break down of the contributions of different flow features/regions to the overall drag force.
