Effect of Engine-Out Soot Emissions and the Frequency of Regeneration on Gasoline Particulate Filter Efficiency

Gasoline particulate filters (GPFs) are an important aftertreatment system that enables gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines to meet current emission standardsn note of GPFs may need to improonont accumulates on the GPF during engine operation. GPFs are often ‘pa during vehicle operation when the exhaust is sufficiently hot and it contains sufficient oxygen. This paper explores the effect that engine-out soot emissions and the frequency of GPF regeneration have on GPF filtration efficiency. Two GPF technologies were tested on two engine dynamometers as well as two production vehicles on a chassis dynamometer. The engines span a wide range of engine-out particle emissions (a range of almost one order of magnitude). The filtration efficiency of the GPFs were measured with a regulation-compliant particle number system (non-volatile particles > 23 nm), as well as with a particle counter with a lower cutoff of 2.5 nm, and with a differential mobility spectrometer.

Applicable Diesel Oxidation Catalyst for Multi-Diesel Exhaust System

The diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC) having high purification performance to the exhaust gas at low temperatures were investigated. In this paper two main technological improvements from conventional DOC are shown. First is forming Pt/Pd composite particles in order to suppress sintering of precious metal under high thermal aging condition. This generating Pt/Pd composite and the effect were exemplified by TEM-EDS and XRD analysis. Second is adjusting electric charge of Pt/Pd surface to reduce interaction between Pt/Pd and carbon monoxide (CO) by modifying the support material components. Adjusting electric charge of Pt/Pd surface by applying new support material could cancel CO poisoning at Pt/Pd surface. Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) studies suggested that improved support material is more suitable for CO oxidation at a low temperature based on the concept.

3D-CFD Simulation of DI-Diesel Combustion Applying a Progress Variable Approach Accounting for Detailed Chemistry

A chemical sub-model for realistic CFD simulations of Diesel engines is developed and demonstrated by application to some test cases. The model uses a newly developed progress variable approach to incorporate a realistic treatment of chemical reactions into the description of the reactive flow. The progress variable model is based on defining variables that represent the onset and temporal development of chemical reactions before and during self ignition, as well as the stage of the actual combustion. Fundamental aspects of the model, especially its physical motivation and finding a proper progress variable, are discussed, as well as issues of practical implementation. Sample calculations of Diesel-typical combustion scenarios are presented which are based on the progress-variable model, showing the capability of the model to realistically describe the ignition-and combustion phase.

Validation of Eulerian Spray Concept coupled with CFD Combustion Analysis

The main objective of engine 3D CFD simulation is nowadays the support for combustion design development. New combustion concepts (e.g. Low Temperature Combustion, HCCI, multiple injection strategies …) could be analyzed and predicted through detailed thermodynamical computation. To achieve this aim many simulation tools are needed: each of them has to be capable to reproduce the sensitivities of combustion design parameters through physically based models. The adopted approach consists of the coupling of different models for 3D-nozzle flow, orifice-resolved spray formation in Eulerian coordinates and combustion. The advantages of the method will be proofed on an operative DI-diesel truck engine case, run with different nozzle geometries.

Heavy Truck Frontal Crash Protection System Development

Heavy trucks are produced with a great variety of vehicle configurations, operate over a wide range of gross vehicle weight and sometimes function in extreme duty environments. Frontal crashes of heavy trucks can pose a threat to truck occupants when the vehicle strikes another large object such as bridge works, large natural features or another heavy-duty vehicle. Investigations of heavy truck frontal crashes indicate that the factors listed above all affect the outcome for the driver and the resulting damage to the truck Recently, a new chassis was introduced for on-highway heavy truck models that feature frontal airbag occupant protection. This introduction presented an opportunity to incorporate the knowledge gained from crash investigation into the process for developing the crash sensor's parameter settings.

Diesel Particulate Emissions of Passenger Cars - New Insights into Structural Changes During the Process of Exhaust Aftertreatment Using Diesel Oxidation Catalysts

Diesel particulate mass emissions and their corresponding size distributions have been investigated on a diesel passenger car at steady state conditions using standard filters and a cascade impactor. These tests have been carried out at two different engine operating conditions (2100 rpm, 2.7 and 13.3 kW, respectively) corresponding to low and high exhaust gas temperatures. Two diesel fuels differing in their sulfur content (150 ppm and 2500 ppm S) have been used for these investigations. The particulate size distribution after diesel oxidation catalyst was found to be affected by the sulfur content of the diesel fuel and by the exhaust gas temperature. Interpretations of these results on a mechanistic basis are given. The diesel particulate emission studies have been extended to dynamic vehicle tests.

New Low Cost and High Performance Catalyst-Single Layer Pd/Rh Catalyst Development

In order to meet recent and future stringent hydrocarbon emission regulations of passenger cars, the use of Pd-containing catalysts is of growing interest. This is especially true for Pd/Rh and Pt/Pd/Rh catalysts. To optimize the function of the individual precious metals, most high-performance catalysts have a double layer configuration. This double layer avoids undesired interactions between Pd and Rh after reacting with exhaust gas at a high temperature level. Of course, these double layer technologies lead to a more complex capacity utilization coating process during the manufacture of the catalyst. The present work summarizes the results of a research program targeting the development of a high-performance single layer Pd/Rh catalyst technology. The starting point was the functional improvement of Pd and Rh only catalysts then subsequently combining the best of these technologies.

