3D Deformation and Dynamics of the Human Cadaver Abdomen under Seatbelt Loading

According to accident analysis, submarining is responsible for most of the frontal car crash AIS 3+ abdominal injuries sustained by restrained occupants. Submarining is characterized by an initial position of the lap belt on the iliac spine. During the crash, the pelvis slips under the lap belt which loads the abdomen. The order of magnitude of the abdominal deflection rate was reported by Uriot to be approximately 4 m/s. In addition, the use of active restraint devices such as pretensioners in recent cars lead to the need for the investigation of Out-Of-Position injuries. OOP is defined by an initial position of the lap belt on the abdomen instead of the pelvis resulting in a direct loading of the abdomen during pretensioning and the crash. In that case, the penetration speed of the belt into the abdomen was reported by Trosseille to be approximately 8 to 12 m/s. The aim of this study was to characterize the response of the human abdomen in submarining and OOP.

A Comparison of Sacroiliac and Pubic Rami Fracture Occurrences in Oblique Side Impact Tests on Nine Post Mortem Human Subjects

The WorldSID dummy can be equipped with both a pubic and a sacroiliac joint (S-I joint) loadcell. Although a pubic force criterion and the associated injury risk curve are currently available and used in regulation (ECE95, FMVSS214), as of today injury mechanisms, injury criteria, and injury assessment reference values are not available for the sacroiliac joint itself. The aim of this study was to investigate the sacroiliac joint injury mechanism. Three configurations were identified from full-scale car crashes conducted with the WorldSID 50th percentile male where the force passing through the pubis in all three tests was approximately 1500 N while the sacroiliac Fy / Mx peak values were 4500 N / 50 Nm, 2400 N / 130 Nm, and 5300 N / 150 Nm, respectively. These tests were reproduced using a 150 kg guided probe impacting Post Mortem Human Subjects (PMHS) at 8 m/s, 5.4 m/s and 7.5 m/s.

A New Multi-Adjustable Experimental Seat for Investigating Biomechanical Factors of Sitting Discomfort

A new experimental seat was designed to investigate sitting biomechanics. Previous literature suggested links between sitting discomfort and shear force, however, research on this topic is limited. The evaluation of sitting discomfort derived from past research has been primarily associated with seat pressure distribution. The key innovative feature of the experimental seat is not only pressure distribution evaluation but shear forces as well. The seat pan of the experimental seat compromises of a matrix of 52 cylinders, each equipped with a tri-axial force sensor, enabling us to measure both normal and tangential forces. The position of each cylinder is also adjustable permitting a uniform pressure distribution underneath the soft tissue of the buttocks and thighs. Backrest, armrests, seat pan and flooring are highly adjustable and equipped with forces sensors to measure contact forces.

Abdominal Response to High-Speed Seatbelt Loading

This study was conducted to address injury risk due to high-speed loading of the abdomen by a seatbelt during the pretension phase. Indeed, a better coupling of occupants to the structure of the vehicle in frontal impact can be achieved by a strong pretension of the lap belt. However, out of position considerations have to be taken into account in the development of pretension systems. In particular, when the lap belt is on the abdomen instead of the pelvis at the time of pretension, the penetration of the belt into the abdomen should not lead to injuries. Given the sensitivity of pyrotechnic pre-tensioners to the resistance that they encounter, it is important to have an understanding of the behaviors of both human and dummy abdomens in order to evaluate injury risk. These data are indispensable for the evaluation, with dummy tests, of the effects of pre-tensioners on occupants and for the estimation of the levels of injury risk.

Abdominal Twin Pressure Sensors for the Assessment of Abdominal Injuries in Q Dummies: In-Dummy Evaluation and Performance in Accident Reconstructions

The Abdominal Pressure Twin Sensors (APTS) for Q3 and Q6 dummies are composed of soft polyurethane bladders filled with fluid and equipped with pressure sensors. Implanted within the abdominal insert of child dummies, they can be used to detect abdominal loading due to the belt during frontal collisions. In the present study - which is part of the EC funded CASPER project - two versions of APTS (V1 and V2) were evaluated in abdominal belt compression tests, torso flexion test (V1 only) and two series of sled tests with degraded restraint conditions. The results suggest that the two versions have similar responses, and that the pressure sensitivity to torso flexion is limited. The APTS ability to detect abdominal loading in sled tests was also confirmed, with peak pressures typically below 1 bar when the belt loaded only the pelvis and the thorax (appropriate restraint) and values above that level when the abdomen was loaded directly (inappropriate restraint).

