A Comparative Study on ESC Drive and Brake Control Based on Hierarchical Structure for Four-Wheel Hub-Motor-Driven Vehicle

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is an important measure to proactively guarantee vehicle safety. In this paper, the method of four-wheel hub-motor torque control is compared with the traditional single-wheel hydraulic brake control in ESC system. The control strategy adopts the hierarchical structure. In upper controller, the stability of the vehicle is identified by threshold method, the additional yaw moment control uses a way to get the moment including feedforward and feedback parts based on the linear quadratic regulator (LQR). The medium controller is tire slip rate control, in order to get the optimal target slip rate from the upper additional yaw moment, a method of quadratic programming to optimize the longitudinal force is proposed for each wheel. The inputs of tire state for the magic tire model is introduced so as to calculate the target slip rate from the target longitudinal force.

A Strategy to Recycle the Braking Energy of HEV with EMB

Recovering the braking energy and reusing it can significantly improve the fuel economy of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).The battery ability of recovering electricity limits the improvement of the regenerative braking performance. As one way to solve this problem, the technology of brake-by-wire can be adopted in the HEVs to use the recovery dynamically. The use of high-power electrical equipment, such as electromechanical brake (EMB), is working in the form of brake-by-wire. Due to the nature of EMB, there exists an obvious coupling relationship between the energy flow and brake force distribution. In this paper, a brake force distribution controller is proposed in HEV with EMB, which can maximize braking energy recovery, compared with the conventional distribution control without EMB. Meanwhile, an energy flow strategy working with the distribution controller is designed, which is less limited to the performance of the battery.

Adaptive Hybrid Thermostat Control Strategy for Series Hybrid Electric Vehicles

For series hybrid electric vehicles (SHEV), rule-based strategies are realistic and powerful in real-time applications. However, the previous rule-based strategy cannot strike a balance between the best fuel economy and the best battery performance while maintaining the advantages of real-time applications. In order to obtain higher efficiency and reduce battery consumption, we have developed an adaptive hybrid thermostat strategy. On the basis of maintaining the load leveling of the thermostat strategy, the threshold-changing mechanism is added to realize the adaptive adjustment of the engine starting power under different SOC conditions, so as to achieve the goal of prolonging the battery life. In addition, the more fuel-efficient emergency handling rules designed to further reduce comprehensive fuel consumption.

Assisted Steering Control for Distributed Drive Electric Vehicles Based on Combination of Driving and Braking

This paper presents a low-speed assisted steering control approach for distributed drive electric vehicles. When the vehicle is driven at low speed, the braking of the inner-rear wheel is combined with differential drive to reduce the turning radius. A hierarchical control structure has been designed to achieve comprehensive control. The upper-level controller tracks the expected yaw rate and vehicle side-slip angle through a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) algorithm. The desired yaw rate and vehicle side-slip angle are obtained according to the reference vehicle model, which can be regulated by the driver through the accelerator pedal. The lower-level controller uses a quadratic programming algorithm to distribute the yaw moment and driving moment to each wheel, aiming to minimize tire load rate variance.

Brake Guidance System for Commercial Vehicles with Coordinated Friction and Engine Brakes

Using friction brakes for long time can increase easily its temperature and lower vehicle brake performance in the downhill process. The drivers' hysteretic perception to future driving condition could mislead them to stop untimely the engine brake, and some other auxiliary braking devices are designed to increase the brake power for reduction of the friction brake torque. The decompression engine brake has complex structure and high cost, and the application of eddy current retarder or hydraulic retarder on the commercial vehicles is mainly limited to their cost and mass. In this paper, an innovative brake guidance system for commercial vehicles with coordinated friction brakes and engine brake is introduced to guide the drivers to minimize the use of the friction brakes on the downhill with consideration of future driving conditions, which is aimed at releasing the engine brake potential fully and controlling the friction brake temperature in safe range.

Co-simulation Based Hydraulic Retarder Braking Control System

Hydraulic retarder has been widely applied on military vehicles and heavy commercial vehicles because of it could provide great brake torque and has lasting working time [1]. In order to reduce driver's frequent actions in braking process and prevent hydraulic retarder system from overheating, it is need to apply constant braking torque control, this control target has a strict requirement to hydraulic control system design. Many parameters often require repeated test to determine, which increases the R&D cost and extends the research cycle. This paper tries to find a time-efficient research method of hydraulic retarder control system through studying on a heavy military vehicle hydraulic retarder system. Hydraulic retarder model is set up through test data. The hydraulic control system is built based on AMESim. Controller model is set up based on PID control. The whole vehicle brake model is built based on MATLAB/Simulink.

