A New Generation Lean Gasoline Engine for Premium Vehicle CO2 Reduction

In an era of rapidly increasing vehicle electrification, the gasoline engine remains a vital part of the passenger car powertrain portfolio. Lean-burn combustion is a formidable means for reducing the CO2 emissions of gasoline engines but demands the use of sophisticated emissions control. A 2.0 litre turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine has been developed with a lean homogeneous combustion system matched to a robust lean and stoichiometric-capable exhaust aftertreatment. The aftertreatment system includes an SCR system and a GPF with filtration down to 10 nm particle size. The engine is equipped with a continuously variable valve-lift system, high-tumble ports and a high-energy ignition system; the boosting system comprises a variable geometry turbocharger and a 48 V electrical supercharger. The work reported formed part of the PaREGEn (Particle Reduced, Efficient Gasoline Engines) project under the Horizon 2020 framework programme.

A New Turboexpansion Concept in a Twin-Charged Engine System

Engines equipped with pressure charging systems are more prone to knock partly due the increased intake temperature. Meanwhile, turbocharged engines when operating at high engine speeds and loads cannot fully utilize the exhaust energy as the wastegate is opened to prevent overboost. The turboexpansion concept thus is conceived to reduce the intake temperature by utilizing some otherwise unexploited exhaust energy. This concept can be applied to any turbocharged engines equipped with both a compressor and a turbine-like expander on the intake loop. The turbocharging system is designed to achieve maximum utilization of the exhaust energy, from which the intake charge is over-boosted. After the intercooler, the turbine-like expander expands the over-compressed intake charge to the required plenum pressure and reduces its temperature whilst recovering some energy through the connection to the crankshaft.

A Percipient Analysis of Jaguar I-PACE Electric Vehicle Energy Consumption Using Big Data Analytics

Vehicle efficiency and range, along with the DC charging speed, are deemed as the most important criteria for an electric vehicle currently. The electric vehicle energy consumption is impacted by the change in temperature along with the driving style and average speed of a customer, all other factors being constant. Hence understanding the patterns and impact of different aspects of an EV range & charging speed is crucial in delivering an electric vehicle with robust efficiency across all weather conditions. In this paper we have analysed vehicle parameters of global Jaguar I-PACE customer data. We present and analyse the collated big data of around 50,000+ unique vehicles with a data aggregate of well over 482 million km. In moderate ambient conditions the analysis indicated a good correlation with 50th to 75th percentile drivers’ energy consumption to the EPA label figure.

A Pragmatic Model-Based Product Engineering Process

Complexity of electronics and embedded software systems in automobiles has been increasing over the years. This necessitates the need for an effective and exhaustive development and validation process in order to deliver fault free vehicles at reduced time to market. Model-based Product Engineering (MBPE) is a new process for development and validation of embedded control software. The process is generic and defines the engineering activities to plan and assess the progress and quality of the software developed for automotive applications. The MBPE process is comprised of six levels (one design level and five verification and validation levels) ranging from the vehicle requirements phase to the start of production. The process describes the work products to be delivered during the course of product development and also aligns the delivery plan to overall vehicle development milestones.

Advances in Experimental Vehicle Soiling Tests

The field of vision of the driver during wet road conditions is essential for safety at all times. Additionally, the safe use of the increasing number of sensors integrated in modern cars for autonomous driving and intelligent driver assistant systems has to be ensured even under challenging weather conditions. To fulfil these requirements during the development process of new cars, experimental and numerical investigations of vehicle soiling are performed. This paper presents the surface contamination of self- and foreign-soiling tested in the wind tunnel. For these type of tests, the fluorescence method is state-of-the-art and widely used for visualizing critical areas. In the last years, the importance of parameters like the contact angle have been identified when designing the experimental setup. In addition, new visualization techniques have been introduced.

