Transient Characteristics of Torque Converter-Its Effect on Acceleration Performance of Auto-Trans. Equipped Vehicles

In previous studies(1)(2), the acceleration performance of vehicles equipped with torque converter has been analysed with the assumption that the converter characteristic was under continued steady-state. However, in case of sharp acceleration of the fluid flow in the converter from inactive flow condition, which would occur at wide-open throttle starting, it is not possible to accurately analyse the vehicle performance at immediately after starting if the converter characteristic is assumed to remain under steady-state condition. In this paper, the transient phenomenon in the converter is verified by applying the theory of angular momentum and the concept of energy balance through the converter elements providing with a dynamic-model for the driveline. The present study has clarified the effect of the transient converter characteristic, at sharp starting, on the acceleration performance.

The Influence of Tire Deformation on Ride Comfort of a Truck

When truck tires have a deformation such as radial runout, flat spot, and abnormal wear as a result of panic braking, they affect vehicle vibration in the form of displacement input whose spectrum involves higher order terms of tire revolution. While a truck has vibration modes of frame bending as well as pitching and unsprung-mass viberation in the input frequency range, the tire displacement input induces vehicle vibration as a combination of these modes. Results of calculations and experiments of a 4x2 medium-duty truck are analyzed and an example of means for improving ride comfort is described in this paper.

Sound Quality Evaluation of Passenger Vehicle Interior Noise

Objective measures to evaluate sound quality are important for proper sound design and noise improvement. In this paper, the objective measures of interior noise of passenger vehicle, which is operated at constant engine revolution speed, are discussed. Subjective evaluation test of the interior noise was done using the semantic differential method. By applying factor analysts to the subjective evaluation scores, three important factors of the sound quality were extracted, i.e. comfortable, powerful and booming factors. Each factor was correlated with various physical values, for example octave band levels. Furthermore, the data is analyzed by multiple linear regression analysis with stepwise variable selection, of the each factor scores against the various physical values. Finally, an objective measure to evaluate each of these factors was conducted using the combination of simple physical values. Each of these measures was good correlation with each of the subjective evaluations.

Reduction of Cooling Fan Noise Caused by Crankshaft Torsional Vibration

Improvements of interior and exterior noise are important targets in vehicle engineering. There are many reports concerning the reduction of radiator cooling fan noise. But, most of those reports are associated with studies of air flow noise. A radiator cooling fan connected to a crankshaft occasionally radiates structure-borne noise in addition to air flow noise. This structure-borne noise is caused by fan blade vibration excited by torsional vibration of a crankshaft. In this paper, we surveyed the mechanism of the structure-borne noise and discussed some methods for the noise reduction. And, as a result, we developed one of the noise reduction technique aiming at isolation of crankshaft vibration by modifying viscosity of the oil in a fan clutch.

Reduction in Arousal Level of a Driver

One of the leading causes of traffic accidents is the reduction of driver's arousal level. Only a driver with an appropriate arousal level can drive an automobile properly. The purpose of this research is to find the possibility of quantifying the reduction of this arousal level. Two methods are used to quantify the reduction in arousal level: one is related to the driver's behavior, and the other is related to his physiological status. The characteristics of controlling the steering wheel are used as indicators of the driver's behavior, which represents the status of information processing in the brain. The variation of heart rate is used as an indicator of physiological status, which could directly represent arousal level related to drowsiness. Eight male and two female drivers participate both in on-the-road tests for the characteristics of controlling the steering wheel and in a test with a driving simulator for the heart rate variation.

Prediction of Occupant's Thermal Sensation under the Transient Environment in a Vehicle Compartment

New numerical simulation system and experimental evaluation system has been developed to predict and evaluate occupant's thermal sensation in a passenger compartment in which environment is not steady and not uniform. Transitional effective temperature, which is new index of thermal sensation, is proposed and verified to correspond with subjects' thermal sensation votes. The simulation system has two advantage beside the prediction of thermal sensation; automatic generation of a computational model and coupling analysis of temperature including an analysis of temperature distribution inside a cabin, refrigerating cycle, solar radiation, and so on. It was verified that this system well predicts occupant's thermal sensation in a short time.

