Energy-Efficient and Context-Aware Computing in Software-Defined Vehicles for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

The rise of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDV) has rapidly advanced the development of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Autonomous Vehicle (AV), and Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) technology. While AVs need power to compute data from perception to controls, BEVs need the efficiency to optimize their electric driving range and stand out compared to traditional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles. AVs possess certain shortcomings in the current world, but SAE Level 2+ (L2+) Automated Vehicles are the focus of all major Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). The most common form of an SDV today is the amalgamation of AV and BEV technology on the same platform which is prominently available in most OEM’s lineups. As the compute and sensing architectures for L2+ automated vehicles lean towards a computationally expensive centralized design, it may hamper the most important purchasing factor of a BEV, the electric driving range.

Efficient Design of Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers Using CAD Automation and Fluid flow Analysis in a Multi-Objective Bayesian Optimization Framework

Shell-and-tube heat exchangers, commonly referred to as radiators, are the most prevalent type of heat exchanger within the automotive industry. A pivotal goal for automotive designers is to increase their thermal effectiveness while mitigating pressure drop effects and minimizing the associated costs of design and operation. Their design is a lengthy and intricate process involving the manual creation and refinement of computer-aided design (CAD) models coupled with iterative multi-physics simulations. Consequently, there is a pressing demand for an integrated tool that can automate these discrete steps, yielding a significant enhancement in overall design efficiency. This work aims to introduce an innovative automation tool to streamline the design process, spanning from CAD model generation to identifying optimal design configurations. The proposed methodology is applied explicitly to the context of shell-and-tube heat exchangers, showcasing the tool's efficacy.

Improving Vehicle Stability and Comfort through Active Corner Positioning

The emergence of new electric vehicle (EV) corner concepts with in-wheel motors offers numerous opportunities to improve handling, comfort, and stability. This study investigates the potential of controlling the vehicle's corner positioning by changing wheel toe and camber angles. A high-fidelity simulation environment was used to evaluate the proposed solution. The effects of the placement of the corresponding actuators and the actuation point on the force required during cornering were investigated. The results demonstrate that the toe angle, compared to the camber angle, offers more effect for improving the vehicle dynamics. The developed direct yaw rate control with four toe actuators improves stability, has a positive effect on comfort, and contributes to the development of new active corner architectures for electric and automated vehicles.

High-Speed 2-D Raman and Rayleigh Imaging of a Hydrogen Jet Issued from a Hollow-Cone Piezo Injector

This paper reports high-speed (10 kHz and 100 kHz) 2-D Raman/Rayleigh measurements of a hydrogen (H2) jet issued from a Bosch HDEV4 hollow-cone piezo injector in a high-volume constant pressure vessel. During the experiments, a Pa = 10 bar ambient environment with pure nitrogen (N2) is created in the chamber at T = 298 K, and pure H2 is injected vertically with an injection pressure of Pi = 51 bar. To accommodate the transient nature of the injections, a kHz-rate burst-mode laser system with second harmonic output at λ = 532 nm and high-speed CMOS cameras are employed. By sequentially separating the scattered light using dichroic mirrors and bandpass filters, both elastic Rayleigh (λ = 532 nm) and inelastic N2 (λ = 607 nm) and H2 (λ = 683 nm) Raman signals are recorded on individual cameras. With the help of the wavelet denoising algorithm, the detection limit of 2-D Raman imaging is greatly expanded.

A Transfer-Matrix-Based Approach to Predicting Acoustic Properties of a Layered System in a General, Efficient, and Stable Way

Layered materials are one of the most commonly used acoustical treatments in the automotive industry, and have gained increased attention, especially owing to the popularity of electric vehicles. Here, a method to model and couple layered systems with various layer types (i.e., poro-elastic layers, solid-elastic layers, stiff panels, and fluid layers) is derived that makes it possible to stably predict their acoustical properties. In contrast with most existing methods, in which an equation system is constructed for the whole structure, the present method involves only the topmost layer and its boundary conditions at two interfaces at a time, which are further simplified into an equivalent interface. As a result, for a multi-layered system, the proposed method splits a complicated system into several smaller systems and so becomes computationally less expensive.

