Efficiency and Emissions-Optimized Operating Strategy of a High-pressure Direct Injection Hydrogen Engine for Heavy-duty Trucks

Hydrogen engines are required to provide high thermal efficiency and low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. There are many possible combinations of injection pressure, injection timing, ignition timing, lambda and EGR rate that can be used in a direct-injection system for achieving such performance. In this study, several different combinations of injection and ignition timings were classified as possible combustion regimes, and experiments were conducted to make clear the differences in combustion conditions attributable to these timings. Lambda and the EGR rate were also evaluated for achieving the desired performance, and indicated thermal efficiency of over 45% was obtained at IMEP of 0.95 MPa. It was found that a hydrogen engine with a high-pressure direct-injection system has a high potential for improving thermal efficiency and reducing NOx emissions.

Impact of Fuelling Techniques on Neat n-Butanol Combustion and Emissions in a Compression Ignition Engine

This study investigated neat n-butanol combustion, emissions and thermal efficiency characteristics in a compression ignition (CI) engine by using two fuelling techniques - port fuel injection (PFI) and direct injection (DI). Diesel fuel was used in this research for reference. The engine tests were conducted on a single-cylinder four-stroke DI diesel engine with a compression ratio of 18.2 : 1. An n-Butanol PFI system was installed to study the combustion characteristics of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI). A common-rail fuel injection system was used to conduct the DI tests with n-butanol and diesel. 90 MPa injection pressure was used for the DI tests. The engine was run at 1500 rpm. The intake boost pressure, engine load, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) ratio, and DI timing were independently controlled to investigate the engine performance.

Investigation of Fuel Injection Strategies for Direct Injection of Neat n-Butanol in a Compression Ignition Engine

In this study, impacts of neat n-butanol fuel injection parameters on direct injection (DI) compression ignition (CI) engine performance were investigated to gain knowledge for understanding the fuel injection strategies for n-butanol. The engine tests were conducted on a four-stroke single-cylinder DI CI engine with a compression ratio of 18.2:1. The effects of fuel injection pressure (40, 60 and 90 MPa) and injection timing in a single injection strategy were investigated. The results showed that an increase in injection pressure significantly reduced nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions which is the opposite trend seen in conventional diesel combustion. The parallel use of a higher injection pressure and retarded injection timing was a proposed method to reduce NOx and cylinder pressure rise rate simultaneously. NOx was further reduced by using exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) while keeping near zero soot emissions.

Direct Injection Diesel Engine Operated with Propane - DME Blended Fuel

A novel way of using low-cetane-number petroleum gases in a compression ignition (CI) engine is introduced, by directly injecting blends of such fuels with dimethyl ether (DME), a high-cetane-number alternative fuel for low soot emissions. This method both extends advantages of DME and complements its deficiency. Although DME mixes with most hydrocarbon fuels in any ratio, in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the new method and facilitate the analysis, DME-propane blends were investigated in a direct injection CI engine. Some findings of the study are listed. In the engine operated by DME and propane blends, there was no need for significantly increasing the complexity of the fuel system than that employed in the use of neat DME. For the same reason, this method eliminates or minimizes cumbersome hardware necessary when the said gaseous fuels are separately introduced in CI engines.

Performance and Emissions of a DI Diesel Engine Operated with LPG and Ignition Improving Additives

This research investigated the performance and emissions of a direct injection (DI) Diesel engine operated on 100% butane liquid petroleum gas (LPG). The LPG has a low cetane number, therefore di-tertiary-butyl peroxide (DTBP) and aliphatic hydrocarbon (AHC) were added to the LPG (100% butane) to enhance cetane number. With the cetane improver, stable Diesel engine operation over a wide range of the engine loads was possible. By changing the concentration of DTBP and AHC several different LPG blended fuels were obtained. In-cylinder visualization was also used in this research to check the combustion behavior. LPG and only AHC blended fuel showed NOX emission increased compared to Diesel fuel operation. Experimental result showed that the thermal efficiency of LPG powered Diesel engine was comparable to Diesel fuel operation. Exhaust emissions measurements showed that NOX and smoke could be considerably reduced with the blend of LPG, DTBP and AHC.

