3D-CFD Full Engine Simulation Application for Post-Oxidation Description

The introduction of real driving emissions cycles and increasingly restrictive emissions regulations force the automotive industry to develop new and more efficient solutions for emission reductions. In particular, the cold start and catalyst heating conditions are crucial for modern cars because is when most of the emissions are produced. One interesting strategy to reduce the time required for catalyst heating is post-oxidation. It consists in operating the engine with a rich in-cylinder mixture and completing the oxidation of fuel inside the exhaust manifold. The result is an increase in temperature and enthalpy of the gases in the exhaust, therefore heating the three-way-catalyst. The following investigation focuses on the implementation of post-oxidation by means of scavenging in a four-cylinder, turbocharged, direct injection spark ignition engine. The investigation is based on detailed measurements that are carried out at the test-bench.

A Phenomenological Unburned Hydrocarbon Model for Diesel Engines

Intensified emission regulations as well as consumption demands lead to an increasing significance of unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) emissions for diesel engines. On the one hand, the quantity of hydrocarbon (HC) raw emissions is important for emission predictions as well as for the exhaust after treatment. On the other hand, HC emissions are also important for predicting combustion efficiency and thus fuel consumption, since a part of unreleased chemical energy of the fuel is still bound in the HC molecules. Due to these reasons, a simulation model for predicting HC raw emissions was developed for diesel engines based on a phenomenological two-zone model. The HC model takes three main sources of HC emissions of diesel engines into account: Firstly, it contains a sub-model that describes the fuel dribble out of the injector after the end of injection. Secondly, HC emissions from cold peripheral zones near cylinder walls are determined in another sub-model.

Driver Classification of Shifting Strategies Using Machine Learning Algorithms

The adequate dimensioning of drive train components such as gearbox, clutch and driveshaft presents a major technical task. The one of manual transmissions represents a special significance due to the customer’s ability of inducing high force, torque and thermic energy into the powertrain through direct mechanical interconnection of gearstick, clutch pedal and gearbox. Out of this, the question about how to capture behavior and strain of the components during real operation, as well as their objective evaluation evolves. Furthermore, the gained insights must be considered for designing and development. As a basis for the examination, measuring data from imposing driving tests are adduced. Therefore, a trial study has been conducted, using a representative circular course in the metropolitan area of Stuttgart, showing the average German car traffic. The more than 40 chosen drivers constitute the average driver in Germany with respect to age, gender and annual mileage.

Thermal Behavior of an Electronics Compartment with Respect to Real Driving Conditions

The reliability of electronic components is of increasing importance for further progress towards automated driving. Thermal aging processes such as electromigration is one factor that can negatively affect the reliability of electronics. The resulting failures depend on the thermal load of the components within the vehicle lifetime - called temperature collective - which is described by the temperature frequency distribution of the components. At present, endurance testing data are used to examine the temperature collective for electronic components in the late development stage. The use of numerical simulation tools within Vehicle Thermal Management (VTM) enables lifetime thermal prediction in the early development stage, but also represents challenges for the current VTM processes [1, 2]. Due to the changing focus from the underhood to numerous electronic compartments in vehicles, the number of simulation models has steadily increased.

Subjective Perception and Evaluation of Driving Dynamics in the Virtual Test Drive

In addition to the analysis of human driving behavior or the development of new advanced driver assistance systems, the high simulation quality of today’s driving simulators enables investigations of selected topics pertaining to driving dynamics. With high reproducibility and fast generation of vehicle variants the subjective evaluation process leads to a better system understanding in the early development stages. The transfer of the original on-road test run to the virtual reality of the driving simulator includes the full flexibility of the vehicle model, the maneuver and the test track, which allows new possibilities of investigation. With the opportunity of a realistic whole-vehicle simulation provided by the Stuttgart Driving Simulator new analysis of the human’s thresholds of perception are carried out.

Parametric Study of Reduced Span Side Tapering on a Simplified Model with Wheels

Many modern vehicles have blunt rear end geometries for design aesthetics and practicality; however, such vehicles are potentially high drag. The application of tapering; typically applied to an entire edge of the base of the geometry is widely reported as a means of reducing drag, but in many cases, this is not practical on real vehicles. In this study side tapers are applied to only part of the side edge of a simplified automotive geometry, to show the effects of practical implementations of tapers. The paper reports on a parametric study undertaken in Loughborough University’s Large Wind Tunnel with the ¼ scale Windsor model equipped with wheels. The aerodynamic effect of implementing partial side edge tapers is assessed from a full height taper to a 25% taper in both an upper and lower body configuration. These were investigated using force and moment coefficients, pressure measurements and planar particle image velocimetry (PIV).

