A Comparative Study on the Fuel Economy Improvement of a Natural Gas SI Engine at the Lean Burn and the Stoichiometric Operation both with EGR under the Premise of Meeting EU6 Emission Legislation

In order to further study the effects of air and EGR dilution on the fuel economy improvement of natural gas engines under the premise of meeting EU6 legislation, a comparison between stoichiometric operation with EGR and lean burn operation with and without EGR has been conducted at 1600rpm 50% and 75% load. The conversion efficiencies of the catalysts for both NOx and CH4 emissions are assumed at 90% for lean burn operation. Experiment results indicate that under the condition of meeting both NOx and CH4 predetermined engine-out emissions limits for EU6 legislation, lean operation with a small fraction of EGR dilution enables more advanced combustion phasing compared to pure lean operation, which results in much better fuel economy, thus further improvement compared to stoichiometric operation is achieved.

A Hybrid Combustion Control Strategy for Heavy Duty Diesel Engines Based on the Technologies of Multi-Pulse Injections, Variable Boost Pressure and Retarded Intake Valve Closing Timing

Combustion control strategy for high efficiency and low emissions in a heavy duty (H D) diesel engine was investigated experimentally in a single cylinder test engine with a common rail fuel system, EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system, boost system and retarded intake valve closing timing actuator. For the operation loads of IMEPg (Gross Indicated Mean Effective Pressure) less than 1.1 MPa the low temperature combustion (LTC) with high rate of EGR was applied. The fuel injection modes of either single injection or multi-pulse injections, boost pressure and retarded intake valve closing timing (RIVCT) were also coupled with the engine operation condition loads for high efficiency and low emissions. A higher boost pressure played an important role in improving fuel efficiency and obtaining ultra-low soot and NOx emissions.

A Novel Battery Impedance Model Considering Internal Temperature Gradient

Battery models are often applied to describe the dynamic characteristics of batteries and can be used to predict the state of the battery. Due to the process of charging and discharging, the battery heat generation will cause the inhomogeneity between inner battery temperature and surface temperature. In this paper, a novel battery impedance model, which takes the impact of the battery internal temperature gradient on battery impedance into account, is proposed to improve the battery model performance. Several experiments are designed and conducted for pouch typed battery to investigate the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) characteristics with the artificial temperature gradient (using a heating plate). Experimental results indicate that the battery internal temperature gradient will influence battery EIS regularly.

A Numerical Study on Combustion and Emission Characteristics of Marine Engine through Miller Cycle Coupled with EGR and Water Emulsified Fuel

The combustion in low-speed two-stroke marine diesel engines can be characterized as large spatial and temporal scales combustion. One of the most effective measures to reduce NOx emissions is to reduce the local maximum combustion temperature. In the current study, multi-dimensional numerical simulations have been conducted to explore the potential of Miller cycle, high compression ratio coupled with EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and WEF (water emulsified fuel) to improve the trade-off relationship of NOx-ISFC (indicated specific fuel consumption) in a low-speed two-stroke marine engine. The results show that the EGR ratio could be reduced combined with WEF to meet the Tier III emission regulation. The penalty on fuel consumption with EGR and WEF could be offset by Miller cycle and high geometric compression ratio.

A Rule-Based Energy Management Strategy for a Light-Duty Commercial P2 Hybrid Electric Vehicle Optimized by Dynamic Programming

An appropriate energy management strategy can further reduce the fuel consumption of P2 hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) with simple hybrid configuration and low cost. The rule-based real-time energy management strategy dominates the energy management strategies utilized in commercial HEVs, due to its robustness and low computational loads. However, its performance is sensitive to the setting of parameters and control actions. To further improve the fuel economy of a P2 HEV, the energy management strategy of the HEV has been re-designed based on the globally optimal control theory. An optimization strategy model based on the longitudinal dynamics of the vehicle and Bellman’s dynamic programming algorithm was established in this research and an optimal power split in the dual power sources including an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric machine at a given driving cycle was used as a benchmark for the development of the rule-based energy management strategy.

