A Comparative Study on the Fuel Economy Improvement of a Natural Gas SI Engine at the Lean Burn and the Stoichiometric Operation both with EGR under the Premise of Meeting EU6 Emission Legislation

In order to further study the effects of air and EGR dilution on the fuel economy improvement of natural gas engines under the premise of meeting EU6 legislation, a comparison between stoichiometric operation with EGR and lean burn operation with and without EGR has been conducted at 1600rpm 50% and 75% load. The conversion efficiencies of the catalysts for both NOx and CH4 emissions are assumed at 90% for lean burn operation. Experiment results indicate that under the condition of meeting both NOx and CH4 predetermined engine-out emissions limits for EU6 legislation, lean operation with a small fraction of EGR dilution enables more advanced combustion phasing compared to pure lean operation, which results in much better fuel economy, thus further improvement compared to stoichiometric operation is achieved.

A Comparison of Conversion Efficiencies of Individual Hydrocarbon Species Across Pd- and Pt-Based Catalysts as a Function of Fuel-Air Ratio

Individual hydrocarbon conversion efficiencies of engine-out emissions have been measured for four different catalyst formulations (Pd-only, trimetallic, Pd/Rh, and Pt/Rh) during stoichiometric and rich operation. The measurements were carried out as a function of fuel-air equivalence ratio (Φ) using a dynamometer-controlled 1993 Ford V8 engine and capillary gas chromatography. HC conversion efficiency was examined in terms of mass conversion efficiency and also using three new definitions of catalyst conversion efficiency. The efficiencies across the four catalysts show similar trends with Φ for almost all HC species. The catalyst efficiencies for alkanes, alkenes, and aromatic species decrease as Φ increases above stoichiometric: alkane efficiencies decrease faster than alkenes which in turn decrease faster than aromatics. All efficiencies fall to zero near Φ = 1.08 except those of MTBE and acetylene, which remain near 100%.

A Hybrid Combustion Control Strategy for Heavy Duty Diesel Engines Based on the Technologies of Multi-Pulse Injections, Variable Boost Pressure and Retarded Intake Valve Closing Timing

Combustion control strategy for high efficiency and low emissions in a heavy duty (H D) diesel engine was investigated experimentally in a single cylinder test engine with a common rail fuel system, EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system, boost system and retarded intake valve closing timing actuator. For the operation loads of IMEPg (Gross Indicated Mean Effective Pressure) less than 1.1 MPa the low temperature combustion (LTC) with high rate of EGR was applied. The fuel injection modes of either single injection or multi-pulse injections, boost pressure and retarded intake valve closing timing (RIVCT) were also coupled with the engine operation condition loads for high efficiency and low emissions. A higher boost pressure played an important role in improving fuel efficiency and obtaining ultra-low soot and NOx emissions.

A Numerical Study on Combustion and Emission Characteristics of Marine Engine through Miller Cycle Coupled with EGR and Water Emulsified Fuel

The combustion in low-speed two-stroke marine diesel engines can be characterized as large spatial and temporal scales combustion. One of the most effective measures to reduce NOx emissions is to reduce the local maximum combustion temperature. In the current study, multi-dimensional numerical simulations have been conducted to explore the potential of Miller cycle, high compression ratio coupled with EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and WEF (water emulsified fuel) to improve the trade-off relationship of NOx-ISFC (indicated specific fuel consumption) in a low-speed two-stroke marine engine. The results show that the EGR ratio could be reduced combined with WEF to meet the Tier III emission regulation. The penalty on fuel consumption with EGR and WEF could be offset by Miller cycle and high geometric compression ratio.

A Simulation Study on Particle Deposition and Filtration Characteristics in Wall-Flow DPF with Inhomogeneous Wall Structure Using a Two-Dimensional Microcosmic Model

A new two-dimensional wall-flow DPF microstructure model has been developed in this paper to investigate the particle deposition distribution in DPF channels and the deep-bed filtration process of DPF. The substrate wall of the DPF having a thickness of L is divided into several layers with a uniform thickness of Δy along the cross-wall direction, and each layer has specific porosity and pore size. The pressure drop, particle deposition distribution and the dynamic deep-bed filtration process of the DPF with inhomogeneous wall structure are studied under various space velocities. Besides, the differences on DPF’s performance brought by the inhomogeneous wall structure are discussed by comparing with a homogeneous wall structure.