Assessment of Several THOR Thoracic Injury Criteria based on a New Post Mortem Human Subject Test Series and Recommendations

Several studies, available in the literature, were conducted to establish the most relevant criterion for predicting the thoracic injury risk on the THOR dummy. The criteria, such as the maximum deflection or a combination of parameters including the difference between the chest right and left deflections, were all developed based on given samples of Post Mortem Human Subject (PMHS). However, they were not validated against independent data and they are not always consistent with the observations from field data analysis. For this reason, 8 additional PMHS and matching THOR tests were carried out to assess the ability of the criteria to predict risks. Accident investigations showed that a reduction of the belt loads reduces the risk of rib fractures. Two configurations with different levels of force limitation were therefore chosen. A configuration representing an average European vehicle was chosen as a reference.

Assessment of the Pubic Force as a Pelvic Injury Criterion in Side Impact

In the literature, injuries at the ischio or ilio pubic ramus level are reported to occur to approximately ¾ of the occupants injured at the pelvis during side impact. Assuming that the load going through the pubis was a good indicator of the ramus stress, the pubic force was widely accepted as a protection criterion for pelvic fractures on side impact dummies. However, no data regarding the actual loads going through the pubis is currently available in the literature for Post Mortem Human Subjects (PMHS) in dynamic conditions. The goal of this study was to determine pelvic biofidelity specifications in terms of load path, to evaluate the pertinence of the pubic force as a criterion, and to develop a pelvic injury risk curve as a function of the pubic force. For that purpose, a pubic load cell was developed for PMHS use, and 16 side impact tests were performed on 8 PMHS using boundary conditions similar to impactor tests and sled tests reported in the literature.

Biomechanical Response and Physical Properties of the Leg, Foot, and Ankle

The anatomical dimensions, inertial properties, and mechanical responses of cadaver leg, foot, and ankle specimens were evaluated relative to those of human volunteers and current anthropometric test devices. Dummy designs tested included the Hybrid III, Hybrid III with soft joint stops, ALEX I, and the GM/FTSS lower limbs. Static and dynamic tests of the leg, foot, and ankle were conducted at the laboratories of the Renault Biomedical Research Department and the University of Virginia. The inertial and geometric properties of the dummy lower limbs were measured and compared with cadaver properties and published volunteer values. Compression tests of the leg were performed using static and dynamic loading to determine compliance of the foot and ankle. Quasi-static rotational properties for dorsiflexion and inversion/eversion motion were obtained for the dummy, cadaver, and volunteer joints of the hindfoot.

CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM FOR CHILDREN IN CARS – CREST RESULTS

Child restraint systems (CRS) for cars are intended to protect children in the case of a car accident. Unfortunately their effectiveness is still too low: in the range 30–50 % when it would be expected to be much higher. The low effectiveness of child restraint systems can partly be explained for the youngest passengers by their greater cervical vulnerability and for the oldest (from 3 to 12 years old) by the morphological immaturity of the pelvis. However, tools available to evaluate the effectiveness of CRS are very poor, as well as knowledge on injury mechanisms and criteria. The CREST project was created to develop the knowledge on child behaviour and tolerances, the final aim being to propose new test procedures for determining the effectiveness of CRS using instrumented child dummies. Eleven partners were involved, namely Fiat Auto-SpA (with Elasis), INRETS, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Renault, TNO Automotive, TUB, RICE, BAST, GDV, MUH, VTI.

Characterization of PMHS Ribs: A New Test Methodology

This paper presents the results of structural tests to investigate, first, the relationships between geometric and constitutive characteristics of ribs and, second, their mechanical behavior and rupture threshold. A new methodology was developed that included tests on complete isolated ribs. These tests simulated anterior-posterior loading, as seen in frontal impact. The 4th to 9th ribs were removed from five cadaver rib cages. The costal geometry was obtained from CT scans and was used to build a specific finite-element model for each rib tested. The test setup was composed of two caps wherein the two rib extremities were potted. One cap was fixed on the frame of the test setup through a pin joint. The second cap was fixed to a mobile truck through a pin joint. The truck allowed low friction translation along the anterior-posterior axis. Translation was imposed on the cap such that a constant displacement rate was obtained.