Development of Oxidation and de-NOx Catalyst for High Temperature Exhaust Diesel Trucks

SOF and de-NOx catalysts are applied to heavy-duty diesel trucks which are regulated by European 13 mode or Japanese 13 mode cycles. Precious metal free catalysts can reduce SOF at low temperatures without increasing sulfates up to 670C. This catalyst shows little deterioration after 400 hours of high temperature engine aging. 32% PM and 47% SOF reduction is observed under 13 mode tests when the exhaust gas temperature exceeds 700C (ECE-13 mode). This precious metal free catalyst is suitable for diesel trucks, especially trucks with natural aspirating engine whose exhaust gas temperature is very high. De-NOx catalysts with a 300-500C NOx reduction temperature window are applied to the Japanese heavy-duty test cycle (Japan 13 mode). When secondary diesel fuel is added under modes 8 to 12, (secondary fuel addition only when catalyst inlet temperature is more than 300C), 19-25% NOx can be reduced with 2-4% fuel penalty.

Optimum Diesel Fuel for Future Clean Diesel Engines

Over the next decades to come, fossil fuel powered Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) will still constitute the major powertrains for land transport. Therefore, their impact on the global and local pollution and on the use of natural resources should be minimized. To this end, an extensive fundamental and practical study was performed to evaluate the potential benefits of simultaneously co-optimizing the system fuel-and-engine using diesel as an example. It will be clearly shown that the still unused co-optimizing of the system fuel-and-engine (including advanced exhaust after-treatment) as a single entity is a must for enabling cleaner future road transport by cleaner fuels since there are large, still unexploited potentials for improvements in road fuels which will provide major reductions in pollutant emissions both in vehicles already in the field and even more so in future dedicated vehicles.

HSDI Diesel Engine Optimisation for GTL Diesel Fuel

A Mercedes E320 CDI vehicle has been modified for more optimal operation on Gas-To-Liquids (GTL) diesel fuel, in order to demonstrate the extent of exhaust emission reductions which are enabled by the properties of this fuel. The engine hardware changes employed comprised the fitment of re-specified fuel injectors and the reduction of the compression ratio from 18:1 to 15:1, as well as a re-optimisation of the software calibration. The demonstration vehicle has achieved a NOx emission of less that 0.08 g/km in the NEDC test cycle, while all other regulated emissions still meet the Euro 4 limits, as well as those currently proposed for Euro 5. CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, were not degraded with the optimised engine. This was achieved whilst employing only cost-neutral engine modifications, and with the standard vehicle exhaust system (oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter) fitted.

The Influence of Rotating Wheels on Vehicle Aerodynamics - Numerical and Experimental Investigations

Investigations of the aerodynamic influence of rotating wheels on a simplified vehicle model as well as on a series production car are presented. For this research CFD simulations are used together with wind tunnel measurements like LDV and aerodynamic forces. Several wheel rim geometries are examined in stationary and in rotating condition. A good agreement could be achieved between CFD simulations and wind tunnel measurements. Based on the CFD analysis the major aerodynamic mechanisms at rotating wheels are characterized. The flow topology around the wheels in a wheel arch is revealed. It is shown, that the reduction of drag and lift caused by the wheel rotation on the isolated wheel and the wheel in the wheel arch are based on different effects of the airflow. Though the forces decrease at the front wheel due to the wheel rotation locally, the major change in drag and lift happens directly on the automotive body itself.

New Platinum/Palladium Based Catalyzed Filter Technologies for Future Passenger Car Applications

Catalyzed diesel particulate filter systems have now been successfully introduced and implemented in Europe. In the meantime, automotive manufacturers are working on the second generation of catalytic filters with the aim of reducing the overall system costs. In particular savings in precious metal costs are focussed by the use of highly-active catalysts which are stable at high temperatures. A possible approach here is the implementation of oxidation catalysts and catalytically coated filters based on platinum and palladium. In this context, the functio-nality of platinum/palladium-based, catalyzed filters was investigated by numerous measurements on a synthetic gas and an engine bench as well as by vehicle tests on a roller dynamometer. The HC/CO oxidation activity, the poisoning resistance towards sulfur and the desulfurization capability, the exothermic behaviour due to the conversion of subsequently injected hydrocarbons and the NO2 formation potential were examined in detail.

Real-Time Estimation of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Ratio Based on Cylinder Pressure Signals

External Exhaust Gas Recirculation, EGR, is a central issue in controlling emissions in up-to-date diesel engines. An empirical model has been developed that calculates the EGR ratio as a function of the engine speed, the engine load and special characteristics of the heat release rate. It was found that three combustion characteristics correlate well with the EGR ratio. These characteristics are the ignition delay, the premixed combustion ratio and the mixing-controlled combustion ratio. The calculation of these characteristics is based on parameter subsets, which were determined using an optimization routine. The model presented was developed based on these optimized characteristics.

