To meet LEV and EU Stage III emission requirements, it is necessary for new catalytic converters to be designed which exceed light-off temperature as quickly as possible. The technical solutions are secondary air injection, active heating systems such as the electrically heated catalytic converter, and the close coupled catalytic converter. Engine control functions are extensively used to heat the converter and will to play a significant role in the future. The concept of relocating the converter to a position close to the engine in an existing vehicle involves new conflicts. Examples include the space requirements, the thermal resistance of the catalytic coating and high temperature loads in the engine compartment.

Diesel engine emission regulations throughout the world have progressed over the last 20 years. In the U.S. the most stringent medium/heavy duty standard will be implemented for on highway vehicles starting in 2010. Although changes to engine design will improve engine out emissions, in order to meet both PM and NOx regulations, combination systems including PM and NOx aftertreatment, are planned to be utilized. In order to achieve the required regulations, a new substrate technology has been developed using advanced “turbulent” flow characteristics, and it has been combined with a novel approach to reduce system complexity: the “SCRi™” or “SCR integrated” system. Such a system uses a continuously operating PM-Metalit with advanced “turbulent” SCR-catalysts in a unique configuration. The reduction of both PM and NOx also has to be seen in context with its effect on CO2 emissions.

Equations and Methods for Testing Hydrogen Fuel Consumption using Exhaust Emissions

Although hydrogen ICE engines have existed in one sort or another for many years, the testing of fuel consumption by way of exhaust emissions is not yet a proven method. The current consumption method for gasoline- and diesel-fueled vehicles is called the Carbon-Balance method, and it works by testing the vehicle exhaust for all carbon-containing components. Through conservation of mass, the carbon that comes out as exhaust must have gone in as fuel. Just like the Carbon-Balance method for gas and diesel engines, the new Hydrogen-Balance equation works on the principle that what goes into the engine must come out as exhaust components. This allows for fuel consumption measurements without direct contact with the fuel. This means increased accuracy and simplicity. This new method requires some modifications to the testing procedures and CVS (Constant Volume Sampling) system.

Emission legislations for the light / medium and heavy duty vehicles are becoming more and more stringent worldwide. Tightening of NOx and Particulate Matter (PM) limits further from Euro III to Euro IV levels has provoked the need of either controlling NOx from the engine measures and use PM control after-treatment devices such as Partial Flow Filters, or, controlling PM from the engine measures and use NOx control devices such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems. Manufacturers have adopted different strategies, depending upon the suitability, cost factors, infrastructure development and ease of maintenance of these systems. PM Metalit®, is a partial flow filter, which captures particulates coming out of the exhaust and re-generates on a continuous basis with the help of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) in the exhaust.

A New Method for the Investigation of Unburned Oil Emissions in the Raw Exhaust of SI Engines

The study of oil emission is of essential interest for the engine development of modern cars, as well as for the understanding of hydrocarbon emissions especially during cold start conditions. A laser mass spectrometer has been used to measure single aromatic hydrocarbons in unconditioned exhaust gas of a H2-fueled engine at stationary and transient motor operation. These compounds represent unburned oil constituents. The measurements were accompanied by FID and GC-FID measurements of hydrocarbons which represent the burned oil constituents. The total oil consumption has been determined by measuring the oil sampled by freezing and weighing. It has been concluded that only 10 % of the oil consumption via exhaust gas has burned in the cylinders. A correlation of the emission of single oil-based components at ppb level detected with the laser mass spectrometer to the total motor oil emission has been found.

The designated applications for powertrain and chassis control place requirements in terms of availability, reliability and data bandwidth that cannot be met by any product currently available on the market under the testing conditions encountered in an automobile. A short look back on events so far is followed by a description of the protocol and its first implementation as an integrated circuit, as well as its incorporation into a complete tool environment.

New Catalyst Preparation Procedure for OBDII-Monitoring Requirements

In order to match catalyst OBDII conditions the common procedure is oven aging with air, which is not suitable for complete converter systems due to mantle corrosion. The goal was, therefore, to find an alternative procedure to ensure a defined catalyst aging that would match 1,75 times the emission standard and is also good for SULEV. The new procedure currently being developed allows the aging of metal and ceramic catalysts as well as complete catalyst systems. The paper will present the aging process, emission data of fresh and aged catalysts and the feedback to the test car OBDII system.

The automakers that comprise MOST® describe the reasons for this decision. First, they present the automobile industry's needs relative to multimedia networks in vehicles. Then, they present the different aspects of the MOST® technology. Multimedia networks are used in the electronics market, but they do not meet the technical and industrial constraints of the automobile electronics, which is why six automakers are working on most technology under the aegis of ""Most Cooperation.'' The transmission rate is a decisive aspect in the selection of a multimedia network. The rate of sound and video applications require fiber optics. The multimedia network rate must be adequate for a vehicle equipped with the maximum number of options, but the maximum rate is limited by the number of passengers.

The optimization of the vaporization and mixture formation process is of great importance for the development of modern gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines, because it influences the subsequent processes of the ignition, combustion and pollutant formation significantly. In consequence, the subject of this work was the development of a measurement technique based on the laser induced exciplex fluorescence (LIF), which allows the two dimensional visualization and quantification of the in-cylinder air/fuel ratio. A tracer concept consisting of benzene and triethylamine dissolved in a non-fluorescent base fuel has been used. The calibration of the equivalence ratio proportional LIF-signal was performed directly inside the engine, at a well known mixture composition, immediately before the direct injection measurements were started.

