ERRATUM: Study of Reproducibility of Pedal Tracking and Detection Response Task to Assess Driver Distraction

1. On page 111, the authors have described a method to assess driver distraction. In this method, participants maintained a white square size on a forward display by using a game gas pedal of like in car-following situation. The size of the white square is determined by calculating the distance to a virtual lead vehicle. The formulas to correct are used to explain variation of acceleration of the virtual lead vehicle. The authors inadvertently incorporated old formulas they had used previously. In the experiments discussed in the article, the corrected formulas were used. Therefore, there is no change in the results. The following from the article:

Safe and Secure Software Updates Over The Air for Electronic Brake Control Systems

Vehicle manufacturers are suffering from increasing expenses for fixing software issues. This fact is mainly driving their desire to use mobile communication channels for doing Software Updates Over The Air (SOTA). Software updates today are typically done at vehicle service stations by connecting the vehicles’ electronic network via the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) interface to a service computer. These operations are done under the control of trained technicians. SOTA means that the update process must get handled by the driver. Two critical aspects need to get considered when doing SOTA at Electronic Brake Control (EBC) systems. Both will determine the acceptance of SOTA by legal authorities and by the passengers: The safety and security of the vehicle The availability of the vehicle for the passengers The security aspect includes the necessity to protect the vehicle and the manufacturers IP from unwanted attacks.

Measures to Prevent Unauthorized Access to the In-Vehicle E/E System, Due to the Security Vulnerability of a Remote Diagnostic Tester

Remote diagnostic systems support diagnostic communication by having the capability of sending diagnostic request services to a vehicle and receiving diagnostic response services from a vehicle. These diagnostic services are specified in diagnostic protocols, such as SAE J1979, SAE J1939 or ISO 14229 (UDS). For the purpose of diagnostic communication, the tester needs access to the electronic control units as communication partners. Physically, the diagnostic tester gets access to the entire vehicle´s E/E system, which consists of connectors, wiring, the in-vehicle network (e.g. CAN), the electronic control units, sensors, and actuators. Any connection of external test equipment and the E/E system of a vehicle poses a security vulnerability. The combination can be used for malicious intrusion and manipulation.

Genetic Algorithm based Automated Calibration Tool for Numerical Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Models

An automated process was developed for the calibration of numerical aftertreatment models. The chemical kinetic mechanism examined in this case was part of a simplified SCR model. The process adopted for calibrating the SCR model was based on a micro-population multi-objective genetic algorithm. The algorithm developed was used to calibrate the SCR model using data derived from another, more detailed model to ensure that the evaluation focused only on the effectiveness of the calibration process and was not affected by issues of experimental inaccuracies or details of the model chemistry involved.

Using LES for Predicting High Performance Car Airbox Flow

Aerodynamic had played a primary role in high performance car since the late 1960s, when introduction of the first inverted wings appeared in some formulas. Race car aerodynamic optimisation is one of the most important reason behind the car performance. Moreover, for high performance car using naturally aspired engine, car aerodynamic has a strong influence also on engine performance by its influence on the engine airbox. To improve engine performance, a detailed fluid dynamic analysis of the car/airbox interaction is highly recommended. To design an airbox geometry, a wide range of aspects must be considered because its geometry influences both car chassis design and whole car aerodynamic efficiency. To study the unsteady fluid dynamic phenomena inside an airbox, numerical approach could be considered as the best way to reach a complete integration between chassis, car aerodynamic design, and airbox design.

Development and Testing of an Innovative Oil Condition Sensor

In order to detect degradation of engine oil lubricant, bench testing along with a number of diesel-powered Ford trucks were instruments and tested. The purpose of the bench testing was primarily to determine performance aspects such as repeatability, hysteresis effects and so on. Vehicle testing was conducted by designing and installing a separate oil reservoir along with a circulation system which was mounted in the vicinity of the oil pan. An innovative oil sensor was directly installed on the reservoir which can measure five (5) independent oil parameters (viscosity, density, permittivity, conductance, temperature). In addition, the concept is capable of detecting the oil level continuously during normal engine operation. The sensing system consists of an ultrasonic transducer for the oil level detection as well as a Tuning Fork mechanical resonator for the oil condition measurement.

Study on a High Torque Density Motor for an Electric Traction Vehicle

A compact and high performance electric motor, called the 3D motor and designed to achieve output torque density of 100 Nm/L, was developed for use on electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. The motor adopts an axial flux configuration, consisting of a disk-shaped stator sandwiched between two disk-shaped rotors with permanent magnets. It also adopts 9-phase current with a fractional slot combination, both of which increase the torque density. The rated torque output of this high power-density motor is achieved by applying a hybrid cooling system comprising a water jacket on the outer case of the stator and oil dispersion into the air gaps. The mechanical strength of the rotors against centrifugal force and that of the stator against torque exertion were confirmed in mechanical experiments. Several measures such as flux barriers, a chamfered rotor rim, parallel windings, and radially laminated cores were adopted to suppress losses.