A Simulation Study on Particle Deposition and Filtration Characteristics in Wall-Flow DPF with Inhomogeneous Wall Structure Using a Two-Dimensional Microcosmic Model

A new two-dimensional wall-flow DPF microstructure model has been developed in this paper to investigate the particle deposition distribution in DPF channels and the deep-bed filtration process of DPF. The substrate wall of the DPF having a thickness of L is divided into several layers with a uniform thickness of Δy along the cross-wall direction, and each layer has specific porosity and pore size. The pressure drop, particle deposition distribution and the dynamic deep-bed filtration process of the DPF with inhomogeneous wall structure are studied under various space velocities. Besides, the differences on DPF’s performance brought by the inhomogeneous wall structure are discussed by comparing with a homogeneous wall structure.

A Simulation Study on Particle Motion in Diesel Particulate Filter Based on Microcosmic Channel Model

As the prime after-treatment device for diesel particulate matter (PM) emission control, Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has been widely used for its high particle capture efficiency. In order to study the particle motion and deposition distributions in the DPF inlet channel, a 2-D wall flow DPF microcosmic channel model is built in this paper. The motion trajectories of particles with different sizes are investigated considering the drag force, Brownian motion, gravity and Saffman lift. The effects of the space velocity on particle motion trajectories and deposition distributions inside the inlet channel are evaluated. These results demonstrate that the particle motion trajectories are highly dependent on particle sizes and influenced by the space velocity. The effect of the Brownian motion is obvious for fine particles and suppressed when the space velocity is raised.

A method of Speed Prediction Based on Markov Chain Theory Using Actual Driving Cycle

As a prerequisite for energy management of hybrid vehicles, the results of speed prediction can optimize the performance of vehicles and improve fuel efficiency. Energy management strategies are usually developed based on standard driving cycles, which are too generalized to show the variability of driving conditions in different time and locations. Therefore, this paper constructs a representative driving cycle based on driving data of the corresponding time and location, used as historical information for prediction. We propose a method to construct the driving cycle based on Markov chain theory before constructing the prediction model. In this paper, multiple prediction methods are compared with traditional parametric methods. The difference in prediction accuracy between multiple prediction methods under the single time scale and multiple time scale were compared, which further verified the advantages of the speed prediction method based on Markov chain theory.

Achievement of Diesel Low Temperature Combustion through Higher Boost and EGR Control Coupled with Miller Cycle

Diesel engines generally tend to produce a very low level of NOx and soot through the application of Miller Cycle, which is mainly due to the low temperature combustion (LTC) atmosphere resulting from the Miller Cycle utilization. A CFD model was established and calibrated against the experimental data for a part load operation at 3000 r/min. A designed set of Miller-LTC combustion modes were analyzed. It is found that a higher boost pressure coupled with EGR can further tap the potential of Miller-LTC cycle, improving and expanding the Miller-LTC operation condition. The simulated results indicated that the variation of Miller timings can decrease the regions of high temperatures and then improve the levels and trade-off relationship of NOx and soot. The in-cylinder peak pressure and NOx emissions were increased dramatically though the problem of insufficient intake charge was resolved by the enhanced intake pressure that is equivalent to dual-stage turbo-charging.

An Assessment of the Impact of Exhaust Turbine Redesign, for Narrow VGT Operating Range, on the Performance of Diesel Engines with Assisted Turbocharger

Electrically assisted turbochargers are a promising technology for improving boost response of turbocharged engines. These systems include a turbocharger shaft mounted electric motor/generator. In the assist mode, electrical energy is applied to the turbocharger shaft via the motor function, while in the regenerative mode energy can be extracted from the shaft via the generator function, hence these systems are also referred to as regenerative electrically assisted turbochargers (REAT). REAT allows simultaneous improvement of boost response and fuel economy of boosted engines. This is achieved by optimally scheduling the electrical assist and regeneration actions. REAT also allows the exhaust turbine to operate within a narrow range of optimal vane positions relative to the unassisted variable geometry turbocharger (VGT). The ability to operate within a narrow range of VGT vane positions allows an opportunity for a more optimal turbine design for a REAT system.

