Catalyzed Particulate Filter Passive Oxidation Study with ULSD and Biodiesel Blended Fuel

The development of PM and NOx reduction system with the combination of DOC included DPF and SCR catalyst in addition to the AOC sub-assembly for NH3 slip protection is described. DPF regeneration strategy and manual regeneration functionality are introduced with using ITH, HCI device on the EUI based EGR, VGT 12.3L diesel engine at the CVS full dilution tunnel test bench. With this system, PM and NOx emission regulation for JPNL was satisfied and DPF regeneration process under steady state condition and transient condition (JE05 mode) were successfully fulfilled. Influence of Injection Timing and Piston Bowl Geometry on PCCI Combustion and Emissions

Premixed Charge Compression Ignition (PCCI), a Low Temperature Combustion (LTC) strategy for diesel engines is of increasing interest due to its potential to simultaneously reduce soot and NOx emissions. However, the influence of mixture preparation on combustion phasing and heat release rate in LTC is not fully understood. In the present study, the influence of injection timing on mixture preparation, combustion and emissions in PCCI mode is investigated by experimental and computational methods. A sequential coupling approach of 3D CFD with a Stochastic Reactor Model (SRM) is used to simulate the PCCI engine. The SRM accounts for detailed chemical kinetics, convective heat transfer and turbulent micro-mixing. In this integrated approach, the temperature-equivalence ratio statistics obtained using KIVA 3V are mapped onto the stochastic particle ensemble used in the SRM.

The Application of the Vincent Circle to Vibro-Acoustic and Duct Acoustic Problems

Over 30 years ago, A. H. Vincent of Westland Helicopters demonstrated that if a structure is excited harmonically, the response at another position (at a fixed frequency) will trace a circle in the complex plane as a result of a dynamic stiffness modification between two points. As either the real or imaginary part of an introduced dynamic stiffness is varied from minus infinity to plus infinity, the structural or acoustic response on any position will map a circle in the complex plane. This paper reviews the basis for this little known principle for vibro-acoustics problems and illustrates the viability for a cantilevered plate example. The applicability of the method is then considered for strictly acoustic systems like intake and exhaust systems. Specifically, it is shown that the response traces a circle in the complex plane if either the real or imaginary parts of the source or termination impedance are varied from minus to plus infinity.

Realization of Ground Effects on Snowmobile Pass-by Noise Testing

Noise concerns regarding snowmobiles have increased in the recent past. Current standards, such as SAE J192 are used as guidelines for government agencies and manufacturers to regulate noise emissions for all manufactured snowmobiles. Unfortunately, the test standards available today produce results with variability that is much higher than desired. The most significant contributor to the variation in noise measurements is the test surface. The test surfaces can either be snow or grass and affects the measurement in two very distinct ways: sound propagation from the source to the receiver and the operational behavior of the snowmobile. Data is presented for a known sound pressure speaker source and different snowmobiles on various test days and test surfaces. Relationships are shown between the behavior of the sound propagation and track interaction to the ground with the pass-by noise measurements.

Assessment of Multiple Injection Strategies in a Direct-Injection Hydrogen Research Engine

Hydrogen is widely considered a promising fuel for future transportation applications for both, internal combustion engines and fuel cells. Due to their advanced stage of development and immediate availability hydrogen combustion engines could act as a bridging technology towards a wide-spread hydrogen infrastructure. Although fuel cell vehicles are expected to surpass hydrogen combustion engine vehicles in terms of efficiency, the difference in efficiency might not be as significant as widely anticipated [1]. Hydrogen combustion engines have been shown capable of achieving efficiencies of up to 45 % [2]. One of the remaining challenges is the reduction of nitric oxide emissions while achieving peak engine efficiencies. This paper summarizes research work performed on a single-cylinder hydrogen direct injection engine at Argonne National Laboratory.

