Under-Hood CRFM and CAC Air Flow Management of Vehicle to Improve Thermal Performance by 1D Method Using Amesim

Currently the Automotive industry demands highly competitive product to survive in the global tough competition. The engine cooling system plays a vital role in meeting the stringent emission norms and improving the vehicle fuel economy apart from maintaining the operating temperature of engine. The airflow through vehicle subsystems like the grille, bumper, the heat exchangers, the fan and shroud and engine bay are called as front-end flow. Front end flow is crucial factor in engine cooling system as well as in determining the aerodynamic drag of vehicle. The airflow through the engine compartment is determined by the front-end vehicle geometry, the CRFM and CAC package, the engine back restriction and the engine compartment geometry including the inlet and outlet sections. This paper discusses the 1D modelling method for front-end airflow rate prediction and thermal performance by 1D method. The underbody components are stacked using heat stack and simulated in pressure mode.

Thermodynamic Study of Turbocharger Matching and Combustion Optimization for Better Low End Torque and High Speed Power

Diesel Engines are known for its low fuel consumption coupled with high specific power output. Downsizing the engines with turbocharging and common rail injection technologies are the recent trends in improving the efficiency and performance of diesel engines. It is very challenging to match the torque targets at low speed and power targets at high speed range of a diesel engines due to system hardware limitation. Torque at lower engine speed will improve a greater extent to the drivability of a vehicle. Formation of black smoke is a major problem in lower engine speeds due lack of air availability. The use of variable geometry, two stage turbocharging and four valves per cylinder are some of the solutions which make the task simpler, also involves additional cost and fundamental design changes. At the same time commonly used waste gate turbocharger for boosting the airflow, fails to deliver required air flow at lower engine speeds.

Reduction of Diesel Engine Combustion Noise through Various Injection Strategies

The contribution of engine borne noise is the major source of vehicle noise in diesel powered vehicles. The engine noise can be minimized by modification of engine components design and also with different acoustic abatement techniques. The research activities were carried out on 4-cylinder CRDe engine for SUV application. All the emission and performance parameters along with combustion noise was captured continuously for all the part load points from 1000 RPM to 2750 RPM with respect to the different road conditions and driving cycle. This paper targets on reducing the combustion noise at the noise prone zones only on the basis of the injection strategies ensuring no ill effect on the emissions and fuel economy. The first step was the reduction of rail pressure which helped noise levels to be reduced by almost 6 dB at noise zones. Main injection timing retardation was tried at all possible zones which influenced in considerable noise reduction at various zones.

Prediction of Oil Flow inside Tractor Transmission for Splash Type Lubrication

This study introduces a method to examine the flow path of the lubricant inside a transmission housing of a tractor. A typical gearbox has several loads bearing elements which are in relative sliding motion to each other which causes heat to be released. The major sources of friction as well as heat are the meshing teeth between gears (sun/planet, planet/ring & power/range drive gear), thrust washers, thrust bearings and needle roller bearings. The churning of oil performs the vital function of both lubricating these sliding interfaces and cooling these sources of heat, thereby preventing failure of the gearbox. In this paper, we have applied VOF multiphase flow model and sliding meshing to simulate the fluid flow during splashed lubrication within a mating gear box. Lubrication oil dynamics and oil surface interaction with the air is modeled using VOF multiphase approach.

The present study will focus on the Phosphorous impact on Pt based Diesel Oxidation Catalyst after exposure to it over time based on engine oil consumption for lifetime to meet the durability requirements of Indian legislations and Indian OEMs. With BSVI announcement India along with US/Europe will ply their Automobile/Non-Road(>56Kw) engines with Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC), Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), devices for Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and last but not least an Ammonia Slip Catalyst (ASC). This entire chain of After Treatment system elements play a vital role in emission reduction. Apart from this, these system elements are very much dependent on their preceding system and their performance strongly depend on the previous Catalytic function.

Current high rating thermal loaded engines must have super-efficient lubrication system to provide clean oil at appropriate pressure and appropriate lube oil temperature to every part of the engine at all engine RPM speeds and loads. So oil pump not only have to satisfy above parameters but also it should be durable till engine life. Gerotor pumps are internal rotary positive-displacement pumps in which the outer rotor has one tooth more than the inner rotor. The gear profiles have a cycloidal shape. Both are meshed in conjugate to each other. Gerotor takes up engine power through crankshaft and deliver to various engine consumers at required pressure and required time. Over the complete engine rpm speed and loads range, oil pump need to perform efficiently to provide proper functioning of the engine. Otherwise low oil pressure leads to more friction in the pump, seizure of bearings and final failure of the engine .High oil pressure can lead to failure in oil filter, gaskets and seal.

