Streamlining Hybrid Vehicle Control Development with an Efficient MATLAB/Simulink Simulation Platform

Automotive hybrid vehicle controls development is an increasingly complex and challenging task. Therefore, to adequately verify and validate the control algorithms prior to its deployment onto real world testing platforms a robust, scalable, low-maintenance simulation platform is most necessary. The currently available test properties pose major challenges in setup, accessibility, maintenance, complexity, and reusability. The aim of this paper is to present a systematic approach of the initial setup, the adaptation to a vehicle program, and the maintenance of a purely MATLAB/Simulink based simulation platform that alleviates the concerns highlighted above. The platform follows the approach of a level 1 virtualization platform for production intent application software components - without the Run-Time Environment (RTE), Basic Software (BSW), and Microcode Abstraction (MCAL) layers.

An optimized, data-driven reaction mechanism for Dual-Fuel combustion of Ammonia and Diesel Primary Reference Fuels

The possibility to operate current diesel engines in dual-fuel mode with the addition of an alternative fuel is fundamental to accelerate the energy transition to achieve carbon neutrality. The simulation of the dual- fuel combustion process with 0D/1D combustion models is fundamental for the performance prediction, but still particularly challenging, due to chemical interactions of the mixture. The authors defined a novel data-driven workflow for the development of combustion reaction mechanisms and used it to generate a dual-fuel mechanism for Ammonia and Diesel Primary Reference Fuels (DPRF) suitable for efficient combustion simulations in heavy duty engines, with variable cetane number Diesel fuels. A baseline reaction mechanism was created by merging the detailed ammonia mechanism by Glarborg et al. with reaction pathways for n- hexadecane and 2,2,4,4,6,8,8-heptamethylnonane from a well-established multi-component fuel mechanism.

A Dual-Fuel Model of Flame Initiation and Propagation for Modelling Heavy-Duty Engines with the G-Equation

We propose a novel dual-fuel combustion model for simulating heavy-duty engines with the G-Equation. Dual-Fuel combustion strategies in such engines features direct injection of a high-reactivity fuel into a lean, premixed chamber which has a high resistance to autoignition. Distinct combustion modes are present: the DI fuel auto-ignites following chemical ignition delay after spray vaporization and mixing; a reactive front is formed on its surroundings; it develops into a well-structured turbulent flame, which propagates within the premixed charge. Either direct chemistry or the flame-propagation approach (G- Equation), taken alone, do not produce accurate results. The proposed Dual-Fuel model decides what regions of the combustion chamber should be simulated with either approach, according to the local flame state; and acts as a “kernel” model for the G- Equation model. Direct chemistry is run in the regions where a premixed front is not present.

Safety Verification and Navigation for Autonomous Vehicles Based on Signal Temporal Logic Constraints

The software architecture behind modern autonomous vehicles (AV) is becoming more complex steadily. Safety verification is now an imminent task prior to the large-scale deployment of such convoluted models. For safety-critical tasks in navigation, it becomes imperative to perform a verification procedure on the trajectories proposed by the planning algorithm prior to deployment. Signal Temporal Logic (STL) constraints can dictate the safety requirements for an AV. A combination of STL constraints is called a specification. A key difference between STL and other logic constraints is that STL allows us to work on continuous signals. We verify the satisfaction of the STL specifications by calculating the robustness value for each signal within the specification. Higher robustness values indicate a safer system. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is one of the most widely used methods to control the navigation of an AV, with an underlying set of state and input constraints.

Traffic Safety Improvement through Evaluation of Driver Behavior – An Initial Step Towards Vehicle Assessment of Human Operators

In the United States and worldwide, 38,824 and 1.35 million people were killed in vehicle crashes during 2020. These statistics are tragic and indicative of an on-going public health crisis centered on automobiles and other ground transportation solutions. Although the long-term US vehicle fatality rate is slowly declining, it continues to be elevated compared to European countries. The introduction of vehicle safety systems and re-designed roadways has improved survivability and driving environment, but driver behavior has not been fully addressed. A non-confrontational approach is the evaluation of driver behavior using onboard sensors and computer algorithms to determine the vehicle’s “mistrust” level of the given operator and the safety of the individual operating the vehicle. This is an inversion of the classic human-machine trust paradigm in which the human evaluates whether the machine can safely operate in an automated fashion.

