Analysis and optimization for generated axial force of Adjustable Angular Roller tripod joint

The tripod constant velocity joint (CVJ) has been widely used in mechanical systems due to its strong load-bearing capacity, high efficiency, and reliability. It has become the most commonly used plunging-type CVJ in automotive drive-shaft. A generated axial force (GAF) with a third-order characteristic of driven shaft speed is caused by the internal friction and motion characteristics in a tripod joint. The large GAF has a negative impact on the NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) characteristics of automobiles, and this issue is particularly prominent in new energy vehicles. A multi-body dynamic model of the Adjustable Angular Roller (AAR) tripod CVJ is developed to calculate and analyze the GAF. To describe the internal motion of the AAR tripod CVJ, the contact interactions between the roller and the track or the trunnion were modeled using non-linear equivalent spring-damping models for contact collision forces and modified Coulomb friction model for friction.

Digital Twin Test Method for Autonomous Vehicles Based on PanoSim

This paper proposes an intelligent car testing and evaluation method based on digital twins, which is crucial for ensuring the proper functioning of autonomous driving systems. This method utilizes digital twin testing technology to effectively map and integrate real vehicles in real-world testing scenarios with virtual test environments. By enriching the testing and validation environment for smart cars, this approach improves testing efficiency and reduces costs. This study connects real test vehicles with simulation software testing toolchains to build a digital twin autonomous driving testing platform. This platform facilitates the validation, testing, and evaluation of functional algorithms, and case study is conducted through testing and validation of an emergency collision avoidance system. By rapidly applying digital twin testing and evaluation techniques for intelligent cars, this approach accelerates the development and deployment of autonomous vehicles.

Road Rough Estimation for Autonomous Vehicle Based on Adaptive Unscented Kalman Filter Integrated with Minimum Model Error Criterion

The accuracy of road input identifiaction for autonomous vehicles (AVs) system, especially in state-based AVs control for improving road handling and ride comfort, is a challenging task for the intelligent transport system. Due to the high fatality rate caused by inaccurate state-based control algorithm, how to precisely and effectively acquire road rough information and chose the reasonable road-based control algorithm become a hot topic in both academia and industry. Uncertainty is unavoidable for AVs system, e.g., varying center of gravity (C.G.) of sprung mass, controllable suspension damping force or variable spring stiffness. To tackle the above mentioned, this paper develops a novel observer approach, which combines unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and Minimum Model Error (MME) theory, to optimize the estimation accuracy of the road rough for AVs system. A full-car nonlinear model and road profile model are first established.

The accuracy and range of chassis control for a four in-wheel motor (IWM)-driven electric vehicles (EVs), especially in observer-based EVs control for improving road handling and ride comfort, is a challenging task for the IWM-driven vehicle system. Due to the high fatality rate caused by inaccurate state-based control algorithm, how to precisely acquire movement state and chose the reasonable observer-based control algorithm for IWM-driven EVs become a hot topic in both academia and industry. Simultaneously, uncertainty is always existing, e.g., varying road excitation, variable system parameters or nonlinear structure. Meanwhile, the coupling effects between the non-ideal IWM actuator and vehicle are ignored under the assumption of an ideal actuator.

Hierarchical Vehicle Stability Control Strategy Based on Unscented Kalman Filter Estimation

High-speed vehicle is prone to instability under bad road conditions, causing many safety accidents such as tail-flicking and overturning. Stability control could assist vehicle to drive safely and stably by adjusting the additional yaw moment. However, most of the existing stability control strategies directly invoke the information of the sideslip angle of the centroid that is difficult to obtain on the vehicle, and carry out complex controller design, which deviates from the actual application. In order to achieve a complete set of stability control architecture oriented to practical applications, this paper designs a hierarchical vehicle stability control strategy based on differential braking and state estimation technology.

Active Brake Wheel Cylinder Pressure Control Based On Integrated Electro-Hydraulic Brake System

With the development of the automobile industry, the requirements of quick response and high performance are put forward for the brake system. Since the traditional brake system cannot achieve these, the international brake parts manufacturers put forward an integrated electro-hydraulic brake system -the 1-Box. It can realize active brake through the servo motor. In addition, by controlling the pressure of the servo cylinder and working with solenoid valves, the wheel cylinder pressure can be controlled. However, it has some problems, such as hydraulic hysteresis disturbance and complex friction obstruction, which cause obstacles to the accurate control of wheel cylinder pressure. In this paper, the active braking pressure control strategy of wheel cylinders is designed based on 1-Box.

Multiple Engine Faults Detection Using Variational Mode Decomposition and GA-K-means

As a critical power source, the diesel engine is widely used in various situations. Diesel engine failure may lead to serious property losses and even accidents. Fault detection can improve the safety of diesel engines and reduce economic loss. Surface vibration signal is often used in non-disassembly fault diagnosis because of its convenient measurement and stability. This paper proposed a novel method for engine fault detection based on vibration signals using variational mode decomposition (VMD), K-means, and genetic algorithm. The mode number of VMD dramatically affects the accuracy of extracting signal components. Therefore, a method based on spectral energy distribution is proposed to determine the parameter, and the quadratic penalty term is optimized according to SNR. The results show that the optimized VMD can adaptively extract the vibration signal components of the diesel engine. In the actual fault diagnosis case, it is difficult to obtain the data with labels.

