A Kinetic Modeling and Engine Simulation Study on Ozone-Enhanced Ammonia Oxidation

Ammonia has attracted the attention of a growing number of researchers in recent years. However, some properties of ammonia (e.g., low laminar burning velocity, high ignition energy, etc.) inhibit its direct application in engines. Several routes have been proposed to overcome these problems, such as oxygen enrichment, partial fuel cracking strategy and co-combustion with more reactive fuels. Improving the reactivity of ammonia from the oxidizer side is also practical. Ozone is a highly reactive oxidizer which can be easily and rapidly generated through electrical plasma and is an effective promoter applicable for a variety of fuels. The dissociation reaction of ozone increases the concentration of reactive radicals and promotes chain-propagating reactions. Thus, obtaining accurate rate constants of reactions related to ozone is necessary, especially at elevated to high pressure range which is closer to engine-relevant conditions.

Effects of Structure and System Parameters on Fuel Leakage Characteristics of Precision Coupling Components in Fuel Injector for Modern Diesel Engine

Increasing rail pressure is the development trend of high-pressure common rail system. When the rail pressure reaches ultrahigh range, fuel leakage of precision coupling components could have a significant impact on system performance. In order to investigate the effects of system and structure parameters on the leakage characteristics of precision coupling components, guide the design of ultrahigh-pressure common rail system, simulations were carried out. Variation of fuel leakage were studied with different structure and system parameters. A three-dimensional model of oil film with eccentric was developed to simulate eccentric between two parts of coupling component. The leakage in control valve component increases with common rail pressure; however, there is no obvious change in leakage of control piston component with rail pressure.

Nozzle Tip Wetting in GDI Injector and Its Link with Nozzle Spray Hole Length

Fuel film deposited on fuel injector tips used in gasoline direct injection engines, otherwise known as nozzle tip wetting, has been identified as an essential source of particle emissions. Attempts have been made to reduce nozzle tip wetting by the optimization design of nozzle geometry parameters. However, relevant investigations are still limited to emission measurements and corresponding indirect analysis. Due to the lack of related visualization research, the mechanism of nozzle tip wetting formation and its link with nozzle internal flow are still unclear. To clarify the influence of spray hole length on nozzle tip wetting and the underlying mechanisms, the dynamic formation process and the fuel film area evolution of nozzle tip wetting were visualized directly using laser-induced fluorescence technique and photomicrography technique.

Effects of Control Valve Structure Parameters on the Flow Characteristics of Oil Drainage Progress of Electronic Unit Pump for Diesel Engine

In the present paper, a three-dimensional (3D) internal flow field model of an electronic unit pump (EUP) fuel system oil drainage progress was established, including solenoid valve model, control valve model, high-pressure oil passage, and the plunger cavity model. From the microscopic point of view, the flow characteristics, such as pressure, velocity, and turbulence kinetic energy, are analyzed by using Fluent. This paper uses the combination of one-dimensional (1D) software AMESim and 3D software Fluent to achieve the purpose. The pressure curve of the high-pressure pipe is extracted from the control valve module of the 1D EUP fuel system model, and the velocity curve of the plunger movement is extracted from the plunger pump module. The two sets of curves are dynamically linked to the flow field calculation with a User-Defined Function (UDF), and the flow field change of the single pump fuel system control valve is calculated by Fluent.

Investigation of Flash Boiling Spray and Combustion in SIDI Engine under Low-Speed Homogeneous Lean Operation

Homogeneous lean combustion is expected to be a key technology to further improve the combustion and reduce emissions of spark-ignition direct-injection engines. The application of lean combustion is facing many challenges such as slow flame propagation and combustion fluctuations. Under severe operating conditions such as low-speed lean-burn conditions, the weak in-cylinder airflow worsens the fuel and air mixing yielding difficulties in stable flame kernel initiation and consequently deteriorating flame propagation. In this study, the effect of flash boiling spray on flame kernel generation, flame propagation, engine performance, and exhaust emissions of the spark ignition direct injection (SIDI) engine under homogenous lean-burn conditions are investigated. A single-cylinder four-stroke optical SIDI engine was used in this study. The in-cylinder flash boiling and subcooled sprays during engine operation were compared using the Mie scattering technique.

