Uncertainty Optimization of Thin-walled Beam Crashworthiness Based on Approximate Model with Step Encryption Technology

Crashworthiness is one of the most important performances of vehicles, and the front rails are the main crash energy absorption parts during the frontal crashing process. In this paper, the front rail was simplified to a thin-walled beam with a cross section of single-hat which was made of steel and aluminum. And the two boards of it were connected by riveting without rivets. In order to optimize its crashworthiness, the thickness (t), radius (R) and the rivet spacing (d) were selected as three design variables, and its specific energy absorption was the objective while the average impact force was the constraint. Considering the error of manufacturing and measurements, the parameters σs and Et of the steel were selected as the uncertainty variables to improve the design reliability. The algorithm IP-GA and the approximate model-RBF (Radial Basis Function) were applied in this nonlinear uncertainty optimization.

Impact Simulation and Structural Optimization of a Vehicle CFRP Engine Hood in terms of Pedestrian Safety

With the rapidly developing automotive industry and stricter environmental protection laws and regulations, lightweight materials, advanced manufacturing processes and structural optimization methods are widely used in body design. Therefore, in order to evaluate and improve the pedestrian protection during a collision, this paper presents an impact simulation modeling and structural optimization method for a sport utility vehicle engine hood made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). Head injury criterion (HIC) was used to evaluate the performance of the hood in this regard. The inner panel and the outer panel of CFRP hood were discretized by shell elements in LS_DYNA. The Mat54-55 card was used to define the mechanical properties of the CFRP hood. In order to reduce the computational costs, just the parts contacted with the hood were modeled. The simulations were done in the prescribed 30 impact points.

Bi-Directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization for Crashworthiness Structures

Gradient based topology optimization method is difficult used to optimization of crashworthiness structures due to the expensive computational cost of sensitivity analysis and complex nonlinear behaviors (geometric nonlinearity, material nonlinearity and contact nonlinearity) of structures during a collision. Equivalent static loads (ESLs) method is one of the methods for nonlinear dynamic response optimization. However, this method ignores the material nonlinearity. Thus this paper proposes an improved topology optimization method for crashworthiness structure based on a modified ESLs method. A new calculation of ESLs considering material nonlinearity is proposed. The improved ESLs method is employed to transform the nonlinear dynamic response optimization into a nonlinear static response optimization with multiple load cases. Each element in the design domain is assigned with a design variable.

Crashworthiness Design of Automotive Body in White using Topology Optimization

Based on equivalent static loads method (ESL), a nonlinear dynamic topology optimization is carried out to optimize an automotive body in white (BIW) subjected to representative legislative crash loads, including frontal impact, side barrier impact, roof crush and rear impact. To meet the crashworthiness performances, two evaluation indexes are defined to convert the practical engineering problems into mathematic optimization problems. The strain energy is treated as the stiffness evaluation index of the BIW and the relative displacement is employed as the compliance index of the components and parts.

Crashworthiness Optimization of Hydraulic Excavator Cab Roof Rail and Safety Prediction: Finite Element Analysis and Experimental Validation

Off-road trucks, tractors and earth-moving machines are at high risk of accidents involving falling objects or rollovers. Therefore, these machines need proper protective structures to protect operators. This study investigates the crashworthiness optimization of a hydraulic excavator cab roof rail based on an improved bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) method considering two different load cases (a lateral quasi-static load and an impact load from the top of cab, respectively). In the crashworthiness optimization problem, a weighted summation of external works done by the two different load cases is treated as the objective function while the volume of design domain is treated as the constraint. A mutative weight scheme is proposed to stabilize the optimization and balance the two load cases. Finite element (FE) model is established and two prototypes are fabricated based on the optimal design.

Studies on Impact Performance of Gradient Lattice Structure Applied to Crash Box

The conventional crash box with thin-walled column conceals some limitations on pedestrian protection and lightweight. The metallic NPR metamaterials designed in this study are based on re-entrant lattice structures. Re-entrant structures are known to be one main class of axenic structures that display negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR), which can be manufactured by 3D printing technology. This kind of metamaterial has good designability and can be used as the filling structure of the crash box to improve the crashworthiness of the car. This paper starts from the relations between geometric parameters of the metamaterial. Considering the deformation characteristics of the crash box, the structure were designed into some gradient types. The mechanical properties of different gradient structures under the same impact conditions were compared to find the proper gradient structures. Based on the studies, the gradient lattice structure is applied to the automobile crash box.

