The Study of Optimization of Sliding Door Effect

A sliding door system is one of the vehicle door types, which is generally applied to the MPVs. The Sliding door is contains three rails (an upper, a center, and lower rail), which are mounted on body structure, and three rollers (the upper roller, the center roller, Lower roller), which are mounted on the sliding door side. The system is different from a swing door, rotated by hinge axis. To set up sliding door layout for better performance, predict operating force is one of the main factors, But The door moving trace is on three-dimension, hard to calculate and predict. So in this study, it is an object to analyze the impact between the main factors affecting the performance of the closing and open performance and the sliding door through the study formula and a layout scheme for ensuring the best operating performance of the sliding doors.

The Studies of Crash Characteristics According to Chassis Frame Types

There are various tests for evaluating how well a vehicle protects people in a crash. The frontal and offset crash test is one of the most important tests that evaluate the crashworthiness of a vehicle. In this paper, we will discuss some parameters that have a major effect on the amount and pattern of intrusion into the occupant compartment during the frontal and offset crash test. And the characteristics of impact are described according to the types of chassis frame, T-type frame and #-type frame. The T-frame has worse performance than #-frame in crash, So it is necessary to make stronger dash compartments in T-frame. We will design a vehicle which has optimized body, chassis structure and material selections by controlling major parameters of frontal crash performance.

The Experimental Study on the Body Panel Shape to Minimize the Weight of the Damping Material

The experimental study on the automotive body panel shape has researched a way to reduce the damping material. Among each differently designed panel shapes, the curved panel shape, with high rigidity, or dynamic stiffness, and uneven deformation mode, has found to most reduce the vibration energy and damping material application. This study shows how could the panel shape influence the NVH performance, which would be measured according to several specifically designed panel shapes in order to compare with the conventional bead panel. And this research proposes the way to optimize the damping material to minimize its weight.

The Effects of Suspension Component Stiffness on the Road Noise: A Sensitivity Study and Optimization

This paper investigates the sensitivity of stiffness of front and rear suspension systems on the structure-borne road noise inside a vehicle cabin. A flexible multi-body dynamics based approach is used to simulate the structural dynamics of suspension systems including rubber bushings, suspension arms, a subframe and a twist beam. This approach can accurately predict the force transfer to the trimmed body at each suspension mounting point up to a frequency range of 0 to 300 Hz, which is validated against a force measurement test using a suspension test rig. Predicted forces at each mounting point are converted to road noise inside the cabin by multiplying it with experimentally obtained noise transfer functions. All of the suspension components are modeled as flexible bodies using Craig-Bampton component mode synthesis method.

Study on Sound Insulation Performance of Vehicle Dash Reinforcements

Dash panel is the most important path of structure-borne and air-borne interior noise for engine-driven vehicles. Reinforcements, which are added to dash panel, are mainly designed in order to suppress the structure-borne noise contribution from the dash panel. However, the effects of dash reinforcements do not seem clear in the viewpoint of air-borne noise. In this paper, the insulation performance of a dash structure with spot-welded reinforcements is studied through several STL (Sound Transmission Loss) tests and STL simulations. The results of this study could be utilized for increasing the sound insulation performance of vehicle body structure.

Study of Optimizing Sliding Door Efforts and Package Layout

A sliding door is one of the car door systems, which is generally applied to the vans. Compared with swing doors, a sliding door gives comfort to the passengers when they get in or out the car. With an increasing number of the family-scale activities, there followed a huge demand on the vans, which caused growing interests in the convenience technology of the sliding door system. A typical sliding door system has negative effects on the vehicle interior package and the operating effort. Since the door should move backward without touching the car body, the trajectory of the center rail should be a curve. The curve-shaped center rail infiltrates not only the passenger shoulder room, but also the opening flange curve, which results in the interior package loss. Moreover, as the passenger pulls the door outside handle along the normal direction of the door outer skin, the curved rail causes the opening effort loss.

Road Noise Reduction Using a Source Decomposition and Noise Path Analysis

It is considered that improper usage of rubber bushes and weak dynamic characteristics of chassis and body structures yield interior road noise problems. This paper describes systematic processes for road noise improvement along with measurement and analysis process. Firstly, the noise sources are identified by using a source decomposition method. Secondly, the main noise paths are identified by using a noise path analysis (NPA) method. Thirdly, the design modification of body panels is suggested for road noise reduction by using a panel contribution analysis. Finally the method is validated by applying to road noise improvement process for a new vehicle.

