Vibration Mitigation of Commercial Vehicle Active Tandem Axle Suspension System

Abstract A tandem axle suspension is an important system to the ride comfort and vehicle stability of and road damage experience from commercial vehicles. This article introduces an investigation into the use of a controlled active tandem axle suspension, which for the first time enables more effective control using two fuzzy logic controllers (FLC). The proposed controllers compute the actuator forces based on system outputs: displacements, velocities, and accelerations of movable parts of tandem axle suspension as inputs to the controllers, in order to achieve better ride comfort and vehicle stability and extend the lifetime of road surface than the conventional passive suspension. A mathematical model of a six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) tandem axle suspension system is derived and simulated using Matlab/Simulink software.

Vehicle Stability Control through Optimized Coordination of Active Rear Steering and Differential Driving/Braking

Abstract In this article, a hierarchical coordinated control algorithm for integrating active rear steering and driving/braking force distribution (ARS+D/BFD) was presented. The upper-level control was synthesized to generate the required rear steering angle and external yaw moment by using a sliding-mode controller. In the lower-level controller, a control allocation algorithm considering driving/braking actuators and tire forces constraints was designed to assign the desired yaw moment to the four wheels. To this end, an optimization problem including several equality and inequality constraints were defined and solved analytically. Finally, computer simulation results suggest that the proposed hierarchical control scheme was able to help to achieve substantial enhancements in handling performance and stability.

Understanding Subsidies to Achieve Diesel Powertrain Financial Parity for Heavy-Duty Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

Abstract The development of a long-term sustainable hydrogen energy economy for commercial vehicle transportation will need to overcome key critical technical and logistics considerations in the near term. As compared to zero-emission powertrains, fossil-fuel-based powertrains provide mission flexibility and high uptime at a comparatively low total cost of ownership (TCO). While the incumbent carbon-intensive powertrains suffer from poor efficiency and are not sustainable to support global climate change initiatives in transportation decarbonization, techno-economic challenges continue to create complex barriers to the large-scale displacement of these with highly electrified powertrains architectures. This article specifically addresses opportunities that well-targeted subsidies would afford in achieving fuel cell electric powertrain financial parity with diesel powertrains in heavy-duty trucks (HDTs).

Two-Way Coupled CFD Approach for Predicting Gear Temperature of Oil Jet Lubricated Transmissions

Abstract This article focuses on the development of a two-way coupled methodology to predict gear temperature of oil jet lubricated transmissions using commercial software for computational fluid dynamics simulation. The proposed methodology applies an overset mesh technique to model the gear interlocking motion, multiphase of air-oil mixture, and heat transfer. Two gear pairs were used to develop and validate the methodology, an overdrive helical gear pair of a commercial vehicle transmission and a standard spur gear pair. Different oil jet lubrication methods were investigated using the proposed methodology, such as oil jet directed at the into-mesh position and at the out-of-mesh position. This investigation showed that out of mesh lubrication direction shows better cooling performance which is in well agreement with previous studies of literature.

Torque Distribution Control Strategy of Electric Wheel Loader with Multiple Drive Motors Based on Optimal Motor Efficiency

Abstract Wheel loaders are widely used in construction projects. In order to reduce pollution and energy consumption, major wheel loader manufacturers are developing electric powertrain technology. Our main research goal is to reduce the energy consumption of a pure electric loader. This study is intended to build a vehicle simulation model of a multiple drive motor electric loader. According to the common working conditions and empirical formulas of the loader, the simulation data of the electric loader are calculated. The torque distribution control strategy based on the optimal efficiency of the motor is designed for the multiple drive motor electric loader and is compared with the equal proportion distribution control and the axle load ratio distribution control through simulation analysis. The simulation results show that the proposed torque distribution control strategy based on motor optimal efficiency can reduce energy consumption by 7–12%.

Thermal Energy Performance Evaluation and Architecture Selection for Off-Highway Equipment

Abstract An accurate and rapid thermal model of an axle-brake system is crucial to the design process of reliable braking systems. Proper thermal management is necessary to avoid damaging effects, such as brake fade, thermal cracking, and lubricating oil degradation. In order to understand the thermal effects inside of a lubricated braking system, it is common to use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to calculate the heat generation and rejection. However, this is a difficult and time-consuming process, especially when trying to optimize a braking system. This article uses the results from several CFD runs to train a Stacked Ensemble Model (SEM), which allows the use of machine learning (ML) to predict the systems’ temperature based on several input design parameters. The robustness of the SEM was evaluated using uncertainty quantification.