Real Time Bearing Defect Classification Using Time Domain Analysis and Deep Learning Algorithms

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), especially in the field of rotary machinery diagnosis, plays a crucial role in determining the defect category as well as its intensity in a machine element. This paper proposes a new framework for real-time classification of structural defects in a roller bearing test rig using time domain-based classification algorithms. Along with the bearing defects, the effect of eccentric shaft loading has also been analyzed. The entire system comprises of three modules: sensor module – using accelerometers for data collection, data processing module – using time-domain based signal processing algorithms for feature extraction, and classification module – comprising of deep learning algorithms for classifying between different structural defects occurring within the inner and outer race of the bearing.

Interconnected Roll Stability Control System for Semitrucks with Double Trailers

This paper provides a simulation analysis of a novel interconnected roll stability control (RSC) system for improving the roll stability of semitrucks with double trailers. Different from conventional RSC systems where each trailer’s RSC module operates independently, the studied interconnected RSC system allows the two trailers’ RSC systems to communicate with each other. As such, if one trailer’s RSC activates, the other one is also activated to assist in further scrubbing speed or intervening sooner. Simulations are performed using a multi-body vehicle dynamics model that is developed in TruckSim® and coupled with the RSC model established in Simulink®. The dynamic model is validated using track test data. The simulation results for a ramp steer maneuver (RSM) and sine-with-dwell (SWD) maneuver indicate that the proposed RSC system reduces lateral acceleration and rollover index for both trailers, decreasing the likelihood of wheel tip-up and vehicle rollover.

Methodologic Assessment of Brake-by-Wire System Modelling with Regard to Accuracy, Model Complexity and Optimization Efforts

Brake-by-wire systems are an innovative and important component of modern high-performance and also electrified vehicles. Due to their decoupled architecture, they enable driver-independent vehicle dynamics control (e.g., brake torque blending) and easy integration of assistance functionalities (e.g. Emergency Brake Assist (EBA)). On the other hand, the development of these functions can cause high costs and development effort, and testing can be critical in case of improper gain tuning. Therefore, already in the concept phase, a large part of the testing is shifted to virtual environments and simulations that allow safe and reproducible experiments without damage. Therefore, suitable and reliable models are needed to represent reality as accurately as possible. This paper deals with the modelling of a purely electrohydraulic brake-by-wire system and a hybrid system with electrohydraulic brakes on the front axle and electromechanical brakes on the rear axle.

Unified Net Willans Line Model for Estimating the Energy Consumption of Battery Electric Vehicles

Due to increased urgency regarding environmental concerns within the transportation industry, sustainable solutions for combating climate change are in high demand. One solution is a widespread transition from internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) to battery electric vehicles (BEVs). To facilitate this transition, reliable energy consumption modeling is desired for providing quick, high-level estimations for a BEV without requiring extensive vehicle and computational resources. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to create a simple, yet reliable vehicle model, that can estimate the energy consumption of most electric vehicles on the market by using parameter normalization techniques. These vehicle parameters include the vehicle test weight and performance to obtain a unified net Willans line to describe the input/output power using a linear relationship.

Multi-Objective Bayesian Optimization Supported by Deep Gaussian Processes

A common scenario in engineering design is the evaluation of expensive black-box functions: simulation codes or physical experiments that require long evaluation times and/or significant resources, which results in lengthy and costly design cycles. In the last years, Bayesian optimization has emerged as an efficient alternative to solve expensive black-box function design problems. Bayesian optimization has two main components: a probabilistic surrogate model of the black-box function and an acquisition functions that drives the design process. Successful Bayesian optimization strategies are characterized by accurate surrogate models and well-balanced acquisition functions. The Gaussian process (GP) regression model is arguably the most popular surrogate model in Bayesian optimization due to its flexibility and mathematical tractability. GP regression models are defined by two elements: the mean and covariance functions.