Soot filtration represents a major problem for the complete exploiting of Diesel engines characteristics in terms of global efficiency and CO2 emissions. Even though the engines development in the last years let the engine performances improve, exhaust gas after treatment is still required to respect the foreseen limits for soot and NOx emissions. A flow-through particle trap has been presented with a great potential in soot removal without major penalties in terms of exhaust back pressure. The device performance is strictly connected to channel geometry. This paper deals with that relation by means of an experimental-numerical approach.

Local Gaussian Process Regression in Order to Model Air Charge of Turbocharged Gasoline SI Engines

A local Gaussian process regression approach is presented, which allows to model nonlinearities of internal combustion engines more accurate than global Gaussian process regression. By building smaller models, the prediction of local system behavior improves significantly. In order to predict a value, the algorithm chooses the nearest training points. The number of chosen training points depends on the intensity of estimated nonlinearity. After determining the training points, a model is built, the prediction performed and the model discarded. The approach is demonstrated with a benchmark system and air charge test bed measurements. The measurements are taken from a turbocharged SI gasoline engine with both variable inlet valve lift and variable inlet and exhaust valve opening angle. The results show how local Gaussian process regression outmatches global Gaussian process regression concerning model quality and nonlinearities in particular.

SCR and SCRi® as After-treatment Systems for Low CO2 and Low NOx Vehicles

On one hand, latest worldwide emissions legislation developments aim to reduce NOx and Particulate Matter (PM) emissions of all diesel engines, while on the other hand lower fuel consumption diesel engines are still required for lower fleet average CO₂ emissions. As a consequence of the chosen CO₂ optimized combustion mode, the raw NOx emission increases and as such Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology will be the future choice for high efficiency NOx aftertreatment. This paper deals with SCR technology and its derivative SCRi® technology, when diesel particle reduction is required, especially for heavy-duty applications. Alongside the developed metal catalyst technologies, a complete SCR reducing agent dosing system is presented. Emission results gained with the SCR or SCRi® technologies on European commercial engines illustrate the potential of these technologies for conversion of NOx and PM emissions.

Investigation of Underbody Metal SCR Systems with Active Thermal Management: Experience Update

The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is the main after-treatment solution for high efficient diesel engines under development to cope with future lower fuel consumption and NOx emissions requirements (EU6+ legislation). Exhaust gas temperatures are decreasing too, leading to new after-treatment system developments in a close coupled position. Nevertheless before all vehicle architectures allow it, SCR systems are and will still be installed in underbody position. The current paper deals with an underbody metal SCR after-treatment systems, which is capable of active thermal management, and an ultra-compact SCR dosing system. These technologies are described and emission results obtained on several application examples (from passenger cars to light duty commercial vehicles) are presented and discussed in conjunction with an effective active thermal management of the SCR function.

Achieving BS-IV Emission Targets for Diesel Small Commercial Vehicle (SCV) with Close Coupled Advanced EnviCat® DOC and Coated PM Metalit® After - Treatment System

Small Commercial Vehicle (SCV) is an emerging Commercial Vehicle (CV) segment both in India and throughout the world. Vehicles in this segment have diesel engine of capacity less than 1 l and GVW of less than 3.5 t. Normally for the CV, engines are tested on engine dynamometer for emission test, but SCV are tested on chassis dynamometer as they are classified as N1.1 class vehicles. Hence SCV have to follow same emission regulations as diesel passenger cars. The main challenge is to meet BS-IV NOx and PM emission target together with high torque optimization along with required durability targets. This paper addresses this challenge and reports the work carried out on an Indian SCV with 0.7 l naturally aspirated indirect injection diesel engine.

On the Different Contributions of Flexible Elements to the Structural Noise of Refrigeration Compressors

Air conditioning acoustics have become of paramount importance in electric vehicles, where noise from electromechanical components is no longer masked by the presence of the internal combustion engine. In a car HVAC systems, the coolant compressor is one of the most important sources in terms of vibration and noise generation. The paper, the generated structural noise is studied in detail on a prototype installation, and the noise transmission and propagation mechanisms are analyzed and discussed. Through ”in situ” measurements and virtual point transformation, the rotor unbalance forces and torque acting within the component are identified. The dynamic properties of the rubber mounts, installed between the compressor and its support, are identified thanks to matrix inversion methods. To assess the quality of the proposed procedure, the synthesized sound pressure level is compared with experimental SPL measurements in different operational conditions.

Combination of Different Regeneration Methods for Diesel Particulate Traps

A particulate trap with additive supported regeneration is a very effective way of reducing soot emissions of diesel exhaust gas. Particulate traps presently available on the market clearly show that the regeneration process is the most important detail in particulate trap technology. In this specific case of particulate traps, active rare earth oxides are added into the fuel to produce an initial and almost continuous regeneration without external burners, resistance heating, etc., as is well known from other systems. It should not be forgotten that an externally initiated regeneration will always produce a temperature peak inside the soot collecting filter media which may destroy them. Such damage can be avoided by catalytically supported regeneration of particulate traps. In the presence of an active catalyst, an inorganic cerium compound, regeneration temperature will decrease from 550 to 600 deg. C normally to about 350 to 400 deg. C.