Expanding the Experimental Capabilities of the Ignition Quality Tester for Autoigniting Fuels

This paper reports the development of new fuel ignition quality and combustion experiments performed using the Ignition Quality Tester (IQT). Prior SAE papers (961182, 971636, 1999-01-3591, and 2001-01-3527) documented the development of the IQT constant volume combustion chamber experimental apparatus to measure ignition qualities of diesel-type fuels. The ASTM International test method D6890 was developed around the IQT device to allow the rapid determination of derived cetane number (DCN). Interest in chemical kinetic models for the ignition of diesel and biodiesel model compounds is increasing to support the development of advanced engines and fuels. However, rigorous experimental validation of these kinetic models has been limited for a variety of reasons. Shock tubes and rapid compression machines are typically limited to premixed gas-phase studies, for example.

Hydrogen Embrittlement of Commercially Produced Advanced High Strength Sheet Steels

The susceptibility of Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) was evaluated on selected high strength sheet steels (DP 600, TRIP 780, TRIP 980, TWIP-Al, TWIP, and Martensitic M220) and the results were compared to data on a lower strength (300 MPa tensile strength) low carbon steel. Tensile samples were cathodically charged and then immediately tensile tested to failure to analyze the mechanical properties of the as-charged steel. The effects of hydrogen on deformation and fracture behavior were evaluated through analysis of tensile properties, necking geometry, and SEM images of fracture surfaces and metallographic samples of deformed tensile specimens. The two fully austenitic TWIP steels were resistant to hydrogen effects in the laboratory charged tensile samples.

Enhancing the Performance of Microperforated Panel Absorbers by Designing Custom Backings

Micro-perforated (MPP) panels are acoustic absorbers that are non-combustible, acoustically tunable, lightweight, and environmentally friendly. In most cases, they are spaced from a wall, and that spacing determines the frequency range where the absorber performs well. The absorption is maximized when the particle velocity in the perforations is high. Accordingly, the absorber performs best when positioned approximately a quarter acoustic wavelength from the wall, and larger cavity depths improve the low frequency absorption. At multiples of one half acoustic wavelength, the absorption is minimal. Additionally, the absorption is minimal at low frequencies due to the limited cavity depth behind the MPP. By partitioning the backing cavity, the cavity depth can be strategically increased and varied. This will improve the absorption at low frequencies and can provide absorption over a wide frequency range.

Simulation of Enclosures Including Attached Duct Work

Partial enclosures are commonly utilized to reduce the radiated noise from equipment. Often, enclosure openings are fitted with silencers or louvers to further reduce the noise emitted. In the past, the boundary element method (BEM) has been applied to predict the insertion loss of the airborne path with good agreement with measurement. However, an alteration at the opening requires a new model and additional computational time. In this paper, a transfer function method is proposed to reduce the time required to assess the effect of modifications to an enclosure. The proposed method requires that the impedance at openings be known. Additionally, transfer functions relating the sound pressure at one opening to the volume velocity at other openings must be measured or determined using simulation. It is assumed that openings are much smaller than an acoustic wavelength. The sound power from each opening is determined from the specific acoustic impedance and sound pressure at the opening.

Adding Bypass Ducts to Enhance Muffler Performance without Increasing Size

It was demonstrated that a bypass duct similar to a Herschel- Quincke tube could be used to increase the transmission loss of mufflers at selected frequencies. In many cases, the duct can be short and thought of as a leak. It was shown that the optimal length and cross-sectional area could be determined by using a simple optimization technique known as the Vincent Circle. Most importantly, it was demonstrated that the attenuation at low frequencies could be improved by as much as 15 dB. To prove the concept, a muffler was designed and optimized using transfer matrix theory. Then, the optimized muffler was constructed and the transmission loss measured using the two-load method. The measured results compared well with prediction from transfer matrix theory. Boundary element simulation was then used to further study the attenuation mechanism.

