Connected Vehicle Data – Prognostics and Monetization Opportunity

In recent years, the automotive industry has seen an exponential increase in the replacement of mechanical components with electronic-controlled components or systems. engine, transmission, brake, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), lighting, driver-assist technologies, etc. are all monitored and/or controlled electronically. Connected vehicles are increasingly being used by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to collect and transmit vehicle data in real-time via the use of various sensors, actuators, and communication technologies. Vehicle telematics devices can collect and transmit data about the vehicle location, speed, fuel efficiency, State Of Charge (SOC), auxiliary battery voltage, emissions, performance, and more. This data is sent over to the cloud via cellular networks, where it can be processed and analyzed to improve their products and services by automotive companies and/or fleet management.

Performance and Network Architecture Options of Consolidated Object Data Service for Multi-RAT Vehicular Communication

With the proliferation of ADAS and autonomous systems, the quality and quantity of the data to be used by vehicles has become crucial. In-vehicle sensors are evolving, but their usability is limited to their field of view and detection distance. V2X communication systems solve these issues by creating a cooperative perception domain amongst road users and the infrastructure by communicating accurate, real-time information. In this paper, we propose a novel Consolidated Object Data Service (CODS) for multi-Radio Access Technology (RAT) V2X communication. This service collects information using BSM packets from the vehicular network and perception information from infrastructure-based sensors. The service then fuses the collected data, offering the communication participants with a consolidated, deduplicated, and accurate object database. Since fusing the objects is resource intensive, this service can save in-vehicle computation costs.

ES2re, WS50M, and Human Body Models in Far-Side Pole Impacts

Driver oblique far-side sled impacts were simulated with three surrogates. The EuroSID side impact dummy with rib extension (ES2re), the WorldSID side impact 50th percentile male dummy (WS50M), and the Global Human Body Modeling Consortium’s 50th percentile male human body (GHBM) models. The versions of the surrogates’ models were 7.0, 7.5.1, and 5.0, respectively. Surrogates were seated in the front left driver seat in a virtual generic crossover sled environment. The Finite Element (FE) based environment consisted of a driver seat, a center console, and a passenger seat. Two restraint systems were considered for each surrogate: belt only (BO) and belt plus a generic seat-mounted far-side impact airbag (BB). Surrogates were restrained using a 3-point belt that has a digressive shoulder force load limiter, and retractor, and anchor pretensioners. The far-side airbag used was a 37-liter in volume and has two chambers.

Evaluation of Drivers of Very Large Pickup Trucks: Size, Seated Height and Biomechanical Responses in Drop Tests

This study focused on occupant responses in very large pickup trucks in rollovers and was conducted in three phases. Phase 1 - Field data analysis: In a prior study [9], 1998 to 2020 FARS data were analyzed; Pickup truck drivers with fatality were 7.4 kg heavier and 4.6 cm taller than passenger car drivers. Most pickup truck drivers were males. Phase 1 extended the study by focusing on the drivers of very large pickup trucks. The size of 1999-2016 Ford F-250 and F-350 drivers involved in fatal crashes was analyzed by age and sex. More than 90% of drivers were males. The average male driver was 179.5 ± 7.5 cm tall and weighed 89.6 ± 18.4 kg. Phase 2 – Surrogate study: Twenty-nine male surrogates were selected to represent the average size of male drivers of F-250 and F-350s involved in fatal crashes. On average, the volunteers weighed 88.6 ± 5.2 kg and were 180.0 ± 3.2 cm tall with a 95.2 ± 2.2 cm seated height.

Rear-End Impacts - Part 2: Sled Pulse Effect on Front-Seat Occupant Responses

This study was conducted to assess the effects of differing rear impact pulse characteristics on restraint performance, front-seat occupant kinematics, biomechanical responses, and seat yielding. Five rear sled tests were conducted at 40.2 km/h using a modern seat. The sled buck was representative of a generic sport utility vehicle. A 50th percentile Hybrid III ATD was used. The peak accelerations, acceleration profiles and durations were varied. Three of the pulses were selected based on published information and two were modeled to assess the effects of peak acceleration occurring early and later within the pulse duration using a front and rear biased trapezoidal characteristic shape. The seatback angle at maximum rearward deformation varied from 46 to 67 degrees. It was lowest in Pulse 1 which simulates an 80 km/h car-to-car rear impact.

Effect of ATD Size, Vehicle Interior and Restraint Misuse on Second-Row Occupant Kinematics in Frontal Sled Tests

Interest in rear-seat occupant safety has increased in recent years. Information relevant to rear-seat occupant interior space and kinematics are needed to evaluate injury risks in real-world accidents. This study was conducted to first assess the effect of size and restraint conditions, including belt misuse, on second-row occupant kinematics and to then document key clearance measurements for an Anthropomorphic Test Device (ATD) seated in the second row in modern vehicles from model years 2015-2020. Twenty-two tests were performed with non-instrumented ATDs; three with a 5th percentile female Hybrid III, 10 tests with a 10-year-old Hybrid III, and 9 tests with a 6-year-old Hybrid III. Test conditions included two sled bucks (mid-size car and sport utility vehicle (SUV)), two test speeds (56 and 64 km/h), and various restraint configurations (properly restrained and improperly restrained configurations). Head and knee trajectories were assessed.