Reinforcement of Low-Frequency Sound by Using a Panel Speaker Attached to the Roof Panel of a Passenger Car

The woofer in a car should be large to cover the low frequencies, so it is heavy and needs an ample space to be installed in a passenger car. The geometry of the woofer should conform to the limited available space and layout in general. In many cases, the passengers feel that the low-frequency contents are not satisfactory although the speaker specification covers the low frequencies. In this work, a thin panel is installed between the roof liner and the roof panel, and it is used as the woofer. The vibration field is controlled by many small actuators to create the speaker and baffle zones to avoid the sound distortion due to the modal interaction. The generation of speaker and baffle zones follows the inverse vibro-acoustic rendering technique. In the actual implementation, a thin acrylic plate of 0.53x0.2 m2 is used as the radiator panel, and the control actuator array is composed of 16 moving-coil actuators.

Reduction of Road Noise by the Investigation of Contributions of Vehicle Components

The mobility technique is used to analyze the transfer functions of road noise between the suspension and the body structure. In the previous analyses, the suspension system and the body structure are altogether modeled as subsystems in the noise transfer path. In this paper, the mobility between the suspension and the body structure is analyzed by the dynamic stiffness at the connecting points. The measured drive point acceleration FRF at the connecting point in the transfer path was used to estimate the contributions of subsystems. The vibration modes of tire, the acoustic noise of tire's interior cavity, the vibration modes of the car's interior room, and the vibrations of body structure and the chassis are also considered to analyze the coupling effects of the road noise. Analyzing the measured results, direction for modification of car components is suggested.

Roof racks have become a very popular feature of vehicles as the market demand for SUV's and RV's has increased drastically over the years. Aeolian tone from the cross bars however, could be a source of severe discomfort for the passengers. Both experimental and numerical steps are taken to enhance the understanding of the generation mechanism of the wind noise. A successful reduction of the noise is achieved by imposing asymmetry in the section geometry, which reduces the strength of Karman vortices shed downstream.

The power sliding door system(PSD) is being equipped in the MPV(Multi-Purpose Vehicle/minivans) vehicle for convenience in the door operation. This study will focus on package space optimization for interior design and overall vehicle packaging for the vehicles equipped with PSD. To optimize the package, investigation for PSD's structure need to be done and the examples of other vehicle maker will be investigated and compared. The study that considers performance and package requirements resulted in a unique PSD design. And finally, this study will show the result vehicle in which the optimized mechanism is applied.

Automotive OEMs have introduced a new development paradigm, modular architecture development, to improve diversity quality and production efficiency. It needs solid fundamentals of system-based performance evaluation and development for each system level and single component level. When it comes to NVH development, it is challenging to realize the modular concept because noise and vibration should be transferred through various transfer path consisting of many parts and systems, which interact with each other. It is challenging for a single system of interest to be evaluated independently of the adjacent parts and environments. In this study, a new system-based development process for a vehicle suspension was investigated by applying blocked force theory and FRF-based dynamic substructuring. The objective is to determine the better dynamic stiffness distribution of many bushes installed in a suspension system in the frequency range corresponding to road noise.

In particular, the door panel is assembled from all of the above-mentioned parts and thereby necessitates a robust structure. Therefore, this study focuses on the structural stiffness of the door inner panel module mounting area because the door module is closely to the glass raising and lowering, which is intrinsically linked to various quality issues.

The topology optimization made a great success in pure structural design in an actual industrial field. However, a lot of factors interact each other in a actual engineering field in highly complicated manner. The typical conceptual trade-off is that cost and performance, that is, since they are competing factors, one can't improve the specific system without consideration of interaction. The vehicle has lots of competing factors, especially like fuel economy and acceleration performance, mass and stiffness, roominess and cost, short front overhang and crash-worthiness and so on. In addition, they interact each other in a more complicated manner, that is, fuel economy has something to do with not only engine performance but also mass, roominess, stiffness, the length of overhang, trunk volume, etc. So, most of decision-makings have been made by management based on subjective knowledge and experience.