A Simulation Study on Particle Motion in Diesel Particulate Filter Based on Microcosmic Channel Model

As the prime after-treatment device for diesel particulate matter (PM) emission control, Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has been widely used for its high particle capture efficiency. In order to study the particle motion and deposition distributions in the DPF inlet channel, a 2-D wall flow DPF microcosmic channel model is built in this paper. The motion trajectories of particles with different sizes are investigated considering the drag force, Brownian motion, gravity and Saffman lift. The effects of the space velocity on particle motion trajectories and deposition distributions inside the inlet channel are evaluated. These results demonstrate that the particle motion trajectories are highly dependent on particle sizes and influenced by the space velocity. The effect of the Brownian motion is obvious for fine particles and suppressed when the space velocity is raised.

Achievement of Diesel Low Temperature Combustion through Higher Boost and EGR Control Coupled with Miller Cycle

Diesel engines generally tend to produce a very low level of NOx and soot through the application of Miller Cycle, which is mainly due to the low temperature combustion (LTC) atmosphere resulting from the Miller Cycle utilization. A CFD model was established and calibrated against the experimental data for a part load operation at 3000 r/min. A designed set of Miller-LTC combustion modes were analyzed. It is found that a higher boost pressure coupled with EGR can further tap the potential of Miller-LTC cycle, improving and expanding the Miller-LTC operation condition. The simulated results indicated that the variation of Miller timings can decrease the regions of high temperatures and then improve the levels and trade-off relationship of NOx and soot. The in-cylinder peak pressure and NOx emissions were increased dramatically though the problem of insufficient intake charge was resolved by the enhanced intake pressure that is equivalent to dual-stage turbo-charging.

The increasingly stringent requirements in relation to emission reduction and onboard diagnostics are pushing the Chinese automotive industry toward more innovative solutions and a rapid increase in electronic control performance. To manage the system complexity the architecture will require being well structure on hardware and software level. The paper introduces GEMS-K1 (Gasoline Engine Management System - Kit 1). GEMS-K1 is a platform being compliant with Euro IV emission regulation for gasoline engines. The application software is developed using modeling language, the code is automatically generated from the model. The driver software has a well defined structure including microcontroller abstraction layer and ECU abstraction layer. The hardware is following design rules to be robust, 100% testable and easy to manufacture. The electronic components use the latest innovation in terms of architecture and technologies.

An Assessment of the Impact of Exhaust Turbine Redesign, for Narrow VGT Operating Range, on the Performance of Diesel Engines with Assisted Turbocharger

Electrically assisted turbochargers are a promising technology for improving boost response of turbocharged engines. These systems include a turbocharger shaft mounted electric motor/generator. In the assist mode, electrical energy is applied to the turbocharger shaft via the motor function, while in the regenerative mode energy can be extracted from the shaft via the generator function, hence these systems are also referred to as regenerative electrically assisted turbochargers (REAT). REAT allows simultaneous improvement of boost response and fuel economy of boosted engines. This is achieved by optimally scheduling the electrical assist and regeneration actions. REAT also allows the exhaust turbine to operate within a narrow range of optimal vane positions relative to the unassisted variable geometry turbocharger (VGT). The ability to operate within a narrow range of VGT vane positions allows an opportunity for a more optimal turbine design for a REAT system.

Analysis on Emission Characteristics of Urban Buses Based on Remote Online Monitoring

In this study, a new system of assessment method was developed to evaluate the characteristics of urban buses based on remote online monitoring. Four types of buses, including China V emission standards diesel bus, lean-burn CNG bus, air-fuel equivalence ratio combustion CNG bus and gas-electric hybrid bus, were chosen as samples to analyze the emission characteristics of urban buses with different engine types in urban scenario. Based on the traffic conditions in Beijing, the actual emission characteristics of buses under newly-built driving conditions were analyzed. Moreover, the emission factor database of urban buses in Beijing was established to analyze the characteristics of excess emission. The research results are shown as follows. 1) Compared with other types of buses, NOX emission factor and emission rate of lean-burn CNG bus are much higher.