Thermal Energy Performance Evaluation and Architecture Selection for Off-Highway Equipment

Abstract Off-highway equipment are subjected to diverse environmental conditions, severe duty cycles, and multiple simultaneous operations. Due to its continuous, high-power adverse operating conditions, equipment are exposed to high thermal loads, which result in the deterioration of its performance and efficiency. This article describes a model-based system simulation approach for thermal performance evaluation of a self-propelled off-highway vehicle. The objective of developing the simulation model including thermal fidelity is to quantify the impact of thermal loads on vehicular system/subsystems performance. This article also describes the use of simulation models for driving architectural design decisions and virtual test replication in all stages of product development.

Abstract Heavy commercial vehicles play an important role in creating the trade and economic balance of countries. Also, the durability and safety of heavy commercial vehicles come to the fore. Heavy commercial vehicles consist of two parts. These are the chassis area with the equipment that allows the vehicle to move and the cabin section where the driver is located. The cabin area is the most important area that ensures the highest level of driver safety. Considering that the production of trucks is increasing day by day, it is inevitable for companies to increase their R&D activities in the field of cabin and cabin suspension systems for much safer, durable, and comfortable trucks. This study aims to determine the safe torque value of the fasteners and their assembly sequence of the Cab Suspension Console, which is one of the most important connection parts in a truck and which can cause a fatal accident by breaking.

Suitability Study of Biofuel Blend for Light Commercial Vehicle Application under Real-World Transient Operating Conditions

Abstract Driving schedule of every vehicle involves transient operation in the form of changing engine speed and load conditions, which are relatively unchanged during steady-state conditions. As well, the results from transient conditions are more likely to reflect the reality. So, the current research article is focused on analyzing the biofuel-like lemon peel oil (LPO) behavior under real-world transient conditions with fuel injection parameter MAP developed from steady-state experiments. At first, engine parameters and response MAPs are developed by using a response surface methodology (RSM)-based multi-objective optimization technique. Then, the vehicle model has been developed by incorporating real-world transient operating conditions. Finally, the developed injection parameters and response MAPs are embedded in the vehicle model to analyze the biofuel behavior under transient operating conditions.

Stereo Vision-Based Road Debris Detection System for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

Abstract Reliable detection of obstacles around an autonomous vehicle is essential to avoid potential collision and ensure safe driving. However, a vast majority of existing systems are mainly focused on detecting large obstacles such as vehicles, pedestrians, and so on. Detection of small obstacles such as road debris, which pose a serious potential threat are often overlooked. In this article, a novel stereo vision-based road debris detection algorithm is proposed that detects debris on the road surfaces and estimates their height accurately. Moreover, a collision warning system that could warn the driver of an imminent crash by using 3D information of detected debris has been studied.

Stability Control for a Four-Wheel-Independent-Drive Electric Vehicle Based on Model Predictive Control

Abstract In four-wheel-independent-drive (4WID) electric vehicles (EVs), the torque of each wheel is independent and controllable. In this study, to address the stability problem of 4WID-EVs in the driving process, the dynamic characteristics of a 4WID-EV are analyzed and a hierarchical stability control strategy is proposed. The upper layer of the proposed control strategy takes the errors of the yaw rate and sideslip angle as inputs and uses a fuzzy control method to calculate the yaw moment of the whole vehicle. The middle layer is the torque distribution optimization control layer. Through model predictive control (MPC), vehicle stability is set to the optimization target, and the motor limit torque is used as the constraint condition. The quadratic programming (QP) method is used to find the optimal torque correction value of each wheel. The lower layer is the execution layer of the motor torque control.

Stability Analysis of Vehicle Shimmy System with Independent Suspension Based on Complexification-Averaging Method

Abstract Based on the dynamic model of a quarter-vehicle system, a three degrees-of-freedom (DOF) dynamic model of the vehicle shimmy system with independent suspension is established by applying the second Lagrange equation. Numerical examples are employed to investigate the speed range and frequency characteristic of the vehicle shimmy system, and then the influence of the vertical load of the tire on vehicle shimmy is discussed. The equilibrium equation and characteristic polynomial of the shimmy system are obtained by using the complexification-averaging (CX-A) method, and the stability of the shimmy system is analyzed based on the first approximate stability theory. Furthermore, the boundary condition of Hopf bifurcation is investigated, and the stability boundary of the suspension parameters varying with the vehicle speed is obtained. The relevant conclusions can provide technical supports for the suppression of vehicle shimmy.