Design and Simulation Analysis for an Integrated Energy-Recuperation Retarder

Vehicle auxiliary braking system is very significant to the brake safety. The eddy current retarder (ECR) has a good braking performance, but the braking torque would fade under high speed domain. In the contrary, the regenerative brake (RGB) could provide a satisfied braking performance in high speed domain. However, the braking torque in low speed domain is insufficient. This paper proposed a novel concept of the integrated energy-recuperation retarder (IEER), which would take advantage of the merits of both the ECR and the RGB to have a steady braking performance in all-speed domain. The IEER integrates the structures of rotary eddy current retarder (RECR) and the RGB, both of which share a stator. Braking torque of the IEER produced by stator core and armature-windings can stack together, and therefore the IEER can provide greater braking torque than the RECR. Besides, the IEER can recover electric energy from armature-windings.

Commercial vehicle plays an important role during transportation process under the demand of high speed, convenience and efficiency. So improving active safety of commercial vehicle has become a research topic. Due to the fact that braking characteristic is the basic and most closely related to safe driving of vehicle's performances, this paper aims to improve the braking performance by researching into an integrated control method based on the mature ABS products. Firstly, a strategy which gives priority to ABS and differential yaw moment control, complementary with the hydraulic active suspension control is proposed. In comparison with ABS, the combined control of brake system and suspension system is designed not only for preventing wheels lock. But the directional control to avoid roll or spin is more focused on. Then in order to run the novel method correctly, the controlled variables and evaluation criteria are illustrated briefly.

Differential Speed Steering Control for Four-Wheel Distributed Electric Vehicle

In order to perform differential control instead of the mechanical differential and improve the steering performance of distributed electric vehicles, a two-level differential speed steering control strategy is proposed. Firstly, an upper-layer controller to track the yaw rate is designed based on PID feedback and 3-D lookup table model, which could shorten the response time and reduce the impact of model parameters mismatch. Then, in order to improve the robustness to external disturbances and parameter uncertainties, a lower-layer controller to track the wheel speed is proposed based on integral sliding mode control. Moreover, three simulations are conducted to validate the proposed strategy. The first simulation results indicate that the driving torques of the inner and outer wheels are distributed properly to avoid wheel slip. In the second simulation, when the conventional steering system fails, the proposed control strategy could avoid vehicle losing steering function.

Due to the increase of mining production and rising labor costs, manufacturers of construction and mining equipment are engaged in developing large tonnage mining truck with good dynamic performance and high transport efficiency. This paper focuses on the improvement of the dynamic performance of a 52t off-highway dump truck. According to the characteristics of its operating cycle, electric auxiliary drive system is installed in the front axle aiming at improving the utilization rate of ground adhesion. The new all-wheel drive hybrid electric system makes it possible for dump truck transports at a higher velocity. Both the conventional dump truck model and the new all-wheel drive hybrid truck model are built based on the AVL-Cruise platform. Meanwhile, under the premise of enough dynamic performance, fuel consumption can be minimized by collaborative optimization in Isight.

The hydraulic retarder used in commercial vehicles can provide hydraulic damping to generate braking torque, reducing the pressure of the braking system on the slope section and increasing the safety. In this paper, the magnetorheological fluid with fast magnetic field reflection characteristics is used to increase the response speed of the hydraulic retarder, which can effectively reduce the response time of the hydraulic retarder. In this paper, the influence of the change of circumferential magnetic field on the braking torque of the magnetorheological fluid retarder is studied.

Effect of Stator Surface Area on Braking Torque and Wall Heat Dissipation of Magnetorheological Fluid Retarder

Magnetorheological fluid (MRF) is used as the transmission medium of the hydraulic retarder. The rheological properties are regulated by changing the magnetic field to achieve accurate control of the retarder's braking torque. Under the action of the external magnetic field, the flow structure and performance of the MRF retarder will be changed in a short time. The apparent viscosity coefficient increases by several orders of magnitude, the fluidity deteriorates and the heat generated by the brake cannot be transferred through the liquid circulation, which will affect the braking torque of the retarder. Changing the surface area of the stator also has an influence on the braking torque of the retarder and the wall heat dissipation. In this study, the relationship between the braking torque of the MRF retarder and the stator surface area of the retarder was analyzed.

Fluid auxiliary braking devices can provide braking torque through hydraulic damping, fluid auxiliary braking devices can also convert vehicular inertia energy into transmission fluid heat energy during the braking, which can effectively alleviate the work pressure of the main brake. Traditional hydraulic auxiliary braking devices use transmission fluids to transmit torque, however, there is a certain lag effect during the braking. The magnetorheological fluid (MR fluid) can also be used to transmit torque because it has the advantages of controlling braking torque linearly and responding fast to the magnetic field changed. The temperature of MR fluid will increase when the vehicle is engaged in continuous braking. MR fluid temperature changes will cause a bad influence on the efficiency stability of auxiliary braking.

The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) gradually moves into the mainstream market with its excellent power and energy consumption control, and has become the research target of many researchers. The energy management strategy of plug-in hybrid vehicles is more complicated than conventional gasoline vehicles. Therefore, there are still many problems to be solved in terms of power source distribution and energy saving and emission reduction. This research proposes a new solution and realizes it through simulation optimization, which improves the energy consumption and emission problems of PHEV to a certain extent. First, on the basis that MATLAB software has completed the modeling of the key components of the vehicle, the fuzzy controller of the vehicle is established considering the principle of the joint control of the engine and the electric motor.