Development of a Willans Line Rule-Based Hybrid Energy Management Strategy

The pre-prototype development of a simulated rule-based hybrid energy management strategy for a 2019 Chevrolet Blazer RS converted parallel P4 full hybrid is presented. A vehicle simulation model is developed using component bench data and validated using EPA-reported dynamometer fuel economy test data. A combined Willans line model is proposed for the engine and transmission, with hybrid control rules based on efficiency-derived engine power thresholds. Algorithms are proposed for battery state of charge (SOC) management including engine loading and one pedal strategies, with battery SOC maintained within 20% to 80% safe limits and charge balanced behavior achieved. The simulated rule-based hybrid control strategy for the hybrid vehicle has an energy consumption reduction of 20% for the Hot 505, 3.6% for the HwFET, and 12% for the US06 compared to the stock vehicle.

Evaluating Simulation Driver Model Performance Using Dynamometer Test Criteria

The influence of driver modeling and drive cycle target speed trace modification on vehicle dynamics within energy consumption simulations is studied. EPA dynamometer speed error criteria and the SAE J2951 Drive Quality Evaluation for Chassis Dynamometer Testing standard are applied to simulation outputs as proposed components of simulation validation, providing guidelines for acceptable vehicle speed outputs and allowing comparison of simulation results to reported EPA dynamometer test statistics. The combined effect of driver model tuning and drive cycle interpolation methods is investigated for the UDDS, HwFET and US06 drive cycles, with EPA-specified linearly interpolated speed trace and a PI controller driver as a baseline result.

Electric Vehicle Corner Architecture: Driving Comfort Evaluation Using Objective Metrics

The presented paper is dedicated to the driving comfort evaluation in the case of the electric vehicle architecture with four independent wheel corners equipped with in-wheel motors (IWMs). The analysis of recent design trends for electrified road vehicles indicates that a higher degree of integration between powertrain and chassis and the shift towards a corner-based architecture promises improved energy efficiency and safety performances. However, an in-wheel-mounted electric motor noticeable increases unsprung vehicle mass, leading to some undesirable impact on chassis loads and driving comfort. As a countermeasure, a possible solution lies in integrated active corner systems, which are not limited by traditional active suspension, steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire actuators. However, it can also include actuators influencing the wheel positioning through the active camber and toe angle control.

Willans Line Bidirectional Power Flow Model for Energy Consumption of Electric Vehicles

A new and unique electric vehicle powertrain model based on bidirectional power flow for propel and regenerative brake power capture is developed and applied to production battery electric vehicles. The model is based on a Willans line model to relate power input from the battery and power output to tractive effort, with one set of parameters (marginal efficiency and an offset loss) for the bidirectional power flow through the powertrain. An electric accessory load is included for the propel, brake and idle phases of vehicle operation. In addition, regenerative brake energy capture is limited with a regen fraction (where the balance goes to friction braking), a power limit, and a low-speed cutoff limit. The purpose of the model is to predict energy consumption and range using only tractive effort based on EPA published road load and test mass (test car list data) and vehicle powertrain parameters derived from EPA reported unadjusted UDDS and HWFET energy consumption.

Identifying Pedal Misapplication Behavior Using Event Data Recorders

Pedal misapplication (PM) crashes, i.e., crashes caused by a driver pressing one pedal while intending to press another pedal, have historically been identified by searching unstructured crash narratives for keywords and verified via labor-intensive manual inspection. This study proposes an alternative method to identify PM crashes using event data recorders (EDRs). Since drivers in emergency braking situations are motivated to hit the brake hard, it follows that drivers in emergency braking situations that commit a PM would likewise hit the accelerator hard, likely harder than accelerator pedal application during normal driving. Thus, the time-series accelerator pedal position and the derived accelerator pedal application rate were used to isolate accelerator misapplications. Additional strategic filters were applied based on characteristics observed from previous PM analyses to reduce false positive PM identifications.