Hydrogen in Diesel Exhaust: Effect on Diesel Oxidation Catalyst Flow Reactor Experiments and Model Predictions

Engine operating strategies typically geared towards higher fuel economy and lower NOx widely affect exhaust composition and temperature. These exhaust variables critically drive the performance of After Treatment (AT) components, and hence should guide their screening and selection. Towards this end, the effect of H2 level in diesel exhaust on the performance of a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) was studied using flow reactor experiments, vehicle emission measurements and mathematical models. Vehicle chassis dynamometer data showed that exhaust from light-duty and heavy-duty diesel trucks contained very little to almost no H2 (FTP average CO/H2 ∼ 40 to 70) as compared to that of a gasoline car exhaust (FTP average CO/H2 ∼ 3). Two identical flow reactor experiments, one with H2 (at CO/H2 ∼ 3) and another with no H2 in the feed were designed to screen DOCs under simulated feed gas conditions that mimicked these two extremes in the exhaust H2 levels.

Reconstruction of Time-Resolved Vehicle Emissions Measurements by Deconvolution

A thorough understanding of vehicle exhaust aftertreatment system performance requires time-resolved emissions measurements that accurately follow driving transients, and that are correctly time-aligned with exhaust temperature and flow measurements. The transient response of conventional gas analyzers is characterized by both a time delay and an attenuation of high-frequency signal components. The distortion that this imposes on transient emissions measurements causes significant errors in instantaneous calculations of aftertreatment system efficiency, and thus in modal mass analysis. This creates difficulties in mathematical modeling of emissions system performance and in optimization of powertrain control strategies, leading to suboptimal aftertreatment system designs. A mathematical method is presented which improves the response time of emissions measurements. This begins with development of a model of gas transport and mixing within the sampling and measurement system.

Empirical Modeling of Transient Emissions and Transient Response for Transient Optimization

Empirical models for engine-out oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and smoke emissions have been developed for the purpose of minimizing transient emissions while maintaining transient response. Three major issues have been addressed: data acquisition, data processing and modeling method. Real and virtual transient parameters have been identified for acquisition. Accounting for the phase shift between transient engine events and transient emission measurements has been shown to be very important to the quality of model predictions. Several methods have been employed to account for the transient transport delays and sensor lags which constitute the phase shift. Finally several different empirical modeling methods have been used to determine the most suitable modeling method for transient emissions. These modeling methods include several kinds of neural networks, global regression and localized regression.

The Application of the Vincent Circle to Vibro-Acoustic and Duct Acoustic Problems

Over 30 years ago, A. H. Vincent of Westland Helicopters demonstrated that if a structure is excited harmonically, the response at another position (at a fixed frequency) will trace a circle in the complex plane as a result of a dynamic stiffness modification between two points. As either the real or imaginary part of an introduced dynamic stiffness is varied from minus infinity to plus infinity, the structural or acoustic response on any position will map a circle in the complex plane. This paper reviews the basis for this little known principle for vibro-acoustics problems and illustrates the viability for a cantilevered plate example. The applicability of the method is then considered for strictly acoustic systems like intake and exhaust systems. Specifically, it is shown that the response traces a circle in the complex plane if either the real or imaginary parts of the source or termination impedance are varied from minus to plus infinity.

Validation Study of a Generalized Minor Rear Vehicle Crash MADYMO Model Utilizing Real World Data

A generalized MADYMO minor rear crash vehicle model with BioRIDII ATD was developed and validated using the mean response of previously published 12 km/h delta-V rear crash tests. BioRIDII simulation pelvis, thorax and head x-axis accelerations, as well as head y-axis angular acceleration, fell within corridors defining +/- one standard deviation of the mean BioRIDII crash test responses. Peak sagittal plane BioRIDII upper neck forces and moments in the simulation were on par with the mean values observed from the crash tests. After the model was validated for 12 km/h delta-V, the model was further exercised by performing simulations with (1) a Hybrid III 50th percentile occupant and (2) by reducing the pulse by 40% of its original value. Results indicate that this generalized minor rear crash model could be useful in accurately estimating occupant kinematics and kinetics in minor crashes up to at least 12 km/h delta-V as an alternative to expensive and time consuming crash testing.

Using Designing for Human Variability to optimize Aircraft eat Layout

Integrating the seemingly divergent objectives of aircraft seat configuration is a difficult task. Aircraft manufacturers look to design seats to maximize customer satisfaction and in-flight safety, but these objectives can conflict with the profit motive of airline companies. In order to boost revenue by increasing the number of passengers per aircraft, airline companies may increase seat height and decrease seat pitch. This results in disaccommodation of a greater percentage of the passenger population and is a reason for rising customer dissatisfaction. This paper describes an effort to bridge this gap by incorporating digital human models, layout optimization, and a profit-maximizing constraint into the aircraft seat design problem. A simplified aircraft seat design experiment is conceptualized and its results are extrapolated to an airline passenger population.

