1-D Simulation Study of Divided Exhaust Period for a Highly Downsized Turbocharged SI Engine - Scavenge Valve Optimization

Fuel efficiency and torque performance are two major challenges for highly downsized turbocharged engines. However, the inherent characteristics of the turbocharged SI engine such as negative PMEP, knock sensitivity and poor transient performance significantly limit its maximum potential. Conventional ways of improving the problems above normally concentrate solely on the engine side or turbocharger side leaving the exhaust manifold in between ignored. This paper investigates this neglected area by highlighting a novel means of gas exchange process. Divided Exhaust Period (DEP) is an alternative way of accomplishing the gas exchange process in turbocharged engines. The DEP concept engine features two exhaust valves but with separated function. The blow-down valve acts like a traditional turbocharged exhaust valve to evacuate the first portion of the exhaust gas to the turbine.

A Comparative Study of Knock Formation in Gasoline and Methanol Combustion Using a Multiple Spark Ignition Approach: An Optical Investigation

Engine knock is a major challenge that limits the achievement of higher engine efficiency by increasing the compression ratio of the engine. To address this issue, using a higher octane number fuel can be a potential solution to reduce or eliminate the propensity for knock and so obtain better engine performance. Methanol, a promising alternative fuel, can be produced from conventional and non-conventional energy resources, which can help reduce pollutant emissions. Methanol has a higher octane number than typically gasolines, which makes it a viable option for reducing knock intensity. This study compared the combustion characteristics of gasoline and methanol fuels in an optical spark-ignition engine using multiple spark plugs. The experiment was carried out on a single-cylinder four-stroke optical engine. The researchers used a customized metal liner with four circumferential spark plugs to generate multiple flame kernels inside the combustion chamber.

A Comparison of the Flow Fields Generated for Spark and Controlled Auto-ignition

Valve timing strategies aimed at producing internal exhaust gas re-circulation in a conventional spark ignition, SI, engine have recently demonstrated the ability to initiate controlled auto-ignition, CAI. Essentially the exhaust valves close early, to trap a quantity of hot exhaust gases in-cylinder, and the fresh air-fuel charge is induced late into the cylinder and then mixing takes place. As a logical first step to understanding the fluid mechanics, the effects of the standard and modified valve timings on the in-cylinder flow fields under motored conditions were investigated. Laser Doppler anemometry has been applied to an optical engine that replicates the engine geometry and different valve cam timings. The cycle averaged time history mean and RMS velocity profiles for the axial and radial velocity components in three axial planes were measured throughout the inlet and compression stroke.

A Coupled Tabulated Kinetics and Flame Propagation Model for the Simulation of Fumigated Medium Speed Dual-Fuel Engines

The present work describes the numerical modeling of medium-speed marine engines, operating in a fumigated dual-fuel mode, i.e. with the second fuel injected in the ports. This engine technology allows reducing engine-out emissions while maintaining the engine efficiency and can be fairly easily retrofitted from current diesel engines. The main premixed fuel that is added can be a low-carbon one and can additionally be of a renewable nature, thereby reducing or even completely removing the global warming impact. To fully optimize the operational parameters of such a large marine engine, computational fluid dynamics can be very helpful. Accurately describing the combustion process in such an engine is key, as the prediction of the heat release and the pollutant formation is crucial. Auto-ignition of the diesel fuel needs to be captured, followed by the combustion and flame propagation of the premixed fuel.

A Critical Review of Experimental Research on Hydrogen Fueled SI Engines

The literature on hydrogen fueled internal combustion engines is surprisingly extensive and papers have been published continuously from the 1930's up to the present day. Ghent University has been working on hydrogen engines for more than a decade. A summary of the most important findings, resulting from a literature study and the experimental work at Ghent University, is given in the present paper, to clarify some contradictory claims and ultimately to provide a comprehensive overview of the design features in which a dedicated hydrogen engine differs from traditionally fueled engines. Topics that are discussed include abnormal combustion (backfire, pre-ignition and knock), mixture formation techniques (carbureted, port injected, direct injection) and load control strategies (power output versus NOx trade-off).