Formal Verification of Autonomous Vehicles: Bridging the Gap between Model-Based Design and Model Checking

Formal verification plays an important role in proving the safety of autonomous vehicles (AV). It is crucial to find errors in the AV system model to ensure safety critical features are not compromised. Model checking is a formal verification method which checks if the finite state machine (FSM) model meets system requirements. These requirements can be expressed as linear Temporal logic (LTL) formulae to describe a sequence of states with linear Temporal properties to be satisfied. NuSMV is a dedicated software for performing model checking based on Temporal logic formulae on FSM models. However, NuSMV does not provide model-based design. On the other hand, Stateflow in MATLAB/SIMULINK is a powerful tool for designing the model and offers an interactive Graphical User Interface (GUI) for the user/verifier but is not as efficient as NuSMV in model checking.

Adaptive Real-Time Energy Management of a Multi-Mode Hybrid Electric Powertrain

Meticulous design of the energy management control algorithm is required to exploit all fuel-saving potentials of a hybrid electric vehicle. Equivalent consumption minimization strategy is a well-known representative of on-line strategies that can give near-optimal solutions without knowing the future driving tasks. In this context, this paper aims to propose an adaptive real-time equivalent consumption minimization strategy for a multi-mode hybrid electric powertrain. With the help of road recognition and vehicle speed prediction techniques, future driving conditions can be predicted over a certain horizon. Based on the predicted power demand, the optimal equivalence factor is calculated in advance by using bisection method and implemented for the upcoming driving period. In such a way, the equivalence factor is updated periodically to achieve charge sustaining operation and optimality.

A Computationally Lightweight Dynamic Programming Formulation for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Predicting the fuel economy capability of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) powertrains by solving the related optimal control problem has been available for a few decades. Dynamic programming (DP) is one of the most popular techniques implemented to this end. Current research aims at integrating further powertrain modeling criteria that improve the fidelity level of the optimal HEV powertrain control behavior predicted by DP, thus corroborating the reliability of the fuel economy assessment. Dedicated methodologies need further development to avoid the curse of dimensionality which is typically associated to DP when increasing the number of control and state variables considered. This paper aims at considerably reducing the overall computational effort required by DP for HEVs by removing the state term associated to the battery state-of-charge (SOC).

An Automated Workflow for Efficient Conjugate Heat Transfer Analysis of a Diesel Engine

The internal combustion engine’s performance is affected by in-cylinder combustion processes and heat transfer rates through the combustion chamber walls. Hot spots may affect the reliability and durability of the engine components. Design of efficient and effective coolant systems requires accurate accounting of the heat fluxes into and out of the solid parts during the engine operation. The need to assess the engine’s performance early in the design process has motivated the use of a computational approach to predict such data. A more accurate representation of the engine’s operation is obtained by coupling the thermal, flow, and combustion analysis of the various components, such as the combustion chamber, ports, engine block, and its cooling system. Typically, a stand-alone CFD simulation does not capture the complex nature of the problem, and the manual transfer of data between multiple analyses may lead to an onerous or error-prone workflow requiring multiple user interventions.

Automatic Formal Verification of SysML State Machine Diagrams for Vehicular Control Systems

Vehicular control systems are characterized with numerous complex interactions with a steady rise of autonomous functions, which makes it more challenging for designers and safety engineers to identify unexpected failures. These systems tend to be highly integrated and exhibit features like concurrency for which traditional verification and validation techniques (i.e. testing and simulation) are insufficient to provide rigorous and complete assessment. Model Checking, a well-known formal verification technique, can be used to rigorously prove the correctness of such systems according to design Requirements. In particular, Model Checking is a method for formally verifying finite-state concurrent systems. Specifications about the system are expressed as temporal logic formulas, and efficient symbolic algorithms are used to traverse the model defined by the system and check if the specification holds or not.

