A Method for Identifying Most Significant Vehicle Parameters for Controller Performance of Autonomous Driving Functions

In this paper a method for the identification of most significant vehicle parameters influencing the behavior of a lateral control system of autonomous car is presented. Requirements for the design stage of the controller need to consider many uncertainties in the plant. While most vehicle properties can be compensated by an appropriate tuning of the control parameters, other vehicle properties can change significantly during usage. The control system is evaluated based on performance measures. Analyzed parameters comprise functional tire characteristics, mass of the vehicle and position of its center of gravity. Since the parameters are correlated, but Sobol’ sensitivity analysis assumes decorrelated inputs, random variation yields no reasonable results. Furthermore, the variation of each parameter or set of parameters is not applicable since the numbers of required simulations is increased significantly according to input dimension.

A Modular Methodology for Complete Vehicle Thermal Management Simulations

Vehicle thermal management (VTM) simulations are becoming increasingly important in the development phase of a vehicle. These simulations help in predicting the thermal profiles of critical components over a drive cycle. They are usually done using two methodologies: (1) Solving every aspect of the heat transfer, i.e., convection, radiation, and conduction, in a single solver (Conjugate Heat Transfer) or (2) Simulating convection using a fluid solver and computing the other two mechanisms using a separate thermal solver (Co-simulation). The first method is usually computationally intensive, while the second one isn’t. This is because Co-simulation reduces the load of simulating all heat transfer mechanisms in a single code. This is one of the reasons why the Co-simulation method is widely used in the automotive industry. Traditionally, the methods developed for Co-simulation processes are load case specific.

A New Approach to Model the Fan in Vehicle Thermal Management Simulations

Vehicle thermal management (VTM) simulations constitute an important step in the early development phase of a vehicle. They help in predicting the temperature profiles of critical components over a drive cycle and identify components which are exceeding temperature design limits. Parts with the highest temperatures in a vehicle with an internal combustion engine are concentrated in the engine bay area. As packaging constraints grow tighter, the components in the engine bay are packed closer together. This makes the thermal protection in the engine bay even more crucial. The fan influences the airflow into the engine bay and plays an important role in deciding flow distribution in this region. This makes modelling of the fan an important aspect of VTM simulations. The challenge associated with modelling the fan is the accurate simulation of the rotation imparted by the fan to the incoming flow. Currently, two modelling approaches are prevalent in the industry.

External Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) provides an opportunity to increase the efficiency of turbocharged spark-ignition engines. Of the competing technologies and configurations, Low-Pressure EGR (LP-EGR) is the most challenging in terms of its dynamic behavior. Only some of the stationary feasible potential can be used during dynamic engine operation. To guarantee fuel consumption-optimized engine operation with no instabilities, a load point-dependent limitation of the EGR rate or alternatively an adaptation of the operating point to the actual EGR rate is crucial. For this purpose, a precise knowledge of efficiency and combustion variance is necessary. Since the operating state includes the actual EGR rate, it has an additional dimension, which usually results in an immense measuring effort.

A Two-Measurement Correction for the Effects of a Pressure Gradient on Automotive, Open-Jet, Wind Tunnel Measurements

This paper provides a method that corrects errors induced by the empty-tunnel pressure distribution in the aerodynamic forces and moments measured on an automobile in a wind tunnel. The errors are a result of wake distortion caused by the gradient in pressure over the wake. The method is applicable to open-jet and closed-wall wind tunnels. However, the primary focus is on the open tunnel because its short test-section length commonly results in this wake interference. The work is a continuation of a previous paper [4] that treated drag only at zero yaw angle. The current paper extends the correction to the remaining forces, moments and model surface pressures at all yaw angles. It is shown that the use of a second measurement in the wind tunnel, made with a perturbed pressure distribution, provides sufficient information for an accurate correction. The perturbation in pressure distribution can be achieved by extending flaps into the collector flow.

Achieving a Scalable E/E-Architecture Using AUTOSAR and Virtualization

Today's automotive software integration is a static process. Hardware and software form a fixed package and thus hinder the integration of new electric and electronic features once the specification has been completed. Usually software components assigned to an ECU cannot be easily transferred to other devices after they have been deployed. The main reasons are high system configuration and integration complexity, although shifting functions from one to another ECU is a feature which is generally supported by AUTOSAR. The concept of a Virtual Functional Bus allows a strict separation between applications and infrastructure and avoids source code modifications. But still further tooling is needed to reconfigure the AUTOSAR Basic Software (BSW). Other challenges for AUTOSAR are mixed integrity, versioning and multi-core support. The upcoming BMW E/E-domain oriented architecture will require all these features to be scalable across all vehicle model ranges.