A Heat Transfer Model for Low Temperature Combustion Engines

Low Temperature Combustion is a technology that enables achieving both a higher efficiency and simultaneously lower emissions of NOx and particulate matter. It is a noun for combustion regimes that operate with a lean air-fuel mixture and where the combustion occurs at a low temperature, such as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition and Partially Premixed Combustion. In this work a new model is proposed to predict the instantaneous heat flux in engines with Low Temperature Combustion. In-cylinder heat flux measurements were used to construct this model. The new model addresses two shortcomings of the existing heat transfer models already present during motored operation: the phasing of the instantaneous heat flux and the overprediction of the heat flux during the expansion phase. This was achieved by implementing the in-cylinder turbulence in the heat transfer model. The heat transfer during the combustion was taken into account by using the turbulence generated in the burned zone.

A Random Forest Algorithmic Approach to Predicting Particulate Emissions from a Highly Boosted GDI Engine

Particulate emissions from gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines continue to be a topic of substantial research interest. Forthcoming regulation both in the USA and the EU will further reduce their emission and drive innovation. Substantial research effort is spent undertaking experiments to understand, characterize, and research particle number (PN) emissions from engines and vehicles. Recent advances in computing power, data storage, and understanding of artificial intelligence algorithms now mean that these are becoming an important tool in engine research. In this work a random forest (RF) algorithm is used for the prediction of PN emissions from a highly boosted (up to 32 bar BMEP) GDI engine. Particle size, concentration, and the accumulation mode geometric standard deviation (GSD) are all predicted by the model. The results are analysed and an in depth study on parameter importance is carried out.

A hydrogen-fueled V-8 engine for city-bus application

Hydrogen is seen as one of the important energy vectors of the next century. Hydrogen as a renewable energy source, provides the potential for a sustainable development particularly in the transportation sector. Hydrogen-driven vehicles reduce both local as well as global emissions. The laboratory of transport technology (University of Gent) converted a General Motors Corporation/Crusader V-8 engine for hydrogen use. Once the engine is optimized, it will be built in a low-floor midsize hydrogen city bus for public demonstration. For a complete control of the combustion process and to increase the resistance to backfire (explosion of the air-fuel mixture in the inlet manifold), a sequential timed multipoint injection of hydrogen and an electronic management system is chosen. The results as a function of the engine parameters (ignition timing, injection timing and duration, injection pressure) are given.

Analysis of a Supercharged Gas Turbine Engine Concept and Preliminary Investigation of a Version Using Argon as the Working Fluid

The paper presents results from a study into the potential of a complex cycle gas turbine engine, originally investigated by the Ford Motor Company for truck applications in the 1960s, and updated to gauge the possible improvements by raising the efficiencies of its constituent components from the values used in period to more modern levels. To perform this investigation, firstly a spreadsheet model was constructed and the data that Ford made available in the open literature were used to validate it. The methodology used in the model was to balance the power consumed by the compressors (and the auxiliaries where applicable) with that produced by their driving turbines, and to match the thermal power in the heat exchangers with the data provided. Using the quoted lower heating value of the diesel fuel originally used, this approach led to an accuracy in the match of brake specific fuel consumption (in terms of g/kWh) to three places of decimals.

Applying Design of Experiments to Determine the Effect of Gas Properties on In-Cylinder Heat Flux in a Motored SI Engine

Models for the convective heat transfer from the combustion gases to the walls inside a spark ignition engine are an important keystone in the simulation tools which are being developed to aid engine optimization. The existing models have, however, been cited to be inaccurate for hydrogen, one of the alternative fuels currently investigated. One possible explanation for this inaccuracy is that the models do not adequately capture the effect of the gas properties. These have never been varied in a wide range because air and ‘classical’ fossil fuels have similar values, but they are significantly different in the case of hydrogen. As a first step towards a fuel independent heat transfer model, we have investigated the effect of the gas properties on the heat flux in a spark ignition engine.