Comparison of the Thor, Hybrid Iii and Cadaver Lower Leg Dynamic Responses in Dorsiflexion

As of toady, statutory crash test dummies take neither bracing nor passive muscular effect into account in the lower limb area. The influence of the lower extremity musculature is however arising as a major concern for the study of front seat occupant protection. The lower extremity prototype of the THOR dummy, including a model of the human plantarflexion actuator passive response, was tested in dynamic dorsiflexion. A dynamic test series was performed on Thor-Lx under test conditions similar to those used by Portier et al., 1996, on cadavers and Hybrid III dummy. The test setup imposed a dynamic dorsiflexion to the foot by means of a load exerted under the ball of the foot with no impact velocity. The Thor-Lx and Hill responses are compared to cadaver responses. It is important to note that as of today there are no data available to demonstrate that the passive resistance of the cadaver is equivalent to resistance of a tensed human.

Comparison of the Thorax Dynamic Responses of Small Female and Midsize Male Post Mortem Human Subjects in Side and Forward Oblique Impact Tests

Despite the increasing knowledge of the thorax mechanics in impact loadings, the effects of inter-individual differences on the mechanical response are difficult to take into account. For example, the biofidelity corridors for the small female or large male are extrapolated from the midsize male corridors. The present study reports on the results of new tests performed on small female Post Mortem Human Subjects (PMHS), and compares them with test results on midsize male PMHS. Three tests in pure side impact and three tests in forward oblique impact were performed on the thorax of small female specimens. The average weight and stature were 43 kg and 1.58 m for the small female specimens. The initial speed of the impactor was 4.3 m/s. The mass and the diameter of the impactor face were respectively 23.4 kg and 130 mm. The instrumentation and methodology was the same as for the tests published in 2008 by Trosseille et al. on midsize male specimens.

Dynamic Biomechanical Dorsiflexion Responses and Tolerances of the Ankle Joint Complex

This paper presents comprehensive dorsiflexion responses and tolerances obtained from two types of dynamic tests on whole cadavers conducted at the Renault/PSA Laboratory of Accidentology and Biomechanics (LAB): sled tests and sub-system tests. In all the experiments (on whole cadavers), forces and moments within the ankle joint were accurately measured by means of a custom-designed 6-axis load cell implanted in the tibia, leaving all surrounding musculature intact. The results derived from both the sled tests and the subsystem tests are very similar. Moment-rotation curves are provided for the ankle joint. The force in the Achilles tendon which is not directly measured is calculated using the forces applied to the foot and the forces measured in the tibia.

Evaluation of Thoracic Deflection as an Injury Criterion for Side Impact Using a Finite Elements Thorax Model

This study aims to investigate the relationship between the number of rib fractures and the thoracic deflection in side impact, and in particular its variability with respect to various loading configurations. The relevance of thoracic deflection as an injury criterion depends on the existence or not of this variability. Few studies were dedicated to this issue in the literature. First, a validation database was established, which covers different impact directions (frontal, lateral and oblique), different loading types (impactor, belt and airbag), and different injury levels (from the absence of, to presence of numerous ribs fractured). The HUMOS human body model was then modified and validated versus the database. Besides the typical validation in terms of global response, particular attention was paid to validate the model with respect to the ribcage strain profile, the occurrence of rib fractures and their locations.

Experimental Investigation and Modeling of Driver's Frontal Pre-crash Postural Anticipation

This paper presents the first experiment managed within the framework of the regional French project ST2 (French acronym for Sciences and Technologies for Safety in Transports). This program aims to study human pre-crash behavior in order to improve the efficiency of passive safety protection systems. An experiment was carried out using a driving simulator of LAMIH for investigating drivers frontal pre-crash postural changes. A scenario of an unavoidable crash was designed. To increase the level of realism during the crash, a real impact was added between the windscreen and a foam rubber block in addition to a truck horn sound. Risk car driver postures just before a frontal crash have been determined. The results have shown that none of the subjects adopted the standardized driving position during the collision and 30% of the subjects adopted a position with the left hand placed in front of steering wheel which can be considered as a risk position.

