Pedestrian Orientation Estimation Using CNN and Depth Camera

This work presents a method for estimating human body orientation using a combination of convolutional neural network (CNN) and stereo camera in real time. The approach uses the CNN model to predict certain human body keypoints then transforms these points into a 3D space using the stereo vision system to estimate the body orientations. The CNN module is trained to estimate the shoulders, the neck and the nose positions, detecting of three points is required to confirm human detection and provided enough data to translate the points into 3D space.

Measurement and Evaluation of Vacuum Suction Cups Using Digital Image Correlation

As vacuum suction cups are widely used in stamping plants, it becomes urgent and important to understand their performance and failure mode. Vacuum suction cups are employed to lift, move, and place sheet metal instead of human hands. Occasionally the vacuum cups would fail and drop parts, even it would cause expensive delays in the production line. In this research, several types of vacuum cups have been studies and compared experimentally. A new tensile device and test method was developed to measure the pulling force and deformation of vacuum cups. The digital image correlation technique has been adopted to capture and analyze the contour, deformation and strain of the cups under different working conditions. The experimental results revealed that the relevant influential parameters include cup type, pulling force angles, vacuum levels, sheet metal curvatures, etc.

Design under Uncertainty using a Combination of Evidence Theory and a Bayesian Approach

Early in the engineering design cycle, it is difficult to quantify product reliability due to insufficient data or information to model uncertainties. Probability theory can not be therefore, used. Design decisions are usually based on fuzzy information which is imprecise and incomplete. Various design methods such as Possibility-Based Design Optimization (PBDO) and Evidence-Based Design Optimization (EBDO) have been developed to systematically treat design with non-probabilistic uncertainties. In practical engineering applications, information regarding the uncertain variables and parameters may exist in the form of sample points, and uncertainties with sufficient and insufficient information may exist simultaneously. Most of the existing optimal design methods under uncertainty can not handle this form of incomplete information. They have to either discard some valuable information or postulate the existence of additional information.

New Metrics to Assess Reliability and Functionality of Repairable Systems

The classical definition of reliability may not be readily applicable for repairable systems. Commonly used concepts such as the Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) and availability can be misleading because they only report limited information about the system functionality. In this paper, we discuss a set of metrics that can help with the design of repairable systems. Based on a set of desirable properties for these metrics, we select a minimal set of metrics (MSOM) which provides the most information about a system, with the smallest number of metrics. The metric of Minimum Failure Free Period (MFFP) with a given probability generalizes MTBF because the latter is simply the MFFP with a 0.5 probability. It also generalizes availability because coupled with repair times it provides a clearer picture of the length of the expected uninterrupted service. Two forms of MFFP are used: transient and steady state.

Technological advancement in the automotive industry necessities a closer focus on the functional safety for higher automated driving levels. The automotive industry is transforming from conventional driving technology, where the driver or the human is a part of the control loop, to fully autonomous development and self-driving mode. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) defines the level 4 of autonomy: “Automated driving feature will not require the driver to take over driving control.” Thus, more and more safety related electronic control units (ECUs) are deployed in the control module to support the vehicle. As a result, more complexity of system architecture, software, and hardware are interacting and interfacing in the control system, which increases the risk of both systematic and random hardware failures.

EV Penetration Impacts on Environmental Emissions and Operational Costs of Power Distribution Systems

This research assesses the integration of different levels of electric vehicles (EVs) in the distribution system and observes its impacts on environmental emissions and power system operational costs. EVs can contribute to reducing the environmental emission from two different aspects. First, by replacing the traditional combustion engine cars with EVs for providing clean and environment friendly transportation and second, by integrating EVs in the distribution system through the V2G program, by providing power to the utility during peak hours and reducing the emission created by hydrocarbon dependent generators. The PG&E 69-bus distribution system (DS) is used to simulate the integration of EVs and to perform energy management to assess the operational costs and emissions. The uncertainty of driving patterns of EVs are considered in this research to get more accurate results.

Digital Image Correlation Based Real-Time Fatigue Feedback System Study

Fatigue testing is a specialized form of mechanical testing that is performed by applying cyclic loading to a coupon or structure. Two common forms of fatigue testing are load controlled high cycle and strain controlled low cycle fatigue. Some strain measurement device, such as extensometers, strain gage, that are often used as a feedback sensor on strain controlled fatigue test. However, in applications where strain controlled fatigue testing could face some extreme conditions as well as high temperature and unusual sizing which requires the strain measurement to be nondestructive and full field. While digital image correlation (DIC), an advanced optical measurement technique, has a decent solution on challenges of fatigue testing measurement. The problem is how to turn DIC from a measurement system to a feedback controller unit. Due to the developments in camera and computation techniques, the sequential process can now be performed as a parallel process.