Advances in Modelling A-Pillar Water Overflow

Driving when it is raining can be a stressful experience. Having a clear unobstructed view of the vehicles and road around you under these conditions is especially important. Heavy rain conditions can however overwhelm water management devices resulting in water rivulets flowing over the vehicle's side glass. These rivulets can significantly impair the driver's ability to see the door mirror, and laterally onto junctions. Designing water management features for vehicles is a challenging venture as testing is not normally possible until late in the design phase. Additionally traditional water management features such as grooves and channels have both undesirable design and wind noise implications. Having the ability to detect water management issues such as A-pillar overflow earlier in the design cycle is desirable to minimize the negative impact of water management features. Numerical simulation of windscreen water management is desirable for this reason.

Application of CFD to Predict Brake Disc Contamination in Wet Conditions

Brake disc materials are being utilised that have low noise/dust properties, but are sensitive to contamination by surface water. This drives large dust shields, making brake cooling increasingly difficult. However, brake cooling must be delivered without compromising aerodynamic drag and hence CO2 emissions targets. Given that front brake discs sit in a region of geometric, packaging and flow complexity optimization of their performance requires the analysis of thermal, aerodynamic and multi-phase flows. Some of the difficulties inherent in this task would be alleviated if the complete analysis could be performed in the same CAE environment: utilizing common models and the same solver technology. Hence the project described in this paper has sought to develop a CFD method that predicts the amount of contamination (water) that reaches the front brake discs, using a standard commercial code already exploited for both brake disc thermal and aerodynamics analysis.

Application of Model Predictive Control to Cabin Climate Control Leading to Increased Electric Vehicle Range

For electric vehicles (EVs), driving range is one of the major concerns for wider customer acceptance and the cabin climate system represents the most significant auxiliary load for battery consumption. Unlike internally combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, EVs cannot utilize the waste heat from an engine to heat the cabin through the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Instead, EVs use battery energy for cabin heating, this reduces the driving range. To mitigate this situation, one of the most promising solutions is to optimize the recirculation of cabin air, to minimize the energy consumed by heating the cold ambient air through the HVAC system, whilst maintaining the same level of cabin comfort. However, the development of this controller is challenging, due to the coupled, nonlinear and multi-input multi-output nature of the HVAC and thermal systems.

Aspects of Numerical Modelling of Flash-Boiling Fuel Sprays

Flash-boiling of sprays may occur when a superheated liquid is discharged into an ambient environment with lower pressure than its saturation pressure. Such conditions normally exist in direct-injection spark-ignition engines operating at low in-cylinder pressures and/or high fuel temperatures. The addition of novel high volatile additives/fuels may also promote flash-boiling. Fuel flashing plays a significant role in mixture formation by promoting faster breakup and higher fuel evaporation rates compared to non-flashing conditions. Therefore, fundamental understanding of the characteristics of flashing sprays is necessary for the development of more efficient mixture formation. The present computational work focuses on modelling flash-boiling of n-Pentane and iso-Octane sprays using a Lagrangian particle tracking technique.

Assessment of a Vehicle's Transient Aerodynamic Response

A vehicle on the road encounters an unsteady flow due to turbulence in the natural wind, due to the unsteady wakes of other vehicles and as a result of traversing through the stationary wakes of roadside obstacles. There is increasing concern about potential differences between the steady flow conditions used for development and the transient conditions that occur on the road. This paper seeks to determine if measurements made under steady state conditions can be used to predict the aerodynamic behaviour of a vehicle on road in a gusty environment. The project has included measurements in two full size wind tunnels, including using the Pininfarina TGS, steady-state and transient inlet simulations in Exa Powerflow, and a campaign of testing on-road and on-track. The particular focus of this paper is on steady wind tunnel measurements and on-road tests, representing the most established development environment and the environment experienced by the customer, respectively.