In this study, performance and emissions characteristics of an LPG direct injection (DI) engine with a rotary distributor pump were examined by using cetane enhanced LPG fuel developed for diesel engines. Results showed that stable engine operation was possible for a wide range of engine loads. Also, engine output power with cetane enhanced LPG was comparable to diesel fuel operation. Exhaust emissions measurements showed NOx and smoke could be reduced with the cetane enhanced LPG fuel. Experimental model vehicle with an in-line plunger pump has received its license plate in June 2000 and started high-speed tests on a test course. It has already been operated more than 15,000 km without any major failure. Another, experimental model vehicle with a rotary distributor pump was developed and received its license plate to operate on public roads.

Dual-Fuel Diesel Engine Using Butane

The authors tried to use LP gas, mainly butane, as the main fuel of diesel engines to reduce soot and to maintain high thermal efficiency. LP gas was injected in the direction of the intake valve directly as a spray to prevent knocking and to preserve high charging efficiency. The newly developed electronic fuel injection provided accurate fuel control and injection timing. As a result, the dual-fuel operation produced high thermal efficiency almost identical to that of diesel engines. Soot in engine exhaust was almost negligible. Three quarters of maximum output was obtained with butane, and only small amount of gas oil for idling, in spite of an high compression ratio of 17 for gas engines. Increasing the proportion of gas oil resulted in maximum output from a diesel engine and almost no soot output.

Emission Analysis of HCCI Combustion in a Diesel Engine Fueled by Butanol

Advances in engine technology in recent years have led to significant reductions in the emission of pollutants and gains in efficiency. As a facet of investigations into clean, efficient combustion, the homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) mode of combustion can improve upon the thermal efficiency and nitrogen oxides emission of conventional spark ignition engines. With respect to conventional diesel engines, the low nitrogen oxides and particulate matter emissions reduce the requirements on the aftertreatment system to meet emission regulations. In this paper, n-butanol, an alcohol fuel with the potential to be derived from renewable sources, was used in a light-duty diesel research engine in the HCCI mode of combustion. Control of the combustion was implemented using the intake pressure and external exhaust gas recirculation. The moderate reactivity of butanol required the assistance of increased intake pressure for ignition at the lower engine load range.

Hydrocarbon Speciation of Diesel Ignited Ethanol and Butanol Engines

Dual fuel applications of alcohol fuels such as ethanol or butanol through port injection with direct injection of diesel can be effective in reduction of NOx. However, these dual fuel applications are usually associated with an increase in the incomplete combustion products such as hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen (H2) emissions. An analysis of these products of incomplete combustion and the resulting combustion efficiency penalty was made in the diesel ignited alcohol combustion modes. The effect of EGR application was evaluated using ethanol and butanol as the port injected fuel, with varying alcohol fractions at the mid-load condition (10 -12 bar IMEP). The impact of varying the engine load (5 bar to 19 bar IMEP) in the diesel ignited ethanol mode on the incomplete combustion products was also studied. Emission measurements were taken and the net fuel energy loss as a result of the incomplete combustion was estimated.

Mode Switching to Improve Low Load Efficiency of an Ethanol-Diesel Dual-Fuel Engine

The dual-fuel application using ethanol and diesel fuels can substantially improve the classical trade-off between oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and smoke, especially at moderate-to-high load conditions. However, at low engine load levels, the use of a low reactivity fuel in the dual-fuel application usually leads to increased incomplete combustion products that in turn result in a significant reduction of the engine thermal efficiency. In this work, engine tests are conducted on a high compression ratio, single cylinder dual-fuel engine that incorporates the diesel direct-injection and ethanol port-injection. Engine load levels are identified, at which, diesel combustion offers better efficiency than the dual-fuel combustion while attaining low NOx and smoke emissions. Thereafter, a cycle-to-cycle based closed-loop controller is implemented for the combustion phasing and engine load control in both the diesel and dual-fuel combustion regimes.