Investigation on Contralateral Lower Extremity Injuries of Pedestrian and E-Bike Rider Based on C-NCAP

Lower extremities are easily injured in traffic accidents. During pedestrian-vehicle crashes, pedestrian lower extremities are subjected to the influence of combined shear force and bending force, which could bring about ligament tear and bone fracture. According to 2018 China New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP) pedestrian testing protocol, where the flexible pedestrian legform impactor (FLEX-PLI) is struck from the right lateral by vehicle, the injuries of the ipsilateral side leg are taken into account for assessing the performance of lower extremities. However, the contralateral leg injuries and deformation are neglected in the current testing protocol and the pedestrian walking gaits and the e-bike riding scenario have been little consideration. The purpose of this study is to investigate the injury characteristics of the contralateral lower extremities in pedestrian-vehicle and bicyclist-vehicle crashes.

A Comparison Study of Car-to-Pedestrian and Car-to-E-Bike Accidents: Data Source: The China In-Depth Accident Study (CIDAS)

The aim of the study was to investigate the difference between car-to-e-bikes and car-to-pedestrian accidents. The China In-depth Accident Study (CIDAS) database was searched from 2011 to 2013 for pedestrians and e-bikes struck by car, van and SUV fronts, which resulted in 104 pedestrian and 85 e-bike cases where information was sufficient for in-depth analysis. Reconstruction by PC-Crash was performed for all of the sampled cases. Pre-crash parameters were calculated by a MATLAB code. Focus was on prototypical accident scenarios and causes; speed as well as possible prevention countermeasures. It has been shown that traffic light violations, road priority violations, and unsure safety (these situations included misjudgments, unpreparedness, proximity to other road users, inappropriate speeds, etc.…) are the main causes in both the VRU groups. Distinctions were found for aspects of car collision speed, accident scenario, distribution of head contact points and so on.

Characteristics and Casualty Analysis of Two- Wheeler Accidents in China, Data Source: The China In-Depth Accident Study (CIDAS)

The two-wheeler is a vehicle that runs on two wheels, which is classified as motorcycle, electric-bicycle, and bicycle in this research. China has the largest number of two-wheelers and relevant accidents in the world. The two-wheeler riders have a high level of vulnerability, creating a significant necessity to better understand the characteristics according to the road-user group. The objective of this paper is to study the characteristics and analyze the causes of two-wheeler accidents in China using the CIDAS (China In-Depth Accident Study) Database. 2012 cases of two-wheeler accidents with riders injured or dead were collected from the CIDAS Database from 5 cities (Changchun, Beijing, Weihai, Ningbo and Foshan) in China over a period of 5 years (2011.07-2016.06).

Path Planning Method for Perpendicular Parking Based on Vehicle Kinematics Model Using MPC Optimization

In recent years, intelligent driving technology is being extensively studied. This paper proposes a path planning method for perpendicular parking based on vehicle kinematics model using MPC optimization, which aims to solve the perpendicular parking task. Firstly, in the case of any initial position and orientation of the vehicle, judging whether the vehicle can be parked at one step according to the location of the parking place and the width of the lane, and then calculating the starting position for parking, and use the Bezier curve to connect the initial position and the starting position. Secondly, reference parking path is calculated according to the collision constraints of the parking space. Finally, because the parking path based on the vehicle kinematics model is composed of circle arcs and straight lines, the curvature of the path is discontinuous. The reference parking path is optimized using Model Predictive Control (MPC).

Research on Low Illumination Image Enhancement Algorithm and Its Application in Driver Monitoring System

The driver monitoring system (DMS) plays an essential role in reducing traffic accidents caused by human errors due to driver distraction and fatigue. The vision-based DMS has been the most widely used because of its advantages of non-contact and high recognition accuracy. However, the traditional RGB camera-based DMS has poor recognition accuracy under complex lighting conditions, while the IR-based DMS has a high cost. In order to improve the recognition accuracy of conventional RGB camera-based DMS under complicated illumination conditions, this paper proposes a lightweight low-illumination image enhancement network inspired by the Retinex theory. The lightweight aspect of the network structure is realized by introducing a pixel-wise adjustment function. In addition, the optimization bottleneck problem is solved by introducing the shortcut mechanism.

Efficient Trajectory Planning for Tractor-Trailer Vehicles with an Incremental Optimization Solving Algorithm

A tractor-trailer vehicle (TTV) consists of an actuated tractor attached with several full trailers. Because of its nonlinear and noncompleted constraints, it is a challenging task to avoid collisions for path planner. In this paper, we propose an efficient method to plan an optimal trajectory for TTV to reach the destination without any collision. To deal with the complicated constraints, the trajectory planning problem is formulated as an optimal control problem uniformly, which can be solved by the interior point method. A novel incremental optimization solving algorithm (IOSA) is proposed to accelerate the optimization process, which makes the number of trailers and the size of obstacles increase asynchronously. Simulation experiments are carried out in two scenarios with static obstacles. Compared with other methods, the results show that the planning method with IOSA outperforms in the efficiency.