Assessing Low Frequency Flow Noise Based on an Experimentally Validated Modal Substructuring Strategy Featuring Non-Conforming Grids

The continuous encouragement of lightweight design in modern vehicles demands a reliable and efficient method to predict and ameliorate the interior acoustic comfort for passengers. Due to considerable psychological effects on stress and concentration, the low frequency contribution plays a vital rule regarding interior noise perception. Apart other contributors, low frequency noise can be induced by transient aerodynamic excitation and the related structural vibrations. Assessing this disturbance requires the reliable simulation of the complex multi-physical mechanisms involved, such as transient aerodynamics, structural dynamics and acoustics. The domain of structural dynamics is particularly sensitive regarding the modelling of attachments restraining the vibrational behaviour of incorporated membrane-like structures. In a later development stage, when prototypes are available, it is therefore desirable to replace or update purely numerical models with experimental data.

Assessment of Engine Cooling Performance by Measurement of Cooling Airflow Drag in Aerodynamic Wind Tunnels

In this paper we discuss a method for determining heat transfer behaviour during tests in aerodynamic wind tunnels. The method involves computing the heat power evacuated by the heat exchanger as a function of the cooling airflow drag. Using dimensional analysis techniques, we define a Thermal Efficiency Coefficient (TEC). Systematic tests on three geometrically different types of vehicles show that there is a universal law governing the variation in TEC with cooling airflow drag. By associating the curve for this universal law with the characteristic curve for the heat exchanger alone, we can compute a TEC value for a measured cooling airflow drag value, and thus determine the vehicle's engine cooling performance during aerodynamic tests.

Accident studies show that incompatibility has become the main cause of fatal injury in car-to-car accidents. There is a general agreement today that improving compatibility is one of the most effective ways to reduce the number of road accident victims. Therefore, structural car design must take into account other road users without decreasing self-protection level supplied by all new passenger cars. In addition to these safety considerations, the front unit structural design has to account for an increasing number of constraints: improvement of real-world performance in safety, fulfill current and future regulations like "CAFÉ" or pedestrian, reducing utilization costs and so on. Furthermore, European fleet is changing in mass and in size, as the world's ones, and new fashion vehicles appear different than the previous one.

Accident studies conducted during the last twenty-five years clearly show that car to car head-on collision is a major impact configuration to take into account in order to improve safety on the roads. With new self protection ratings all cars offer equivalent behaviour against a fixed obstacle. So, in the future, the main progress will have to be made in car to car compatibility. Recent studies have shown the feasibility of designing compatible cars for both structure behaviour and occupant protection. However, some requirements on front unit design could make this aim more difficult to achieve. We suggest developping a more comprehensive approach in order to better take into account all the constraints.

Handling characteristics, ride comfort and active safety are customer relevant attributes of modern premium vehicles. Electronic control units offer new possibilities to optimize vehicle performance with respect to these goals. The integration of multiple control systems, each with its own focus, leads to a high complexity. BMW and ITK Engineering have created a tool to tackle this challenge. A simulation environment to cover all development stages has been developed. Various levels of complexity are addressed by a scalable simulation model and functionality, which grows step-by-step with increasing requirements. The simulation environment ensures the coherence of the vehicle data and simulation method for development of the electronic systems. The article describes both the process of the electronic control unit (ECU) development and positive impact of an integrated tool on the entire vehicle development process.

Previous studies of in-cylinder heat transfers give numerous approaches of heat losses modelling principally compression and expansion strokes. These simulation methods are discussed showing that their accuracy during the intake stroke is neglected. Since most of the modern engines use strong structured air motion during the intake and compression strokes to both reduce consumption and reach different emissions levels targets, one may focus on in-cylinder aerodynamics and convective heat transfer coupling. The experimental velocity data acquired allow us to get an in-depth understanding of the spatial and temporal gradients of measured heat transfers in the cylinder of an internal combustion engine. Two different experimental methods have been used to investigate the in-cylinder air motion. First, near wall flow has been studied using two component local time-resolved Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA).

