100 Years of Corrosion Testing—Is It Time to Move beyond the ASTM D130? The Wire Corrosion and Conductive Deposit Tests

Abstract The ASTM D130 was first issued in 1922 as a tentative standard for the detection of corrosive sulfur in gasoline. A clean copper strip was immersed in a sample of gasoline for three hours at 50°C with any corrosion or discoloration taken to indicate the presence of corrosive sulfur. Since that time, the method has undergone many revisions and has been applied to many petroleum products. Today, the ASTM D130 standard is the leading method used to determine the corrosiveness of various fuels, lubricants, and other hydrocarbon-based solutions to copper. The end-of-test strips are ranked using the ASTM Copper Strip Corrosion Standard Adjunct, a colored reproduction of copper strips characteristic of various degrees of sulfur-induced tarnish and corrosion, first introduced in 1954. This pragmatic approach to assessing potential corrosion concerns with copper hardware has served various industries well for a century.

A Centrally Managed Identity-Anonymized CAN Communication System*

Abstract Identity-Anonymized CAN (IA-CAN) protocol is a secure CAN protocol, which provides the sender authentication by inserting a secret sequence of anonymous IDs (A-IDs) shared among the communication nodes. To prevent malicious attacks from the IA-CAN protocol, a secure and robust system error recovery mechanism is required. This article presents a central management method of IA-CAN, named the IA-CAN with a global A-ID, where a gateway plays a central role in the session initiation and system error recovery. Each ECU self-diagnoses the system errors, and (if an error happens) it automatically resynchronizes its A-ID generation by acquiring the recovery information from the gateway. We prototype both a hardware version of an IA-CAN controller and a system for the IA-CAN with a global A-ID using the controller to verify our concept.

A Comparative Analysis of Metaheuristic Approaches (Genetic Algorithm/Hybridization of Genetic Algorithms and Simulated Annealing) for Planning and Scheduling Problem with Energy Aspect

Abstract This article discusses a multi-item planning and scheduling problem in a job-shop system with consideration of energy consumption. Planning is considered by a set of periods, each one is characterized by a demand, energy, and length. Scheduling is determined by the sequences of jobs on available resources. A Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem is formulated to integrate planning and scheduling, it is considered as an NP-difficult problem. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is then developed to solve the MILP, and then a hybridized approach of simulated annealing with genetic algorithm (HGASA) is presented to optimize the results. Finally, numerical results are presented and analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

A Comprehensive Data Reduction Algorithm for Automotive Multiplexing

Abstract Present-day vehicles come with a variety of new features like the pre-crash warning, the vehicle-to-vehicle communication, semi-autonomous driving systems, telematics, drive by wire. They demand very high bandwidth from in-vehicle networks. Various ECUs present inside the automotive transmits useful information via automotive multiplexing. Transmission of data in real-time achieves optimum functionality. The high bandwidth and high-speed requirement can be achieved either by using multiple buses or by implementing higher bandwidth. But, by doing so, the cost of the network as well as the complexity of the wiring increases. Another option is to implement higher layer protocol which can reduce the amount of data transferred by using data reduction (DR) techniques, thus reducing the bandwidth usage. The implementation cost is minimal as the changes are required in the software only and not in hardware.

A Distributed “Black Box” Audit Trail Design Specification for Connected and Automated Vehicle Data and Software Assurance

Abstract Automotive software is increasingly complex and critical to safe vehicle operation, and related embedded systems must remain up to date to ensure long-term system performance. Update mechanisms and data modification tools introduce opportunities for malicious actors to compromise these cyber-physical systems, and for trusted actors to mistakenly install incompatible software versions. A distributed and stratified “black box” audit trail for automotive software and data provenance is proposed to assure users, service providers, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of vehicular software integrity and reliability. The proposed black box architecture is both layered and diffuse, employing distributed hash tables (DHT), a parity system and a public blockchain to provide high resilience, assurance, scalability, and efficiency for automotive and other high-assurance systems.