CFD Simulation of External Distribution of Tail-Pipe Emissions Around a Stationary Vehicle Under Light Tail-Wind Conditions

A potentially important, but inadequately studied, source of passengers' exposure to pollutants when a road vehicle is stationary, with an idling engine, results from the ingestion of a vehicle's own exhaust into the passenger compartment through the HVAC intake. We developed and applied a method to determine the fraction of a vehicle's exhaust entering the cabin by this route. Further the influence of three parameters: ambient tail-wind speed, vehicle ground clearance and tail pipe angle, is assessed. The study applies Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulation to the distribution of exhaust gasses around a vehicle motorized with a 2.2 liter Diesel engine. The simulation employs efficient meshing techniques and realistic loading conditions to develop a general knowledge of the distribution of the gasses in order to inform engineering design.

CFD Simulation of Side Glass Surface Noise Spectra for a Bluff SUV

Simulation of local flow structures in the A-pillar/side glass region of bluff SUV geometries, typical of Land Rover vehicles, presents a considerable challenge. Features such as relatively tight A-pillar radii and upright windscreens produce flows that are difficult to simulate. However, the usefulness of aerodynamics simulations in the early assessment of wind noise depends particularly on the local accuracy obtained in this region. This paper extends work previously published by the author(1) with additional data and analysis. An extended review of the relevant published literature is also provided. Then the degree to which a commercial Lattice-Boltzman solver (Exa PowerFLOW™) is currently able to capture both the local flow structure and surface pressure distribution (both time averaged and unsteady) is evaluated. Influential factors in the simulation are shown to be spatial resolution, turbulence and boundary layer modelling.

Characterization and Signal Inference of a NDIR Automotive Emission Analyzer Used for Dynamic Measurement

Conventional gases emission analyzers based upon non-dispersive infra-red measuring technique are of limited use in transient engine testing due to the dynamic response of these analyzers cause distortion of emission signal measured during transient engine operation. A phenomenological modelling approach is proposed which simulates the behaviour of gas transportation through an emission analyzer by a series of alternately arranged pipes and surge volumes such that the distortion of the emission signal can be physically explained and modelled. Characterization of emission analyzer using two physical models, viz diffusion and perfect gas-mixing models, is adopted as the basis for analysis so that physical interpretation can be made to account for the resulting distortion and variation of measured emission signal. The actual emission signal before distorted by the slow response emission analyzer can be inferred by solving these models numerically.

Comparing the Effect of a Swirl Flap and Asymmetric Inlet Valve Opening on a Light Duty Diesel Engine

Diesel engine designers often use swirl flaps to increase air motion in cylinder at low engine speeds, where lower piston velocities reduce natural in-cylinder swirl. Such in-cylinder motion reduces smoke and CO emissions by improved fuel-air mixing. However, swirl flaps, acting like a throttle on a gasoline engine, create an additional pressure drop in the inlet manifold and thereby increase pumping work and fuel consumption. In addition, by increasing the fuel-air mixing in cylinder the combustion duration is shortened and the combustion temperature is increased; this has the effect of increasing NOx emissions. Typically, EGR rates are correspondingly increased to mitigate this effect. Late inlet valve closure, which reduces an engine’s effective compression ratio, has been shown to provide an alternative method of reducing NOx emissions.

Comparison of Neural Network Topologies for Sensor Virtualisation in BEV Thermal Management

Energy management of battery electric vehicle (BEV) is a very important and complex multi-system optimisation problem. The thermal energy management of a BEV plays a crucial role in consistent efficiency and performance of vehicle in all weather conditions. But in order to manage the thermal management, it requires a significant number of temperature sensors throughout the car including high voltage batteries, thus increasing the cost, complexity and weight of the car. Virtual sensors can replace physical sensors with a data-driven, physical relation-driven or machine learning-based prediction approach. This paper presents a framework for the development of a neural network virtual sensor using a thermal system hardware-in-the-loop test rig as the target system. The various neural network topologies, including RNN, LSTM, GRU, and CNN, are evaluated to determine the most effective approach.

EU6c Particle Number on a Full Size SUV - Engine Out or GPF?