Numerical Modeling of Spray Formation under Flash-boiling Conditions

Flash boiling occurs in sprays when the ambient gas pressure is lower than the saturation pressure of the injected fuel. In the present work, a numerical study was conducted to investigate solid-cone spray behaviors under various flash-boiling conditions. A new spray cone angle correlation that is a function of injection parameters was developed and used for spray initialization at the nozzle exit to capture plume interactions and the global spray shape. The spray-breakup regime control was adjusted to enable catastrophic droplet breakup, characterized by Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) breakup, near the nozzle exit. The model was validated against experimental spray data from five different injectors, including both multi-hole and single-hole injectors, with injection pressure varying from 100 to 200 bar.

The Computational Cost and Accuracy of Spray Droplet Collision Models

This study focuses on Lagrangian spray models that are commonly used in engine CFD simulations. In modeling sprays, droplet collision is one of the physical phenomena that must be accounted for. There are two main parts of droplet collision models for sprays - detecting colliding pairs of droplets and predicting the outcomes of these collisions. For the first part, we focus on the efficiency of the algorithm. We present an implementation of the arbitrary adaptive collision mesh model of Hou and Schmidt [1], and examine its efficiency in dealing with large simulations. Through theoretical analysis and numerical tests, we show that the computational cost of this model scales pseudo-linearly with respect to the number of parcels in the sprays. Regarding the second part, we examine the variations in existing phenomenological models used for predicting binary droplet collision outcomes. A quantitative accuracy metric is used to evaluate the models with respect to the experimental data set.

Large-Eddy Simulation and Analysis of Turbulent Flows in a Motored Spark-Ignition Engine

Advanced research in Spark-ignition (SI) engines has been focused on dilute-combustion concepts. For example, exhaust-gas recirculation is used to lower both fuel consumption and pollutant emissions while maintaining or enhancing engine performance, durability and reliability. These advancements achieve higher engine efficiency but may deteriorate combustion stability. One symptom of instability is a large cycle-to-cycle variation (CCV) in the in-cylinder flow and combustion metrics. Large-eddy simulation (LES) is a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method that may be used to quantify CCV through numerical prediction of the turbulent flow and combustion processes in the engine over many engine cycles. In this study, we focus on evaluating the capability of LES to predict the in-cylinder flows and gas exchange processes in a motored SI engine installed with a transparent combustion chamber (TCC), comparing with recently published data.

Developing a 55% BTE Commercial Heavy-Duty Opposed-Piston Engine without a Waste Heat Recovery System

Heavy-duty vehicles, currently the second largest source of fuel consumption and carbon emissions are projected to be fastest growing mode in transportation sector in future. There is a clear need to increase fuel efficiency and lower emissions for these engines. The Opposed-Piston Engine (OP Engine) has the potential to address this growing need. In this paper, results are presented for a 9.8L three-cylinder two-stroke OP Engine that shows the potential of achieving 55% brake thermal efficiency (BTE), while simultaneously satisfying emission targets for tail pipe emissions. The two-stroke OP Engines are inherently more cost effective due to less engine parts. The OP Engine architecture presented in this paper can meet this performance without the use of waste heat recovery systems or turbo-compounding and hence is the most cost effective technology to deliver this level of fuel efficiency.

A Progress Review on Soot Experiments and Modeling in the Engine Combustion Network (ECN)

The 4th Workshop of the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) was held September 5-6, 2015 in Kyoto, Japan. This manuscript presents a summary of the progress in experiments and modeling among ECN contributors leading to a better understanding of soot formation under the ECN “Spray A” configuration and some parametric variants. Relevant published and unpublished work from prior ECN workshops is reviewed. Experiments measuring soot particle size and morphology, soot volume fraction (fv), and transient soot mass have been conducted at various international institutions providing target data for improvements to computational models. Multiple modeling contributions using both the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) Equations approach and the Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) approach have been submitted. Among these, various chemical mechanisms, soot models, and turbulence-chemistry interaction (TCI) methodologies have been considered.