Holistic Thermal Energy Modelling for Full Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs)

Full hybrid electric vehicles are usually defined by their capability to drive in a fully electric mode, offering the advantage that they do not produce any emissions at the point of use. This is particularly important in built up areas, where localized emissions in the form of NOx and particulate matter may worsen health issues such as respiratory disease. However, high degrees of electrification also mean that waste heat from the internal combustion engine is often not available for heating the cabin and for maintaining the temperature of the powertrain and emissions control system. If not managed properly, this can result in increased fuel consumption, exhaust emissions, and reduced electric-only range at moderately high or low ambient temperatures negating many of the benefits of the electrification. This paper describes the development of a holistic, modular vehicle model designed for development of an integrated thermal energy management strategy.

Consumption Optimization in Battery Electric Vehicles by Autonomous Cruise Control using Predictive Route Data and a Radar System

This paper presents an autonomous cruise control for battery electric vehicles. The presented approach is based on the usage of predictive route data which is extracted out of a digital map and a wide range radar system in order to capture vehicles in front. By using the predictive route data and the information of the radar system, the autonomous cruise control can control the vehicle's speed over a wide range of driving situations without any driver interaction. The main aim of the presented autonomous cruise control is to optimize the battery electric vehicle's energy consumption. The main idea is to use predictive route data in order to calculate a consumption optimal vehicle speed trajectory by means of online optimization. The benefits of the autonomous cruise control are shown by means of real test drives and measured data evaluation.

Electrical power requirements for vehicles continue to increase. Future vehicle applications require the development of reliable and robust power supply strategies that operate over various ambient temperatures and driving conditions. Insufficient charge balance is one of the major concerns for conventional lead-acid battery systems when operated with limited charging times during short journeys or extreme climate conditions. For vehicle power supply analysis, a detailed understanding of the operational characteristics of the major components and how they interact as a part of the electric power system, including environmental and road conditions, is essential if the analysis is to aid system optimization. This paper presents a model based technique that enhances the process of vehicle electrical power system design. Vehicle system optimization using virtual prototypes has become critically important as more electrical features are added to future vehicles.

Development support for the design of distributed control systems in a road vehicle

The development process of electronic control units (ECU) is increasingly supported by different tools. The target-specific code-generation for single micro-controllers becomes a standard technology. Thus a continuous tool support during the whole development cycle is possible. This extends from the specification of the functionality to the implementation of the software on the controller. The next generation of tool support is not only focused on single micro-controllers it also supports the design of systems consisting of different controllers connected via various communication entities. Thus the goal of the tool support is the automatic code-generation for such distributed embedded real-time systems including support of different communication buses (e.g., Controller Area Network CAN, Time Triggered Protocol TTP) and different processor targets.

Exploring the Value of Open Source in SI Engine Control

The notion of open source systems has been well established in systems software and typified by the development of the Linux operating system. An open source community is a community of interest that makes use of software tools in research and development. Their ongoing development is part of the free flow of ideas on which the community. The motivation for the work reported in this paper is to provide the research community in engine controls with a ready access to a complete engine management solution and the component parts. The work described in this paper extends open source principles to engine control with a portable spark ignition (SI) control strategy assembled using Simulink. The underlying low level drivers are written in C and designed for portability. A calibration tool is written in C and works over a controller area network (CAN) link to the engine control unit (ECU). The ECU hardware is based on the Infineon Tricore microcontroller.

In-Cylinder Optical Study on Combustion of DMF and DMF Fuel Blends

The bio-fuel, 2,5 - dimethylfuran (DMF) is currently regarded as a potential alternative fuel to gasoline due to the development of new production technology. However, little is known about the flame behavior in an optical engine. In this paper, high speed imaging (with intensifier) was used during the combustion of DMF and its blends with gasoline and ethanol (D50, D85, E50D50 and E85D15) in an SI optical engine. The flame images from the combustion of each fuel were analyzed at two engine loads: 3bar and 4bar IMEP. For DMF, D50 and E50D50, two modes were compared: DI and PFI. The average flame shapes (in 2D) and the average flame speeds were calculated and combined with mass fraction burned (MFB) data. The results show that when using DMF, the rate of flame growth development and flame speed is higher than when using gasoline. The differences in flame speed between DMF and gasoline is about 10% to 14% at low IMEP.

Accurate Model Based Hardware-in-the-Loop Test for a Windscreen Wiper System

Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations have long been used to test electronic control units (ECUs) and software in car manufacturers. It provides an effective platform to the rapid development process of the ECU control algorithms and accommodates the added complexity of the plant under control. Accurate Model based HIL simulation (AMHIL) is considered as a most efficient and cost effective way for exploration of new designs and development of new products, particularly in calibration and parameterization of vehicle stability controllers. The work presented in the paper is to develop a mathematical model of a windscreen wiper system for the purpose of conducting HIL vehicle test and eventually to replace the real component with the model for cost cutting and improved test efficiency. The model is developed based on the electro-mechanical engineering principles.