Improved Wear Resistance of Austempered Gray Cast Iron Using Shot-Peening Treatment

In this research, ball-on-plate reciprocating sliding wear tests were utilized on austempered and quench-tempered gray cast iron samples with and without shot-peening treatment. The wear volume loss of the gray cast iron samples with different heat treatment designs was compared under equivalent hardness. The phase transformation in the matrix was studied using metallurgical evaluation and hardness measurement. It was found that thin needle-like ferrite became coarse gradually with increasing austempering temperature and was converted into feather-like shape when using the austempering temperatures of 399°C (750°F). The residual stress on the surface and sub-surface before and after shot-peening treatment was analyzed using x-ray diffraction. Compressive residual stress was produced after shot-peening treatment and showed an increasing trend with austempering temperature.

Driver Visual Focus of Attention Estimation in Autonomous Vehicles

An existing challenge in current state-of-the-art autonomous vehicles is the process of safely transferring control from autonomous driving mode to manual mode because the driver may be distracted with secondary tasks. Such distractions may impair a driver’s situational awareness of the driving environment which will lead to fatal outcomes during a handover. Current state-of-the-art vehicles notify a user of an imminent handover via auditory, visual, and physical alerts but are unable to improve a driver’s situational awareness before a handover is executed. The overall goal of our research team is to address the challenge of providing a driver with relevant information to regain situational awareness of the driving task. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to estimating a driver’s visual focus of attention using a 2D RGB camera as input to a Multi-Input Convolutional Neural Network with shared weights. The system was validated in a realistic driving scenario.

They design, build, and compete with autonomous vehicles in events ranging from lane following, obstacle avoidance, platooning, to Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation. Technologies involved include electronic controls, computer-based vision systems, object detection, rangefinding, and global positioning. The real world applications are in intelligent transportation systems, the military, and manufacturing automation. Students have been creative and have learned a great deal. Industry recruiters have been highly supportive.

Structural Vibration of an Engine Block and a Rotating Crankshaft Coupled Through Elastohydrodynamic Bearings

A comprehensive formulation is presented for the dynamics of a rotating flexible crankshaft coupled with the dynamics of an engine block through a finite difference elastohydrodynamic main bearing lubrication algorithm. The coupling is based on detailed equilibrium conditions at the bearings. The component mode synthesis is employed for modeling the crankshaft and block dynamic behavior. A specialized algorithm for coupling the rigid and flexible body dynamics of the crankshaft within the framework of the component mode synthesis has been developed. A finite difference lubrication algorithm is used for computing the oil film elastohydrodynamic characteristics. A computationally accurate and efficient mapping algorithm has been developed for transferring information between a high - density computational grid for the elastohydrodynamic bearing solver and a low - density structural grid utilized in computing the crankshaft and block structural dynamic response.

A Decision Analytic Approach to Incorporating Value of Information in Autonomous Systems

Selecting the right transportation platform is challenging, whether it is at a personal level or at an organizational level. In settings where predominantly the functional aspects rule the decision making process, defining the mobility of a vehicle is critical for comparing different offerings and making acquisition decisions. With the advent of intelligent vehicles, exhibiting partial to full autonomy, this challenge is exacerbated. The same vehicle may traverse independently and with greater tolerance for acceleration than human occupied vehicles, while, at the same time struggle with obstacle avoidance. The problem presents itself at the individual vehicle sensing level and also at the vehicle/fleet level. At the sensing and information level, one can be looking at issues of latency, bandwidth and optimal information fusion from multiple sources including privileged sensing. At the overall vehicle level, one focuses more on the ability to complete missions.

Novel Operating Mode for DC-to-DC Converters in PHEVs

The demand on the DC-to-DC converters is increasing and more capable units are required. In this paper we will introduce a third mode of operation that will allow the Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV) to meet the LV load demand without weight or cost increase. This mode operation will utilize the DC-to-DC converters of the on-board charger to compensate for the increase in load demand.

Charge Capacity Versus Charge Time in CC-CV and Pulse Charging of Li-Ion Batteries

Due to their high energy density and low self-discharge rates, lithium-ion batteries are becoming the favored solution for portable electronic devices and electric vehicles. Lithium-Ion batteries require special charging methods that must conform to the battery cells' power limits. Many different charging methods are currently used, some of these methods yield shorter charging times while others yield more charge capacity. This paper compares the constant-current constant-voltage charging method against the time pulsed charging method. Charge capacity, charge time, and cell temperature variations are contrasted. The results allow designers to choose between these two methods and select their parameters to meet the charging needs of various applications.