Connected Vehicle Data Time Series Dependence for Machine Learning Model Selection and Specification

Connected vehicle data unlock compelling solutions for vehicle owners and fleet managers. In selecting machine learning algorithms for use in predicting a connected vehicle signal value, time series dependency is critical to understand. With little to no time series dependency, conventional machine learning models may be used with a feature set that has few or no lag variables. If there is a lot of time series dependency including long-term dependencies, deep learning architectures like variants of recurrent neural networks (RNN) may be a better approach. Further, at any time step, RNN features may be specified to use some number of past time steps to predict the latest value. This paper seeks to identify time series dependency of connected vehicle signals, and selection of the number of time steps to look back in the features set to minimize error.

Assessment of the 50th Hybrid III Responses in Blunt Rear Impacts to the Torso

Blunt impacts to the back of the torso can occur in vehicle crashes due to interaction with unrestrained occupants, or cargo in frontal crashes, or intrusion in rear crashes, for example. Six pendulum tests were conducted on the back of an instrumented 50th percentile male Hybrid III ATD (Anthropomorphic Test Device) to determine kinematic and biomechanical responses. The impact locations were centered with the top of a 15-cm diameter impactor at the T1 or at T6 level of the thoracic spine. The impact speed varied from 16 to 24 km/h. Two 24 km/h tests were conducted at the T1 level and showed repeatability of setup and ATD responses. The 16 and 24 km/h tests at T1 and T6 were compared. Results indicated greater head rotation, neck extension moments and neck shear forces at T1 level impacts. For example, lower neck extension was 2.6 times and 3.8 times greater at T1 versus T6 impacts at 16 and 24 km/h, respectively.

Responses of the THOR in Oblique Sled Impacts: Focus on Chest Deflection

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published a Request for Comments (RFC) on proposed changes to the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) in 2015 and 2017. One potential change was the introduction of a frontal Oblique Impact (OI) crash test. The Test device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR) in the front left seat was used in the proposed OI test. The motivations behind the current study were a) determine if OI sled tests can be simplified, b) study the sensitivity of the THOR chest deflection to the shoulder belt layout in OI and c) assess the NHTSA-proposed THOR thoracic injury risk curves. In the current study, eleven oblique sled impact tests were conducted. The environment was representative of a generic mid-sized sedan. The buck was mounted on a rigid plate that allowed the pre-test rotation of the buck relative to the sled axis. A generic mid-sized OI pulse was used. The pulse was applied in the longitudinal direction of the sled.

Diagnostic Evaluation of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System on Gasoline Electric Hybrid Vehicle

Diagnosing the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve remains one of the most challenging problems in emissions control systems diagnostics. California Air Resources Board (CARB) has started imposing specific requirements on automotive companies since 2011 that required the integration of on-board diagnostics (OBD) monitor for the detection and reporting of this type of control malfunction. In this paper, some methodologies of EGR valve system monitoring are investigated and a novel approach is proposed that shows reliable detection capability compared to the other methods. The proposed method requires certain conditions during deceleration fuel shutoff events to intrusively reactivate the EGR system and determine the obstructed valve condition. The method was evaluated on a 2.5L iVCT engine in an experimental Ford Escape Full Hybrid Electric vehicle. Vehicle results are shown and discussed.

Towards Design of Sustainable Smart Mobility Services through a Cloud Platform

People and their communities are looking for transportation solutions that reduce travel time, improve well-being and accessibility, and reduce emissions and traffic congestion. Although new mobility services like ride-hailing advertise improvements in these areas, closer inspection has revealed a discrepancy between industry claims and reality. Key decision-makers, including citizens, cities and enterprise, and mobility service providers have the opportunity to leverage connected vehicle and connected device data through cloud-based APIs. We propose a GHG data analytics framework that functions on top of a cloud platform to provide unique system-level perspectives on operating transportation services, from procuring the most environmentally and people friendly vehicles to scheduling and designing the services based on data insights.

Injury Rates by Crash Severity, Belt Use and Head Restraint Type and Performance in Rear Impacts

This study assesses the exposure distribution and injury rate (MAIS 4+F) to front-outboard non-ejected occupants by crash severity, belt use and head restraint type and damage in rear impacts using 1997-2015 NASS-CDS data. Rear crashes with a delta V <24 km/h (15 mph) accounted for 71% of all exposed occupants. The rate of MAIS 4+F increased with delta V and was higher for unbelted than belted occupants with a rate of 11.7% ± 5.2% and 6.0% ± 1.5% respectively in 48+ km/h (30 mph) delta V. Approximately 12% of front-outboard occupants were in seats equipped with an integral head restraint and 86% were with an adjustable head restraint, irrespective of crash severity. The overall injury rate was 0.14% ± 0.05% and 0.22% ± 0.06%, respectively. It was higher in cases where the head restraint was listed as “damaged”. Thirteen cases involving a lap-shoulder belted occupant in a front-outboard seat in which “damage” to the adjustable head restraint was identified.

