Material-Cold drawn SAE 1112 or 1113 steel, alloy steel or copper alloy as specified by purchaser. Unless otherwise specified, steel pins shall have a flash plate of cadmium or zinc for protection of pins in transit or storage. Grooved Straight Pins must be free from burrs and all other defects that might affect their use and serviceability.
Rationale:The Spring-Type Straight Pins specified by SAE J494 are covered by the current American National Standards, ASME B18.82 which provides more complete specifications for these types of pins and is maintained continuously by ASME B18 Subcommittee 8. Since this SAE Standard has not been updated in the last 30 years, it has become outdated. It is counterproductive to have differing or conflicting American standards for the same products.
