Research on Vibration Isolation of Semi-Active Controlled Hydraulic Engine Mount with Air Spring

Aiming at the abnormal vibration of driver seat of a passenger car in idle condition, vibration acceleration of engine, frame and seat rail was tested to identify vibration sources. Order tracking and spectrogram analysis indicated that the second order self-excitation of engine was the main cause. To solve the problem, semi-active controlled hydraulic engine mount with air spring of which characteristics could shift between a high dynamic stiffness and a low one was applied. Then the structure and principle of the mount with variable characteristics was introduced and control mode was analyzed. Dynamic characteristics were obtained by bench test. With sample mount applied, vibration of seat rail was tested again in multiple vehicle and engine working conditions. Dates showed that abnormal vibration in idle condition was extremely reduced and the mount could also meet the requirement of engine to dynamic stiffness in driving conditions.

Model-Based Fault Diagnosis of Selective Catalytic Reduction Systems for Diesel Engines

In this paper, a model-based diagnostic system was developed to detect and isolate the dosing fault and the outlet NOx sensor fault for the SCR system. The dosing fault is treated as an actuator additive fault, while the outlet NOx sensor drift and/or offset fault is treated as a sensor additive fault. First, a 0-D SCR model was developed to facilitate the model-based approach. A parity equation residual generator was designed based on the linearized SCR model and the fault transfer function matrix. The diagnostic algorithm is then implemented in the Matlab/Simulink environment for validation. A high fidelity nonlinear 1-D SCR model is used to generate system outputs and to simulate the plant. The simulation results show that the model-based fault diagnosis system succeeds in detecting and isolating the outlet NOx sensor and dosing faults with good sensitivity and robustness

Optimization Matching of Powertrain System for Self-Dumping Truck Based on Grey Relational Analysis

In this paper, the performance simulation model of a domestic self-dumping truck was established using AVL-Cruise software. Then its accuracy was checked by the power performance and fuel economy tests which were conducted on the proving ground. The power performance of the self-dumping truck was evaluated through standing start acceleration time from 0 to 70km/h, overtaking acceleration time from 60 to 70km/h, maximum speed and maximum gradeability, while the composite fuel consumption per hundred kilometers was taken as an evaluation index of fuel economy. A L9 orthogonal array was applied to investigate the effect of three matching factors including engine, transmission and final drive, which were considered at three levels, on the power performance and fuel economy of the self-dumping truck. Furthermore, the grey relational grade was proposed to assess the multiple performance responses according to the grey relational analysis.

Parameter Matching of Planetary Gearset Characteristic Parameter of Power-Spilt Hybrid Vehicle

To quickly and efficiently match the planetary gearset characteristic parameter of power-spilt hybrid vehicles so that their oil-saving potential can be maximized, this study proposes a parameter matching method that comprehensively considers energy management strategy and driving cycle based on an analysis of vehicle instantaneous efficiency. The method is used to match the planetary characteristic parameter of a power-split hybrid light truck. The relevant conclusions are compared with the influence of various planetary characteristic parameters on fuel consumption obtained through simulation under typical operating conditions. The simulation results show that the influence laws of the various planetary characteristic parameters on vehicle average efficiency are similar to those on fuel consumption. The proposed parameter-matching method based on vehicle efficiency analysis can effectively match the planetary characteristic parameter for power-split hybrid powertrains.

Temperature Compensation Control Strategy of Assist Mode for Hydraulic Hub-Motor Drive Vehicle

Based on the traditional heavy commercial vehicle, hydraulic hub-motor drive vehicle (HHMDV) is equipped with a hydraulic hub-motor auxiliary drive system, which makes the vehicle change from the rear-wheel drive to the four-wheel drive to improve the traction performance on low-adhesion road. In the typical operating mode of the vehicle, the leakage of the hydraulic system increases because of the oil temperature rising, this makes the control precision of the hydraulic system drop. Therefore, a temperature compensation control strategy for the assist mode is proposed in this paper. According to the principle of flow continuity, considering the loss of the system and the expected wheel speed, the control strategy of multifactor target pump displacement based on temperature compensation is derived. The control strategy is verified by the co-simulation platform of MATLAB/Simulink and AMESim.

Parametric Investigation of Two-Stage Pilot Diesel Injection on the Combustion and Emissions of a Pilot Diesel Compression Ignition Natural Gas Engine at Low Load

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of two-stage pilot injection parameters on the combustion and emissions of pilot diesel compression ignition natural gas (CING) engine at low load. Experiments were performed using a diesel/natural gas dual-fuel engine, which was modified from a six-cylinder diesel engine. The effect of injection timing and injection pressure of two-stage pilot diesel were analyzed in order to reduce both the fuel consumption and total hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions under low load conditions. The results indicate that, because injection timing can determine the degree of pilot diesel stratification, in-cylinder thermodynamic state, and the available mixing time prior to the combustion, the combustion process can be controlled and optimized through adjusting injection timing.

