A New Approach for Process-Oriented and Tool Based Calibration Tasks for Engine Management Systems

This paper describes a new approach for the calibration of engine management systems based on a newly developed calibration tool. This approach is based on the idea to design the calibration process of a certain calibration task by means of a computer based stateflow/workflow diagram. By means of library methods for certain calibration routines, the calibration engineer can design his calibration process in a Stateflow diagram and then transfer this function in an executable file, guiding and supporting the engineer for performing his task. Due to this approach a documentation of the calibration process, the performed calibration task and a guided and automated calibration process can be performed.

The consequent means towards improved enhancement of the safety of commercial vehicles will in future times require more and more electronic intelligence, in case a distinct optimization of the systems will not be possible with conventional means. In forefront, endeavours are aimed at the improvements of the functions of the system in regard to driving safety, as well as driver stress relief at lowest possible costs, in order to increase the total cost effectiveness of commercial vehicles. Starting with currently implemented electronic systems up to systems now under development, a continuous development of standalone electronics up to integrated electronic compounding is the current trend. This trend shows advantages of reduced wiring and the number of sensors while it increases the function at the same time.

Battery Simulation

Battery simulation by a DSP-controlled high current power supply is used to improve repeatability and comparability of starting tests, especially at low temperatures. The simulator's algorithm calculates the internal resistance of the battery by a timely constant resistor and a variable resistor representing the actual discharge history. The output voltage of the simulator is set as a function of internal resistor and load current with temperature and state of charge as setup parameter. The simulator was evaluated in cold start testing in comparison to real batteries. As a result, batteries are simulated with high repeatability. Deviations to real battery behavior are in the range of test to test deviations using real batteries.

More and more applications (apps) are entering vehicles. Customers would like to have in-car apps in their infotainment system, which they already use regularly on their smartphones. Other apps with new functionalities also inspire vehicle customers, but only as long as the customer can utilize them. To ensure customer satisfaction, it is important that these apps work and that failures are found and corrected as quickly as possible. Therefore, in-car apps also implicate requirements for future vehicle diagnostics. This is because current vehicle diagnostic methods are not designed for handling dynamic software failures of apps. Consequently, new diagnostic methods are needed to support the diagnosis of in-car apps. Log data are a central building block in software systems for system health management or troubleshooting. However, there are different types of log data and log environment setups depending on the underlying system or software platform.

Engine Braking Systems and Retarders - An Overview from an European Standpoint

In particular on heavy duty commercial vehicles, the continuous braking systems “engine braking system” and “retarder”, which are independent of the service braking system, are installed to handle the continuous braking load on downhill stretches. These systems are also used to reduce lining wear and thermal loads of the service braking system. Exhaust braking systems are the most widely used form of engine braking systems. The current state-of-the-art in retarders is represented by two basic concepts, the electrodynamic retarder and the hydrodynamic retarder. A performance comparison of the different systems shows that low mountain descending speeds are the domain of engine braking systems, whereas retarders are more effective for medium and high descending speeds. The electrodynamic retarder is more favourable for lower road speeds, while the hydrodynamic retarder develops its effectiveness during higher downhill speeds.

Extended Oil Drain Intervals: Conservation of Resources or Reduction of Engine Life

Over the last 40 years it has been possible to lengthen recommended passenger car engine oil drain intervals by up to five times, despite the substantial increases in oil stress through continously rising demands on performance and environmental acceptability. Behind this considerable progress lie improvements in engine design and production technology and the development of suitable advanced engine oil formulations. With increasing oil drain intervals comes a growing uncertainty as to exactly when the oil change should best be made: a fixed mileage applicable to all vehicles is preferred for its practicality but the optimum depends on the driving history of individual vehicles. In Europe a 15000 km oil drain interval is now normal. A further extension based on a fixed interval would give an advantage to a minority of customers but could seriously compromise the durability of engines in the overall vehicle population.

Software Quality is Not a Coincidence: A Model-Based Test Case Generator

IAV GmbH is currently developing a test case generator, which uses information from Simulink®/Stateflow® models to generate test cases automatically. These test cases can then be applied during software tests for an ECU to show conformance to the original model. Using predefined rules, test cases for individual blocks are generated and converted into test cases for a whole model. The test cases can be saved as a XML file. Then, this file can be converted into test script languages which are used by tools for test execution. With the test case generator, the time-consuming and error-prone task of manual test case definition can be automated, thus decreasing test expenses for each test while increasing test quality.