Measurement of Diesel Spray Formation and Combustion upon Different Nozzle Geometry using Hybrid Imaging Technique

High pressure diesel sprays were visualized under vaporizing and combusting conditions in a constant-volume combustion vessel. Near-simultaneous visualization of vapor and liquid phase fuel distribution were acquired using a hybrid shadowgraph/Mie-scattering imaging setup. This imaging technique used two pulsed LED's operating in an alternative manner to provide proper light sources for both shadowgraph and Mie scattering. In addition, combustion cases under the same ambient conditions were visualized through high-speed combustion luminosity measurement. Two single-hole diesel injectors with same nozzle diameters (100μm) but different k-factors (k0 and k1.5) were tested in this study. Detailed analysis based on spray penetration rate curves, rate of injection measurements, combustion indicators and 1D model comparison have been performed.

Reduction of Steady-State CFD HVAC Simulations into a Fully Transient Lumped Parameter Network

Since transient vehicle HVAC computational fluids (CFD) simulations take too long to solve in a production environment, the goal of this project is to automatically create a lumped-parameter flow network from a steady-state CFD that solves nearly instantaneously. The data mining algorithm k-means is implemented to automatically discover flow features and form the network (a reduced order model). The lumped-parameter network is implemented in the commercial thermal solver MuSES to then run as a fully transient simulation. Using this network a “localized heat transfer coefficient” is shown to be an improvement over existing techniques. Also, it was found that the use of the clustering created a new flow visualization technique. Finally, fixing clusters near equipment newly demonstrates a capability to track localized temperatures near specific objects (such as equipment in vehicles).

Cost reduction in the automotive industry becomes a widely-adopted operational strategy not only for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) that take cost leader generic corporation strategy, but also for many OEMs that take differentiation generic corporation strategy. Since differentiation generic strategy requires an organization to provide a product or service above the industry average level, a premium is typically included in the tag price for those products or services. Cost reduction measures could increase risks for the organizations that pursue differentiation strategy. Although manufacturers in the automotive industry dramatically improved production efficiency in past ten years, they are still facing the pressure of cost control. The big challenge in cost control for automakers and suppliers is increasing prices of raw materials, energy and labor costs. These costs create constraints for the traditional economic expansion model.

Using the Reciprocal Work Identity to Evaluate the Transmission Loss of Mufflers

Transmission loss (TL) is a good performance measure of mufflers since it represents the muffler's inherent capability of sound attenuation. There are several existing numerical methods, which have been widely used to calculate the TL from numerical simulation results, such as the four-pole and three-point methods. In this paper, a new approach is proposed to evaluate the transmission loss based on the reciprocal work identity. The proposed method does not assume plane wave propagation in the inlet and outlet ducts, and more importantly, does not explicitly apply the anechoic termination impedance at the outlet. As a result, it has the potential of extending TL computation above the plane wave cut-off frequency.

Effects of Chemical Composition, Heat Treatment, and Microstructure in Splittable Forged Steel Connecting Rods

Fracture split forged steel connecting rods are utilized in many new high performance automotive engines to increase durability. Higher strength levels are needed as the power density increases. Fracture splitting without plastic deformation is necessary for manufacturability. Metallurgical design is a key for achieving the required performance levels. Several medium carbon steels containing 0.07 wt pct P, 0.06 wt pct S and various amounts of Mn, Si, V, and N were produced by vacuum induction melting laboratory heats and hot working the cast ingots into plates. The plates were cooled at varying rates to simulate typical cooling methods after forging. Microstructures were generally ferrite and pearlite as evaluated by light optical and scanning electron microscopy. Mechanical properties were determined by standard tensile tests, high strain rate notched tensile tests, and Charpy V-notch impact tests to assess “splittability”.

