Optimization of Control Strategy for Engine Start-stop in a Plug-in Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) provide significantly improvement in fuel economy over conventional vehicles as well as reductions in greenhouse gas and petroleum. Numerous recent reports regarding control strategy, power train configuration, driving pattern, all electric range (AER) and their effects on fuel consumption and electric energy consumption of PHEVs are reported. Meanwhile, the control strategy for engine start-stop and mileage between recharging events from the electricity grid also has an important influence on the petroleum displacement potential of PHEVs, but few reports are published. In this paper, a detailed simulation model is set up for a plug-in series hybrid electric vehicle (PSHEV) employing the AVL CRUISE. The model was employed to predict the AER of the baseline PSHEV using rule-based logical threshold switching control strategy.

Distributed Electrical Discharge to Improve the Ignition of Premixed Quiescent and Turbulent Mixtures

The present work investigates the efficacy of distributed electrical discharge to increase the ignition volume by means of multipole spark discharge and radio frequency (RF) corona discharge. A range of ignition strategies are implemented to evaluate the efficacy of distributed ignition. The multipole spark igniter design has multiple high-voltage electrodes in close proximity to each other. This distributed spark ignition concept has the ability to generate multiple flame kernels either simultaneously or in a staggered mode. A novel elastic breakdown ignition strategy in responsive distribution (eBIRD) high frequency discharge is also implemented via the multipole igniter. The RF corona discharge is generated through an in-house developed ignition system. A form of distributed ignition is initiated along the streamer filaments.

MPC-Based Downhill Coasting-Speed Control Method for Motor-Driven Vehicles

To improve the maneuverability and energy consumption of an electrical vehicle, a two-level speed control method based on model predictive control (MPC) is proposed for accurate control of the vehicle during downhill coasting. The targeted acceleration is planned using the anti-interference speed filter and MPC algorithm in the upper-level controller and executed using the integrated algorithm with the inverse vehicle dynamics and proportional-integral-derivative control model (PID) in the lower-level controller, improving the algorithm’s anti-interference performance and road adaptability. Simulations and vehicle road tests showed that the proposed method could realize accurate real-time speed control of the vehicle during downhill coasting. It can also achieve a smaller derivation between the actual and targeted speeds, as well as more stable speeds when the road resistance changes abruptly, compared with the conventional PID method.

Research on Life Cycle of Typical Passenger Vehicles Based on Energy Structure

Based on the principle of carbon footprint, this paper selects typical passenger cars, such as internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and battery electric vehicles (BEV) in the market of China as the research objects, and compares the energy consumption and carbon emissions of the three vehicle models in the whole life cycle for three major stages of manufacturing, driving and recycling in three representative cities. The results show that the manufacturing energy consumption of BEV is 5 times of HEV and 10 times of ICEV. For the BEV, only after driving a certain mileage it can be a less the unit energy consumption and emissions than ICEV. The whole life cycle carbon emissions of passenger cars with different power types is not only related to mileage, but also related to the energy structure of local electric power supply.

Effective Ignition of Lean Methane/Hydrogen Mixture in a Rapid Compression Machine

The use of renewable natural gas and green hydrogen can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of engines. For future spark ignition engines, lean burn strategy and high compression ratio need to be adopted to further improve thermal efficiency, reducing energy consumption. The efficacy of the ignition system is essential to initiate self-sustainable flame under those extreme conditions. In this work, a rapid compression machine is employed to compress air-fuel mixture to engine-like boundary conditions before the spark event to experimentally investigate the ignition and combustion characteristics of the methane-air mixtures under extreme lean conditions. Hydrogen is also added to support the ignition process and enhance flame propagation speed. Lean methane-air mixtures with excess air ratio up to 2.8 are used, with 10 vol% hydrogen addition into the methane fuel. The ignition criteria under various ignition strategies are explored.