Assessment of Empirical Heat Transfer Models for a CFR Engine Operated in HCCI Mode

Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines are a promising alternative to traditional spark- and compression-ignition engines, due to their high thermal efficiency and near-zero emissions of NOx and soot. Simulation software is an essential tool in the development and optimization of these engines. The heat transfer submodel used in simulation software has a large influence on the accuracy of the simulation results, due to its significant effect on the combustion. In this work several empirical heat transfer models are assessed on their ability to accurately predict the heat flux in a CFR engine during HCCI operation. Models are investigated that are developed for traditional spark- and compression-ignition engines such as those from Annand [1], Woschni [2] and Hohenberg [3] and also models developed for HCCI engines such as those from Chang et al. [4] and Hensel et al. [5].

Calibration of a TFG Sensor for Heat Flux Measurements in a S.I. Engine

In the development of internal combustion engines, measurements of the heat transfer to the cylinder walls play an important role. These measurements are necessary to provide data for building a model of the heat transfer, which can be used to further develop simulation tools for engine optimization. This research will focus on the Thin Film Gauge (TFG) heat flux sensor. This sensor consists of a platinum RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) on an insulating Macor® (ceramic) substrate. The sensor has a high frequency response (up to 100 kHz) and is small and robust. These properties make the TFG sensor adequate for measurements in the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. To use this sensor, its thermal properties - namely the temperature sensitivity coefficient and the thermal product - must be correctly calibrated. First, different calibration setups with a different temperature range are used to calibrate the temperature sensitivity coefficient of the TFG sensor.

Cold Flow Simulation of a Dual-Fuel Engine for Diesel-Natural Gas and Diesel-Methanol Fuelling Conditions

In this work, the possibility to perform a cold-flow simulation as a way to improve the accuracy of the starting conditions for a combustion simulation is examined. Specifically, a dual-fuel marine engine running on methanol/diesel and natural gas/diesel fueling conditions is investigated. Dual-fuel engines can provide a short-term solution to cope with the more stringent emission legislations in the maritime sector. Both natural gas and methanol appear to be interesting alternative fuels that can be used as main fuel in these dual-fuel engines. Nevertheless, it is observed that combustion problems occur at part load using these alternative fuels. Therefore, different methods to increase the combustion efficiency at part load are investigated. Numerical simulations prove to be very suitable hereto, as they are an efficient way to study the effect of different parameters on the combustion characteristics.

Combustion Characterization of Methanol in a Lean Burn Direct Injection Spark Ignition (DISI) Engine

Lean operation is a promising approach to increase the engine efficiency. One of the main challenges for lean-burn technology is the combustion instability. Using a high laminar burning velocity fuel such as methanol might solve that problem. The potential of lean-burn limit extension with methanol was investigated through a comparison with conventional gasoline. In this work, a direct injection turbocharged SI engine was operated at wide open throttle (WOT), with the load controlled by a lean-burn strategy. The amount of fuel was decreased (or lambda increased) until the combustion became unstable. For methanol, the lambda limit was about 1.5, higher than the lambda limit for gasoline which was only about 1.2. The brake thermal efficiency for methanol increased as lambda increased and reached its peak at ~41% in a lambda range of 1.2-1.4. Then, the efficiency decreased as lambda increased.

Combustion Studies for PFI Hydrogen IC Engines

Interest in alternative fuels is motivated by concerns for greenhouse gas accumulation, air quality, security of energy supply and of course the non-stop increasing crude oil and natural gas prices. Hydrogen usage can be a solution for these problems. Hydrogen plays the role of an energy carrier that has two major advantages: it can be generated from many sources and it is very clean in its use. One end-use technology that can handle hydrogen is the well-known internal combustion engine (ICE). However, before this technology can be put to use, it needs to be able to compete with conventionally fuelled power units. Particularly in terms of specific power output and NOX emissions, development work needs to be done. In the work described in this paper the main focus is on the combustion strategies for high efficiency and low NOx emissions. A comparison is made between lean burn and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) strategies.

