2D Ice Shape Scaling for Helicopter Blade Profiles in Icing Wind Tunnel

Different Airbus Helicopters main rotor blade profiles were tested in different icing wind tunnels and for different icing conditions. One of the objectives of the accretion tests was to validate the use of 2D icing scaling laws established for fixed wing aircraft on helicopter blade profiles. Therefore, ice shapes resulting from tests with the same icing similarity parameters are compared to each other allowing the assessment of icing scaling laws for helicopter applications. This paper presents the icing scaling laws used at Airbus Helicopters on blade profiles, the different test set ups and test models and it presents the comparison of the ice shapes collected during the icing wind tunnel test campaigns.

4-Sensor 2-Channel Anti-Lock System for FWD Cars

The possibility of 2 Channel anti-lock system, which controls each of two independent hydraulic circuits of diagonal split braking system of FWD car seperately, were studied. Theoretical investigation suggested two out of four possible control logics to be promising and they were proved to be practically satisfactory through vehicle test. This system is almost as effective as expensive 3-channel or 4-channel system, when the braking force distribution between front and rear axles is correct as required by EEC Braking regulation. Under extreme condition that rear wheels lock earlier than fronts, the compromise between stopping distance and stability is necessary.

50 Development of Measurement Method for Airborne Sound Emitted by Personal Watercraft

The personal watercrafts (PWC's) are operated in various ways; going around on certain course again and again, repeating acceleration and deceleration, or prolonged idling operation, for instance. The procedure of ISO 14509 has been applied in the traditional sound measurement for powered recreational craft. However, the standard is designed to measure the sound from the typical small crafts, on the assumption that they run straight in a constant speed. It is believed to be inappropriate to use this procedure for the measurement of PWC sound. In trying to establish the suitable procedure for PWC, evaluation by the auditory sense of 15 raters was carried out in parallel with the traditional sound pressure level measurement. As the candidate, four (4) measurement methods were employed in this test. 5 models of PWC's including modified crafts were used. Correlation between the results of traditional sound measurement and the auditory sense ratings was examined.

For the launch of the 800 series ARG set out to maintain the paint on line process for plastic bumpers developed for Maestro and Montego, to achieve this, new and exciting problems had to be overcome. A vehicle weight of 1420kg for the highest derivative, a maximum centreline deflection of 15mm front and rear, a profile collapse calculated to absorb energy within 65% of it's cross sectional area and show no damage within the terms of the ECE 42 regulation, ie 4kph centreline and mounting, 2.5kph corner and a perfect colour match combined with the highest quality.

A Bistate Control of a Semiactive Automotive Suspension

The purpose of this paper is to develop and experimentally validate a practical and effective technique for the automatic regulation of a hydraulic semiactive vibration absorber (SAVA) for automobiles. The work relies on a consistent hydraulic model of the actuator dynamics that includes the effects of fluid compressibility and a nonlinear viscous loss characteristic. A bistate control algorithm is developed using a Lyapunov approach that seeks to dissipate the energy of the system. The performance of the proposed semiactive damper design on a quarter car model of an automobile suspension is established experimentally on a vibrating test stand. The work provides evidence that the inexpensive hardware design makes it possible to improve the ride and handling performance.

A CFV Type Mini-dilution Sampling System for Vehicle Exhaust Emissions Measurement

The traditional method for sampling vehicle exhaust has been the constant volume sampler (CVS) technique as described in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). This method dilutes the entire exhaust output from the vehicle, meters the mixture, and takes a proportional sample for measurement. The Mini-diluter sampling method reverses this process by first metering a small sample and then diluting to a fixed dilution ratio. This approach offers new opportunities to improve the quality of the sample measurement. This is especially interesting considering the lower emissions levels from ULEVs. The usefulness of this idea will depend on the development of stable and repeatable devices to implement it. This paper describes the operation of and presents results from a Mini-dilution system that uses critical flow venturis to provide a stable and repeatable dilution.

The paper traces the development of the approach to airworthiness taken by Canadian government authorities from its origin through to current practices. It describes the Aerospace industry, the carriers and general aviation in statistical terms, indicates the impact of economic regulatory reform and suggests the way ahead for Canadian and other authorities lies in the attitude and methodologies practiced by the European authorities in their development of JARs. I SHOULD PERHAPS start this presentation with a short word about authorities. At the conclusion of a speech on safety regulation by Mr. Ronald Ashford of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, reported in Flight International of April 19, 1986, the following quotation from St. Paul to the Romans appeared: “You wish to have no fear of the authorities? Then continue to do right and you will have their approval, for they are God's agents working for your good”.

A new family of canister-type fuel pumps for use on both rotary and fixed-wing aircraft in general aviation use will be described. The pump, which features a wet-brush DC motor, offers advantages on aircraft where ease of maintenance and minimum downtime is very important.