Fuel and System Interaction Effects on Urea-SCR Control of NOx in Diesel Exhaust Aftertreatment

This work considers the performance of a NOx control system on a diesel engine and the interaction between the NOx and particulate control devices. A commercial urea-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst (twin catalytic reactors used in series) was characterized for the impact of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on the ammonia consumption, production of nitrous oxide (N2O) and relative selectivity of the urea-SCR catalyst for NO2 versus NO when the SCR reactors were positioned downstream of a catalyzed diesel particulate filter (DPF). The aqueous urea solution was injected into the exhaust by using a twin fluid, air-assisted atomizer. It was possible to observe the role of NO2 due to the catalyzed diesel particulate filter (DPF) upstream of the SCR catalyst. This catalyzed DPF oxidizes nitric oxide (NO) in the engine-out emissions to NO2. Further, it uses NO2 to oxidize particulate matter (PM).

Combustion and Emissions Performance of Low Sulfur, Ultra Low Sulfur and Biodiesel Blends in a DI Diesel Engine

Experiments were conducted with a commercially available six-cylinder, 4-valves per cylinder, turbocharged, direct injection (DI) diesel engine. The engine was operated with low sulfur diesel fuel, ultra low sulfur diesel fuel and two other blends, low sulfur diesel fuel with 20 wt.% biodiesel and ultra low sulfur diesel fuel with 20 wt.% biodiesel, to investigate the effect of the base fuels and their blends on combustion and emissions. Combustion analysis, particulate matter emissions and exhaust gas composition (CO, NOX and total hydrocarbons) were determined at eight steady-state operating conditions according to the AVL 8-Mode test protocol. Combustion analysis showed at high load conditions a retarded start of injection, an earlier start of combustion and a lower premixed burn peak with ultra low sulfur diesel fuel. Mode averaged NOX emissions decreased with ultra low sulfur diesel fuel and biodiesel blends compared to low sulfur diesel fuel.

Controlling the Heat Release in HCCI Combustion of DME with Methanol and EGR

The effects of methanol and EGR on HCCI combustion of dimethyl ether have been tested separately in a diesel engine. The engine was equipped with a common rail injection system which allowed for random injection of DME. The engine could therefore be operated either as a normal DI CI engine or, by advancing the injection timing 360 CAD, as an HCCI engine. The compression ratio of the engine was reduced to 14.5 by enlarging the piston bowls. The engine was operated in HCCI mode with DME at an equivalence ratio of 0.25. To retard the combustion timing, methanol was port fuel injected and the optimum quantity required was determined. The added methanol increased the BMEP by increasing the total heat release and retarding the combustion to after TDC. Engine knock was reduced with increasing quantities of methanol. The highest BMEP was achieved when the equivalence ratio of methanol was around 0.12 at 1000 RPM, and around 0.76 at 1800 RPM. EGR was also used to retarding the timing.

Experimental Study of CI Natural-Gas/DME Homogeneous Charge Engine

In this study, a homogeneous mixture of natural-gas and air was used in a compression ignition engine to reduce NOx emissions and improve thermal efficiency. In order to control ignition timing and combustion, a small amount of DME was mixed with the natural-gas. Engine performance and the exhaust characteristics were investigated experimentally. Results show the following: the engine can run over quite a large load range if a certain amount of DME is added into natural-gas. By optimizing the proportion of DME to natural-gas, NOx emissions can be lowered to near zero levels if the mixture is lean enough. Thermal efficiency is higher than that obtained with normal diesel fuel operation.

Performance of NOX Catalyst in a DI Diesel Engine Operated with Neat Dimethyl Ether

An experiment was conducted with a direct injection Diesel engine operated with neat dimethyl ether (DME). Main focus of this research is to investigate the performance of the catalysts designed for NOx reduction, such as Co–alumina and Sn–alumina catalysts, for the reduction of NOX and other unburned species contained in the exhaust gas. In the experiments, DME concentration in the exhaust gas was changed by adding extra DME before the catalytic reactor, which is the important experimental parameter in the research. Results showed that NOX reduction rate was not so high without any DME addition, because the content of unburned DME, reducing agent, is very low in the DME engine exhaust gas. However, NOX reduction rate increased with increase in DME content and it reached around 80% with enough DME addition. The NOX reduction rate increased with increase in reaction temperature up to around 300 °C.