Experimental Investigation of Injection Strategies to Improve Intelligent Charge Compression Ignition (ICCI) Combustion with Methanol and Biodiesel Direct Injection

Applications of methanol and biodiesel in internal combustion engines have raised widespread concerns, but there is still huge scope for improvement in efficiency and emissions. The brand-new combustion mode, named as Intelligent Charge Compression Ignition (ICCI) combustion, was proposed with methanol-biodiesel dual fuel direct injection. In this paper, effects of injection parameters such as two-stage split-injections, injection timings, injection pressure and intake pressure on engine combustion and emissions were investigated at IMEP = 8, 10, and 12 bar. Results show that the indicated thermal efficiency up to 53.5% and the NOx emissions approaching to EURO VI standard can be obtained in ICCI combustion mode.

Simulation Study on the Process of Pressure Wave Propagation for High-Pressure Common Rail Diesel Engine

In this paper, pressure fluctuation in a high-pressure common rail system has been investigated through numerical simulation method. By establishing a three-dimensional (3D) model and one-dimensional (1D) simulation model of a high-pressure common rail system validated by the experiment, three essential parameters (needle lift, injection pulse width, and the pressure in common rail) of the common rail system were investigated, and their effects on pressure waves’ characteristics were evaluated with a 1D model. Combined with the results of the 3D simulation, the pressure wave generation, propagation, and fuel flow vector in high-pressure pipelines are studied. The results illustrated how each geometric parameter affects the pressure fluctuations. The pressure waves mainly include the expansion wave generated by the fuel injector spray and the compression wave generated during the fuel supply, and the pressure waves are reflected and superimposed in the process of propagation.

Accelerometer-Based Estimation of Combustion Features for Engine Feedback Control of Compression-Ignition Direct-Injection Engines

An experimental investigation of non-intrusive combustion sensing was performed using a tri-axial accelerometer mounted to the engine block of a small-bore high-speed 4-cylinder compression-ignition direct-injection (CIDI) engine. This study investigates potential techniques to extract combustion features from accelerometer signals to be used for cycle-to-cycle engine control. Selection of accelerometer location and vibration axis were performed by analyzing vibration signals for three different locations along the block for all three of the accelerometer axes. A magnitude squared coherence (MSC) statistical analysis was used to select the best location and axis. Based on previous work from the literature, the vibration signal filtering was optimized, and the filtered vibration signals were analyzed. It was found that the vibration signals correlate well with the second derivative of pressure during the initial stages of combustion.

Effect of Supercharging on the Intake Flow Characteristics of a Swirl-Supported Engine

Although supercharged system has been widely employed in downsized engines, the effect of supercharging on the intake flow characteristics remains inadequately understood. Therefore, it is worthwhile to investigate intake flow characteristics under high intake pressure. In this study, the supercharged intake flow is studied by experiment using steady flow test bench with supercharged system and transient flow simulation. For the steady flow condition, gas compressibility effect is found to significantly affect the flow coefficient (Cf), as Cf decreases with increasing intake pressure drop, if the compressibility effect is neglected in calculation by the typical evaluation method; while Cf has no significant change if the compressibility effect is included. Compared with the two methods, the deviation of the theoretical intake velocity and the density of the intake flow is the reason for Cf calculation error.

Minimization of Electric Heating of the Traction Induction Machine Rotor

The article solves the problem of reducing electric power losses of the traction induction machine rotor to prevent its overheating in nominal and high-load modes. Electric losses of the rotor power are optimized by the stabilization of the main magnetic flow of the electric machine at a nominal level with the amplitude-frequency control in a wide range of speeds and increased loads. The quasi-independent excitation of the induction machine allows us to increase the rigidity of mechanical characteristics, decrease the rotor slip at nominal loads and overloads and significantly decrease electrical losses in the rotor as compared to other control methods. The article considers the technology of converting the power of individual phases into a single energy flow using a three-phase electric machine equivalent circuit and obtaining an energy model in the form of equations of instantaneous active and reactive power balance.

