Improvement and Validation of Hybrid III Dummy Knee Finite Element Model

The public Hybrid III family finite element models have been used in simulation of automotive safety research widely. The validity of an ATD finite element model is largely dependent on the accuracy of model structure and accurate material property parameters especially for the soft material. For Hybrid III 50th percentile male dummy model, the femur load is a vital parameter for evaluating the injury risks of lower limbs, so the importance of accuracy of knee subcomponent model is obvious. The objective of this work was to evaluate the accuracy of knee subcomponent model and improve the validity of it. Comparisons between knee physical model and knee finite element model were conducted for both structure and property of material. The inaccuracy of structure and the material model of the published model were observed.

An Augmented around View Monitor System Fusing Depth and Image Information during the Reversing Process

The around view monitor (AVM) system for vehicles usually suffers from the distortion of surrounding objects caused by incomplete rectification and stitching, which seriously affects the driver's judgment of the surrounding environment during the reversing process. In response to solve this problem, an augmented around view monitor (AAVM) system fusing image and depth information is proposed, which highlights the point clouds of persons or vehicles at the rear of the vehicle. First, an around view image is generated from four fisheye cameras. Then, the calibration of multi TOF cameras is conducted to improve their accuracy of depth estimation and obtain extrinsic camera positions. Next, the 2D-driven object point cloud detection method is proposed to localize and segment object point clouds like vehicles or persons.

MTCNN-KCF-deepSORT:Driver Face Detection and Tracking Algorithm Based on Cascaded Kernel Correlation Filtering and Deep SORT

The driver's face detection and tracking method important for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving in various situations. The deep SORT algorithm has integrated appearance information, the motion model and the intersection-over-union (IOU) distance methods, and has been applied to face tracking, but it depends on detection information in every frame. Once the detection information lacks, the deep SORT algorithm will wait until the target detects bounding boxes appear again, even if the target didn’t disappear or shield. Hence, we propose to use a new tracker that not completely depend on the detection algorithm to cascade with the deep SORT algorithm to realize stable driver's face tracking. At first, the driver's face detection and tracking will be accomplished by the MTCNN-deep-SORT algorithm.

New Attempts on Vehicle Suspension Systems Modeling and Its Application on Dynamical Load Analysis

Suspension system dynamics can be obtained by various methods and vehicle design has gained great advantages over the dynamics analysis. By employing the new Udwadia-Kalaba equation, we endeavor some attempts on its application to dynamic modeling of vehicle suspension systems. The modeling approach first segments the suspension system into several component subsystems with kinematic constraints at the segment points released. The equations of motion of the unconstrained subsystems are thus easily obtained. Then by applying the second order constraints, the suspension system dynamics is then obtained. The equations are of closed-form. Having the equations obtained, we then show its application on dynamical load analysis. The solutions for the dynamical loads at interested hard points are obtained. We use the double wishbone suspension to show the systematic approach is easy handling.

A New Control Strategy for Electric Power Steering on Low Friction Roads

In vehicles equipped with conventional Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems, the steering effort felt by the driver can be unreasonably low when driving on slippery roads. This may lead inexperienced drivers to steer more than what is required in a turn and risk losing control of the vehicle. Thus, it is sensible for tire-road friction to be accounted for in the design of future EPS systems. This paper describes the design of an auxiliary EPS controller that manipulates torque delivery of current EPS systems by supplying its motor with a compensation current controlled by a fuzzy logic algorithm that considers tire-road friction among other factors. Moreover, a steering system model, a nonlinear vehicle dynamics model and a Dugoff tire model are developed in MATLAB/Simulink. Physical testing is conducted to validate the virtual model and confirm that steering torque decreases considerably on low friction roads.