Prediction Method of Cooling System Performance

This paper describes a method of predicting cooling performance in order to obtain the optimum design of the cooling system and front-end shape in the early stage of car development. This method consists of four calculation parts: thermal load on the cooling system, air flow through the engine compartment, heat dissipation by the heat exchangers and temperature distribution within the cooling system. It outputs the coolant, engine oil, automatic transmission fluid (A.T.F.) and charge air temperatures in exchange for the input of several car, power plant, drive train, exterior shape and cooling system specifications. For the calculations, in addition to theoretical formulas, several experimental formulas are introduced. This method verification is shown by presenting a few test cases for the respective calculation parts and the final solution.

New systems or functionalities have been rapidly introduced for fuel economy improvement. Active vibration suppression has also been introduced. Control algorithm is required to be verified in real time environment to develop controller functionality in a short term. Required frequency domain property concept is proposed for representation of target phenomena with reduced models. It is shown how to select or reduce engine, transmission and vehicle model based on the concept. Engine torque profile which has harmonics of engine rotation is required for engine start, take-off from stand still, noise & vibration suppression and misfire detection for OBD simulation. An engine model which generates torque profile synchronous to crank angle was introduced and modified for real time simulation environment where load changes dynamically. Selected models and control algorithms were modified for real time environment and implemented into two linked universal controllers.

Four Wheel Steering System for Medium-Duty Trucks

From the standpoint of safety, the demands are growing in recent years for better controllability and stability of automobiles and in particular in trucks. The truck, however, when compared with the passenger car, is subject to larger changes in gross vehicle mass and center of gravity depending on its load placement. In addition, since the cornering power generated by the truck tire per load is smaller than that generated by the passenger car tire, it is difficult to introduce significant improvements in controllability and stability simply by use of passive techniques like suspension characteristic tuning. Therefore, studies were performed on the applicability of the 4WS system, an active vehicle dynamic characteristic control technique, to a Truck as a means for solving these problems.

Energy Absorption and Load Transmission at Vehicle Frontal Collision

This paper describes the method to improve the energy absorption characteristics during the vehicle frontal collision. The method is to control the collapse phases of the members constituting the vehicle body and to increase collapse force of a member. This phase-control can be accomplished by superimposing the crest of the collapse force curve, which one member causes, on the trough of any other members'. The bulkheads installed in the members are useful. to control the phase and to increase the collapse force. Numerical analysis and experiment of a vehicle collision show that the control leads to the improvement of energy absorption characteristics and load transmission efficiency.

Effects of Shot Peening and Grinding on Gear Strength

In recent year, higher strength for truck and bus transmission gear has become necessary. For the transmission gears, carburized gears have generally been used. We have examined the effects of shot peening and grinding using a CBN grindstone on the pitting strength and the bending fatigue strength of a carburized gear, and further evaluated a material which reduces the structual anomalies produced during carburization. As a result, it has been found that shot peening or CBN grinding is more effective for improving both pitting strength and bending fatigue strength than improving the material composition. Therefore, it is evident that residual compressive stress caused by shot peening or CBN grinding suppresses the propagation of cracks.

Effect of the Right-and-left Torque Vectoring System in Various Types of Drivetrain

This paper describes the calculative verification of the effect of the right-and-left torque vectoring system in various types of drivetrain, namely, the front wheels only, the rear wheels only, and both front and rear wheels in FWD, RWD, and AWD vehicles. The effect is evaluated by calculating the vehicle dynamics limit; maximum acceleration and cornering ability. The right-and-left vectoring torque, which is needed for expanding the vehicle dynamics limit, is also calculated. And finally, the paper evaluates the suitable wheels for which the system should be applied in each drivetrain. The application to the front wheels is more effective for FWD vehicles. On the other hand, the application to the rear wheels is more effective for RWD and AWD vehicles.