Increasing demand for utilities like navigation systems or user-defined electronic phonebooks on one hand and sophisticated engine and gear controls on the other hand leads to growing bus load between distributed local control units. This paper shows the benefits and the characteristics of various state of the art data-compression algorithms and their impact on typical automotive multiplex dataclasses. The evaluation and optimization of promising algorithms can be done via a proposed “communications prototyping”-approach. The hardware/software components of such a rapid prototyping package are outlined. Finally, first performance results of suitable data-compression measures are presented.

Development of a Direct Injection Spark Ignition Engine Test for Injector Fouling

Direct Injection Spark Ignition (DISI) engines are known to be sensitive to injector fouling. To evaluate the effectiveness of detergent additives and the influence of fuel parameters on injector fouling, a new DISI engine test has been developed, using a 2.0 l stoichiometric homogeneous DI engine on a test bench. Severe engine running conditions have been found to lead to a high amount of deposits on the injector nozzle over a short period of time (“one day” procedure). Injector fouling is measured using a fuel flow measurement procedure representative of injector operating conditions (opening time and pressure). This procedure has proved to be reliable and repeatable with different gasoline fuels and additives being evaluated. The influence of the base fuel and the effect of the composition and the dosages levels of detergent additives (keep-clean and clean-up properties) are demonstrated with the test method.

Over the past decades, interior noise from wind noise or engine noise have been significantly reduced by leveraging improvements of both the overall vehicle design and of sound package. Consequently, noise sources originating from HVAC systems (Heat Ventilation and Air Conditioning), fans or exhaust systems are becoming more relevant for perceived quality and passenger comfort. This study focuses on HVAC systems and discusses a Flow-Induced Noise Detection Contributions (FIND Contributions) numerical method enabling the identification of the flow-induced noise sources inside and around HVAC systems. This methodology is based on the post-processing of unsteady flow results obtained using Lattice Boltzmann based Method (LBM) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations combined with LBM-simulated Acoustic Transfer Functions (ATF) between the position of the sources inside the system and the passenger’s ears.

Dilution Interest on Turbocharged SI Engine Combustion

This paper presents a prospective combustion study about dilution effects on turbocharged SI engine at full load. It proposes a comparative analysis between lean burn and cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) operation as knock improvement artifice in substitute of enrichment. The study was led on a four cylinder 2L engine on stationary test bench. A specific EGR circuit was designed in order to achieve high control of the temperature and mass flow of the recirculated gas. Thanks to instantaneous pressure cylinder transducers, a combustion analysis was carried out using an home-made code. 1-D simulations (WAVE code) were used to complete the analysis on volumetric efficiency and turbocharger behaviour. A real advantage of cooled EGR was observed in the study compared to lean burn or enrichment in terms of performance, heat exchange and specific fuel consumption.

Energy Consumption of Electro-Hydraulic Steering Systems

The reduction of fuel consumption in vehicles remains an important target in vehicle development to meet the carbon dioxide emission reduction target. One of the significant consumers of energy in a vehicle is the hydraulic power-assisted steering system (HPS) powered by the engine belt drive. To reduce the energy consumption an electric motor can be used to drive the pump (electro-hydraulic power steering or EHPS). In this work a simulation model was developed and validated to model the energy consumption of the whole steering system. This includes an advanced friction model for the steering rack, a physically modeled steering valve, the hydraulic pump and the electric motor with the control unit. The model is used to investigate the influence of various parameters on the energy consumption for different road situations. The results identified the important parameters influencing the power consumption and showed the potential to reduce the power consumption of the system.

Equations and Methods for Testing Hydrogen Fuel Consumption using Exhaust Emissions

Although hydrogen ICE engines have existed in one sort or another for many years, the testing of fuel consumption by way of exhaust emissions is not yet a proven method. The current consumption method for gasoline- and diesel-fueled vehicles is called the Carbon-Balance method, and it works by testing the vehicle exhaust for all carbon-containing components. Through conservation of mass, the carbon that comes out as exhaust must have gone in as fuel. Just like the Carbon-Balance method for gas and diesel engines, the new Hydrogen-Balance equation works on the principle that what goes into the engine must come out as exhaust components. This allows for fuel consumption measurements without direct contact with the fuel. This means increased accuracy and simplicity. This new method requires some modifications to the testing procedures and CVS (Constant Volume Sampling) system.