62TE 6-Speed Transaxle for Chrysler Group

A new six-speed transaxle has been introduced by the Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler AG. Along with the six forward ratios in the normal upshift sequence, this transaxle features a seventh forward ratio used primarily in a specific downshift sequence. A significant technical challenge in this design was the control of so-called double-swap shifts, the exchange of two shift elements for two other shift elements. In the case at hand, one of the elements is a freewheel. A unique solution is discussed for successful control of double-swap shifts. The new design replaces a four-speed transaxle but makes use of a large percentage of parts and processes from the four-speed design. This approach enabled the new transaxle to reach production in three years from concept. The new transaxle, referred to as the 62TE, has substantially improved performance and passing maneuvers coupled with a new 4.0L high output engine for which the 62TE was developed.

Simulation Of NOx Storage and Reduction Catalyst: Model Development And Application

To fulfill future emission standards for diesel engines, combined after-treatment systems consisting of different catalyst technologies and diesel particulate filters (DPF) are necessary. For designing and optimizing the resulting systems of considerable complexity, effective simulation models of different catalyst and DPF technologies have been developed and integrated into a common simulation environment called ExACT (Exhaust After-treatment Components Toolbox). This publication focuses on a model for the NOx storage and reduction catalyst as a part of that simulation environment. A heterogeneous, spatially one-dimensional (1D), physically and chemically based mathematical model of the catalytic monolith has been developed. A global reaction kinetic approach has been chosen to describe reaction conversions on the washcoat. Reaction kinetic parameters have been evaluated from a series of laboratory experiments.

Numerical Simulation of Zeolite- and V-Based SCR Catalytic Converters

A numerical model describing the ammonia based SCR process of NOX on zeolite catalysts is presented. The model is able to simulate coated and extruded monoliths. The development of the reaction kinetics is based on a study which compares the activity of zeolite and vanadium based catalysts. This study was conducted in a microreactor loaded with washcoat powder and with crushed coated monoliths. A model for the SCR reaction kinetics on zeolite catalysts is presented. After the parameterization of the reaction mechanism the reaction kinetics were coupled with models for heat and mass transport. The model is validated with laboratory data and engine test bench measurement data over washcoated monolith catalysts. A numerical simulation study is presented, aiming to reveal the differences between zeolite and vanadium based SCR catalysts.

Dynamic Model for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH3 on Fe-Zeolite Catalysts

Future NOx-emission standards for diesel engines imply an after treatment system, e.g. in the form of an NH3-SCR system. For the technical realization a sound understanding of the catalytic processes is mandatory. To gain this knowledge a model of the SCR of NO with NH3 on Fe zeolite catalysts has been developed on the basis of a transient test cycle. The model is able to map the performance of the catalyst both under steady state and transient conditions. As practical examples the model is used to parameterize lookup tables and to compare different formats of lookup tables in terms of suitability for a urea dosage system.

NOx storage catalyst systems (or lean NOx trap, LNT) will most likely play an important role in meeting the future global Diesel emission standards. DaimlerChrysler introduced in 2006 the E 320 BLUETEC Diesel, which represents the first Clean Diesel car with NOx storage catalysts in North America [1]. The vast number of different applications result in a wide spectrum of different operating conditions for the LNT systems. Each of those different environments requires a fine-tuning of the catalyst's properties, particularly sulfur release properties and thermal durability. High average exhaust temperatures typical for a placement close to the engine require high thermal durability. Higher desulfation temperatures are acceptable in such a case since those temperatures are easier to achieve in such a configuration.

Emission Control Systems for Two Stroke Engines - A Challenge for Catalysis=

The exhaust emissions of two stroke vehicles like motorbikes and scooters contribute to the pollution in urban areas of developing countries in South East Asia and India to a major extent. But also in Japan and selected European countries exhaust gas limitations become effective from 10/1998 and 06/1999 for these vehicles. To control this emissions catalytic aftertreatment by Hot Tubes® and/or monolith type catalysts are applied. Due to the constant rich operation of the two-stroke engines, common design criteria for three-way catalysts fail. Extremely high exhaust gas hydrocarbon concentrations lead to high exotherms during oxidation which increases the exhaust gas temperature to a range between 800 and 900 °C. Furthermore the lack of oxygen limits the CO and HC oxidation under certain engine operation conditions. Therefore, water-gas shift and steam reforming reactions play an important part in catalytic aftertreatment of two-stroke exhausts.

The Integration of Cad/Cam/Cae Based on Multi-Model Technology in the Development of Cylinder Head

The integration of CAD/CAM/CAE in product development is the key to realize concurrent engineering. Generally, different systems are employed in product development department. These different systems create a lot of troubles such as difficult communication, misunderstanding and so on. A new approach to integrate CAD/CAM/CAE in one system based on CATIA for the end-to-end process in cylinder head development is presented. Multi-Model Technology (MMT) is used to create consistent and associated CAD models for the end-to-end process in cylinder head development. The concept and method to create and organize multi- models are discussed. A typically four-layer structure of MMT for mechanical products is defined. The multi-level structure of the cylinder head models based on MMT is provided. The CAD models of cylinder head created based on MMT can be used as the consistent model.
