Development, Verification, and Validation of Penn State Extended Range Electric Vehicle

The Pennsylvania State University is one of 16 North American universities that participated in the EcoCAR advanced vehicle technology competition (http://www.ecocarchallenge.org/). A series-hybrid-electric vehicle based on a General Motors crossover SUV platform has been designed, built and tested for this purpose. The powertrain features a 1.3 L turbodiesel engine running on a B20 fuel system, a 75kW generator directly coupled to the engine and advanced lithium-ion batteries. In this paper, the vehicle architecture and control strategy are detailed and performance predictions (e.g., acceleration, fuel consumption and emissions) are presented. This includes discussion of the development process that led to the selected designs. The predicted performance is compared with data obtained on a chassis dynamometer and during on-road measurements over specified drive cycles. Presenter Shawn Getty

The need for light-weighting of automotive structures has spurred on a tremendous amount of interest in and development of low cost carbon fiber composite materials and manufacturing. This presentation provides a description of the commercial carbon fiber concept compared to traditional aerospace and specialty carbon fiber products. A specific update is presented on the development and commercialization of new low cost carbon fiber based on lignin / PAN precursor technology. The second focus of the presentation is on carbon fiber composite manufacturing processes, including carbon SMC, RTM, prepregs, and thermoplastic processes. Catalyzed Particulate Filter Passive Oxidation Study with ULSD and Biodiesel Blended Fuel

The development of PM and NOx reduction system with the combination of DOC included DPF and SCR catalyst in addition to the AOC sub-assembly for NH3 slip protection is described. DPF regeneration strategy and manual regeneration functionality are introduced with using ITH, HCI device on the EUI based EGR, VGT 12.3L diesel engine at the CVS full dilution tunnel test bench. With this system, PM and NOx emission regulation for JPNL was satisfied and DPF regeneration process under steady state condition and transient condition (JE05 mode) were successfully fulfilled. This practice is in consideration of the design limitation of some battery packs while utilizing applicable common air or tracer gas leak tightness technologies.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) provides guidance to develop and assure validation and verification of IVHM systems used in autonomous aircraft, vehicles and driver assistance functions. IVHM covers a vehicle, monitoring and data processing functions inherent within its sub-systems, and the tools and processes used to manage and restore the vehicle’s health. The scope of this document is to address challenges and identify recommendations for the application of integrated vehicle health management (IVHM) specifically to intelligent systems performing tasks autonomously within the mobility sector. This document will focus on the core aspects of IVHM for autonomous vehicles that are common to both aerospace and automotive applications. It is anticipated that additional documents will be developed separately to cover aspects of this functionality that are unique to each application domain.

SAE J#### establishes the protocol and process limits for hydrogen fueling of light duty vehicles when the fuel delivery temperature is not pre-cooled, so called “ambient fueling” designated by Table 1 of SAE J2601-2014. These process limits (including the fuel delivery temperature, the maximum fuel flow rate, the rate of pressure increase and the ending pressure) are affected by factors such as ambient temperature, fuel delivery temperature and initial pressure in the vehicle’s compressed hydrogen storage system. SAE J#### establishes standard fueling protocols based on a series of design cases representing fueling system engineering categories. These categories are intended to provide performance targets which allow decreasing fueling times relative to the most simple design case. Similar to the table and formula based approaches of SAE J2601-2014, this approach establishes a minimum performance criteria leaving open options for innovation to decrease fueling times.

This SAE RP provides a set of test methods and practices for the characterization of the properties of lithium battery anode active materials. Lithium battery anode active materials can be grouped in one of the following categories: lithium intercalation materials (including graphite, Li4Ti5O12); lithium alloying materials (including Sn, Si compounds/composites); lithium deposition materials (lithium metal). For the purposes of this document, material properties will be examined for particulate anode active materials (graphite, Li4TiO5, Sn compounds, Si compounds) and for metallic films (lithium metal). It is not within the scope of this document to establish criteria for the test results, as this is usually established between the vendor and customer It is not within the scope of this document to examine the electrochemical properties of anode materials since these are influenced by electrode design.

The load points and associated fuel consumption rates will be measured as the engine operates on the engine speed governor, reflecting how the user will operate the equipment. The fuel consumption calculated in gallons of useage per hour will be derived from a specified engine speed and load map to be communicated universally to end users.

This Aerospace Information Report (AIR) is a historical technical record describing procedures, required continuous sampling conditions, and instrumentation for the measurement of non-volatile particle number and mass concentrations from the exhaust of aircraft gas turbine engines. Procedures are included to calculate sampling loss performance. This AIR is not intended for in-flight testing, nor does it apply to engine operating in the afterburning mode.

This Aerospace Information Report is a historical technical record of the initial document detailing the measurement of non-volatile particle emissions at the exit plane of aircraft gas turbine engines. This methodology was adopted by ICAO into Annex 16 Vol II and updated into Aerospace Recommended Practice ARP6320.

Future updates of this document may include explanations of the reasoning and assumptions used to develop this measurement methodology.