Development of an LPG DI Diesel Engine Using Cetane Number Enhancing Additives

A feasibility study of an LPG DI diesel engine has been carried out to study the effectiveness of two selected cetane enhancing additives: Di-tertiary-butyl peroxide (DTBP) and 2-Ethylhexyl nitrate (EHN). When more than either 5 wt% DTBP or 3.5 wt% 2EHN was added to the base fuel (100 % butane), stable engine operation over a wide range of engine loads was possible (BMEPs of 0.03 to 0.60 MPa). The thermal efficiency of LPG fueled operation was found to be comparable to diesel fuel operation at DTBP levels over 5 wt%. Exhaust emissions measurements showed that NOx and smoke levels can be significantly reduced using the LPG+DTBP fuel blend compared to a light diesel fuel at the same experimental conditions. Correlations were derived for the measured ignition delay, BMEP, and either DTBP concentration or cetane number. When propane was added to a butane base fuel, the ignition delay became longer.

Clean Combustion in a Diesel Engine Using Direct Injection of Neat n-Butanol

The study investigated the characteristics of the combustion, the emissions and the thermal efficiency of a direct injection diesel engine fuelled with neat n-butanol. Engine tests were conducted on a single cylinder four-stroke direct injection diesel engine. The engine ran at 6.5 bar IMEP and 1500 rpm engine speed. The intake pressure was boosted to 1.0 bar (gauge), and the injection pressure was controlled at 60 or 90 MPa. The injection timing and the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate were adjusted to investigate the engine performance. The effect of the engine load on the engine performance was also investigated. The test results showed that the n-butanol fuel had significantly longer ignition delay than that of diesel fuel. n-Butanol generally led to a rapid heat release pattern in a short period, which resulted in an excessively high pressure rise rate. The pressure rise rate could be moderated by retarding the injection timing and lowering the injection pressure.

Development of LPG SI and CI engines for heavy duty vehicles has been carried out. In order to measure the performance and emissions of an LPG lean burn SI engine, the piston cavity, swirl ratio, and propane-butane fuel ratio were varied and tested. Compared to the bathtub and dog dish cavities, the nebula type cavity showed the best performance in terms of cyclic variation and combustion duration. High swirl improved combustion by achieving a high thermal efficiency and low NOx emissions. A feasibility study of an LPG DI diesel engine also has been carried out to study the effectiveness of the selected cetane enhancing additives:Di-tertiary-butyl peroxide (DTBP). When more than 5 wt% DTBP was added to the base fuel, stable engine operation over a wide range of engine loads was possible. The thermal efficiency of LPG fueled operation was found to be comparable to diesel fuel operation at DTBP levels over 5 wt%.

Summary and Progress of the Hydrogen ICE Truck Development Project

A development project for a hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) system for trucks supporting Japanese freightage has been promoted as a candidate for use in future vehicles that meet ultra-low emission and anti-global warming targets. This project aims to develop a hydrogen ICE truck that can handle the same freight as existing trucks. The core development technologies for this project are a direct-injection (DI) hydrogen ICE system and a liquid hydrogen tank system which has a liquid hydrogen pump built-in. In the first phase of the project, efforts were made to develop the DI hydrogen ICE system. Over the past three years, the following results have been obtained: A high-pressure hydrogen gas direct injector developed for this project was applied to a single-cylinder hydrogen ICE and the indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) corresponding to a power output of 147 kW in a 6-cylinder hydrogen ICE was confirmed.

Numerical Analysis of Carbon Monoxide Formation in DME Combustion

Dimethyl ether (DME) is an oxygenated fuel with the molecular formula CH₃OCH₃, economically produced from various energy sources, such as natural gas, coal and biomass. It has gained prominence as a substitute for diesel fuel in Japan and in other Asian countries, from the viewpoint of both energy diversification and environmental protection. The greatest advantage of DME is that it emits practically no particulate matter when used in compression ignition (CI) engine. However, one of the drawbacks of DME CI engine is the increase carbon monoxide (CO) emission in high-load and high exhaust gas circulation (EGR) regime. In this study, we have investigated the CO formation characteristics of DME CI combustion based on chemical kinetics.