Multi-Objective Discrete Robust Optimization for Pedestrian Head Protection

Optimization design for vehicle front-end structures has proven rather essential and been extensively used to improve the vehicle performance. Nevertheless, the front-end structure needs to meet the requirement of both pedestrian safety and structural stiffness which are somewhat contradicting to each other. Furthermore, an optimal design could become less meaningful or even unacceptable when some uncertainties present. In the paper, a multi-objective discrete robust optimization (MODRO) algorithm is used to minimize the injury of head and maximize the structural stiffness involving uncertainties. MODRO algorithm is achieved by coupling grey relational analysis (GRA) and principal component analysis (PCA) with Taguchi method. The optimized result shows that the MODRO algorithm improved performance of pedestrian head injury and robustness of the vehicle front-end structure.

Analysis to the Impact of Monolith Geometric Parameters on Emission Conversion Performance Based on an Improved Three-way Catalytic Converter Simulation Model

This paper describes an improved mathematical model to study the emission conversion effectiveness of a three-way catalytic converter, which employed detailed chemical reaction mechanism. The model also accounts for adsorption/release of oxygen in the catalyst monolith under non-stoichiometric A/F conditions. A commercial CFD code FLUENT was utilized to solve the governing equations for flow and pressure drop and to simulate the transient process in a three-way catalytic converter in a multi-dimensional manner. A comparison between simulation results and experimental data for a three-way catalyst was conducted and a good agreement was observed. Based on the improved model, some geometric parameters were studied for an elliptic monolith catalyst, which are widely used in today's converter systems because of its advantages in packaging.

Dyno Test Investigations of Gasoline Engine Fueled with Butanol-Gasoline Blends

As the issue of oil shortage and air pollution caused by automotive engine emissions become more and more serious day by day, researchers and engineers from all over the world are seeking for alternative fuels of lower pollution and renewable nature. This paper discusses in detail the feasibility of fueling gasoline engines with Butanol-gasoline blends. Besides the production, transportation, storage, physical and chemical properties of Butanol-gasoline blends, the combustion characteristics were analyzed as well. As the result Butanol was considered an excellent alternative fuel for gasoline engines, with many unique advantages superior to Natural Gas, LPG, Carbinol and Ethanol, the latter are widely studied at present time. In order to validate the above conclusions in engine application, engine dyno tests were conducted for a gasoline engine fueled with different concentrations of Butanol blend ranging from 10% to up to 35%.

Introduction of Two New Pediatric Finite Element Models for Pedestrian and Occupant Protections

To help predict the injury responses of child pedestrians and occupants in traffic incidents, finite element (FE) modeling has become a common research tool. Until now, there was no whole-body FE model for 10-year-old (10 YO) children. This paper introduces the development of two 10 YO whole-body pediatric FE models (named CHARM-10) with a standing posture to represent a pedestrian and a seated posture to represent an occupant with sufficient anatomic details. The geometric data was obtained from medical images and the key dimensions were compared to literature data. Component-level sub-models were built and validated against experimental results of post mortem human subjects (PMHS). Most of these studies have been mostly published previously and briefly summarized in this paper. For the current study, focus was put on the late stage model development.

Numerical Study on Controllability of Natural Gas and Diesel Dual Fuel Combustion in a Heavy-Duty Engine

Natural gas is a promising alternative fuel for internal combustion engines due to its rich reserves and low price, as well as good physical and chemical properties. Its low carbon structure and high octane number are beneficial for CO2 reduction and knock mitigation, respectively. Diesel and natural gas dual fuel combustion is a viable pathway to utilize natural gas in diesel engines. To achieve high efficiency and low emission combustion in a practical diesel engine over a wide range of operating conditions, understanding the performance responses to engine system parameter variations is needed. The controllability of two combustion strategies, diesel pilot ignition (DPI) and single injection reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI), were evaluated using the multi-dimension CFD simulation in this paper.