A Method for Measuring In-Plane Forming Limit Curves Using 2D Digital Image Correlation

Abstract With the introduction of advanced lightweight materials with complex microstructures and behaviors, more focus is put on the accurate determination of their forming limits, and that can only be possible through experiments as the conventional theoretical models for the forming limit curve (FLC) prediction fail to perform. Despite that, CAE engineers, designers, and toolmakers still rely heavily on theoretical models due to the steep costs associated with formability testing, including mechanical setup, a large number of tests, and the cost of a stereo digital image correlation (DIC) system. The international standard ISO 12004-2:2021 recommends using a stereo DIC system for formability testing since two-dimensional (2D) DIC systems are considered incapable of producing reliable strains due to errors associated with out-of-plane motion and deformation.

A Novel Metaheuristic for Adaptive Signal Timing Optimization Considering Emergency Vehicle Preemption and Tram Priority

Abstract In this article, a novel hybrid metaheuristic based on passing vehicle search (PVS) cultural algorithm (CA) is proposed. This contribution has a twofold aim: First is to present the new hybrid PVS-CA. Second is to prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for adaptive signal timing optimization. For this, a system that can adapt efficiently to the real-time traffic situation based on priority signal control is developed. Hence, Transit Signal Priority (TSP) techniques have been used to adjust signal phasing in order to serve emergency vehicles (EVs) and manage the tram priority in a coordinated tram intersection. The system used in this study provides cyclic signal operation based on a real-time control approach, including an optimization process and a database to manage the sensor data from detectors for real-time predictions of EV and tram arrival time.

A Review on Electromagnetic Sheet Metal Forming of Continuum Sheet Metals

Abstract Electromagnetic forming (EMF) is a high-speed impulse forming process developed during the 1950s and 1960s to acquire shapes from sheet metal that could not be obtained using conventional forming techniques. In order to attain required deformation, EMF process applies high Lorentz force for a very short duration of time. Due to the ability to form aluminum and other low-formability materials, the use of EMF of sheet metal for automobile parts has been rising in recent years. This review gives an inclusive survey of historical progress in EMF of continuum sheet metals. Also, the EMF is reviewed based on analytical approach, finite element method (FEM) simulation-based approach and experimental approach, on formability of the metals.

A Virtual Calibration Strategy and Its Validation for Large-Scale Models of Multi-Sheet Self-Piercing Rivet Connections

Abstract This article presents a strategy for the virtual calibration of a large-scale model representing a self-piercing rivet (SPR) connection. The connection is formed between a stack of three AA6016-T4 aluminum sheets and one SPR. The calibration process involves material characterization, a detailed riveting process simulation, virtual joint unit tests, and the final large-scale model calibration. The virtual tests were simulated by detailed solid element FE models of the joint unit. These detailed models were validated using experimental tests, namely peeling, single-lap joint, and cross-tests. The virtual parameter calibration was compared to the experimental calibration and finally applied to component test simulations. The article contains both experiments and numerical models to characterize the mechanical behavior of the SPR connection under large deformation and failure.

An Analysis of Software Latency for a High-Speed Autonomous Race Car—A Case Study in the Indy Autonomous Challenge

Abstract Autonomous driving faces the difficulty of securing the lowest possible software execution times to allow a safe and reliable application. One critical variable for autonomous vehicles is the latency from the detection of obstacles to the final actuation response of the vehicle, especially in the case of high-speed driving. A prerequisite for autonomy software is that it enables low execution times to achieve superhuman reaction times. This article presents an in-depth analysis of a full self-driving software stack for autonomous racing. A modular software stack especially developed for high-speed autonomous driving is used and the latency of the software is analyzed in four main autonomy modules: perception, prediction, planning, and control. With the help of a trace point measurement method, it is possible to investigate the end-to-end latency and runtimes of the individual modules.