Applying Advanced CFD Analysis Tools to Study Differences between Start-of-Main and Start-of-Post Injection Flow, Temperature and Chemistry Fields Due to Combustion of Main-Injected Fuel

This paper is part of a larger body of experimental and computational work devoted to studying the role of close-coupled post injections on soot reduction in a heavy-duty optical engine. It is a continuation of an earlier computational paper. The goals of the current work are to develop new CFD analysis tools and methods and apply them to gain a more in depth understanding of the different in-cylinder environments into which fuel from main- and post-injections are injected and to study how the in-cylinder flow, thermal and chemical fields are transformed between start of injection timings. The engine represented in this computational study is a single-cylinder, direct-injection, heavy-duty, low-swirl engine with optical components. It is based on the Cummins N14, has a cylindrical shaped piston bowl and an eight-hole injector that are both centered on the cylinder axis. The fuel used was n-heptane and the engine operating condition was light load at 1200 RPM.

Measured and Predicted Soot Particle Emissions from Natural Gas Engines

Due to the new challenge of meeting number-based regulations for particulate matter (PM), a numerical and experimental study has been conducted to better understand particulate formation in engines fuelled with compressed natural gas. The study has been conducted on a Heavy-Duty, Euro VI, 4-cylinder, spark ignited engine, with multipoint sequential phased injection and stoichiometric combustion. For the experimental measurements two different instruments were used: a condensation particle counter (CPC) and a fast-response particle size spectrometer (DMS) the latter able also to provide a particle size distribution of the measured particles in the range from 5 to 1000 nm. Experimental measurements in both stationary and transient conditions were carried out. The data using the World Harmonized Transient Cycle (WHTC) were useful to detect which operating conditions lead to high numbers of particles. Then a further transient test was used for a more detailed and deeper analysis.

Numerical Study of RCCI and HCCI Combustion Processes Using Gasoline, Diesel, iso-Butanol and DTBP Cetane Improver

Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) has been shown to be an attractive concept to achieve clean and high efficiency combustion. RCCI can be realized by applying two fuels with different reactivities, e.g., diesel and gasoline. This motivates the idea of using a single low reactivity fuel and direct injection (DI) of the same fuel blended with a small amount of cetane improver to achieve RCCI combustion. In the current study, numerical investigation was conducted to simulate RCCI and HCCI combustion and emissions with various fuels, including gasoline/diesel, iso-butanol/diesel and iso-butanol/iso-butanol+di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP) cetane improver. A reduced Primary Reference Fuel (PRF)-iso-butanol-DTBP mechanism was formulated and coupled with the KIVA computational fluid dynamic (CFD) code to predict the combustion and emissions of these fuels under different operating conditions in a heavy duty diesel engine.

Multi-Dimensional-Modeling-Based Development of a Novel 2-Zone Combustion Chamber Applied to Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition Combustion

A novel 2-zone combustion chamber concept (patent pending) was developed using multi-dimensional modeling. At minimum volume, an axial projection in the piston divides the volume into distinct zones joined by a communication channel. The projection provides a means to control the mixture formation and combustion phasing within each zone. The novel combustion system was applied to reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion in both light-duty and heavy-duty diesel engines. Results from the study of an 8.8 bar BMEP, 2600 RPM operating condition are presented for the light-duty engine. The results from the heavy-duty engine are at an 18.1 bar BMEP, 1200 RPM operating condition. The effect of several major design features were investigated including the volume split between the inner and outer combustion chamber volumes, the clearance (squish) height, and the top ring land (crevice) volume.

Direct Dual Fuel Stratification, a Path to Combine the Benefits of RCCI and PPC

Control of the timing and magnitude of heat release is one of the biggest challenges for premixed compression ignition, especially when attempting to operate at high load. Single-fuel strategies such as partially premixed combustion (PPC) use direct injection of gasoline to stratify equivalence ratio and retard heat release, thereby reducing pressure rise rate and enabling high load operation. However, retarding the heat release also reduces the maximum work extraction, effectively creating a tradeoff between efficiency and noise. Dual-fuel strategies such as reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) use premixed gasoline and direct injection of diesel to stratify both equivalence ratio and fuel reactivity, which allows for greater control over the timing and duration of heat release. This enables combustion phasing closer to top dead center (TDC), which is thermodynamically favorable.