Numerical Investigation of the Effects of Port Water Injection Timing on Performance and Emissions in a Gasoline Direct Injection Engine

Port water injection is considered as a promising strategy to further improve the combustion performance of internal combustion engines for its benefit in knock resistance by reducing the cylinder temperature. A thorough investigation of the port water injection technique is required to fully understand its effects on the engine combustion process. This study explores the potential of the port water injection technique in improving the performance of a turbo charged Gasoline Direct Injection engine. A 3D computational fluid dynamics model is applied to simulate the in-cylinder mixing and combustion for this engine both with and without water injection. Different water injection timings are investigated and it is found that the injection timing greatly effects the mass of water which enters the combustion chamber, both in liquid and vapor form.

The Effect of EGR Dilution on the Heat Release Rates in Boosted Spark-Assisted Compression Ignition (SACI) Engines

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the impact of EGR dilution on the tradeoff between flame and end-gas autoignition heat release in a Spark-Assisted Compression Ignition (SACI) combustion engine. The mixture was maintained stoichiometric and fuel-to-charge equivalence ratio (ϕ′) was controlled by varying the EGR dilution level at constant engine speed. Under all conditions investigated, end-gas autoignition timing was maintained constant by modulating the mixture temperature and spark timing. Experiments at constant intake pressure and constant spark timing showed that as ϕ′ is increased, lower mixture temperatures are required to match end-gas autoignition timing. Higher ϕ′ mixtures exhibited faster initial flame burn rates, which were attributed to the higher laminar flame speeds immediately after spark timing and their effect on the overall turbulent burning velocity.

Effect of Injection Pressure on Nozzle Internal Flow and Jet Breakup under Sub-Cooled and Flash Boiling Test Conditions

Injection pressure plays a vital role in spray break-up and atomization. High spray injection pressure is usually adopted to optimize the spray atomization in gasoline direct injection fuel system. However, higher injection pressure also leads to engine emission problem related to wall wetting. To solve this problem, researchers are trying to use flash boiling method to control the spray atomization process under lower injection test conditions. However, the effect of injection pressure on the spray atomization under flash boiling test condition has not been adequately investigated yet. In this study, quantitative study of internal flow and near nozzle spray breakup were carried out based on a two-dimensional transparent nozzle via microscopic imaging and phase Doppler interferometery. N-hexane was chosen as test fluid with different injection pressure conditions. Fuel temperature varied from 112°C to 148°C, which covered a wide range of superheated conditions.

Experimental Investigation of Combustion and Emission Characteristics of Stoichiometric Stratified Flame Ignited (SFI) Hybrid Combustion in a 4-Stroke PFI/DI Gasoline Engine

Controlled Auto-Ignition (CAI), also known as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI), can improve the fuel economy of gasoline engines and simultaneously achieve ultra-low NOx emissions. However, the difficulty in combustion phasing control and violent combustion at high loads limit the commercial application of CAI combustion. To overcome these problems, stratified mixture, which is rich around the central spark plug and lean around the cylinder wall, is formed through port fuel injection and direct injection of gasoline. In this condition, rich mixture is consumed by flame propagation after spark ignition, while the unburned lean mixture auto-ignites due to the increased in-cylinder temperature during flame propagation, i.e., stratified flame ignited (SFI) hybrid combustion.

Evaluation of Low Mileage GPF Filtration and Regeneration as Influenced by Soot Morphology, Reactivity, and GPF Loading

As European and Chinese tailpipe emission regulations for gasoline light-duty vehicles impose particulate number limits, automotive manufacturers have begun equipping some vehicles with a gasoline particulate filter (GPF). Increased understanding of how soot morphology, reactivity, and GPF loading affect GPF filtration and regeneration characteristics is necessary for advancing GPF performance. This study investigates the impacts of morphology, reactivity, and filter soot loading on GPF filtration and regeneration. Soot morphology and reactivity are varied through changes in fuel injection parameters, known to affect soot formation conditions. Changes in morphology and reactivity are confirmed through analysis using a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) respectively.