Modeling and Analysis of Microwave Regeneration Process in Wall-Flow Diesel Particulate Filter

To meet more stringent emission regulations for diesel engines, diesel particulate filters (DPF) have been widely used for diesel engines. However, the DPF regeneration is a great challenge for fuel economy. In this paper, a mathematical model characterizing the microwave regeneration process of a wall-flow particulate filter is introduced to better understand the process. Based on this model, important parameters such as evolutions of the energy stream densities of microwaves, wall temperature, regeneration efficiency and the pressure drop in the filters, both cordierite and SiC, are investigated. These results can provide an important theoretical guide for optimizing and controlling the microwave regeneration process.

Optimization of the Realizable k - ε Turbulence Model Especially for the Simulation of Road Vehicle

Realizable k-ε turbulence model has been used widely for engineering development. In this turbulence model, the default values of empirical coefficients such as C₂, σk and σε are obtained from some particular experiments. They are a good choice for most simulations-though may be not the best choice for simulating the aerodynamic characteristics of road vehicle. In order to improve the accuracy of simulation, a set of new empirical coefficients should be designed especially for simulating the aerodynamic characteristics of road vehicle. These empirical coefficients are found out by DoE (design of experiments) in this paper. Firstly the value range of empirical coefficients is decided by the laws that the aerodynamic force coefficients change with altering of empirical coefficients. Secondly 20 sets of empirical coefficients are obtained randomly by applying optimal Latin Hypercube method in Isight.

Influences on Combustion Characteristics and Performances of EGR vs. Lean Burn in a Gasoline Engine

Due to its load control strategy via fresh charge quantity, pumping loss in a homogenous charge gasoline engine is a significant contributor to the high fuel consumption rate at light load. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and lean burn technologies are the common means to reduce gasoline engine pumping loss for fuel economy improvement. Many previous publications compared the EGR and lean burn concepts. However, few of those were able to compare the EGR and lean burn concepts under the same in-cylinder dilution basis. Usually the un-swept in-cylinder residual gas fraction (RGF), which can be significant at very low loads, was ignored due to lack of appropriate method to determine it. Also the theoretical potential and practical limitations were rarely discussed. In this paper, a Naturally Aspirated (NA) gasoline engine was systematically tested for both the EGR and lean mixture concepts on an engine dyno. under the same speed and load conditions.

Handling Stability Optimization of Mining Dump Truck Based on Parameter Identification

Good handling stability becomes very important for heavily-laden electric wheel dump trucks that are operated on rough roads. To improve handling stability of mining dump trucks, nonlinear stiffness and nonlinear damping of the hydro-pneumatic suspension were considered as optimization variables. In this paper, based on the Daubechies wavelet's compactness and regularization and least-square method, the nonlinear stiffness and damping are identified. In order to verify the results of the parameter identification, the multi-body system dynamic model of the truck was built in ADAMS/view. By comparing the simulated results and tested ones, we find acceleration-history and power spectral density of acceleration are very close. And then, based on the approximate model method, the optimization model was built in ISIGHT. The nitrogen column and the orifice diameter were defined as the design variables. Finally, the handling stability was optimized by applying the genetic algorithms method.

An Efficient Path Planning Methodology Based on the Starting Region Selection

Automated parking is an efficient way to solve parking difficulties and path planning is of great concern for parking maneuvers [1]. Meanwhile, the starting region of path planning greatly affects the parking process and efficiency. The present research of the starting region are mostly determined based on a single algorithm, which limits the flexibility and efficiency of planning feasible paths. This paper, taking parallel parking and vertical parking for example, proposes a method to calculate the starting region and select the most suitable path planning algorithm for parking, which can improve the parking efficiency and reduce the complexity. The collision situations of each path planning algorithm are analyzed under collision-free conditions based on parallel and vertical parking. The starting region for each algorithm can then be calculated under collision-free conditions.