This paper concerns driver's burden for visual information processing in which his central vision is coupled with his peripheral one. A visual driving simulator was applied to the first step of the study, where driver's responses to both central and peripheral tasks were simultaneously investigated. The series of test indicate that the driver's responsiveness to the central and peripheral tasks could define the whole burden for visual information processing. Therefore, it appears that the responsiveness to the peripheral vision could be more or less compromised to support the central one.

Development and Application of the Road Profile Measuring System

A high-performance road profile measuring system has developed. The measuring system consists of four laser displacement sensors and an optical speed sensor. It has the advantage of making high-accuracy measurements during a regular run, on a public road, and without any traffic restriction. The measurement is hardly affected by bouncing and pitching motions of the vehicle. The four displacement sensors are arranged at unequal intervals in the direction of vehicle. A road profile is calculated from sensor outputs. This paper describes not only the development of this unique measuring system but also its application to a vehicle behavior. Significant measurements of typical and peculiar public roads in Japan and Northern Europe by the measuring vehicle have been performed for the last few years. The features of these roads are described by the power spectrum densities and the profiles.

Control Technology off Minimal Slip-Type Torque Converter Clutch

If a torque converter clutch is allowed to slip to a minimal amount, engine torque can be transmitted through a transmission without torque variation problem, and also low fuel consumption is realized by putting the clutch in operation even at low engine revolution. Oil pressure applied to clutch is electronically feedback-controlled to keep clutch slip to a minimal amount. But this feedback system tends to become unstable by impairment of various factors of the system. This paper relates to the stability analysis of feedback system, and especially to the control method by which feedback system can be made stable even when µ-v characteristic of clutch facing material is impaired.

Control Method of Autonomous Vehicle Considering Compatibility of Riding Comfort and Vehicle Controllability

This paper describes a control strategy for autonomous vehicles in an intelligent vehicle/highway system. The control concept aims at the compatibility of passenger riding comfort and vehicle controllability. The main subject of this paper is lateral control of vehicles. In order to analyze riding comfort, we have experimented on the lateral riding comfort during a lane change. It was found that the riding comfort is mainly related to the jerk more than the acceleration, and that the trajectory pattern is important. According to the experimental results, a motion control system was designed. We found through the computer simulation and the experiment with an autonomous test vehicle that comfortable ride is realized along with system stability. Lastly, in order to apply this strategy to the longitudinal direction, we have experimented on the longitudinal acceleration with the test vehicle. The results shows that the same strategy is applicable to the longitudinal direction.

Active Control for Body Vibration of F.W.D. Car

A Vehicle Vibration Control System by Active Control has been developed. The experimental results using a 4-cylinder gasoline engine installed in a car showed that at the position of the driver's seat, the acceleration of the vibration was reduced by 16 dB. This system operates stably and at low cost because of having a feedforward system, so many applications can be expected in the near future as methods for vehicle vibration reduction.

This paper examines the anti-shudder property of automatic transmission fluid (ATF) in terms of evaluation criteria and durability. The anti-shudder property is required for precise slip control around the clutch in that kind of automatic transmission, applications which are currently increasing. To evaluate anti-shudder properties, friction characteristics are measured by modified Low Velocity Friction Apparatus (LVFA), and the data are compared with those from the actual vehicle. The analysis confirms that the occurrence of shudder on the vehicle is closely related to the ratio of the static friction coefficient to the dynamic one measured by modified LVFA.

A Study on the Effects of the Active Yaw Moment Control

This paper presents a new torque distribution system-“Right/Left Torque Control System”, aimed at improving a vehicle's cornering properties by using yaw moment control. The torque transfer mechanisms of this system have been analyzed. Also, a yaw moment control algorithm using yaw rate feedback control has been designed. Next, vehicle cornering properties were evaluated using numerical simulation developed from data taken from an actual vehicle. As a result, improvements were achieved in the maneuverability and stability of a vehicle during cornering.