Concurrent Optimization of Ply Orientation and Thickness for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) Laminated Engine Hood

Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites have gained particular interests due to their high specific modulus, high strength, lightweight and resistance to environment. In the automotive industry, numerous studies have been ongoing to replace the metal components with CFRP for the purpose of weight saving. One of the significant benefits of CFRP laminates is the ability of tailoring fiber orientation and ply thickness to meet the acceptable level of structural performance with little waste of material capability. This study focused on the concurrent optimization of ply orientation and thickness for CFRP laminated engine hood, which was based on the gradient-based discrete material and thickness optimization (DMTO) method. Two manufactural constraints, namely contiguity and intermediate void constraints, were taken into account in the optimization problem to reduce the potential risk of cracking matrix of CFRP.

Paper showed 7 scenarios appeared frequency in China, 11, 12, 1 o’clock are main impact direction. High way and freeway are the main places, and the head, thorax and lower extremities were the main sites of injury.

Typical Pedestrian Accident Scenarios in China and Crash Severity Mitigation by Autonomous Emergency Braking Systems

In China, nearly 25% of traffic fatalities are pedestrians. To avoid those fatalities in the future, rapid development of countermeasures within both passive and active safety is under way, one of which is autonomous braking to avoid pedestrian crashes. The objective of this work was to describe typical accident scenarios for pedestrian accidents in China. In-depth accident analysis was conducted to support development of test procedures for assessing Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) systems. Beyond that, this study also aims for estimating the mitigation of potential crash severity by AEB systems. The China In-depth Accident Study (CIDAS) database was searched from 2011 to 2014 for pedestrian accidents. A total of 358 pedestrian accidents were collected from the on-site in-depth investigation in the first phase of CIDAS project (2011-2014).

Perception-Aware Path Planning for Autonomous Vehicles in Uncertain Environment

Recent researches in autonomous driving mainly consider the uncertainty in perception and prediction modules for safety enhancement. However, obstacles which block the field-of-view (FOV) of sensors could generate blind areas and leaves environmental uncertainty a remaining challenge for autonomous vehicles. Current solutions mainly rely on passive obstacles avoidance in path planning instead of active perception to deal with unexplored high-risky areas. In view of the problem, this paper introduces the concept of information entropy, which quantifies uncertain information in the blind area, into the motion planning module of autonomous vehicles. Based on model predictive control (MPC) scheme, the proposed algorithm can plan collision-free trajectories while actively explore unknown areas to minimize environmental uncertainty. Simulation results under various challenging scenarios demonstrate the improvement in safety and comfort with the proposed perception-aware planning scheme.

A Comprehensive Validation Method with Surface-Surface Comparison for Vehicle Safety Applications

Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) models have proven themselves to be efficient surrogates of real-world systems in automotive industries and academia. To successfully integrate the CAE models into analysis process, model validation is necessarily required to assess the models’ predictive capabilities regarding their intended usage. In the context of model validation, quantitative comparison which considers specific measurements in real-world systems and corresponding simulations serves as a principal step in the assessment process. For applications such as side impact analysis, surface deformation is frequently regarded as a critical factor to be measured for the validation of CAE models. However, recent approaches for such application are commonly based on graphical comparison, while researches on the quantitative metric for surface-surface comparison are rarely found.

In-Depth Analysis of Pedestrian-Vehicle Accidents Based on Chi-Square Test and Logistic Regression

Taking the pedestrian-vehicle accidents in the China in-Depth Accident Study (CIDAS) database as a sample case, 13 accidents morphological parameters were selected from three aspects: human, vehicle and environmental factors, and their depth analysis was carried out to obtain their distribution law through the card. The chi-square test and logistic regression method are used to analyze the correlation between the injury severity of pedestrians and other accidental morphological parameters in pedestrian-vehicle accidents. The results show that there is no significant correlation between gender/season and injury severity of pedestrians. The age of pedestrians and the collision speed is the strongest correlation with injury severity of pedestrians.

Research on Bottom Collision of Battery Pack Based on the First Force Point

The rapid advancement of new energy vehicle technology has led to the widespread placement of battery packs at the bottom of vehicles. However, there is a lack of corresponding regulations and standards to guide aspects related to vehicle bottom safety. This lack of guidance obscures the relative importance of various parameters impacting the structural safety of battery packs under dynamic impact conditions. Consequently, research on battery pack bottom collisions holds practical significance and offers valuable reference material. This study proposed a method based on the first collision point to examine the impact of bottom collisions on the mechanical safety performance of battery pack bottoms. A finite element model of the battery pack was established to investigate the effects of different impact types.
