Impact of Transient Operating Conditions on Electrical Power System and Component Reliability

Transient operating conditions in electrical systems not only have significant impact on the operating behavior of individual components but indirectly affect system and component reliability and life. Specifically, transient loads can cause additional loss in the electrical conduction path consisting of windings, power electronic devices, distribution wires, etc., particularly when loads introduce high peak vs. average power ratios. The additional loss increases the operating temperatures and thermal cycling in the components, which is known to reduce their life and reliability. Further, mechanical stress caused by dynamic loading, which includes load torque cycling and high peak torque loading, increases material fatigue and thus reduces expected service life, particularly on rotating components (shaft, bearings).

Lumped Node Thermal Modeling of EMA with FEA Validation

The development of electromechanical actuators (EMAs) is the key technology to build an all-electric aircraft. One of the greatest hurdles to replacing all hydraulic actuators on an aircraft with EMAs is the acquisition, transport and rejection of waste heat generated within the EMAs. The absence of hydraulic fluids removes an attractive and effective means of acquiring and transporting the heat. To address thermal management under limited cooling options, accurate spatial and temporal information on heat generation must be obtained and carefully monitored. In military aircraft, the heat loads of EMAs are highly transient and localized. Consequently, a FEA-based thermal model should have high spatial and temporal resolution. This requires tremendous calculation resources if a whole flight mission simulation is needed. A lumped node thermal network is therefore needed which can correctly identify the hot spot locations and can perform the calculations in a much shorter time.

Dynamic Testing of Electromechanical Actuators Using Time-history Data

A commercial electromechanical actuator (EMA) is to be dynamically tested with predetermined stroke and load profiles for transient thermal and electric power behavior to validate a numerical model used for aerospace applications. The EMA will follow the stroke profile representative of a real aircraft mission duty cycle. A hydraulic press will exert a corresponding load profile onto the EMA. Specialized hydraulic load control methods must be employed to meet the accuracy requirements. Two of these methods are closed-loop linearization (CLL) and displacement induced disturbance cancellation (DIDC). These methods are implemented along with an external PID compensator, and run in real-time in a series of system identification experiments to observe controller performance.

A Modular Power System Architecture for Military and Commercial Electric Vehicles

Numerous modern military and commercial vehicles rely on portable, battery-powered sources for electric energy. Due to their highly specialized functions these vehicles are typically custom-designed, produced in limited numbers, and expensive. To mitigate the power system's contribution to these undesirable characteristics, this paper proposes a modular power system architecture consisting of “smart” power battery units (SPUs) that can be readily interconnected in numerous ways to provide distributed and coordinated system power management. The proposed SPUs contain a battery power source and a power electronics converter. They are compatible with multiple battery chemistries (or any energy storage device that can produce a terminal voltage), allowing them to be used with both existing and future energy storage technologies.

Integrated Nonlinear Dynamic Modeling and Field Oriented Control of Permanent Magnet (PM) Motor for High Performance EMA

This paper describes the integrated modeling of a permanent magnet (PM) motor used in an electromechanical actuator (EMA). A nonlinear, lumped-element motor electric model is detailed. The parameters, including nonlinear inductance, rotor flux linkage, and thermal resistances, and capacitances, are tuned using FEM models of a real, commercial motor. The field-oriented control (FOC) scheme and the lumped-element thermal model are also described.

A Direct Torque-Controlled Induction Machine Bidirectional Power Architecture for More Electric Aircraft

The performance of a more-electric aircraft (MEA) power system electrical accumulator unit (EAU) architecture consisting of a 57000 rpm induction machine (IM) coupled to a controllable shaft load and controlled using direct torque control (DTC) is examined through transient modeling and simulation. The simplicity and extremely fast dynamic torque response of DTC make it an attractive choice for this application. Additionally, the key components required for this EAU system may already exist on certain MEA, therefore allowing the benefits of EAU technology in the power system without incurring a significant weight penalty. Simulation results indicate that this architecture is capable of quickly tracking system bus power steps from full regenerative events to peak load events while maintaining the IM's speed within 5% of its nominal value.

Integrated Electrical System Model of a More Electric Aircraft Architecture

A primary challenge in performing integrated system simulations is balancing system simulation speeds against the model fidelity of the individual components composing the system model. Traditionally, such integrated system models of the electrical systems on more electric aircraft (MEA) have required drastic simplifications, linearizations, and/or averaging of individual component models. Such reductions in fidelity can take significant effort from component engineers and often cause the integrated system simulation to neglect critical dynamic behaviors, making it difficult for system integrators to identify problems early in the design process. This paper utilizes recent advancements in co-simulation technology (DHS Links) to demonstrate how integrated system models can be created wherein individual component models do not require significant simplification to achieve reasonable integrated model simulation speeds.

Electrical Accumulator Unit for the Energy Optimized Aircraft

The movement to more-electric architectures during the past decade in military and commercial airborne systems continues to increase the complexity of designing and specifying the electric power system. In particular, the electrical power system (EPS) faces challenges in meeting the highly dynamic power demands of advanced power electronics based loads. This paper explores one approach to addressing these demands by proposing an electrical equivalent of the widely utilized hydraulic accumulator which has successfully been employed in hydraulic power system on aircraft for more than 50 years.

Real-time Thermal Observer for Electric Machines

A temperature estimation algorithm (thermal observer) that provides accurate estimates of the thermal states of an electric machine in real time is presented. The thermal observer is designed to be a Kalman filter that combines thermal state predictions from a lumped-parameter thermal model of the electric machine with temperature measurements from a single external temperature sensor. An analysis based on the error covariance matrix of the Kalman filter is presented to guide the selection of the best sensor location. The thermal observer performance is demonstrated using a 3.8 kW permanent-magnet machine. Comparison of the thermal observer estimates and the actual temperatures demonstrate that this approach can provide accurate knowledge of the machine's thermal states despite modeling uncertainty and unknown initial machine thermal states.

Military and commercial aircraft and ground vehicles are increasingly dependent on electrical power. New military, commercial and space vehicles rely on electrical power in whole or in part for such flight critical systems such as flight control and fuel. Digitally controlled power distribution systems as well as the digital controllers within these systems provide an unprecedented, affordable and inherent opportunity to monitor electrically powered vehicle systems health. This digital data provides component operating signatures to the system, thereby enabling advanced diagnostic and prognostic capabilities. These capabilities can be leveraged to ensure a high mission reliability rate as well as reduce life cycle ownership costs.

Benefits Assessment of More Electric Aircraft Generation II Technologies

The Air Force Research Laboratory is currently funding efforts under the More-Electric Aircraft (MEA) Generation II Study for developing a preliminary design of an electrical power generation and distribution system (EPGDS) for flight demonstration of an Internal Starter/Generator (IS/G) for the main engine on an advanced fighter-class aircraft. The MEA Initiative is a phased, goal-oriented, effort that develops technologies to enable the use of electrical power to perform aircraft functions that historically have been powered hydraulically, mechanically, or pneumatically. The use of electrical power for these functions has the potential for enhanced aircraft performance through improved efficiency, reliability, maintainability, and supportability. Today, the MEA effort is in its second phase, with an anticipated technology availability date of 2005.
