2024-01-2369
Internal combustion engines, as the dominant power source in the transportation sector and the primary contributor to carbon emissions, face both significant challenges and opportunities in the context of achieving carbon neutral goal. Biofuels, such as biodiesel produced from biomass, and zero-carbon fuel ammonia, can serve as alternative fuels for achieving cleaner combustion in internal combustion engines. The dual-fuel combustion of ammonia-biodiesel not only effectively reduces carbon emissions but also exhibits promising combustion performance, offering a favorable avenue for future applications. However, challenges arise in the form of unburned ammonia (NH3) and N2O emissions. This study, based on a ammonia-biodiesel duel-fuel engine modified from a heavy-duty diesel engine, delves into the impact of adjustments in the two-stage injection strategy on the combustion and emission characteristics.

2024-01-2060
The collision accidents of electric vehicles are gradually increasing, and the response of battery cell under mechanical abuse conditions has attracted more and more attention. In the real collision, the mechanical load on battery generally has the following characteristics, including multiple loading directions, dynamic impact and blunt intrusion. Therefore, it is necessary to study the mechanical response and deformation of battery under complex loading, especially in-plane dynamic loading condition. According to the actual accident, we designed the constrained blunt compression test of the battery in different speeds and directions. For out-of-plane loading, the structural stiffness of battery increases obviously and the fracture is advanced compared with the corresponding quasi-static tests. For in-plane constrained loading, the force response can be approximately divided into two linear segments, in which the structural stiffness increases abruptly after the inflection point.

Ambient temperature is a very sensitive use condition for electric vehicles (EVs), so it is imperative to ensure the maintenance of suitable temperature. This is particularly important in regions characterized by prolonged exposure to unfavorable temperature conditions. In such cases, it becomes necessary to implement insulation measures within parking facilities and allocate energy resources to sustain a desired temperature level. Solar energy is a renewable and environmentally friendly source of energy that is widely available. However, the effectiveness of utilizing solar energy is influenced by various factors, such as the time of day and weather conditions. The use of phase change material (PCM) in a latent heat energy storage (LHES) system has gained significant attention in this field. In contrast to single-phase energy storage materials, PCM offer a more effective heat storage capacity.

Reliable and safe Redundant Steering System (RSS) equipped with Dual-Winding Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (DW-PMSM) is considered an ideal actuator for future autonomous vehicle chassis. The built-in DW-PMSM of the RSS is required to identify various winding’s faults such as disconnection, open circuit, and grounding. When achieving redundant control through winding switching, it is necessary to suppress speed fluctuations during the process of winding switching to ensure angle control precision. In this paper, a steering angle safety control for RSS considering motor winding’s faults is proposed. First, we analyze working principle of RSS. Corresponding steering system model and fault model of DW-PMSM have been established. Next, we design the fault diagnosis and fault tolerance strategy of RSS.

2024-01-2720
In order to realize the series-parallel switching control of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) with dual-motor hybrid configuration, a method of unpowered interrupt switching based on the coordinated control of three power sources was proposed by analyzing the series-parallel driving mode of the dual-motor hybrid configuration. The series to parallel switching process is divided into three stages: speed regulation stage, clutch combination and power source switching. The distribution control of speed regulating torque is carried out in the speed regulating stage. The speed adjustment torque is preferentially allocated to the power source of the input shaft (engine and P1) to carry out the lifting torque. Due to the high speed adjustment accuracy and fast response of the P1 motor, the input shaft is preferentially allocated to P1 for speed adjustment, that is, the torque intervention of P1.

In order to achieve seamless mode switching control for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) in the event of battery failure, we propose a motor voltage-controlled mode switching method that eliminates power interruptions. This approach is based on an analysis of the dual-motor hybrid configuration's mode switching. We analyze the overall vehicle operation when the high-voltage battery occurs in different hybrid modes. To ensure that the vehicle can still function like a conventional car under such circumstances, we introduce a novel "voltage control" mode. In this mode, instead of operating in its traditional torque control manner, the P1 motor adopts a voltage control strategy. The P1 controller's variable becomes "voltage," and VCU sends the motor's working mode switching request and PCM finishes the mode transition. During system operation, the P1 motor promptly responds to these target voltages to maintain bus voltage within a normal range.