Research on High-efficiency Test Method of Vehicle AEB based on High-precision Detection of Radar Turntable Encoder

With the increasingly complex traffic environment, the vehicle AEB system needs to go through a large number of testing processes, in order to drive more safely on the road. For speeding up the development process of AEB and solve the problems of long cycle, high cost and low efficiency in AEB testing, in this paper, a millimeter wave radar turntable is built, and a high-precision detection algorithm of turntable encoder is designed, at the same time, a test method of vehicle AEB based on the detection data of radar turntable encoder is designed. The verification results show that methods described in this paper can be used to develop the vehicle AEB test algorithm efficiently.

A Comparison Study on the Performance of the Multi-Stroke Cycle SI Engine under Low Load

Pumping Mean Effective Pressure (PMEP) is the main factor limiting the improvement of thermal efficiency in a spark-ignition (SI) engine under low load. One of the ways to reduce the pumping loss under low load is to use Cylinder DeActivation (CDA). The CDA aims at reducing the firing density (FD) of the SI engine under low load operation and increasing the mass of air-fuel mixture within one cycle in one cylinder to reduce the throttling effect and further reducing the PMEP. The multi-stroke cycles can also reduce the firing density of the SI engine after some certain reasonable design, which is feasible to improve the thermal efficiency of the engine under low load in theory. The research was carried out on a calibrated four-cylinder SI engine simulation platform. The thermal efficiency improvements of the 6-stroke cycle and 8-stroke cycle to the engine performance were studied compared with the traditional 4-stroke cycle under low load conditions.

Experimental Investigation of Viscosity and Combustion Characteristics of N-Butanol/Diesel Blends

Bio-derived butanol is a potential CO2 neutral alternative fuel to be applied in internal combustion engines. However, the physical and combustion characteristics have to be fully understood before it can be used efficiently in engines. This work investigates the viscosity and the combustion characteristics of n-butanol/diesel fuel blends, with a particular focus on the combustion property at low load performance. N-butanol was mixed with diesel from 20 vol% up to 80 vol% blend ratio. Tests were performed in a combustion research unit (constant volume) at fixed chamber pressure that mimic a low load condition. The effects of various chamber temperatures and ambient oxygen concentrations (21%, 13%, and 11%) are evaluated. As expected, the viscosity of n-butanol/diesel fuel blends decreases at high temperature. The decrease is non-linear with the blend ratio.

Research on Tracking Algorithm for Forward Target-Vehicle Using Millimeter-Wave Radar

In order to solve such problems that the millimeter-wave radar is of large computation, poor robustness and low precision of the target tracking algorithm, this paper presents an algorithmic framework for millimeter-wave radar tracking of target-vehicles. The target measurement information outside the millimeter- wave radar detection range is eliminated by the data plausibility judgment method based on the millimeter-wave radar detection parameters. Target clustering is made using Manhattan distance, to eliminate clutter interference and cluster multiple target measurements into one. The data association is made by use of nearest neighbor to determine the correspondence between information received measured by the radar and the real target. The vehicle is the key detection target of the vehicle millimeter-wave radar during road driving.

Multiple Engine Faults Detection Based on Variational Mode Decomposition and Echo State Network

As a major power source, diesel engines are being widely used in a variety of fields. However, because of complex structure, some faults which cannot be detected by direct signals would occur on engines and even lead to accidents. Among all kinds of indirect signals, vibration signal is the most common choice for faults detection without disassemble because of its convenience and stability. This paper proposed a novel approach for detecting multiple engine faults based on block vibration signals using variational mode decomposition (VMD) and echo state network (ESN). Since the quadratic penalty has a great influence on adaptable VMD that may make expected component signals cannot be extracted exactly, this paper proposed a dynamic quadratic penalty value, which will change with decomposing level. This paper selected a best dynamic quadratic penalty value by analyzing a large amount of data and results showed that this approach can decompose signals more exactly.

The Experimental Investigation of the Performance and Emissions Characteristics of Direct Injection Diesel Engine by Bio-Hydro Fined Diesel Oil and Diesel Oil in Different EGR

Bio-hydro fined diesel (BHD) oil is known as a second generation oil made from bio hydro finning process. Biodiesel in the first generation is made from transesterification process and it has several disadvantages such as high density and increased the viscosity that can cause operational problems because can make some deposits in the engine. To overcome this, the second generation process of biodiesel has been modified from the first generation oil. BHD is made from the waste cooking oil by using the hydro finning process without the trans-esterification process. The results of BHD oil has nearly the same with diesel oil. BHD oil has low viscosity and high oxidation stability. Therefore, BHD oil can be used in the diesel engine without making any modifications in the engine. In this study, the comparison of performance and emissions characteristics from BHD oil, waste cooking oil, and diesel oil are investigated.