Parametric Investigations on the Performance of Diesel Oxidation Catalyst in a Light Duty Diesel Engine - An Experimental and Modelling Study

In order to comply with the stringent future emission mandates of automotive diesel engines it is essential to deploy a suitable combination of after treatment devices like diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), diesel particulate filter (DPF) and DeNox converter (Lean NOx Trap (LNT) or Selective Catalytic reduction (SCR) system). Since arriving at a suitable strategy through experiments will involve deploying a lot of resources, development of well-tuned simulation models that can reduce time and cost is important. In the first phase of this study experiments were conducted on a single cylinder light duty diesel engine fitted with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) at thirteen steady state mode points identified in the NEDC (New European Driving cycle) cycle. Inlet and exit pressures and temperatures, exhaust emission concentrations and catalyst bed temperature were measured. A one dimensional simulation model was developed in the commercial software AVL BOOST.

The tractor plays a major role in Agricultural and Construction applications. In a tractor, hydraulic system is act as a heart of the vehicle which controls the draft and position of the implement. Hydraulic system consists of Powertrain assembly, 3-point linkage and DC sensing assembly. The design of hydraulic powertrain assembly is challenging because the loads acting on the system varies based on the type of implement, type of crop, stage of farming and soil conditions etc., Hydraulic powertrain assembly is designed based on standards like IS 12207-2019 which regulates the test methods for the system based on the lift capacity of the tractor. In this paper, virtual simulation has been established to optimize the design and perform the test correlation.

Optimized In Cylinder NOx Reduction Strategy for Meeting BSVI Emission Limits

The tough emission limits of BSVI norms with very low levels of NOx and PM emissions presents major techno economic challenges for the automobile industry. Combined efforts of pollutants reduction by combustion modification as well as the exhaust after treatment devices could only facilitate to achieve the desired emission targets. selective catalytic reduction technology is a mandatory system which uses ammonia from the aqueous urea solution to react with NOx forming nontoxic by products. The cost spent on aqueous urea solution in addition to the cost of BSVI diesel encounters high operating cost for the vehicle. NOx reduction by SCR too requires adequate quantity of ammonia from the AdBlue. Hence sensible utilization of DEF is essential for reduced running cost of the SCR system. SCR efficiency is higher for higher exhaust temperature and it requires minimum exhaust temperature above which only it operates.

In recent time, with inception of BS VI emission regulation with more focus on fuel economy and emission, many engine parts which were conventionally made from metal are getting replaced with plastic components for reducing weight to attain better fuel economy. EGR is commonly used technique to reduce emissions in diesel engine along with after treatment devices. EGR reduces peak combustion temperature inside the combustion chamber thereby reducing NOx. EGR is bypassed from the exhaust manifold, cooled down in EGR cooler and mixed with intake air at upstream of the intake manifold. Throttle valve is used for controlling the charged air flow to cylinders for different vehicle operating conditions. With compact engine layout EGR mixer are often located near to throttle valve thereby increasing the possibility of soot deposition on throttle valve.

Numerical Investigation on the Design and Development of Automotive Exhaust Muffler –A Case Study

Attaining better acoustic performance and back-pressure is a continuous research area in the design and development of passenger vehicle exhaust system. Design parameters such as tail pipe, resonator, internal pipes and baffles, muffler dimensions, number of flow reversals, perforated holes size and number etc. govern the muffler design. However, the analysis on the flow directivity from tail pipe is limited. A case study is demonstrated in this work on the development of automotive muffler with due consideration of back pressure and flow directivity from tail pipe. CFD methodology is engaged to evaluate the back pressure of different muffler configurations. The experimental and numerical results of backpressure have been validated. The numerical results are in close agreement with experimental results.

OEMs these days are focusing on front loading the activities to Virtual Test Environment (VTE) based development owing to high development cost and complexity in achieving repeatability during testing phase of vehicle development,. This process not only helps in reducing the cost and time but also helps in increasing the maturity and confidence level of the developed system before actual prototype is built. In the past, extensive research has happened for increasing the fidelity of VTE by improving plant model efficacy which involves powertrain and other vehicle systems. On the other hand, improving the precision of driver model which is one of the most complex nonlinear systems of virtual environment still remains a challenge. It is apparent that various drivers show different behavior in real world for a given drive profile. While modelling a driver for a VTE, the real world driver attributes are seldom considered.

Model Based Design, Simulation and Experimental Validation of SCR Efficiency Model

Selective Catalytic Reduction is a key technology, used for NOx abatement. There are several models available for SCR system performance out of which most are experimentally verified only in flow reactors with simulated gaseous concentration and standard test conditions. But in the vehicle as well as in the engine test bench the conditions are very much dynamic compared to the simulated conditions of the lab. This transient behaviour emphasizes the need for a best fit model which accommodates the real-world dynamic conditions, thus reducing the overall effort in SCR catalyst selection for any given engine or vehicle application. The primary objective of this paper is to derive an empirical and mathematical efficiency model for SCR catalyst performance through a model-based design approach. The output from the model is compared with the experimental results from the vehicle and engine test bench, to validate the model accuracy.