Due to the objectives of achieving high fuel efficiency and drivability performance, a dual-drive hybrid system with two motors has been developed. Various drive modes are presented based on engine status, requested driver torque and power, as well as C0 status in different working conditions. The transition control of drive mode change poses a unique challenge for the dual-drive hybrid system. This study discusses the control strategies for transitioning between drive modes. The first type of transition mode is divided into four distinct phases. In the second mode transition, there are three phases: the synchronization phase involving P1 torque intervention, the C0 lock-up phase involving frozen P1 torque control and adjustment of C0 clutch torque and pressure correlation, and finally, the torque exchange phase. The third type of transition includes a dedicated torque transition phase followed by a C0 disengaged phase and concluding with a speed synchronization phase.

Velocity prediction on hilly road can be applied to the energy-saving predictive control of intelligent vehicles. However, the existing methods do not deeply analyze the difference and diversity of road slope driving characteristics, which affects prediction performance of some prediction method. To further improve the prediction performance on road slope, and different road slope driving features are fully exploited and integrated with the common prediction method. A rolling prediction-based multi-scale fusion prediction considering road slope transition driving characteristics is proposed in this study. Amounts of driving data in hilly sections were collected by the advanced technology and equipment. The Markov chain model was used to construct the velocity and acceleration joint state transition characteristics under each road slope transition pair, which expresses the obvious driving difference characteristics when the road slope changes.

2023-01-1629
Ammonia is employed as the carbon-free fuel in the future engine, which is consistent with the requirements of the current national dual-carbon policy. However, the great amount of NOx and unburned NH3/H2 in the exhaust emissions is produced from combustion of ammonia and is one kind of the most strictly controlled pollutants in the emission regulation. This paper aims to investigate the NOx and unburned NH3/H2 generative process and emission characteristics by CFD simulation during the engine combustion. The results show that the unburned ammonia and hydrogen emissions increase with an increase of equivalence ratio and hydrogen blending ratio. In contrast, the emission concentrations of NOx, NO, and NO2 decrease with the increasing of equivalence ratio, but increase with hydrogen blending ratio rising. The emission concentration of N2O is highly sensitive to the O/H group and temperature, and it is precisely opposite to that of NO and NO2.

2023-32-0096
To characterize emission performance and engine operating conditions during high-power cold starts (HPCS), a blended plug-in hybrid electric vehicle was tested over worldwide harmonized light-duty vehicle test cycle (WLTC), and a new cycle was developed to characterize HPCS. The results showed that the engine speed and load increased dramatically to high level during HPCS under the low temperature of coolant and catalysts. The higher concentration of particle number (PN) and NOx at higher speed and load, accounted for the higher emissions during HPCS. Besides, the cumulative PN emissions increased first and then decreased with the increasing coolant temperature.

In order to obtain a good understanding of mechanical behaviors of lithium-ion battery modules in electric vehicles, comprehensive experimental and numerical investigations were performed in the study. Mechanical indentation tests with different indentation heads, different loading directions and different impact speeds were performed on battery modules with prismatic cells. To mitigate thermal runaway, only fully discharged battery modules were used. The force-displacement responses and open circuit voltage were recorded and compared. It was found that the battery modules experienced different failure modes when subjected to mechanical abuse. Besides internal short circuit of cells, external short circuit from bus bar and vapor leakage of electrolyte were also found to deteriorate the mechanical and electrical integrity of the tested modules. Mechanical anisotropy and dynamic effect were found on the battery module.

In this decade, the detailed multi-layer FE model is always applied for investigating the mechanical behavior of Li-ion batteries under mechanical abuse. However, establishing a detailed model of different types of batteries requires a series of material characterization of components. To improve the efficiency of the procedure of component calibration, we introduce a procedure of automatic coating material characterization as an example to represent the strategy. The proposed method is constructing a response solver through MATLAB to predict the mechanical behavior of the coating specimen's representative volume element (RVE) under designated test conditions. The coating material is represented through Drucker-Prager-Cap (DPC) model. All parameters, including boundary conditions and material parameters, are included in this solver.