OH, soot and temperature distributions of wall-impinging diesel fuel spray under different wall temperatures

OH, soot and temperature distributions of wall-impinging diesel fuel spray were investigated in a high-temperature high-pressure constant volume combustion vessel. The ambient temperature (Ta) was set as 773 K, and the wall temperature (Tw) was set as 523 K, 673 K, 773 K, respectively. Three different injection pressures (Pi) of 60 MPa, 100 MPa, 160 MPa, and the ambient pressures (Pa) of 4 MPa were applied. The OH spatial distributions of wall-impinging spray were measured by the method of OH chemiluminescence imaging. Two-color pyrometry was applied to evaluate the spatial distributions of KL factor and flame temperature of wall-impinging spray. The results reveal that, OH chemiluminescence is observed in the region near the impingement point firstly. The regions of high OH chemiluminescence intensity and high KL factor appear in the location near the wall surface along the whole combustion process.

Research on Dynamic Load of Belgian Event Based on Virtual Proving Ground

The fatigue load spectrum of the physical proving ground is the necessary input for fatigue life analysis of vehicle parts and components. It is usually obtained by Road Load Data Acquisition (RLDA) and loads decomposition using multi-body dynamics tools. Virtual Proving Ground (VPG) methodology is gradually replacing this technical strategy. The belgian road is the typical event in durability test, in this paper, the flexible body and FTire model are applied to the vehicle multi-body dynamics model in order to improve the simulation accuracy. The result shows that all the wheel center force, shock absorber displacement and axial force acquired by VPG simulation have excellent correlation with real vehicle measured data. It is also proved that the virtual proving ground technology is a reliable and effective method to obtain the fatigue load spectrum in the early stage of development.

Robust Methodology to Predict Occupant Response during Low Speed Rear Impact Using DOE with an Automated CAE Process

Whiplash-associated disorder is one of the most common injuries from rear-impact crash scenarios. Knowing the injury mechanism is one of the keys in designing the seat to reduce the risk of injury. Due to the effects of variation, whiplash prevention is one of the most challenging safety-related topics in automotive industry. The test variation can originate from the dummy itself, seat components, materials, assembly tolerance, and as well as typical test setup variations. It is important to understand these variations and take them into account using Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) analysis in order to identify how to reduce the risk of injury. In this paper, a robust methodology to predict occupant response from CAE simulations is developed by combining a Design of Experiment (DOE) with an Automated Process (AP). A Whiplash Variation Map (WVM) is developed to serve as a seat design aid.

Natural Flame Luminosity and Emission Spectra of Diesel Spray Flame under Oxygen-Enriched Condition in an Optical Constant Volume Vessel

The application of oxygen-enriched or oxy-fuel combustion coupled with carbon capture and storage technology has zero carbon dioxide emission potential in the boiler and gas turbine of the power plant. However, the oxygen-enriched combustion with high oxygen level has few studies in internal combustion engines. The fundamental issues and challenges of high oxygen level are the great differences in the physical properties and chemical effects compared with the combustion in air condition. As a consequence, the diesel spray combustion characteristics at high oxygen level were investigated in an optical constant volume vessel. The oxygen volume fraction of tested gas was from 21% to 70%, buffered with argon. The high-speed color camera was used to record the natural flame luminosity.

Effects of Low Temperature Reforming (LTR) Products of Low Octane Number Fuels on HCCI Combustion

In order to achieve high-efficiency and clean combustion in HCCI engines, combustion must be controlled reasonably. A great variety of species with various reactivities can be produced through low temperature oxidation of fuels, which offers possible solutions to the problem of controlling in-cylinder mixture reactivity to accommodate changes in the operating conditions. In this work, in-cylinder combustion characteristics with low temperature reforming (LTR) were investigated in an optical engine fueled with low octane number fuel. LTR was achieved through low temperature oxidation of fuels in a reformer (flow reactor), and then LTR products (oxidation products) were fed into the engine to alter the charge reactivity. Primary Reference Fuels (blended fuel of n-heptane and iso-octane, PRFs) are often used to investigate the effects of octane number on combustion characteristics in engines.

Trajectory-Tracking Control for Autonomous Driving Considering Its Stability with ESP

With rapid increase of vehicles on the road, safety concerns have become increasingly prominent. Since the leading cause of many traffic accidents is known to be by human drivers, developing autonomous vehicles is considered to be an effective approach to solve the problems above. Although trajectory tracking plays one of the most important roles on autonomous driving, handling the coupling between trajectory-tracking control and ESP under certain driving scenarios remains to be challenging. This paper focuses on trajectory-tracking control considering the role of ESP. A vehicle model is developed with two degrees of freedom, including vehicle lateral, and yaw motions. Based on the proposed model, the vehicle trajectory is separated into both longitudinal and lateral motion. The coupling effect of the vehicle and ESP is analyzed in the paper. The lateral trajectory-tracking algorithm is developed based on the preview follower theory.