Application of Urea SCR to Light-Duty Diesel Vehicles

Diesel vehicles have significant advantages over their gasoline counterparts including a more efficient engine, higher fuel economy, and lower emissions of HC, CO, and CO2. However, NOx control is more difficult on a diesel because of the high O2 concentration in the exhaust, making conventional three-way catalysts ineffective. The most promising technology for continuous NOx reduction onboard diesel vehicles is Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) using aqueous urea. Recent work with urea SCR has involved aftertreatment for the 1.2L DIATA common-rail diesel engine. This engine was used in Ford's hybrid-electric vehicle, the Prodigy, which was developed under the PNGV (Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles) program. An emission control system consisting of a diesel particulate filter followed by an underbody SCR system was used successfully to meet ULEV emission standards (0.2 g/mi NOx, 0.04 g/mi particulate matter (PM)).

Brake Dynamometer Measurement of Airborne Brake Wear Debris

In order to assess the amount of airborne particulate matter (PM) attributable to vehicle disk brakes, a system was devised for collecting brake wear debris on a laboratory brake dynamometer. The brake dynamometer test hardware was enclosed and vented through a duct in which the airflow was controlled to ensure isokinetic sampling. Two brake dynamometer simulations were implemented: urban driving (low velocity, low g) and the Auto Motor und Sport (AMS, high velocity, high g). These test procedures were performed repeatedly on the brake system hardware of vehicles utilizing three different friction material types: low-metallic, semi-metallic, and non-asbestos organic (NAO). Airborne brake wear was collected on filters and via other airborne PM sampling techniques. Larger, non-airborne wear debris was collected from the wheel, below the brake, and brushed off the hardware. Considering the effect of the wheel, 50-70% of the collected wear debris was airborne PM.

Catalytic Characteristic and Application Performance of Catalyzed DPFs Coated with Various Content of Precious Metal in China

Recent toxicological and epidemiologic studies have shown that diesel emissions have been a significant toxic air contaminant. Catalyzed DPF (CDPF) not only significantly reduces the PM mass emissions (>90%), but also further promotes carrier self-regeneration and oxidize more harmful gaseous pollutants by the catalyst coated on the carrier. However, some ultrafine particles and potentially harmful gaseous pollutants, such as VOCs species, originally emitted in the vapor-phase at high plume temperature, may penetrate through the CDPF filter. Furthermore, the components and content of catalyst coated on the CDPF could influence the physicochemical properties and toxicity intensity of those escaping ultrafine particles and gaseous pollutants. In this work, (1) we investigated the influence of precious metal content as a variable parameter on the physicochemical properties and catalytic activities of the small CDPF samples.

Characteristics of Direct Injection Gasoline Spray Wall Impingement at Elevated Temperature Conditions

The direct injection gasoline spray-wall interaction was characterized inside a heated pressurized chamber using various visualization techniques, including high-speed laser-sheet macroscopic and microscopic movies up to 25,000 frames per second, shadowgraph, and doublespark particle image velocimetry. Two hollow cone high-pressure swirl injectors having different cone angles were used to inject gasoline onto a heated plate at two different impingement angles. Based on the visualization results, the overall transient spray impingement structure, fuel film formation, and preliminary droplet size and velocity were analyzed. The results show that upward spray vortex inside the spray is more obvious at elevated temperature condition, particularly for the wide-cone-angle injector, due to the vaporization of small droplets and decreased air density. Film build-up on the surface is clearly observed at both ambient and elevated temperature, especially for narrow cone spray.

Combustion Visualization and Experimental Study on Multi-Point Micro-Flame Ignited (MFI) Hybrid Lean-Burn Combustion in 4-Stroke Gasoline Engines

Lean-burn combustion is an effective method for increasing the thermal efficiency of gasoline engines fueled with stoichiometric fuel-air mixture, but leads to an unacceptable level of high cyclic variability before reaching ultra-low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions emitted from conventional gasoline engines. Multi-point micro-flame ignited (MFI) hybrid combustion was proposed to overcome this problem, and can be can be grouped into double-peak type, ramp type and trapezoid type with very low frequency of appearance. This research investigates the micro-flame ignition stages of double-peak type and ramp type MFI combustion captured by high speed photography. The results show that large flame is formed by the fast propagation of multi-point flame occurring in the central zone of the cylinder in the double-peak type. However, the multiple flame sites occur around the cylinder, and then gradually propagate and form a large flame accelerated by the independent small flame in the ramp type.