Characteristics of Impinging Spray and Corresponding Fuel Film under Different Injection and Ambient Pressure

It has been found that the spray impingement on piston for SIDI engines significantly influences engine emission and combustion efficiency. Fuel film sticking on the wall will dramatically cause deterioration of engine friction performance, incomplete combustion, and substantial cycle-to-cycle variations. When increasing the injection pressure, these effects are more pronounce. Besides, the ambient pressure also plays an important role on the spray structure and influences the footprint of impinging spray on the plate. However, the dynamic behavior of impinging spray and corresponding film was not investigated thoroughly in previous literature. In this study, simultaneous measurements of macroscopic structure (side view) and its corresponding footprint (bottom view) of impinging spray was conducted using a single-hole, prototype injector in a constant volume chamber.

Study of Flash Boiling Spray Combustion in a Spark Ignition Direct Injection Optical Engine Using Digital Image Processing Diagnostics

Flash boiling spray has been proven to be a useful method in providing finer fuel droplet and stronger evaporation in favor of creating a homogeneous fuel-air mixture. Combustion characteristics of flash boiling spray are thus valuable to be investigated systematically for aiding the development of efficient internal combustion system. An experimental study of flash boiling spray combustion in a SIDI optical engine under early injection has been conducted. The fuel, Iso-octane, was used across all tests. Three fuel spray conditions experimented in the study: normal liquid, transitional flash boiling and flare flash boiling sprays, within each case that Pa/Ps ratio was set in (>1), (0.3~1), and (<0.3) respectively. A small quartz insert on the piston enables optical access for observing combustion process; non-intrusive measurements on flame radicals has been carried out using a high-speed color camera.

An Experimental Study of the Effects of Coolant Temperature on Particle Emissions from a Dual Injection Gasoline Engine

Euro VI emission standards have set a very strict limitation on particulate matter emissions of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine. It is difficult for GDI engine to meet the Euro VI PN regulation (6×1011#/km) without a series of complicated after-treatment devices such as Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF). Previous research shows that GDI vehicles under cold start condition account for more than 50% of both particle number and mass emissions during the entire NEDC driving cycle. Dual Injection Gasoline engine is based on the GDI engine by adding a set of port fuel injection system. The good mixing characteristics of the port fuel injection system can help to reduce the particulate matter emissions of the GDI engine during the cold start condition.

The Effects of Injection Strategies on Particulate Emissions from a Dual-Injection Gasoline Engine

European standards have set stringent PN (particle number) regulation (6×1011 #/km) for gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine, posing a great challenge for the particulate emission control of GDI engines. Dual-injection, which combines direct-injection (DI) with port-fuel-injection (PFI), is an effective approach to reduce particle emissions of GDI engine while maintaining good efficiency and power output. In order to investigate the PN emission characteristics under different dual-injection strategies, a DMS500 fast particle spectrometer was employed to characterize the effects of injection strategies on particulates emissions from a dual-injection gasoline engine. In this study, the injection strategies include injection timing, injection ratio and injection pressure of direct-injection.

Application of the Newly Developed KLSA Model into Optimizing the Compression Ratio of a Turbocharged SI Engine with Cooled EGR

Owing to the stochastic nature of engine knock, determination of the knock limited spark angle (KLSA) is difficult in engine cycle simulation. Therefore, the state-of-the-art knock modeling is mostly limited to either merely predicting knock onset (i.e. auto-ignition of end gas) or combining a simple unburned mass fraction (UMF) model representative of knock intensity (KI). In this study, a newly developed KLSA model, which takes both predictions of knock onset and intensity into account, is firstly introduced. Multiple variables including the excess air ratio, EGR ratio, cylinder pressure and the end gas temperature are included in the knock onset model. Based on the auto-ignition theory of hot spots in end gas, both the energy density and heat release rate in hot spots are taken into consideration in the KI model.