Robustness Design to Avoid Noise on Exterior Handle System

Squeak and rattle are two undesirable occurrences during component operation and during vehicle driving condition, resulting in one of the top complains from costumers. One common grievance could happen during the user exterior handle operation and during side door closing. The exterior handle system during the operation could generate a squeak between interface parts, if materials and geometric tolerances was not been carefully designed. Also, vibration generated during door closing effort, might generate squeak between parts since the reinforcement for exterior handle touches the outer sheet metal internally. For this reason several guidelines might be included to avoid potential noise condition for this system during vehicle lifetime as correct material reduce friction between parts, taking into consideration the geometric condition between parts. Plus, coupling system on handles two pieces should also be evaluated to avoid squeak during use.

Developing a Real-World, Second-by-Second Driving Cycle Database through Public Vehicle Trip Surveys

Real-world second-by-second vehicle driving cycle data is very important for vehicle research and development. A project solely dedicated to generating such information would be tremendously costly and time consuming. Alternatively, we developed such a database by utilizing two publicly available passenger vehicle travel surveys: 2004-2006 Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) Travel Survey and 2011 Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) Travel Survey. The surveys complement each other - the former is in low time resolution but covers driver operation for over one year whereas the latter is in high time resolution but represents only one-week-long driving operation. After analyzing the PSRC survey, we chose 382 vehicles, each of which continuously operated for one year, and matched their trips to all the ARC trips. The matching is carried out based on trip distance first, then on average speed, and finally on duration.

A NVH CAE approach performed on a vehicle closures pumping issue

The use of finite element modeling (FEM) tools is part of the most of the current product development projects of the automotive industry companies, replacing an important part of the physical tests with lower costs, higher speed and with increasing accuracy by each day. In addition to this, computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools can be either used after the product is released, at any moment of the product life, in many different situation as a new feature release, to validate a more cost-efficient design proposal or to help on solving some manufacturing problem or even a vehicular field issue. Different from the phase where the product is still under development, when standard virtual test procedures are performed in order to validate the vehicle project, in this case, where engineers expertise plays a very important role, before to proceed with any standard test it is fundamental to understand the physics of the phenomena that is causing the unexpected behavior.

Design guidelines to avoid hygroscopic effects on outer handles

Generally, exterior handles are one of the first parts that the user has physical interaction in the vehicle. A robust handle concept gives the user the idea of trust and good quality vehicle as first impression. Exterior handles, in which the concept is a handle body operated by applying a horizontal pull force, always pivoted in the front end and sliding against a reinforcement rail at rear end, are called strap handles. The kinetics seems to be simple, nevertheless special attention must be given regarding the interaction materials used in this system. Various plastic materials used in this system are subjected to water absorption at molecular level, changing their internal structure, resulting in swell and consequently a volume increase. This phenomenon that modifies the dimensions is known as hygroscopic expansion. In one hand, handles must present reduced wobble and free play.

Policies to Maximize Fuel Economy of Plug-In Hybrids in a Rental Fleet

Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology offers the ability to achieve zero tailpipe emissions coupled with convenient refueling. Fleet adoption of PHEVs, often motivated by organizational and regulatory sustainability targets, may not always align with optimal use cases. In a car rental application, barriers to improving fuel economy over a conventional hybrid include: diminished benefits of additional battery capacity on long-distance trips, sparse electric charging infrastructure at the fleet location, lack of renter understanding of electric charging options, and a principle-agent problem where the driver accrues fewer benefits than costs for actions that improve fuel economy, like charging and eco-driving. This study uses high-resolution driving data collected from twelve Ford Fusion Energi sedans owned by University of California, Davis (UC Davis), where the vehicles are rented out for university-related activities.

Acetabulum Injury Investigation of Proposed US-NCAP in OI Mode

In December 2015, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published a Request for Comments on proposed changes to the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). One potential change is the addition of a frontal oblique impact (OI) crash test using the Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR). The resultant acetabulum force, which is a unique and specifically defined in the THOR dummy, will be considered as a new injury metric. In this study, the results of ten OI tests conducted by NHTSA on current production mid-sized vehicles were investigated. Specifically, the test data was used to study the lower extremity kinematics for the driver and front passenger THOR dummies. It was found that the acetabulum force patterns varied between the driver and passenger and between the left leg and the right leg of the occupants. The maximum acetabulum force can occur either on the left side or right side of a driver or a front passenger in an OI event.
