2-D CFAR Procedure of Multiple Target Detection for Automotive Radar

Abstract In Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS), the automotive radar is used to detect targets or obstacles around the vehicle. The procedure of Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) plays an important role in adaptive targets detection in noise or clutter environment. But in practical applications, the noise or clutter power is absolutely unknown and varies over the change of range, time and angle. The well-known cell averaging (CA) CFAR detector has a good detection performance in homogeneous environment but suffers from masking effect in multi-target environment. The ordered statistic (OS) CFAR is more robust in multi-target environment but needs a high computation power. Therefore, in this paper, a new two-dimension CFAR procedure based on a combination of Generalized Order Statistic (GOS) and CA CFAR named GOS-CA CFAR is proposed. Besides, the Linear Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave (LFMCW) radar simulation system is built to produce a series of rapid chirp signals.

48V Exhaust Gas Recirculation Pump: Reducing Carbon Dioxide with High-Efficiency Turbochargers without Increasing Engine-Out NOx

Abstract Regulations limiting GreenHouse Gases (GHG) from Heavy-Duty (HD) commercial vehicles in the United States (US) and European Union will phase in between the 2024 and 2030 model years. These mandates require efficiency improvements at both the engine and vehicle levels, with the most stringent reductions required in the heaviest vehicles used for long-haul applications. At the same time, a 90% reduction in oxides of nitrogen (NOx) will be required as part of new regulations from the California Air Resources Board. Any technologies applied to improve engine efficiency must therefore not come at the expense of increased NOx emissions. Research into advanced engine architectures and components has identified improved turbomachine efficiency as one of the largest potential contributors to engine efficiency improvement. However this comes at the cost of a reduced capability to drive high-pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR).

A Brief Introduction to a Novel High-Efficiency Hybrid Power System for Hybrid Electric Urban Light Commercial Vehicles

Abstract The linear engine as compared with the traditional internal combustion engine has high efficiency and low emissions, so as a new type of hybrid power unit, it is very suitable for a hybrid electric vehicle to improve energy efficiency and environmental protection performances. In this article, a novel linear engine-based hybrid power system that is primarily selected for hybrid electric urban light commercial vehicles is introduced. Furthermore, the working efficiency of the proposed hybrid power system is briefly analyzed through a validation study example, and various inherent factors affecting the working efficiency of the hybrid power system are analyzed and discussed in detail. This work can provide a reference implementation for the research on the power unit for the hybrid electric urban light commercial vehicles.

A Calculation Methodology for Predicting Exhaust Mass Flows and Exhaust Temperature Profiles for Heavy-Duty Vehicles

Abstract The predictive control of commercial vehicle energy management systems, such as vehicle thermal management or waste heat recovery (WHR) systems, are discussed on the basis of information sources from the field of environment recognition and in combination with the determination of the vehicle system condition. In this article, a mathematical method for predicting the exhaust gas mass flow and the exhaust gas temperature is presented based on driving data of a heavy-duty vehicle. The prediction refers to the conditions of the exhaust gas at the inlet of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler and at the outlet of the exhaust gas aftertreatment system (EAT). The heavy-duty vehicle was operated on the motorway to investigate the characteristic operational profile.

A Climate-Change Scorecard for United States Non-commercial Driver Education

Abstract In the United States (USA), transportation is the largest single source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, representing 27% of total GHGs emitted in 2020. Eighty-three percent of these came from road transport, and 57% from light-duty vehicles (LDVs). Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, which still form the bulk of the United States (US) fleet, struggle to meet climate change targets. Despite increasingly stringent regulatory mechanisms and technology improvements, only three US states have been able to reduce their transport emissions to the target of below 1990 levels. Fifteen states have made some headway to within 10% of their 1990 baseline. Largely, however, it appears that current strategies are not generating effective results. Current climate-change mitigation measures in road transport tend to be predominantly technological.

A Comprehensive Rule-Based Control Strategy for Automated Lane Centering System

Abstract To address the comfort and safety concerns related to driving vehicles, the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is gaining huge popularity. The general architecture of autonomous vehicles includes perception, planning, control, and actuation. This article aims mainly at the controls aspect of one of the emerging ADAS features Lane Centering System (LCS). Limitations in deploying this feature from a controls point of view include maintaining the lane center with winding curvatures, dealing with the dynamic environment, optimizing controls where the perception of lane boundaries is erroneous, and, finally, concurring with the driver’s preferences. Although some research is available on LCS controls, most works are related only to the lateral controls by actuating steering. To increase the robustness, a comprehensive control strategy that involves lateral control, as well as longitudinal control along with a novel strategy to select the mode of driving, is proposed.

A Coupling Architecture for Remotely Validating Powertrain Assemblies

Abstract Among the myriad of potential hybrid powertrain architectures, selecting the optimal for an application is a daunting task. Whenever available, computer models greatly assist in it. However, some aspects, such as pollutant emissions, are difficult to model, leaving no other option than to test. Validating plausible options before building the powertrain prototype has the potential of accelerating the vehicle development even more, doing so without shipping components around the world. This work concerns the design of a system to virtually couple—that is, avoiding physical contact—geographically distant test rigs in order to evaluate the components of a powertrain. In the past, methods have been attempted, either with or without assistance of mathematical models of the coupled components (observers). Existing methods are accurate only when the dynamics of the systems to couple are slow in relation to the communication delay.