Cyber-Physical System Based Optimization Framework for Intelligent Powertrain Control

The interactions between automatic controls, physics, and driver is an important step towards highly automated driving. This study investigates the dynamical interactions between human-selected driving modes, vehicle controller and physical plant parameters, to determine how to optimally adapt powertrain control to different human-like driving requirements. A cyber-physical system (CPS) based framework is proposed for co-design optimization of the physical plant parameters and controller variables for an electric powertrain, in view of vehicle’s dynamic performance, ride comfort, and energy efficiency under different driving modes. System structure, performance requirements and constraints, optimization goals and methodology are investigated. Intelligent powertrain control algorithms are synthesized for three driving modes, namely sport, eco, and normal modes, with appropriate protocol selections. The performance exploration methodology is presented.

Design and Power-Assisted Braking Control of a Novel Electromechanical Brake Booster

As a novel assist actuator of brake system, the electromechanical brake (EMB) booster has played a significant role in the battery electric vehicles and automatic driving vehicles. It has advantages of independent to vacuum source, active braking, and tuning pedal feeling compared with conventional vacuum brake booster. In this article, a novel EMB booster system is proposed, which is consisted of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), a two-stage reduction by gears and ball screw, a servo body, and a reaction disk. Together with the hydraulic control unit, it has two working modes: active braking for automatic drive and passive braking for driver intervention. The structure and work principle of the electric brake booster system is first introduced. The precise control from pedal force to hydraulic pressure is the key for such a power-assisted brake actuator. We translate the control problem of force feedback control to position tracking control.

Design of an Advanced Traction Controller for an Electric Vehicle Equipped with Four Direct Driven In-Wheel Motors

The vision for the future automotive chassis is to interconnect the lateral, longitudinal, and vertical dynamics by separately controlling driving, braking, steering, and damping of each individual wheel. A major advantage of all wheel drive electric vehicles with four in-wheel motors is the possibility to control the torque and speed at each wheel independently. This paper proposes a traction controller for such a vehicle. It estimates the road's adhesion potential at each wheel and adjusts each motor voltage, such that the longitudinal slip is kept in an optimal range. For development and validation, a full vehicle model is designed in ADAMS/View software, in co-simulation with motor and control elements, modeled in MATLAB/Simulink.

Cu-Zeolite SCR Catalyst Thermal Deactivation Studied with FTIR Spatial Resolution

The performance of a commercial Cu-zeolite SCR catalyst after differing degrees of hydrothermal aging (aged for 72 hours at 500, 700 and 800°C with 10% moisture balanced with air) was studied by spatially resolving different key reactions using gas-phase FTIR measurements. Gases were sampled along a channel at different positions and analyzed using FTIR, which overcomes the interference of water and nitrogen on ammonia concentration detection encountered in standard mass spectrometer-based spatial resolution measurements. The NO:NO₂ concentration ratio was changed so that the standard (NO:NO₂ = 1:0), fast (NO:NO₂ = 1:1) and NO₂ (NO:NO₂ = 0:1) SCR reactions could be investigated as a function of the catalyst's hydrothermal aging extent. In addition, the effects of hydrothermal aging on the activity of NH₃ and NO oxidation were also investigated. Hydrothermal aging had little effect on NO oxidation activity.

Parametric Importance Analysis and Design Optimization of a Torque Converter Model Using Sensitivity Information

Torque converters are used as coupling devices in automobile powertrains involving automatic transmissions. Efficient modeling of torque converters capturing various modes of operation is important for powertrain design and simulation, (Hroval and Tobler 1, Ishihara and Emori 2) optimization and control applications. Models of torque converters are available in various commercial simulation packages, Hadi et. al. 3. The information about the effect of model parameters on torque converter performance is valuable for any design operation. In this paper, a symbolic sensitivity analysis of a torque converter model will be presented. Direct differentiation (Serban and Freeman 4) is used to generate the sensitivity equations which results in equations in symbolic form. By solving the sensitivity equations, the effect of a perturbation of the model parameters on the behavior of the system is determined.

Development and Validation of New Control Algorithm for Parallel Hybrid Electric Transit Bus

The new control algorithm for parallel hybrid electric vehicle is presented systematically, in which engine operation points are limited within higher efficient area by the control algorithm and the state of charge (SOC) is limited in a range in order to enhance the batteries' charging and discharging efficiency. In order to determine the ideal operating point of the vehicle's engine, the control strategy uses a lookup table to determine the torque output of the engine. The off-line simulation model of parallel HEV power train is developed which includes the control system and controlled objective (such as engine, electric motor, battery pack and so on). The results show that the control algorithm can effectively limite engine and battery operation points and much more fuel economy can be achieved than that of conventional one.