Door slam noise is very important sound, because Door Slam noise gives a big effect in high-class feeling of vehicle and brand identity. But it is very difficult to analyze door slam noise by traditional analysis and overall sound level. Moreover, the short occurrence time of Door Slam noise makes the analysis more difficult. In this paper, we used the latest developed sound quality methods for analyzing Door Slam noise. And we had performed jury test for luxury vehicles. After that we had carried out correlation analysis between objective analysis and subjective test. Finally, we could suggest Door Slam noise Index by linear regression analysis.

Minimizing the Rattling of Door Glass

Significant effort has been expended to improve the sound made by a closing car door. This study focuses on reducing door glass rattle sounds, not only evaluating the rattle influence of door glass support but also introducing an approach to reduce glass rattle noise by using sealing components. The first part of the study is dedicated to minimizing vibration. A jig is constructed to evaluate the influence of a door glass support on the rattling. The jig is employed so that the glass meshing between the A and B pillars can be controlled; the glass holder moves in the x- and z-directions and the belt molding moves in the y-direction. An impact hammer test was adopted for investigating door glass rattle. The frequency response obtained via impact hammer testing is analyzed by varying the glass support points and important factors that should be considered in early design stages are obtained. The second study is about optimizing vibration absorption.

Investigation of Gap Deflector Efficiency for Reduction of Sunroof Buffeting

The efficiency of a gap-type of deflector for suppressing vehicle sunroof buffeting is studied in this work. Buffeting is an unpleasant low frequency booming caused by flow-excited Helmholtz resonance of the interior cabin. Accurate prediction of this phenomenon requires accounting for the bi-directional coupling between the transient shear layer aerodynamics (vortex shedding) and the acoustic response of the cabin. Numerical simulations were performed using a CFD/CAA numerical method based on the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). The well established LBM approach provides the time-dependent solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, and directly captures both turbulent and acoustic pressure fluctuations over a wide range of scales given adequate computational grid resolution. In this study the same gap-type deflector configuration is installed on two different types of vehicles, a SUV and a sedan.

Evaluation of Trim Absorption to Exterior Dynamic and Acoustic Excitations Using a Hybrid Physical-Modal Approach

The NVH study of trimmed vehicle body is essential in improving the passenger comfort and optimizing the vehicle weight. Efficient modal finite-element approaches are widely used in the automotive industry for investigating the frequency response of large vibro-acoustic systems involving a body structure coupled to an acoustic cavity. In order to accurately account for the localized and frequency-dependant damping mechanism of the trim components, a direct physical approach is however preferred. Thus, a hybrid modal-physical approach combines both efficiency and accuracy for large trimmed body analysis. Dynamic loads and exterior acoustic loads can then be applied on the trimmed body model in order to evaluate the transfer functions between these loads and the acoustic response in the car compartment.

Evaluation of Collapse Absorption Capability for Hydroformed Tubes

The tube hydroforming technology (THF) has been extensively used as auto-body structural members such as engine cradle, frame rail etc. in order to meet the urgent need of vehicle weight and cost reduction as well as high quality. In this paper we experimentally investigate the mechanical properties for hydroformed tubes with various bulging strains under the plane strain mode. Axial compression tests for hydroformed tubes are performed to investigate the collapse load and collapse absorption capacity through the collapse load-displacement curves. Moreover the collapse absorption capacities are compared and discussed between as-received, hydroformed, and press formed tubes. Results demonstrate that the hydroformed tubes show higher collapse absorption capability in comparison with the as-received tube and the press formed tube, because of its high yield strength due to strain hardening.

Development of a Light Weight Luggage Board Using the Sandwich Molding Method

A crucial component utilized in the trunk space is the luggage board. Positioned at the bottom of the trunk, the trunk board separates the vehicle body from the interior and supports for luggage. The luggage board serves multiple functions, including load-bearing stiffness for luggage, partition structure functionality, noise insulation, and thermal insulation. There is a need for a competitive new luggage board manufacturing method to meet the increasing demand for luggage boards in response to the changing market environment. To address this, the "integrated sandwich molding method" is required. The integrated sandwich molding method utilizes three key methodologies: grouping processes to integrate similar functions, analyzing materials to replace them with suitable alternatives, and overcoming any lacking functionality through integrated design structures. This paper presents a methodology for developing the integrated sandwich molding method.