An Improved PID Controller Based on Particle Swarm Optimization for Active Control Engine Mount

Manufacturers have been encouraged to accommodate advanced downsizing technologies such as the Variable Displacement Engine (VDE) to satisfy commercial demands of comfort and stringent fuel economy. Particularly, Active control engine mounts (ACMs) notably contribute to ensuring superior effectiveness in vibration attenuation. This paper incorporates a PID controller into the active control engine mount system to attenuate the transmitted force to the body. Furthermore, integrated time absolute error (ITAE) of the transmitted force is introduced to serve as the control goal for searching better PID parameters. Then the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is adopted for the first time to optimize the PID parameters in the ACM system. Simulation results are presented for searching optimal PID parameters. In the end, experimental validation is conducted to verify the optimized PID controller.

Analytical Study on the Fuel-Saving Potentials of a Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle

The fuel-saving potential of a series hybrid electric vehicle (SHEV) was investigated in this work based on the future goals and technical roadmaps proposed by China's automobile and internal combustion engine (ICE) industry. The genetic algorithm optimization method and dynamic programming energy management strategy are used to optimize the key component parameters of a typical SHEV SUV to improve the fuel economy of the vehicle. Results showed that the fuel consumption of the vehicle would be 3.24 L / 100km in 2035, which is 37.21% less than 5.16 L / 100km in 2020, following the industries’ roadmaps. The results also indicated that the improvement of the ICE’s thermal efficiency is the main reason for the decrease of the vehicle’s fuel consumption. In addition, the improvement of working points and the reduction of energy losses of the key components also contribute to the improvement of the fuel economy.

Application of the Vortex Identification Algorithms in the Study of the Shear Layer in A 3/4 Open Jet Automotive Wind Tunnel

By means of particle image velocimetry(PIV) measurements, this paper uses vortex identification algorithms to find and analyze the coherent structures in the shear layer region of a 1:15 scaled 3/4 open jet automotive wind tunnel with a high Reynolds number(about 106), referring to SAWTC’s AAWT. The proper orthogonal decomposition(POD) is used to process the PIV experimental data to reconstruct the velocity fields. Based on the vortex identification functions, the locations of the center, the rotation direction and the radius of vortex can be computed. Furthermore, this paper uses the statistical method to study the regularities of distribution of these vortexes in a two-dimensional plane, and identify the vortex pairing process in the shear layer region. This paper also chooses different vortex identification algorithms to find the most accurate and suitable algorithms.

Assessing and Characterizing the Effect of Altitude on Fuel Economy, Particle Number and Gaseous Emissions Performance of Gasoline Vehicles under Real Driving

High altitudes have a significant effect on the real driving emissions (RDE) of vehicles due to lower pressure and insufficient oxygen concentration. In addition, type approval tests for light-duty vehicles are usually conducted at altitudes below 1000 m. In order to investigate the influence of high altitude on vehicles fuel economy and emissions, RDE tests procedure had been introduced in the China VI emission regulations. In this study, the effect of altitude on fuel economy and real road emissions of three light-duty gasoline vehicles was investigated. The results indicated that for vehicles fuel economy, fuel consumption (L/100 km) for the tested vehicles decreased while the mean exhaust temperature increased with an increase in altitudes. Compared to near sea level, the fuel consumption (L/100 km) of the tested vehicle was reduced by up to 23.28%.

Auto-ignition Characteristics of Lubricant Droplets under Hot Co-Flow Atmosphere

It has been revealed by researches that lubricant properties have a great effect on the low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) frequency in downsizing turbocharged direct-injection engines which are developed for better fuel economy. Droplets of lubricant or lubricant-gasoline mixture are considered to be the potential pre-ignition sources. Those droplets fly into the combustion chamber and ignite the gasoline-air mixture. To study lubricant droplets fundamentally, a novel set of droplet auto-ignition system is designed based on a Dibble Burner for this experiment. Influences of metallic additive contents, viscosities, lubricant diluted with gasoline and waste lubricant on the ignition delay of droplets are investigated by testing 12 groups of lubricants or lubricant-gasoline mixture. The equivalent diameter of each droplet generated by micro-syringes is around 2.1 mm. The co-flow temperature varies from 1123 K to 1223 K, and the experiments are carried out at atmospheric pressure.