Research on Yaw Stability Control of Unmanned Vehicle Based on Integrated Electromechanical Brake Booster

The Electromechanical Brake Booster system (EMBB) integrates active braking and energy recovery and becomes a novel brake-by-wire solution that substitutes the vacuum booster. While the intelligent unmanned vehicle is in unstable state, the EMBB can improve the vehicle yaw stability more quickly and safely. In this paper, a new type of integrated EMBB has been designed, which mainly includes two parts: servo motor unit and hydraulic control unit. Aiming at the dynamic instability problem of intelligent unmanned vehicle, a three-layer vehicle yaw stability control structure including decision layer, distribution layer and execution layer is proposed based on integrated EMBB. Firstly, the decision layer calculates the ideal yaw rate and the side slip angle of the vehicle with the classic 2DOF vehicle dynamics model. The boundary of the stable region is determined by the phase plane method and the additional yaw moment is determined by the feedback PI control algorithm.

Research on Compensation Redundancy Control for Basic Force Boosting Failure of Electro-Booster Brake System

As a new brake-by-wire solution, the electro-booster (Ebooster) brake system can work with the electronic stability program (ESP) equipped in the real vehicle to realize various excellent functions such as basic force boosting (BFB), active braking and energy recovery, which is promoting the development of smart vehicles. Among them, the BFB is the function of Ebooster's servo force to assist the driver's brake pedal force establishing high-intensity braking pressure. After the BFB function failure of the Ebooster, it was not possible to provide sufficient brake pressure for the driver's normal braking, and eventually led to traffic accidents. In this paper, a compensation redundancy control strategy based on ESP is proposed for the BFB failure of the self-designed Ebooster.

Material Model Selection for Crankshaft Deep Rolling Process Numerical Simulation

Residual stress prediction arising from manufacturing processes provides paramount information for the fatigue performance assessment of components subjected to cyclic loading. The determination of the material model to be applied in the numerical model should be taken carefully. This study focuses on the estimation of residual stresses generated after deep rolling of cast iron crankshafts. The researched literature on the field employs the available commercial material codes without closer consideration on their reverse loading capacities. To mitigate this gap, a single element model was used to compare potential material models with tensile-compression experiments. The best fit model was then applied to a previously developed crankshaft deep rolling numerical model. In order to confront the simulation outcomes, residual stresses were measured in two directions on real crankshaft specimens that passed through the same modeled deep rolling process.

Full-Vehicle Model Development for Prediction of Fuel Consumption

A predictive model of a specific vehicle was modeled in the system-level physical modeling tool, MapleSim, for performance and fuel consumption prediction of a full vehicle powertrain, driving a multi-body chassis model with tire models. The project also includes investigation into overall fuel efficiency and effect on vehicle handling for different drive cycles. The goals of this project were to investigate: 1) the relationships between the forces at tire/road interfaces during various drive cycles and the fuel efficiency of a vehicle, and 2) the interaction between the powertrain and the chassis of the vehicle. To accomplish these goals, a complete vehicle model was created in the lumped-parameter physical modeling tool, MapleSim. A great deal of effort has gone into using real parameters and to assure that some mathematical rigour has been employed in its development.

Temperature Compensation Control Strategy of Creep Mode for Hydraulic Hub-Motor Drive Vehicle

Based on traditional heavy commercial vehicles, a hydraulic hub-motor drive vehicle (HHMDV) is equipped with a set of hydraulic hub-motor auxiliary system (HHMAS) to improve the traction performance and adaptability under complex conditions. In the case of low-speed operation or mechanical transmission failure, the creep mode (CM) can be used to drive the vehicle. Aiming at a common hydraulic system problem that flow loss increases due to temperature variation, a temperature compensation control strategy of the CM is proposed in this paper. By analyzing the speed regulation characteristics of the closed loop of the system in the CM, combined with the efficiency of the hydraulic variable pump (HP) and the hydraulic quantitative motor (HM), and aiming at adjusting the engine work in the optimal curve of the engine, the temperature compensation factor is introduced to control the HP displacement with hydraulic stepless speed regulation.

The conversion design strategy, and emissions and performance results for a dedicated propane, vapour injected, 1995 Dodge Dakota truck are reported. Data is obtained from the University of Waterloo entry in the 1997 Propane Vehicle Challenge. A key feature of the design strategy is its focus on testing and emissions while preserving low engine speed power for drivability. Major changes to the Dakota truck included the following: installation of a custom shaped fuel tank, inclusion of a fuel temperature control module, addition of a vaporizer and a fuel delivery metering unit, installation of a custom vapour distribution manifold, addition of an equivalence ratio electronic controller, inclusion of a wide range oxygen sensor, addition of an exhaust gas recirculation cooler and installation of thermal insulation on the exhaust system. A competition provided natural gas catalyst was used.

Implementation and Optimization of a Fuel Cell Hybrid Powertrain

A fuel cell hybrid powertrain design is implemented and optimized by the University of Waterloo Alternative Fuels Team for the ChallengeX competition. A comprehensive set of bench-top and in-vehicle validation results are used to generate accurate fuel cell vehicle models for SIL/HIL control strategy testing and tuning. The vehicle is brought to a “99% buy-off” level of production readiness, and a detailed crashworthiness analysis is performed. The vehicle performance is compared to Vehicle Technical Specifications (VTS).