High speed on-off valves (HSVs) are widely used in advanced hydraulic braking actuators, including regenerative braking systems and active safety systems, which take crucial part in improving the energy efficiency and safety performance of vehicles. As a component involving multiple physical fields, the HSV is affected by the interaction of the fields-fluid, electromagnetic, and mechanical. Since the opening of the HSV is small and the flow speed is high, cavitation and vortex are inevitably brought out so that increase the valve’s noise and instability. However, it is costly and complex to observe the flow status by visual fluid experiments. Hence, in this article a visual multi-physics system simulation model of the HSV is explored, in which the flow field model of the HSV built by computational fluid dynamic (CFD) is co-simulated with the model of hydraulic actuator established by AMESim.

Batteries have various sizes and can be configured into different layouts in battery pack on electric vehicles. Crash safety performance is one of the key requirements in choosing battery geometric characteristics and designing layout of battery cells in battery pack. In this study, we compared impact responses of different configurations and geometric characteristics of battery cells under side pole impact. The side pole impact is a relatively dangerous collision type for electric vehicles, often causing large deformation and damage to the battery. Using a production battery pack, we first conducted side pole impact tests with sled tester, and then simulated the test configuration.

2022-01-5001
Taking an off-road vehicle equipped with 32-speed binary logic automatic transmission (AT) as the research object, the slope starting control research is carried out. The slope starting process is divided into the overcoming resistance stage, the sliding friction stage, and the synchronization stage. The control strategies for each stage are designed respectively. Focusing on the control of the sliding friction stage, the equivalent two-speed model of the starting clutch is established, which realizes the calculation of the speed difference and the slip rate between the driving and driven ends of the starting clutch. Furthermore, the slope starting control strategy based on the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control of the clutch slip rate is designed. Through the simulation tests of the vehicle starting at different slopes, the correctness of the slope starting control strategy has been verified by MATLAB/Simulink.

Fuel quality has a significant influence on the combustion engine operation. In recent years the increasing concerns about environmental protection, energy saving, energy security and the requirements of protecting fuel injection and aftertreatment systems have been major driving forces for the Chinese fuel specification evolution. The major property changes in the evolution of Chinese national gasoline and diesel standards are introduced and the reasons behind these changes are analyzed in this paper. The gasoline fuel development from State I to State VI-B involved a decrease of sulfur, manganese, olefins, aromatics and benzene content. The diesel fuel quality improvement from State I to State VI included achieving low sulfur fuels and a cetane number (CN) increase. Provincial fuel standards, stricter than corresponding national standards, were implemented in economically developed areas in the past.

Aiming at the low transmission efficiency and power density of the hydraulic automatic transmission (AT), and the increasingly complex structure of its planetary gear with the increase of transmission gears, this paper proposes a new type of binary logic transmission (BLT), which adopts the double internal meshing planetary row (DIMPR), based on a heavy-duty commercial vehicle. By introducing the concept of BLT and analyzing the transmission performance of the DIMPR, the process of scheme design of binary double internal meshing planetary gear transmission (BDIMPGT) is established. According to the structural characteristics of the DIMPG, the support structure of the planetary gear is designed based on CAD and CATIA. In the structural design of binary clutches, V-groove clutch parts are coupled to the transmission case, planetary carrier, and sun shaft, respectively, in each DIMPG.

In order to improve the vehicle economy of electric vehicles, this paper first analyzes the energy-saving mechanism of electric vehicles. Taking the energy consumption of the deceleration process as a starting point, this paper deeply analyzes the energy consumption of the deceleration process under several different control modes by the test data, so as to obtain two principles that should be followed in energy-saving control strategy. Then, an intelligent deceleration energy-saving control strategy by getting the forward vehicle information is developed. The overall architecture of the control strategy consists of three parts: information processing, target calculation and torque control. The first part is mainly to obtain the forward vehicle information from the perception systems, and the user's habits information from big data, and this information is processed for the next part.