A Data-Driven Greenhouse Gas Emission Rate Analysis for Vehicle Comparisons

Abstract The technology focus in the automotive sector has moved toward battery electric vehicles (BEVs) over the last few years. This shift has been ascribed to the importance of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transportation to mitigate the effects of climate change. In Europe, countries are proposing future bans on vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICEs), and individual United States (U.S.) states have followed suit. An important component of these complex decisions is the electricity generation GHG emission rates both for current electric grids and future electric grids. In this work we use 2019 U.S. electricity grid data to calculate the geographically and temporally resolved marginal emission rates that capture the real-world carbon emissions associated with present-day utilization of the U.S. grid for electric vehicle (EV) charging or any other electricity need.

A Decentralized Multi-agent Energy Management Strategy Based on a Look-Ahead Reinforcement Learning Approach

Abstract An energy management strategy (EMS) has an essential role in ameliorating the efficiency and lifetime of the powertrain components in a hybrid fuel cell vehicle (HFCV). The EMS of intelligent HFCVs is equipped with advanced data-driven techniques to efficiently distribute the power flow among the power sources, which have heterogeneous energetic characteristics. Decentralized EMSs provide higher modularity (plug and play) and reliability compared to the centralized data-driven strategies. Modularity is the specification that promotes the discovery of new components in a powertrain system without the need for reconfiguration. Hence, this article puts forward a decentralized reinforcement learning (Dec-RL) framework for designing an EMS in a heavy-duty HFCV. The studied powertrain is composed of two parallel fuel cell systems (FCSs) and a battery pack.

A Deep Neural Network Attack Simulation against Data Storage of Autonomous Vehicles

Abstract In the pursuit of advancing autonomous vehicles (AVs), data-driven algorithms have become pivotal in replacing human perception and decision-making. While deep neural networks (DNNs) hold promise for perception tasks, the potential for catastrophic consequences due to algorithmic flaws is concerning. A well-known incident in 2016, involving a Tesla autopilot misidentifying a white truck as a cloud, underscores the risks and security vulnerabilities. In this article, we present a novel threat model and risk assessment (TARA) analysis on AV data storage, delving into potential threats and damage scenarios. Specifically, we focus on DNN parameter manipulation attacks, evaluating their impact on three distinct algorithms for traffic sign classification and lane assist.

A Diesel Engine Ring Pack Performance Assessment

Abstract Demonstrating ring pack operation in an operating engine is very difficult, yet it is essential to optimize engine performance parameters such as blow-by, oil consumption, emissions, and wear. A significant amount of power is lost in friction between piston ring–cylinder liner interfaces if ring pack parameters are not optimized properly. Thus, along with these parameters, it is also necessary to reduce friction power loss in modern internal combustion engines as the oil film thickness formed between the piston ring and liner is vital for power loss reduction due to friction. Hence, it has also been a topic of research interest for decades. Piston and ring dynamics simulation software are used extensively for a better ring pack design. In this research work, a similar software for piston ring dynamics simulation reviews the ring pack performance of a four-cylinder diesel engine.

A Direct Yaw-Moment Control Logic for an Electric 2WD Formula SAE Using an Error-Cube Proportional Derivative Controller

Abstract A Direct Yaw-Moment Control (DYC) logic for a rear-wheel-drive electric-powered vehicle is proposed. The vehicle is a Formula SAE (FSAE) type race car, with two electric motors powering each rear wheel. Vehicle baseline balance is neutral at low speeds, for increased maneuverability, and increases understeering at high speeds (due to the aerodynamic configuration) for stability. A controller that can deal with these yaw response variations, modelling uncertainties, and vehicle nonlinear behavior at limit handling is proposed. A two-level control strategy is considered. For the upper level, yaw rate and sideslip angle are considered as feedback control variables and a cubic-error Proportional Derivative (PD) controller is proposed for the feedback control. For the lower level, a traction control algorithm is used, together with the yaw moment requirement, for torque allocation.

A Fundamental Analysis for Steady-State Operation of Linear Internal Combustion Engine-Linear Generator Integrated System

Abstract Linear internal combustion engine-linear generator integrated system (LICELGIS) is an innovative energy conversion device with the ability of converting mechanical energy into electrical energy, which allows it to be a range extender for hybrid vehicles. This article presents a fundamental analysis for the steady-state operation of the LICELGIS, concentrating on electromagnetic force and motion characteristics. Simple assumptions are made to represent ideal gases instantaneous heat release and rejection. Based on assumptions, sensitivity analysis is carried out for key factors of electromagnetic force. The theoretical velocity model in mathematics is derived from analyzing the LICELGIS theory model. It shows that fuel injection quantity and stroke length are the most sensitive factors in key parameters. The piston velocity around the top dead center (TDC) changes greater than that at any other position, which is caused by the combustion process.