Design and Comparative Study of Yaw Rate Control Systems with Various Actuators

The vehicle dynamics control systems are traditionally based upon utilizing wheel brakes as actuators. However, there has been recently strong interest in the automotive industry for introduction of other vehicle dynamics actuators, in order to improve the overall vehicle stability, responsiveness, and agility features. This paper considers various actuators such as active rear and central differentials and active front and rear steering, and proposes design of related yaw rate control systems. Different control subsystems such as reference model, feedback and feedforward control, allocation algorithm, and time-varying controller limit are discussed. The designed control systems are verified and compared by computer simulation for double lane change and slalom maneuvers.

Robustness Modelling of Complex Systems - Application to the Initialisation of a Hybrid Electric Vehicle Propulsion System

Robustness is particularly important in complex systems of systems due to emergent behaviour. This paper presents two novel, techniques developed as part of a framework for design for robustness of complex automotive electronic systems, but in principle could be applied to a broad range of distributed electronic systems. The overall framework is described to give the context of use for the techniques. The first technique is a “robustness case” which is a structured argument for the robustness of a system analogous to a safety case. The second is a model based approach to early robustness verification of complex systems. The approaches are demonstrated by their application to the system initialisation of the propulsion control system of a hybrid electric vehicle. The hybrid system initialisation process is discussed in terms of the key objectives and the technical implementation, illustrating the level of complexity underlying a simple high level requirement.

A Pragmatic Model-Based Product Engineering Process

Complexity of electronics and embedded software systems in automobiles has been increasing over the years. This necessitates the need for an effective and exhaustive development and validation process in order to deliver fault free vehicles at reduced time to market. Model-based Product Engineering (MBPE) is a new process for development and validation of embedded control software. The process is generic and defines the engineering activities to plan and assess the progress and quality of the software developed for automotive applications. The MBPE process is comprised of six levels (one design level and five verification and validation levels) ranging from the vehicle requirements phase to the start of production. The process describes the work products to be delivered during the course of product development and also aligns the delivery plan to overall vehicle development milestones.

Design of an Additive Manufactured Natural Gas Engine with Thermally Conditioned Active Prechamber

In order to decarbonize and lower the overall emissions of the transport sector, immediate and cost-effective powertrain solutions are needed. Natural gas offers the advantage of a direct reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions due to its better Carbon to Hydrogen ratio (C/H) compared to common fossil fuels, e.g. gasoline or diesel. Moreover, an optimized engine design suiting the advantages of natural gas in knock resistance and lean mixtures keeping in mind the challenges of power density, efficiency and cold start manoeuvres. In the public funded project MethMag (Methane lean combustion engine) a gasoline fired three-cylinder-engine is redesigned based on this change of requirements and benchmarked against the previous gasoline engine.

Coordinated EV Charging Based on Charging Profile Clustering and Rule-Based Energy Management

In this work, a novel approach is introduced comprising a combination of unsupervised machine learning (ML) scheme and charging energy management of electric vehicles (EV). The main goal of this implementation is to reduce the load peak of charging EV’s, which are regular users of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) of a certain building and, at the same time, to meet their electric and behavioral demands. The unsupervised ML considers certain features within the charging profiles in addition to the behavioral characteristics of the EV based on its intended use. Moreover, these features are extracted from large sets of history measurement data of the EVSE, which are stored in the data bank. The ML categorizes the EVs within certain clusters having defined specifications.

Data-Driven Modeling: An AI Toolchain for the Powertrain Development Process

Predictive physical modeling is an established method used in the development process for automotive components and systems. While accurate predictions can be issued after tuning model parameters, long computation times are expected depending on the complexity of the model. As requirements for components and systems continuously increase, new optimization approaches are constantly being applied to solve multidimensional objectives and resulting conflicts optimally. Some of those approaches are deemed not feasible, as the computational times for required single predictions using conventional simulation models are too high. To address this issue it is proposed to use data-driven model such as neural networks. Previous efforts have failed due to sparse data sets and resulting poor predictive ability. This paper introduces an AI Toolchain used for data-driven modeling of combustion engine components. Two methods for generating scalable and fully variable datasets will be shown.

Evaluation of Optimal State of Charge Planning Using MPC

Hybrid technologies enable the reduction of noxious tailpipe emissions and conformance with ever-decreasing allowable homologation limits. The complexity of the hybrid powertrain technology leads to an energy management problem with multiple energy sinks and sources comprising the system resulting in a high-dimensional time dependent problem for which many solutions have been proposed. Methods that rely on accurate predictions of potential vehicle operations are demonstrably more optimal when compared to rule-based methodology [1]. In this paper, a previously proposed energy management strategy based on an offline optimization using dynamic programming is investigated. This is then coupled with an online model predictive control strategy to follow the predetermined optimal battery state of charge trajectory prescribed by the dynamic program.