An Experimental Study on Frictional Losses of Coated Piston Rings with Symmetric and Asymmetric Geometry

Abstract An increase in the efficiency of internal combustion engines is a key challenge for engineers today. Mechanical losses contribute significantly to engine inefficiency, and the piston assembly has the largest share in these losses. Various measures are therefore taken to reduce friction between the piston and the rings against the cylinder. However, the undertaken changes most frequently generate new challenges. For instance, lowering the viscosity of the engine oil or increasing the engine load may lead to accelerated wear of the mating surfaces. In order to resolve this problem, more and more complex materials and anti-wear coatings have to be used. Furthermore, under these conditions, the shape of the ring’s sliding surface becomes more important. This article presents the results of experimental research on the influence of the geometry of the sliding surface and the use of various anti-wear coatings.

Analysis of Metal Pick-Up Formation Process within Automotive Brake Pad

Abstract Metal Pick-Up (MPU) is a problematic phenomenon in automotive disc brakes. MPU generally forms as some metal lumps on the surface of the brake pad. If brake pads have MPU, during braking they would cause grooving of the disc rotor, generating brake noise and deteriorating the performance of the brake. The previous literature has so far reported that the source of the MPU is an Fe component from a disc rotor or brake pads. However, only a few of the generation mechanisms of MPU have been proven. We investigate MPU to completely elucidate the mechanism of MPU generation by using different analyses than the previous literature. First, to find out the source of MPU generation, we focus on the chemical reaction of a certain component with wear debris during braking, and some of the verification experiments are conducted under the conditions of simulated friction interface.

Analytical Structural Stress and Stress Intensity Factor Solutions for Similar and Dissimilar Spot Welds in Cross-Tension Specimens

Abstract New analytical structural stress solutions for a rigid inclusion in a finite square thin plate with clamping edges under opening loading conditions are developed. The new solutions are used to derive new analytical structural stress and stress intensity factor solutions for similar and dissimilar spot welds in cross-tension specimens. Three-dimensional finite element analyses are conducted to obtain the stress intensity factor solutions for similar spot welds and dissimilar magnesium/steel spot welds in cross-tension specimens of equal thickness with different ratios of half-specimen width-to-weld radius. A comparison of the analytical and computational solutions indicates that the analytical stress intensity factor solutions for similar spot welds in cross-tension specimens of equal thickness are accurate for large ratios of half-specimen width-to-weld radius.

Application of Taguchi-Based Grey System for Multi Aspects Optimization on Wire Electric Discharge Machining of Aluminum-Graphene Nanoplatelets Composites

Abstract Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite (AMMC) materials have loftier individualities and are known as an alternative material for a range of aerospace and automotive engineering applications. Reinforcement inclusion makes the components tougher, resulting in low performance of machining by traditional conservative machining practices. The present study presents a detailed review of the machinability of AMMC (Pure Aluminum + Graphene nanoplatelets) using Wire Electric Discharge Machining (WEDM). For WEDM of AMMC, a multi-objective optimization method is proposed to evaluate possible machining parameters in order to achieve better machining efficiency. Taguchi’s approach to the design of experiments is used to organize the experiments. For performing experiments, an L27 orthogonal array was selected. Five input process variables were considered for this study. The Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) is used to achieve the best features of multi-performance machining.

Application of Topology Optimization to Reduce Automotive Exhaust Emissions

Abstract In automotive, the use of heavy structure leads to high consumptions of fuel and resulting high exhaust (CO2) emissions. To curb this problem, nowadays, the conventional steel used for years in automotive structures is currently replaced with other different lightweight materials such as aluminum, magnesium, glass fiber-reinforced polymer, carbon fiber-reinforced polymer, titanium, and so on. On the other hand, compared to the known steel properties and performances, these lightweight materials offer challenging issues related to life cycle, recycling, cost, and manufacturing. But, more than sometimes, reaching the same levels of performances with materials different from steel presents huge difficulties. This represents the cause of researching strategies and techniques to optimize the material distribution and the performances of a component, saving material and consequently reducing weight.