A Global Sensitivity Analysis Approach for Engine Friction Modeling

Abstract Mechanical friction simulations offer a valuable tool in the development of internal combustion engines for the evaluation of optimization studies in terms of time efficiency. However, system modeling and evaluation of model performance may be highly complex. A high number of interacting submodels and parameters as well as a limited model transparency contribute to uncertainties in the modeling process. In particular, model calibration and validation are complicated by the unknown effect of parameters on the model output. This article presents an advanced and model-independent methodology for identifying sensitive parameters of engine friction. This allows the user to investigate an unlimited number of parameters of a model whose structure and properties are prior unknown.

A Heavy Tractor Semi-Trailer Stability Control Strategy Based on Electronic Pneumatic Braking System HIL Test

Abstract Aiming to improve the handling performance of heavy tractor semi-trailer during turning or changing lanes at high speed, a hierarchical structure controller is proposed and a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test bench of the electronic pneumatic braking system is developed to validate the proposed controller. In the upper controller, a Kalman filter observer based on the heavy tractor semi-trailer dynamic model is used to estimate the yaw rates and sideslip angles of the tractor and trailer. Simultaneously, a sliding mode direct yaw moment controller is developed, which takes the estimated yaw rates and sideslip angles and the reference values calculated by the three-degrees-of-freedom dynamic model of the heavy tractor semi-trailer as the control inputs. In the lower controller, the additional yaw moments of tractor and trailer are transformed into corresponding wheel braking forces according to the current steering characteristics.

A Literature Review of Simulation Fidelity for Autonomous-Vehicle Research and Development

Abstract This article explores the value of simulation for autonomous-vehicle research and development. There is ample research that details the effectiveness of simulation for training humans to fly and drive. Unfortunately, the same is not true for simulations used to train and test artificial intelligence (AI) that enables autonomous vehicles to fly and drive without humans. Research has shown that simulation “fidelity” is the most influential factor affecting training yield, but psychological fidelity is a widely accepted definition that does not apply to AI because it describes how well simulations engage various cognitive functions of human operators. Therefore, this investigation reviewed the literature that was published between January 2010 and May 2022 on the topic of simulation fidelity to understand how researchers are defining and measuring simulation fidelity as applied to training AI.

A Method for Turbocharging Single-Cylinder, Four-Stroke Engines

Abstract Turbocharging can provide a low cost means for increasing the power output and fuel economy of an internal combustion engine. Currently, turbocharging is common in multi-cylinder engines, but due to the inconsistent nature of intake air flow, it is not commonly used in single-cylinder engines. In this article, we propose a novel method for turbocharging single-cylinder, four-stroke engines. Our method adds an air capacitor-an additional volume in series with the intake manifold, between the turbocharger compressor and the engine intake-to buffer the output from the turbocharger compressor and deliver pressurized air during the intake stroke. We analyzed the theoretical feasibility of air capacitor-based turbocharging for a single-cylinder engine, focusing on fill time, optimal volume, density gain, and thermal effects due to adiabatic compression of the intake air.

A Pedal Map Setting Method for Considering the Controllability of Vehicle Speed

Abstract To solve the problem that it is difficult for drivers to control the vehicle at low speed, a new setting scheme of pedal map is proposed to ensure that the vehicle has the speed controllability in the full speed range. In this scheme, based on obtaining the maximum and minimum driving characteristics of the vehicle and the driving resistance characteristics of the vehicle, the pedal map is divided into a sensitive area and insensitive area. In the insensitive area, acceleration hysteresis is formed, which ensures that the throttle is slightly fluctuated and has good speed stability. At the same time, the sensitive area of the accelerator pedal is formed far away from the driving resistance curve to ensure that the vehicle has a great acceleration ability. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, the data of a commercial vehicle is selected for the design of the pedal map, and the driver-vehicle closed-loop test based on the driving simulator is conducted.

A Practical Fail-Operational Steering Concept

Abstract Automated vehicles require some level of subsystem redundancy, whether to allow a transition time for driver re-engagement (L3) or continued operation in a faulted state (L4+). Highly automated vehicle developers need to have safe miles accumulated by vehicles to assess system maturity and experience new environments. This article presents a conceptual framework suggesting that hardware newly available to commercial vehicle application can be used to form a steering system that will remain operational upon a failure. The key points of a provisional safety case are presented, giving hope that a complete safety case is possible. This article will provide autonomous vehicle developers a view of a near term possibility for a highly automated commercial vehicle steering solution.

A Real-Time-Capable Simulation Model for Off-Highway Applications Considering Soft Soil

Abstract This article describes the real-time simulation of a tire model for the off-highway sector. The off-highway area is characterized by soft surfaces. The additional deformation of the ground can result in more complex interactions between the tires and ground than in the on-highway area. The basics for these relationships are explained using normal and shear stress models. Aspects such as elastic tires, sinking due to slip, and multipass are also described. It is explained how soft soil modeling is used by a height field model to calculate the deformations of the soil and the resulting tire forces. Particular emphasis is placed on the calculation time and the numerical stability. The implementation in an existing real-time-capable vehicle model is described, which is important to provide a comprehensive simulation solution. During the validation it could be shown that the implemented height field can correctly map the soft soil properties.