Comparing Unburned Fuel Emission from a Pre-chamber Engine Operating on Alcohol Fuels using FID and FTIR Analyzers

Typical automotive emission testing systems usually employ Flame Ionization Detection (FID) analyzers to measure unburned fuel species in the exhaust, but the technique is not suitable for engines operating on alcohol fuels. The FID method is not sensitive to measuring unburned alcohol fuels due to the presence of oxygen bonds in the fuel molecule. Other techniques, such as Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), can provide accurate unburned fuel measurements with alcohol fuel. However, these techniques are expensive and are less accessible compared to FID analyzers. In this study, the unburned fuel emissions from the engine exhaust were measured simultaneously with FID and FTIR analyzers, with the engine operating on pure alcohols, which are methanol, ethanol, and n-butanol. While most previous work focuses on stoichiometric air-fuel mixtures, a wide range of lean operating conditions between global-λ 1.6 to 2.8 will be tested in this study.

Computational Assessment of Ammonia as a Fuel for Light-Duty SI Engines

To understand key practical aspects of ammonia as a fuel for internal combustion engines, three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed using CONVERGETM. A light-duty single-cylinder research engine with a geometrical compression ratio of 11.5 and a conventional pentroof combustion chamber was experimentally operated at stoichiometry. The fumigated ammonia was introduced at the intake plenum. Upon model validation, additional sensitivity analysis was performed. The combustion was modeled using a detailed chemistry solver (SAGE), and the ammonia oxidation was computed from a 38-specie and 262-reaction chemical reaction mechanism. Three different piston shapes were assessed, and it was found that the near-spark flow field associated with the piston design in combination with the tumble motion promotes faster combustion and yields enhanced engine performance.

Conceptual Model for the Start of Combustion Timing in the Range from RCCI to Conventional Dual Fuel

In the challenge to reduce CO2, NOx and PM emissions, the application of natural gas or biogas in engines is a viable approach. In heavy duty and marine, either a conventional dual fuel (CDF), or a reactivity-controlled compression ignition (RCCI) approach is feasible on existing diesel engines. In both technologies a pilot diesel injection is used to ignite the premixed natural gas. However, the influence of injection-timing and -pressure on the start of combustion timing (SOC) is opposite between both modes. For a single operating point these relations can be explained by a detailed CFD simulation, but an intuitive overall explanation is lacking. This makes it difficult to incorporate both modes into one engine application, using a single controller. In an experimental campaign by the authors, on a medium speed engine, the lowest emissions were found to be very close to the SOC corresponding to the transition from RCCI to CDF.

Control-Oriented Modelling of a Wankel Rotary Engine: A Synthesis Approach of State Space and Neural Networks

The use of Wankel rotary engines as a range extender has been recognised as an appealing method to enhance the performance of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV). They are effective alternatives to conventional reciprocating piston engines due to their considerable merits such as lightness, compactness, and higher power-to-weight ratio. However, further improvements on Wankel engines in terms of fuel economy and emissions are still needed. The objective of this work is to investigate the engine modelling methodology that is particularly suitable for the theoretical studies on Wankel engine dynamics and new control development. In this paper, control-oriented models are developed for a 225CS Wankel rotary engine produced by Advanced Innovative Engineering (AIE) UK Ltd. Through a synthesis approach that involves State Space (SS) principles and the artificial Neural Networks (NN), the Wankel engine models are derived by leveraging both first-principle knowledge and engine test data.

Cylinder to Cylinder Variation Related to Gas Injection Timing on a Dual-Fuel Engine

The natural gas/diesel dual-fuel engine is an interesting technique to reduce greenhouse gas emission. A limitation of this concept is the emission of un-combusted methane. In this study we analyzed the influence of PFI gas-injection timing on cylinder to cylinder gas-distribution, and the resulting methane emissions. This was done on a 6 cylinder HD engine test bench and in a GT-power simulation of the same engine. The main variable in all tests was the timing of the intake port gas injection, placed either before, after, or during the intake stroke. It showed that injecting outside of the intake window resulted in significant variation of the amount of trapped gaseous fuel over the 6 cylinders, having a strong impact on methane emissions. Injecting outside of the intake stroke results in gas awaiting in the intake port. Both testing and simulation made clear that as a result of this, cylinder 1 leans out and cylinder 6 enriches.