Artificial Lightning Tests on Metal and CFRP Automotive Bodies: A Comparative Study

Abstract Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) has been used in automobiles as well as airplanes. Because of its light weight and high strength, CFRP is a good choice for making vehicle bodies lighter, which would improve fuel economy. Conventional metal bodies provide a convenient body return for electric wiring and offer good shielding against electromagnetic fields. Although CFRP is a conductor, its conductivity is much lower than that of metals. Therefore, CFRP bodies are usually not useful for electric wiring. In thunderstorms, an automotive body is considered to be a Faraday cage that protects the vehicle’s occupants from the potential harms of lightning. Before CFRP becomes widely applied to automotive bodies, its electric and electromagnetic properties need to be investigated in order to determine whether it also works as a Faraday cage against lightning. In this article, CFRP and metal body vehicles were tested under artificial lightning.

Assessing the Characterization for Multiple Cones and Cone Portions Utilizing X-Ray Diffraction in Single Point Incremental Forming

Abstract Single point incremental forming (SPIF) is a robust and new technique. In the recent research scenario, materials properties such as microstructure, micro-texture analysis, and crystal structure can be accessed through characterization non-destructive techniques, e.g., scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD is a non-destructive method for analyzing the fine structure of materials. This study explores how process variables such as wall angle, step size, feed rate, and forming speed affect the parts of large-, medium-, and small-sized truncated cones of aluminum alloy AA3003-O sheet. Several cone parts of truncated cones are used in this investigation to implement Scherrer’s method. The two primary determining factors peak height and crystallite size are assessed for additional analysis in the present research.

Assuring Vehicle Update Integrity Using Asymmetric Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and Public Key Cryptography (PKC)

Abstract Over the past forty years, the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) technology has grown in both sophistication and volume in the automotive sector, and modern vehicles may comprise hundreds of ECUs. ECUs typically communicate via a bus-based network architecture to collectively support a broad range of safety-critical capabilities, such as obstacle avoidance, lane management, and adaptive cruise control. However, this technology evolution has also brought about risks: if ECU firmware is compromised, then vehicle safety may be compromised. Recent experiments and demonstrations have shown that ECU firmware is not only poorly protected but also that compromised firmware may pose safety risks to occupants and bystanders.

Characterization of Friction Stir Processed Aluminum-Graphene Nanoplatelets Composites

Abstract The present study deals with the investigation on microstructural and mechanical properties of friction stir processed (FSPed) pure Aluminum (Al)-Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNPs) composites. Composite specimens such as castings were made by blending 0.5 wt.%, 1.0 wt.%, 1.5 wt.%, and 2.0 wt.% of GNPs in pure Al matrix using the ultrasonic-assisted stir casting technique (UASCT). Also for enhancement of mechanical properties via grain refinement the friction stir processing (FSP) has been employed, as well as mechanical properties like tensile strength and microhardness were evaluated. Moreover, the microstructural analysis were done using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) examination were also performed for inspecting the changes occurred during synthesis of the fabricated composites after FSP.

Chemical Analysis of Deposits Separated from Blocked Fuel Filters

Abstract Biodiesel was found to be the best candidate to replace diesel fuel mainly due to being renewable, biodegradable, and non-toxic and reduce greenhouse gases, which cause global warming. Nowadays, biodiesel is blended with diesel fuel in different concentrations depending on the country of usage and is used in diesel engines. Concerns about biodiesel were raised after premature fouling of fuel filters were reported before meeting their mileage requirement. Three filters from Brazil were analyzed using different techniques (Energy Dispersive X-Ray [EDX], Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy [FTIR], Thermogravimetric Analysis [TGA], Time of Flight-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry [ToF-SIMS], and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry [GC/MS]) to understand the chemical composition of the filter deposits and highlight the main compounds responsible for the blockage.