This paper describes the findings of a design, simulation and test study into how to reduce particulate number (Pn) emissions in order to meet EU6c legislative limits. The objective of the study was to evaluate the Pn potential of a modern 6-cylinder engine with respect to hardware and calibration when fitted to a full size SUV. Having understood this capability, to redesign the combustion system and optimise the calibration in order to meet an engineering target value of 3×1011 Pn #/km using the NEDC drive cycle. The design and simulation tasks were conducted by JLR with support from AVL. The calibration and all of the vehicle testing was conducted by AVL, in Graz. Extensive design and CFD work was conducted to refine the inlet port, piston crown and injector spray pattern in order to reduce surface wetting and improve air to fuel mixing homogeneity. The design and CFD steps are detailed along with the results compared to target.

Exhaust Emission Based Air-Fuel Ratio Model (I): Literature Reviews and Modelling

This paper presents three different methods for obtaining equivalence ratio/air-fuel ratio from the internal combustion engines. Emphasis is placed on reviewing several important air-fuel ratio models based upon the analysis of gaseous emission constituents in the exhaust of the engines as alternate to that obtained conventionally from fuel and air flow rate consumptions of the engines. A thorough analysis of all the factors that may affect the accuracy of fuel-air equivalence ratio is conducted which include the ambient conditions such as temperature and humidity, the assumed water gas reaction constant and the inclusion of oxides of nitrogen constituent in the model. A comprehensive model based upon chemical reaction of air-fuel mixture is proposed with flexible inputs of fuel type and the above factors in addition to the volume concentration inputs of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxygen and unburnt hydrocarbons.

Exhaust Emission Based Air-Fuel Ratio Model (II): Divergence Analysis and Emission Estimations

This paper claims that, instead of relying on direct fuel and air flow rate measurements, exhaust gaseous emissions analysis should be considered as the standard method for the determination of air-fuel ratio, in particular for petrol-powered engines. Various sensitivity parameters are defined and the maximum possible relative divergences of the fuel-air ratio are calculated to support the above claim. It is proved that to obtain the air-fuel ratio with the same accuracy for a petrol engine, the accuracy of the instruments used for fuel and air flow rate measurements should be at least 10 times more accurate than the emission analysers. Estimations of hydrogen and oxygen concentration based on other measurable emission concentrations in the exhaust gas stream are also conducted and validated satisfactorily with the experimental data.

Experimental and Computational Study of Vehicle Surface Contamination on a Generic Bluff Body

This paper focuses on methods used to model vehicle surface contamination arising as a result of rear wake aerodynamics. Besides being unsightly, contamination, such as self-soiling from rear tyre spray, can degrade the performance of lighting, rear view cameras and obstruct visibility through windows. In order to accurately predict likely contamination patterns, it is necessary to consider the aerodynamics and multiphase spray processes together. This paper presents an experimental and numerical (CFD) investigation of the phenomenon. The experimental study investigates contamination with controlled conditions in a wind tunnel using a generic bluff body (the Windsor model.) Contamination is represented by a water spray located beneath the rear of the vehicle.

Feedforward Control Approach for Digital Combustion Rate Shaping Realizing Predefined Combustion Processes

The aim of this research collaboration focuses on the realization of a novel Diesel combustion control strategy, known as Digital Combustion Rate Shaping (DiCoRS) for transient engine operation. Therefore, this paper presents an initial, 3D-CFD simulation based evaluation of a physical model-based feedforward controller, considered as a fundamental tool to apply real-time capable combustion rate shaping to a future engine test campaign. DiCoRS is a promising concept to improve noise, soot and HC/CO emissions in parallel, without generating drawbacks in NOx emission and combustion efficiency. Instead of controlling distinct combustion characteristics, DiCoRS aims at controlling the full combustion process and therefore represents the highest possible degree of freedom for combustion control. The manipulated variable is the full injection profile, generally consisting of multiple injection events.