Fuel economy, performance and drivability are the three important parameters for evaluating the vehicle performance. Powertrain matching plays a major role in meeting the above targets. Fuel economy is measured based on city, highway and some user defined driving cycles which can be considered as real world usage profiles. Performance and Drivability is evaluated based on the in-gear, thru-gear (acceleration performance) and grade-ability performance. The load collective points of the engine greatly influence the engines performance, fuel economy and emissions, which in-turn depends on the N/V ratio of the vehicle. The optimal selection of gear and final drive ratios plays a key role in the optimization of the Powertrain for a particular vehicle. The current study involves dynamic simulation of the vehicle performance and fuel economy at transient engine test-bed for different gear and final drive ratio combinations using AVL DynoExcat-dynamometer.

Mechanical Control Cable Modeling and Simulation to Predict the Load Loss and Deformation

Mechanical control cables or Bowden cables are widely used in various applications for push-pull actions of mechanical systems. In mid-segment tractors, the linkage systems are designed along with control cables to actuate controls such as throttle, braking, transmission shift, position control, etc. due to its design flexibility. Output force and travel efficiency are two major performance parameters that depend on the routing, cable design composition, friction material, load transfer, etc. Virtual simulations can be used to predict cable performance and efficiency. There are different methodologies currently used to model the cable. These available methods can accurately predict either performance or travel efficiency. There is no method available in-house to predict both these parameters. In this paper, a new cable modeling method is proposed by authors using multi-body simulation (MBS) software MSC ADAMS.

Machine Learning Based Approach for Prediction of Hood Oilcanning Performances

Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) simulations are an integral part of the product development process in an automotive industry. The conventional approach involving pre-processing, solving and post-processing is highly time-consuming. Emerging digital technologies such as Machine Learning (ML) can be implemented in early stage of product development cycle to predict key performances without need of traditional CAE. Oil Canning loadcase simulates the displacement and buckling behavior of vehicle outer styling panels. A ML model trained using historical oil canning simulation results can be used to predict the maximum displacement and classify buckling locations. This enables product development team in faster decision making and reduces overall turnaround time. Oil canning FE model features such as stiffness, distance from constraints, etc., are extracted for training database of the ML model. Initially, 32 model features were extracted from the FE model.

Lubrication systems play a major role not only in the durability of modern IC engines but also in performance and emissions. The design of the lubrication system influences the brake thermal efficiency of the engine. Also, efficient lubrication reduces the engine's CO2 emissions significantly. Thus, it is critical for an IC engine to have a well-designed lubrication system that performs efficiently at all engine operating conditions. The conventional lubrication system has a fixed-displacement oil pump that can cater to a particular speed range. However, a fully variable displacement oil pump can cater to a wide range of speeds, thereby enhancing the engine fuel efficiency as the oil flow rates can be controlled precisely based on the engine speed and load conditions. This paper primarily discusses the optimization of a lubrication system with a Variable Displacement Oil Pump (VDOP) and a map-controlled Piston Cooling Jet (PCJ) for a passenger car diesel engine.

The Introduction of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (henceforth will be addressed as CAFE) regulations demand suitable technological upgrades to meet the significant increase in targets of vehicle fleet fuel economy. Engine Downsizing and Friction Reduction measures help in getting one step closer to the target. In a Conventional Oil Pump, the pump discharge flow and pressure are a direct function of operating speed. There is no control over lubricant flow which results in increased power and fuel consumption due to its unnecessary pumping characteristics irrespective of the actual engine demand. This paper discusses the introduction of a variable displacement oil pump (henceforth will be addressed as VDOP) that was adapted to a 1.5-liter 3 Cylinder Diesel Engine. This approach helps the system to reduce parasitic losses as the oil flow is regulated based on the mechanical needs of the engine. The flow is regulated with help of a solenoid valve which receives input from the ECU.

Achieving higher emission norms involves various techniques and it has always been a challenging task on meeting the same. Improving the exhaust temperature is indispensable in order to enhance better conversion efficiency on the after-treatment systems. This paper clearly investigates on the various strategies involved to improve the exhaust temperatures of selective catalytic reduction and post injection strategies to meet the emission norms. On the basis of MIDC operation, key load points were selected and split injections with three pulses were implemented. The variation of both the post injection timing and quantity were performed in this paper in order to evaluate the optimum output. The effect of post injection timing and quantity variation on hydrocarbon emissions, carbon monoxide, diesel oxidation catalyst temperatures was observed on all load points. The above strategy was also evaluated on generating the pressure crank angle data.

Importance of Metallurgical Properties to Prevent Shaft Failures in Off-road Vehicle Validation

Globally, automotive sector is moving towards improving off-road performance, durability and safety. Need of off-road performance leads to unpredictable overload to powertrain system due to unpaved roads and abuse driving conditions. Generally, shafts and gears in the transmission system are designed to meet infinite life. But, under abuse condition, it undergo overloads in both torsional and bending modes and finally, weak part in the entire system tend to fail first. This paper represents the failure analysis of one such an incident happened in output shaft under abuse test condition. Failure mode was confirmed as torsional overload using Stereo microscope and SEM. Application stress and shear strength of the shaft was calculated and found overstressing was the cause of failure. To avoid recurrence of breakage, improvement options were identified and subjected to static torsional test to quantify the improvement level.