Comparison of Plasma-Catalyst and Lean NOx Catalyst for Diesel NOx Reduction

Projected NOx and fuel costs are compared for a plasma-catalyst system and an active lean NOx catalyst system. Comparisons are based on modeling of FTP cycle performance. The model uses steady state laboratory device characteristics, combined with measured vehicle exhaust data to predict NOx conversion efficiency and fuel economy penalties. The plasma system uses a proprietary catalyst downstream of a plasma discharge. The active lean NOx catalyst uses a catalyst along with addition of hydrocarbons to the exhaust. For the plasma catalyst system, NOx conversion is available over a wide temperature range. Increased electrical power improves conversion but degrades vehicle fuel economy; 10 J/L energy deposition costs roughly 3% fuel economy. Improved efficiency is also available with larger catalyst size or increased exhaust hydrocarbon content. For the active lean NOx system, NOx conversion is available only in a narrow temperature range.

Composition of Clusters Formed by Plasma Discharge in Simulated Engine Exhaust

Previously reported experiments revealed the presence of a small number of clusters or very small particles in the effluent of a nonthermal plasma reactor when treating a simulated engine exhaust mixture. These clusters are smaller than 7 nm. The quantity of clusters is orders of magnitude smaller than the particulate diesel or gasoline engine exhaust typically contains. In this report, we describe further experiments designed to determine the chemical composition of the clusters. Clusters were collected on the surface of a silicon substrate by exposing it to the effluent flow for extended time periods. The resulting deposits were analyzed by high mass resolution SIMS and by XPS. The SIMS analysis reveals NH4+, CH6N+, SO-, SO2-, SO3- and HSO4- ions. XPS reveals the presence of N and S at binding energies consistent with that of ammonium sulfate.

Deep Optimization of Catalyst Layer Composition via Data-Driven Machine Learning Approach

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) provides a promising future low carbon automotive powertrain solution. The catalyst layer (CL) is its core component which directly influences the output performance. PEMFC performance can be greatly improved by the effective optimization of CL composition. This work demonstrates a deep optimization of CL composition for improving the PEMFC performance, including the platinum (Pt) loading, Pt percentage of carbon-supported Pt and ionomer to carbon ratio of the anode and the cathode,. The simulation results by a PEMFC three-dimensional (3D) computation fluid dynamics (CFD) model coupled with the CL agglomerate model is used to train the artificial neural network (ANN) which can efficiently predict the current density under different CL composition. Squared correlation coefficient (R-square) and mean percentage error in the training set and validation set are 0.9867, 0.2635% and 0.9543, 1.1275%, respectively.

In 1999, the first generation NOx sensor from NGK Spark Plug, Co., Ltd. was commercialized for use in gasoline LNT NOx after-treatment systems [ 1 ]. Since then, as emissions regulations and OBD requirements have become more stringent, the demand for a high-accuracy NOx sensor with fast light-off has increased, particularly for diesel after-treatment systems. To meet such market demands, NGK Spark Plug, Co., Ltd. has developed, in collaboration with Ford Motor Company, a second generation NOx sensor.

Diesel Exhaust Simulator: Design and Application to Plasma Discharge Testing

A diesel fuel and air diffusion flame burner system has been designed for laboratory simulation of diesel exhaust gas. The system consists of mass flow controllers and a fuel pump, and employs several unique design and construction features. It produces particulate emissions with size, number distribution, and morphology similar to diesel exhaust. At the same time, it generates NOx emissions and HC similar to diesel. The system has been applied to test plasma discharges. Different design discharge devices have been tested, with results indicating the importance of testing devices with soot and moisture. Both packed bed reactor and flat plate dielectric barrier discharge systems remove some soot from the gas, but the designs tested are susceptible to soot fouling and related electrical failures. The burner is simple and stable, and is suitable for development and aging of plasma and catalysts systems in the laboratory environment.