Dynamic Analysis of Car Ingress/Egress Movement: an Experimental Protocol and Preliminary Results

This paper focuses on full body dynamical analysis of car ingress/egress motion. It aims at proposing an experimental protocol adapted for analysing joint loads using inverse dynamics. Two preliminary studies were first performed in order to 1/ define the main driver/car interactions so as to allow measuring the contact forces at all possible contact zones and 2/ identify the design parameters that mainly influence the discomfort. In order to verify the feasibility of the protocol, a laboratory study was carried out, during which two subjects tested two car configurations. The experimental equipment was composed of a variable car mock-up, an optoelectronic motion tracking system, two 6D-force plates installed on the ground next to the doorframe and on the car floor, a 6D-Force sensor between the steering wheel and the steering column, and two pressure maps on the seat. Motions were reconstructed from measured surface markers trajectories using inverse kinematics.

Data Abstraction Architecture for Monitoring and Control of Lunar Habitats

A Lunar habitat will be highly sensored and generate large amounts of data or telemetry. For this data to be useful to humans monitoring these systems and to automated algorithms controlling these systems it will need to be converted into more abstract data. This abstracted data will reflect the trends, states and characteristics of the systems and their environments. Currently this data abstraction process is manual and ad hoc. We are developing a Data Abstraction Architecture (DAA) that allows engineers to design software processes that iteratively convert habitat data into higher and higher levels of abstraction. The DAA is a series of mathematical or logical transformations of telemetry data to provide appropriate inputs from a hardware system to a hardware system controller, system engineer, or crew. The DAA also formalizes the relationships between data and control and the relationships between the data themselves.

Sphere-To-Cone Mating – New Solution to Improve Brake Tube Connector Sealing Robustness

Recently invented solutions (Canadian Patent 2593305 and United States Patent Applications 20090015008 and 20070194567) incorporate sphere-to-cone type of the interaction between sealing surfaces in a brake tube connector. An interaction of sphere-to-cone type has numerous advantages over one with a cone-to-cone type which is currently utilized in conventional automotive brake tube connectors. Incorporation of a sphere-to-cone interaction between the sealing surfaces dramatically improves connector's sealing robustness. Sphere-to-cone based connectors are resilient to the tube and seat axes misalignment. Correspondingly, sphere-to-cone based connectors have less variation of the securing torque and virtually no propensity to locked misalignment occurrence. The article analyzes another fundamental advantage of a sphere-to-cone mating over the conventional cone-to-cone one.

Stability Analysis of a Disc Brake with Piezoelectric Self-Sensing Technique

Piezoelectric self-sensing allows to measure frequency response functions of dynamical systems with one single piezoelectric element. This piezoceramics is used as actuator and sensor simultaneously. In this study, a model-based piezoelectric self-sensing technique is presented to obtain potential squealing frequencies of an automotive disc brake. The frequency-response function of the brake system is obtained during operation by measuring the current flowing through the piezoelectric element while the piezoelectric element is driven by a harmonic voltage signal with constant amplitude. The current flow is composed of the part which is required to drive the piezoelectric element as an actuator and a second part which is the sensor signal that is proportional to the vibration amplitude of the attached mechanical system. Typically the first part is dominant and the influence of the mechanical system is marginal.

Current and New Approaches for Brake Noise Evaluation and Rating

Predominant brake noise evaluation and rating was developed many years ago and no longer fulfills the need of modern development work. An extended description of a noisy brake event (European expert group guideline EKB 3006) and a standardized test data exchange format, allowing the comparison of different source test results (EKB 3008) are presented. Today's noise rating systems are described and compared by selected examples. The paper proposes an open 4 level noise rating system (EKB 3007). It starts with simple occurrence statistics, noise rating based on sound levels, situational noise rating including duration and finally based on the human perception, described by psychoacoustics.

Stator Side Voltage Regulation of Permanent Magnet Generators

Permanent magnet AC generators are robust, inexpensive, and efficient compared to wound-field synchronous generators with brushless exciters. Their application in variable-speed applications is made difficult by the variation of the stator voltage with shaft speed. This paper presents the use of stator-side reactive power injection as a means of regulating the stator voltage. Design-oriented analysis of machine performance for this mode of operation identifies an appropriate level of machine saliency that enables excellent terminal voltage regulation over a specified speed and load range, while minimizing stator current requirements. This paper demonstrates that the incorporation of saliency into the permanent magnet generator can significantly reduce the size of the reactive current source that is required to regulate the stator voltage during operation over a wide range of speeds and loads.

System Dependency Analysis as a Common Cause Search Engine for Complex Aircraft Systems

The system dependency analysis for complex aircraft systems is a model-based methodology and tool for analyzing availability and minimum acceptable control requirements for failures or event scenarios to support the aircraft and system safety analyses (SAE ARP4761) required to show compliance to 14CFR/CS §25.1309, §25.671 and other, related requirements. Aspects of the system such as functional interaction and dependencies to supply systems, physical items (equipment, wiring and tubing) and installation aspects are included in the analysis. This paper describes additional steps to enable the search for potential common cause failure conditions for the system of interest or airplane level systems based on the system model. Common cause analysis (CCA) procedures using the system dependency analysis rely on a systematic and checklist-based approach to determine potential common cause failure conditions.