Catalytic Characteristic and Application Performance of Catalyzed DPFs Coated with Various Content of Precious Metal in China

Recent toxicological and epidemiologic studies have shown that diesel emissions have been a significant toxic air contaminant. Catalyzed DPF (CDPF) not only significantly reduces the PM mass emissions (>90%), but also further promotes carrier self-regeneration and oxidize more harmful gaseous pollutants by the catalyst coated on the carrier. However, some ultrafine particles and potentially harmful gaseous pollutants, such as VOCs species, originally emitted in the vapor-phase at high plume temperature, may penetrate through the CDPF filter. Furthermore, the components and content of catalyst coated on the CDPF could influence the physicochemical properties and toxicity intensity of those escaping ultrafine particles and gaseous pollutants. In this work, (1) we investigated the influence of precious metal content as a variable parameter on the physicochemical properties and catalytic activities of the small CDPF samples.

Characteristics of Auto-Ignition for Lubricants and Lubricant/Gasoline Based on an Innovative Single Droplet Test System

Due to the advantages of low weight, low emissions and good fuel economy, downsized turbocharged gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines are widely-applied nowadays. However, Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) phenomenon observed in these engines restricts their improvement of performance. Some researchers have shown that auto-ignition of lubricant in the combustion chamber has a great effect on the LSPI frequency. To study the auto-ignition characteristics of lubricant, an innovative single droplet auto-ignition test system for lubricant and its mixture is designed and developed, with better accuracy and effectiveness. The experiments are carried out by hanging lubricant droplets on the thermocouple node under active thermo-atmosphere provided by a small “Dibble burner”. The auto-ignition process of lubricant droplets is recorded by a high-speed camera.

Characteristics of Particulates and Exhaust Gases Emissions of DI Diesel Engine Employing Common Rail Fuel System Fueled with Bio-diesel Blends

In this paper, characteristics of gas emission and particle size distribution are investigated in a common rail diesel engine fueled with biodiesel blends. Gas emission and particle size distribution are measured by AVL FTIR - SESAM and SMPS respectively. The results show that although biodiesel blends would result in higher NOx emissions, characteristics of NOx emissions were also dependent on the engine load for waste cooking oil methyl ester. Higher blend concentration results in higher NO2 emission after two diesel oxidation catalyst s (DOC). A higher blend concentration leads to lower CO and SO2 emissions. No significant difference of Alkene emission is found among biodiesel blends. The particle size distributions of diesel exhaust aerosol consist of a nucleation mode (NM) with a peak below 50N• m and an accumulation mode with a peak above 50N • m. B100 will result in lower particulates with the absence of NM.

Chassis Dynamometer and On-Road Evaluations of Emissions from a Diesel-Electric Hybrid Bus

Recently Hybrid Electric Buses (HEBs) have been widely used in China for energy saving and emission reduction. In order to study the real road emission performance of HEBs, the emission tests of an in-use diesel-electric hybrid bus (DHEB) are evaluated both on chassis dynamometer over China City Bus Cycles (CCBC) and on-road using Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS). The DHEB is powered by electric motor alone at speed of 0~20km/h. When the speed exceeds 20km/h, engine gets engaged rapidly and then works corporately with the electric motor to drive the bus. For chassis dynamometer test over CCBC, emissions of NOx, particulate number, particulate mass, and THC of the DHEB are 7.68g/km, 5.88E+11#/km, 0.412mg/km, and 0.062g/km, respectively. They have all decreased greatly compared to those of the diesel bus. But the CO emission which is 3.48g/km has increased significantly. Then the Real Driving Emissions (RDE) of the DHEB are compared with the dynamometer test results.

Combined Technologies for Efficiency Improvement on a 1.0 L Turbocharged GDI Engine

The CO2 reduction request for automotive industry promotes the efforts on the engine thermal efficiency improvement. The goal of this research is to improve the thermal efficiency on an extremely downsized 3-cylinder 1.0 L turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine. Effects of compression ratio, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), valve timing and viscosity of oil on fuel economy were studied. The results show that increasing compression ratio, from 9.6 to 12, can improve fuel economy at relative low load (below 12 bar BMEP), but has a negative effect at high load due to increased knock intensity. EGR can significantly reduce the pumping loss at low load, optimize combustion phase and reduce exhaust gas temperature. Therefore, the fuel consumption is reduced at all test points. The average brake thermal efficiency (BTE) benefit percentage is 3.47% with 9.6 compression ratio and 5.33 % with 12 compression ratio.