Parallel Thermal Management System of the Water Medium Retarder

The thermal management system of the water medium retarder using engine coolant (water and ethylene glycol) as transmission medium, omits oil-water heat exchanger in the structure. When the hydraulic retarder is operated, the valve is connected with the retarder and water pump, and then the engine coolant enters the working chamber. The kinetic energy of the vehicle is converted into internal energy of the coolant, and the heat is discharged to the external environment through the engine thermal management system. The braking torque of the water medium hydraulic retarder is determined by the water medium flow rate in the working chamber. The smaller the valve opening degree, the greater the braking torque and the faster the heating transmission fluid. Small valve opening is not conducive to the loss of heat. It will affect the normal working of the engine and hydraulic retarder.

Research and Simulation of Electro-Hydraulic Braking System Based on Integrated Master Cylinder

Analogous to a vacuum boosted system, Electro-Hydraulic Braking System (EHB) is free from engine vacuum and supplies a braking force proportional to driver input. The independence of engine vacuum makes it especially suitable to be used in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). As a key component of EHB, master cylinder is driven by the pump rather than the vacuum booster. Even if the pump fails, the cylinder can also build proper pressure. Meanwhile, in order to maintain the pedal feeling, a pedal stroke simulator is applied in the system. In this paper, aiming at decreasing the size and cost of master cylinder and providing an ideal pedal feeling without compromise of performance, a new integrated master cylinder of EHB system is designed including two parts: master cylinder and pedal stroke simulator. The key components of the integrated master cylinder are motor pump, solenoid valves and composite springs.

Research on Braking Safety of Parallel Hybrid Electric Buses on Long Downhill Based on Gradient and Speed Change

When driving in mountainous areas, vehicles often encounter long downhill sections. Due to the large mass of bus and the drum brake with poor heat dissipation effect, it is easy for bus to produce braking thermal decay in long downhill section, which makes the vehicle out of control and causes safety accidents. The braking methods of parallel hybrid electric bus include drum braking, engine braking and regenerative braking, whose torque models are established in this paper. The coasting test in Trucksim is used to verify the correctness of the engine braking torque model. Based on coupling braking torque curve with vehicle speed in different gradient, the stable speed is determined and the shift strategy is proposed. The temperature rise model of brake drum is established to analyze the temperature change of brake drum during long downhill. Then, according to the ramp data of G22 freeway, the above models are simulated.

Research on Control Strategy of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Based on Improved Dynamic Programming

Because of the long driving range and good power performance, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) have drawn much attention. And the current fuel-saving effect of PHEV still has a lot of room for improvement. The complex powertrain structure of PHEV makes the requirements for control strategy be increasing. Therefore, it is crucial to develop an efficient control strategy to ensure that the PHEV operates at optimal performance with an improved driving range. This paper establishes a mathematical model for fuel economy control of PHEV, by treating the torque distribution problem as a multi-stage decision optimization problem, and establishes a global energy management strategy based on a dynamic programming (DP) algorithm. Based on the actual physical model, this paper creatively solves the correction range of battery SOC value according to the charge and discharge power of the motor, which greatly reduces the calculation time of the DP algorithm.

Research on Driving Posture Comfort Based on Relation between Drivers' Joint Angles and Joint Torques

Driving comfort is one of the most important indexes for automobile comfort. Driving posture comfort is closely related to the drivers' joint angles and joint torques. In present research, a new method is proposed to identify the most comfortable driving posture based on studying the relation between drivers' joint angles and joint torques. In order to truly reflect a driving situation, the accurate human driving model of 50 percent of the size of Chinese male is established according to the human body database of RAMSIS firstly. Biomechanical model based on accurate human driving model is also developed to analyze and obtain dynamic equations of human driving model by employing Kane method. The joint torque-angle curves of drivers' upper and lower limbs during holding wheel or pedal operation can be obtained through dynamic simulation in the MATLAB. Through curve-fitting analysis, the minimum joint torque of a driver' limb and the optimal joint angel can be found.

Research on Regenerative Braking Control Strategy of Commercial Vehicles Considering Battery Power Status

Regenerative braking is an effective way to increase the cruising range of vehicles. In commercial vehicles with large vehicle mass, regenerative braking can be maintained in a high-power working state for a long time theoretically because of the large braking torque and long braking time. But in fact, it is often impossible to run at full power because of battery safety problems. In this paper, a control strategy is designed to maintain the maximum power operation of regenerative braking as much as possible. The maximum charging power of the battery is obtained through the battery model, and it is set as the battery limiting parameter. The regenerative braking torque and power are obtained by using the motor model. The eddy current retarder is used to absorb the excess power that the battery can't bear, and the braking torque of the eddy current retarder is calculated. Finally, mechanical braking is used to make up the insufficient braking torque.