Carbon and Manganese Effects on Quenching and Partitioning Response of CMnSi-Steels

Quenching and partitioning (Q&P) is a novel heat treatment to produce third generation advanced high-strength steels (AHSS). The influence of carbon on mechanical properties of Q&P treated CMnSi-steels was studied using 0.3C-1.5Mn-1.5Si and 0.4C-1.5Mn-1.5Si alloys. Full austenitization followed by two-step Q&P treatments were conducted using varying partitioning times and a fixed partitioning temperature of 400 °C. The results were compared to literature data for 0.2C-1.6Mn-1.6Si, 0.2-3Mn-1.6Si and 0.3-3Mn-1.6Si Q&P treated steels. The comparison showed that increasing the carbon content from 0.2 to 0.4 wt pct increased the ultimate tensile strength by 140 MPa per 0.1 wt pct C up to 1611 MPa without significantly decreasing ductility for the partitioning conditions used. Increased alloy carbon content did not substantially increase the retained austenite fractions. The best combinations of ultimate tensile strength and total elongation were obtained using short partitioning times.

Vibration Control of MR-Damped Vehicle Suspension System Using PID Controller Tuned by Particle Swarm Optimization

Proportional integral derivative (PID) control technique is the most common control algorithm applied in various engineering applications. Also, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is extensively applied in various optimization problems. This paper introduces an investigation into the use of a PSO algorithm to tune the PID controller for a semi-active vehicle suspension system incorporating magnetorheological (MR) damper to improve the ride comfort and vehicle stability. The proposed suspension system consists of a system controller that determine the desired damping force using a PID controller tuned using PSO, and a continuous state damper controller that estimate the command voltage that is required to track the desired damping force. The PSO technique is applied to solve the nonlinear optimization problem to find the PID controller gains by identifying the optimal problem solution through cooperation and competition among the individuals of a swarm.

The Visualization of Soot Late in the Diesel Combustion Process by Laser Induced Incandescence with a Vertical Laser Sheet

Although soot-formation processes in diesel engines have been well characterized during the mixing-controlled burn, little is known about the distribution of soot throughout the combustion chamber after the end of appreciable heat release during the expansion and exhaust strokes. Hence, the laser-induced incandescence (LII) diagnostic was developed to visualize the distribution of soot within an optically accessible single-cylinder direct-injection diesel engine during this period. The developed LII diagnostic is semi-quantitative; i.e., if certain conditions (listed in the Appendix) are true, it accurately captures spatial and temporal trends in the in-cylinder soot field. The diagnostic features a vertically oriented and vertically propagating laser sheet that can be translated across the combustion chamber, where “vertical” refers to a direction parallel to the axis of the cylinder bore.

Design of Double-Tuned Helmholtz Resonators Created by Punching Small Slots on a Thin-Walled Tube to Reduce Low-Frequency Tonal Noise

Helmholtz resonators are often used in the design of vehicle mufflers to target tonal noise at a few specific low frequencies generated by the engine. Due to the uncertainty of temperature variations and different engine speeds, multiple resonators may have to be built in series to cover a narrow band of frequencies. Double-tuned Helmholtz resonators (DTHR) normally consist of two chambers connected in series. Openings or necks are created by punching small slots into a thin-walled tube which provide a natural neck passage to the enclosing volume of the Helmholtz resonator. In this paper, numerical analyses using both the boundary element (BEM) and the finite element (FEM) methods are performed and simulation results are compared against one another. A typical real-world muffler configuration commonly used in passenger vehicles is used in a case study.

Measurement of the Transmission Loss of Thin Panels Using the Two-Load Impedance Tube Method

The two-load method is used to measure the transmission loss of thin panels in two different sized impedance tubes (3.49 cm and 10.16 cm). Samples were initially tested with a clamped boundary condition. This was followed by tests with an elastomer inserted between the tube and tested sample to adjust the boundary condition at the periphery. In all tests performed, the influence of the sample holding method could not be removed from the test. The measured transmission loss was compared to finite element simulation with good agreement for both impedance tubes. Additionally, the effect of a compliant boundary condition along the periphery of the sample was also validated via simulation.