Combined CFD and CAA Simulations with Impedance Boundary Conditions

In computational fluid dynamic (CFD) and computational aeroacoustics (CAA) simulations, the wall surface is normally treated as a purely reflective wall. However, some surface treatments are usually applied in experiments. Thus, the acoustic simulations cannot be validated by experimental results. One of the major challenges is how to define acoustically boundary conditions in a well-posed way. In aeroacoustics analysis, impedance is a quantity to characterize reflectivity and absorption of an acoustically treated surface, which may be introduced into the numerical models as a frequency-domain boundary condition. However, CFD and CAA simulations are time-domain computations, meaning the frequency-domain impedance boundary condition cannot be adopted directly. Several methods, including the three-parameter model, the z-transform method and the reflection coefficient model, were developed.

A Hybrid Acoustic Model for Composite Materials Composed of Fibers and High Surface Area Particles

High surface area particles have drawn attention in the context of noise control due to their good sound absorption performance at low frequencies, which is an advantage compared with more traditional materials. That observation suggests that there is a good potential to use these particles in various scenarios, especially where low frequency noise is the main concern. To facilitate their application, composite materials are formed by dispersing particles within a fiber matrix, thus giving more flexibility in positioning those particles. In this work, a hybrid model that combines a model for limp porous materials and a model of high surface area particles is proposed to describe the acoustic performance of such composites. Two-microphone standing wave tube test results for several types of composites with different thickness, basis weight, and particle concentration are provided.

Detection of Pinion Grinding Defects in a Nested Planetary Gear System using a Narrowband Demodulation Approach

Nested planetary gear trains, which consist of two integrated co-axial single-stage planetary gearsets, have recently been widely implemented in automobile transmissions and various other applications. In the current study, a non-destructive vibrational and acoustical monitoring technique is developed to detect a common type of gear grinding defect for a complex nested gear train structure. A nested gear train which has an unground pinion with unpolished teeth profile is used to exemplify the developed methodology. An experimental test stand with an open and vertical mounting configuration has been designed to acquire both vibrational and acoustical data. The measured data are investigated using several signal processing techniques to identify unground pinions in the gear system. A general frequency spectrum analysis is performed initially, which is then followed by a peak finding algorithm to identify the peaks in the spectrum.

FE Simulation of Split in Fundamental Air-Cavity Mode of Loaded Tires: Comparison with Empirical Results

Tire/road noise has become a significant issue in the automotive industry, especially for electric vehicles. Among the various tire/road noise sources, the air-cavity mode can amplify the forces transmitted from the tire to the suspension system causing noticeable cabin noise near 200 Hz. Furthermore, when the tire is deformed by loading, the fundamental air-cavity mode separates into two acoustic modes, a fore-aft mode and vertical mode due to the break in geometrical symmetry. This is important because the two components of the split mode can increase force levels at the hub by interacting with neighboring structural modes, thus resulting in increased interior noise levels. In this research, finite element simulations of five commercial tires at rated load were performed with a view to identifying the frequency split and its interaction with structural resonances. These results have been compared with previously obtained empirical results.

Fail-Safe Study on Brake Blending Control

Battery electric vehicles (BEV) share the ability of regenerative braking since they are equipped with two independent types of deceleration devices, namely the electric motor working as a generator and the friction brakes. Correct interaction of these systems in terms of driving safety and energy efficiency is a function of the Brake Blending Control. Individual electric motors for each wheel and a decoupled brake system provides the Brake Blending with a high design flexibility that allows significant advantages regarding energy consumption, brake performance, and driving comfort. This paper is focusing on the fail behaviour and analyses the robustness and redundancy abilities of such systems against various error scenarios. For this purposes, a distributed x-in-the-loop environment, consisting of dedicated simulation and hardware testing components, is introduced.