Buckling of Structures Subject to Multiple Forces

Frames are important structures found in many transportation applications such as automotive bodies and train cars. They are also widely employed in buildings, bridges, and other load bearing designs. When a frame is carrying multiple loads, it can potentially risk a catastrophic buckling failure. The loads on the frame may be non-proportional in that one force stays constant while the other is increased until buckling occurs. In this study the buckling problem is formulated as a constrained eigenvalue problem (CEVP). As opposed to other CEVP in which the eigenvectors are forced to comply with a number of the constraints, the eigenvalues in the current CEVP are subject to some equality constraints. A numerical algorithm for solving the constrained eigenvalue problem is presented. The algorithm is a simple trapping scheme in which the computation starts with an initial guess and a window containing the potential target for the eigenvalue is identified.

Forming Limit Measurement Using a Multi-Sensor Digital Image Correlation System

A multi-sensor Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system is employed to measure the deformation of metal specimens during tensile tests. The multi-sensor DIC system is capable of providing high quality contour and deformation data of a 3D object. Methodology and advantages of the multi-sensor DIC system is introduced. Tests have been done on steel and aluminum specimens to prove the performance of the system. With the help of the multi-sensor DIC system, we proposed our approaches to determine the forming limit based on shape change around the necking area instead of calculate the FLD based on the in-plane strains. With the employed system, all measurements are done post-deformation, no testing controlling mechanism, such as load force control or touching control, is required. The extracted data is analyzed and the result shows a possibility that we may be able to improve current technique for Forming Limit Diagram (FLD) measurement.

Improving Material Property Measurement by Using Multi-Camera Digital Image Correlation

In this work, a multi-camera Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system is applied to measure the material properties of aluminum (5754) specimens. Such tests are usually done using 2D (one-camera) or 3D (two-camera) DIC systems. A multi-camera DIC system includes three or more cameras and inherits all the advantages of a conventional 3D DIC system (with two cameras) such as, full-field measurement, high accuracy and high speed. In addition, this system further improves the measured results by including redundant data. In this work, we will show the potential of this system to measure a variety of material properties at one time.

EV Penetration for Minimizing Power System Emissions

This work illustrates the potential of Electric Vehicles (EVs) as a grid support tool that will lower carbon emissions from both the energy production sector and the transportation sector. EVs can provide peak shaving power to the grid while discharging and valley filling power while charging to flatten the total load curve of a distribution system. The idea is called Vehicle to Grid (V2G). Flattening the load curve will allow utility providers to delay upgrading, or the purchase of new power generation stations, as well as best utilize renewable energy resources that may be uncontrollable in nature. Electrical energy production and transportation combined accounted for 2,534 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions in the US in 2019. Utilizing EVs for transportation as well as grid support will decrease this figure in each sector. This technology may pave the way to cleaner, more reliable, cost effective energy systems.

Design Optimization and Reliability Estimation with Incomplete Uncertainty Information

Existing methods for design optimization under uncertainty assume that a high level of information is available, typically in the form of data. In reality, however, insufficient data prevents correct inference of probability distributions, membership functions, or interval ranges. In this article we use an engine design example to show that optimal design decisions and reliability estimations depend strongly on uncertainty characterization. We contrast the reliability-based optimal designs to the ones obtained using worst-case optimization, and ask the question of how to obtain non-conservative designs with incomplete uncertainty information. We propose an answer to this question through the use of Bayesian statistics. We estimate the truck's engine reliability based only on available samples, and demonstrate that the accuracy of our estimates increases as more samples become available.

An Application of Ant Colony Optimization to Energy Efficient Routing for Electric Vehicles

With the increased market share of electric vehicles, the demand for energy-efficient routing algorithms specifically optimized for electric vehicles has increased. Traditional routing algorithms are focused on optimizing the shortest distance or the shortest time in finding a path from point A to point B. These traditional methods have been working well for fossil fueled vehicles. Electric vehicles, on the other hand, require different route optimization techniques. Negative edge costs, battery power limits, battery capacity limits, and vehicle parameters that are only available at query time, make the task of electric vehicle routing a challenging problem. In this paper, we present an ant colony based, energy-efficient routing algorithm that is optimized and designed for electric vehicles. Simulation results show improvements in the energy consumption of electric vehicles when applied to a start-to-destination routing problem.