Optimal Cooperative Path Planning Considering Driving Intention for Shared Control

This paper presents an optimal cooperative path planning method considering driver’s driving intention for shared control to address target path conflicts during the driver-automation interaction by using the convex optimization technique based on the natural cubic spline. The optimal path criteria (e.g. the optimal curvature, the optimal heading angle) are formulated as quadratic forms using the natural cubic spline, and the initial cooperative path profiles of the cooperative path in the Frenet-based coordinate system are induced by considering the driver’s lane-changing intention recognized by the Support Vector Machine (SVM) method. Then, the optimal cooperative path could be obtained by the convex optimization techniques. The noncooperative game theory is adopted to model the driver-automation interaction in this shared control framework, where the Nash equilibrium solution is derived by the model predictive control (MPC) approach.

Bumper Airbag Design and Experiment for Pedestrian Protection

Researches on pedestrian protection have become a very important theme in automotive industry. Design for vehicle front-bumper system has proven rather essential and been extensively used to improve the vehicle performance of pedestrian protection. However, there are some limitations in the design of vehicle front-bumper system to meet a multiple-pedestrian impact conditions at the same time. In order to improve the vehicle performance of lower extremity and pelvis protection for pedestrian, a new type of front bumper airbag was developed. Firstly, based on European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro-NCAP), the Flexible Pedestrian Legform Impactor (Flex-PLI) to vehicle and Upper Pedestrian Legform Impactor (U-PLI) to vehicle impact tests are carried out to evaluate the pedestrian protection performance of the initial structure.

Development of a Neck Finite Element Model with Active Muscle Force for the THOR-50M Numerical Dummy

With the development of active safety technology, effort has gradually shifted to preventing or minimizing car crashes. Automatic Emergency Braking Technology (AEB) can avoid accidents by warning and even automatic braking, but there is a contradiction between the accompanying occupant out-of-position and traditional passive safety design. In addition, the 2025 version of C-NCAP plans to add neck injury assessment requirements for AEB [1]. In order to study the kinematic response of the occupant's neck under AEB, a neck finite element model with active muscle force is established in this paper. Firstly, the open-source THOR-50M neck geometric model is used for finite element discretization. Secondly, the neck FE model of THOR-50M is verified through the qualification procedure of the NHTSA standard. Thirdly, according to the geometric features of human neck muscles in Zygote Body database, the neck muscle parameters are preliminarily determined.

An SVM-Based Method Combining AEB and Airbag Systems to Reduce Injury of Unbelted Occupants

An autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system can detect emergency conditions using sensors (e.g., radar and camera) to automatically activate the braking actuator without driver input. However, during the hard braking phase, crash conditions for the restraint system can easily change (e.g., vehicle velocity and occupant position), causing an out-of-position (OOP) phenomenon, especially for unbelted occupants entering the airbag deployment range, which may lead to more severe injuries than in a normal position. A critical step in reducing the injury of unbelted occupants would be to design an AEB system while considering the effect of deployed airbags on the occupants. Thus far, few studies have paid attention to the compatibility between AEB and airbag systems for unbelted occupants. This study aims to provide a method that combines AEB and airbag systems to explore the potential injury reduction capabilities for unbelted occupants.

Study on the Key Preload Performance Parameters of an Active Reversible Preload Seatbelt (ARPS)

In order to provide an improved countermeasure for occupant protection, a new type of active reversible preload seatbelt (ARPS) is presented in this paper. The ARPS is capable of protecting occupants by reducing injuries during frontal collisions. ARPS retracts seatbelt webbing by activating an electric motor attached to the seatbelt retractor. FCW (Forward Collision Warning) and LDW (Lane Departure Warning) provide signals as a trigger to activate the electric motor to retract the seatbelt webbing, thus making the occupant restraint system work more effectively in a crash. It also helps reduce occupant’s forward movement during impact process via braking. Four important factors such as preload force, preload velocity and the length and timing of webbing retraction play influential roles in performance of the ARPS. This paper focuses on studying preload performance of ARPS under various test conditions to investigate effects of the aforementioned factors.