Far Side Impact Injury Threshold Recommendations Based on 6 Paired WorldSID / Post Mortem Human Subjects Tests

Far side has been identified in the literature as a potential cause of numerous injuries and fatalities. Euro NCAP developed a far side test protocol to be performed to assess adult protection. A monitoring phase was undertaken between January 2018 and December 2019, and the far side assessment will become part of the rating for all vehicles launched in 2020 onward. A test buck was developed and 6 paired WorldSID / Post Mortem Human Subjects (PMHS) were subjected to the test protocol proposed by Euro NCAP to contribute to the development of limits. The buck consisted of a rigid seat and a rigid central console covered with 50 mm of Ethafoam TM 180 with a density of 16 kg/m3. The buck was mounted on the sled with an angle of 75° between the X axis of the vehicle and the X axis of the sled. The peak head excursion was compared between PMHS and the WorldSID dummy. It was found reasonably similar. However, the dummy repeatability was found to be poor.

Finite Element Simulation Study of a Frontal Driver Airbag Deployment for Out-Of-Position Situations

As more and more active restraint devices are added by vehicle manufacturers for occupant protection, the history of driver frontal airbags illustrates that the design performance of such devices for in-position (IP) occupants often have to be limited in order to reduce their aggressiveness for out-of-position (OOP) situations. As of today, a limited number of publications dealing with FE simulation of airbag deployment for OOP are available. The objective of our study was to evaluate the feasibility of airbag deployment simulations based on an extensive set of well-defined physical test matrix. A driver frontal airbag was chosen (European mid-size car sample) for this study. It was deployed against a force plate (14 tests in a total of 6 configurations), and used with Hybrid III 50th percentile dummy (HIII) in OOP tests (6 tests, 4 configurations). Special attention was paid to control the boundary conditions used in experiments in order to improve the modelling process.

In Vehicle Diver Postural Monitoring using a Depth Camera Kinect

Monitoring driver’s postures has extensive applications. The postural information could be used for the development of smart airbags, for detecting possible fatigue in long travel and for recognizing activities which may determine if the driver has enough time to take over the control in an intelligent vehicle when encountering hazardous situations. Microsoft Kinect is one of the best candidates for monitoring driver’s posture thanks to its innovative feature of real time motion capture without use of markers and its low cost. However, when body parts are partially occluded, the accuracy of Kinect data will drop markedly. Inspired by previous researches, the present work focused on testing a data driven approach for improving driver’s upper body movement reconstruction with a Kinect camera. Firstly, we organize a database of accurately captured driver poses from different motion clips with filtered structures, including a global motion graph and multiple local motion graphs.

In-Vehicle Driving Posture Reconstruction from 3D Scanning Data Using a 3D Digital Human Modeling Tool

Driving posture study is essential for the evaluation of the occupant packaging. This paper presents a method of reconstructing driver’s postures in a real vehicle using a 3D laser scanner and Human Builder (HB), the digital human modeling tool under CATIA. The scanning data was at first converted into the format readable by CATIA, and then a personalized HB manikin was generated mainly using stature, sitting height and weight. Its pelvis position and joint angles were manually adjusted so as to match the manikin with the scan envelop. If needed, a fine adjustment of some anthropometric dimensions was also preceded. Finally the personalized manikin was put in the vehicle coordinate system, and joint angels and joint positions were extracted for further analysis.

Influence of Test Conditions on Protection Criteria in Side Impact

Numerous cadaver tests have been performed in the past to define the behaviour and tolerance of the thorax under side impact conditions. To take into account the various test conditions and measurements techniques or parameters, a lumped parameter model is used to reproduce these tests and thus to compute the protection criteria in the same way. The correlation between the calculated criteria and the observed injuries is then analysed as a basis for discussion of their consistency and relevance. The second part of the paper deals with the transposition of tolerance criteria to the Eurosid 1 dummy, using simulation tests under different conditions (impactor test, free-fall test, imposed velocity). The results show that this transposition depends on the test conditions, because of the limited biofidelity of the Eurosid 1 dummy.
