Unsettled Issues on Human-Robot Collaboration and Automation in Aerospace Manufacturing

This SAE EDGE™ Research Report builds a comprehensive picture of the current state-of-the-art of human-robot applications, identifying key issues to unlock the technology’s potential. It brings together views of recognized thought leaders to understand and deconstruct the myths and realities of human- robot collaboration, and how it could eventually have the impact envisaged by many. Current thinking suggests that the emerging technology of human-robot collaboration provides an ideal solution, combining the flexibility and skill of human operators with the precision, repeatability, and reliability of robots. Yet, the topic tends to generate intense reactions ranging from a “brave new future” for aircraft manufacturing and assembly, to workers living in fear of a robot invasion and lost jobs. It is widely acknowledged that the application of robotics and automation in aerospace manufacturing is significantly lower than might be expected.

Free Multibody Cosimulation Based Prototyping of Motorcycle Rider Assistance Systems

Due to the increasing computational power, significant progress has been made over the past decades when it comes to CAD, multibody and simulation software. The application of this software allows to develop products from scratch, or to investigate the static and dynamic behavior of multibody models with remarkable precision. In order to keep the development costs low for highly sophisticated products, more precisely motorcycle rider assistance systems, it is necessary to focus extensively on the virtual prototyping using different software tools. In general, the interconnection of different tools is rather difficult, especially when considering the coupling of a detailed multibody model with a simulation software like MATLAB Simulink. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the performance of a motorcycle rider assistance algorithm using a cosimulation approach between the free multibody software called FreeDyn and Simulink based on a sophisticated multibody motorcycle model.

The Metallic Materials Properties Development and Standardization MMPDS-15 supersedes MMPDS-14 and prior editions of the MMPDS Handbook as well as all editions of MIL-HDBK-5, Metallic Materials and Elements for Aerospace Vehicle Structures Handbook that was maintained by the U.S. Air Force. The last edition, MIL-HDBK-5J was cancelled by the U.S. Air Force in March 2006. This document contains design information on the mechanical and physical properties of metallic materials and joints commonly used in aircraft and aerospace vehicle structures. All information contained in this Handbook has been reviewed and approved using a standardized process. The development and ongoing maintenance process involves certifying agencies, including the FAA, DoD, and NASA, and major material suppliers and material users worldwide. The information and procedures in this Handbook are continuously reviewed, and modified or removed as determined to be appropriate.

This standard provides instruction for producing a final report that will be used to determine if further investigation of a surface finish is justified. Further investigation may include tests and evaluations specific to an individual OEM prior to introduction/approval of the surface finish. The final report shall include the results, observations, and conclusions for all of the variables. The final report may be made up of several individual reports covering each variable. In all cases the laboratory performing the test, the test date and the report approver shall be included in the final report.

Automotive industry is undergoing a paradigm shift towards vehicles with alternative power. The sales of electric vehicles have increased by over 165% over the past 2 years in the United States [1]. With government incentives coupled with the decrease in battery cost, the trend seems to continue. As the friction brake accounts for about 5 to 30% of total braking in electric/hybrid vehicles, this also warrants for more research into the development of new lightweight, wear resistant, and sustainable friction materials also for reviewing the existing testing procedures. Phenolic resin is typically used as binding material in majority of the current brake friction materials. Numerous authors demonstrated that the type of phenolic resin has effect on properties of brake pads [2].

Where the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) or type of fitting is not specified, use the manufacturer's recommended MAWP or type of fitting. This list has been compiled by SAE staff from information provided by the manufacturers whose product listings appear in this document. Manufacturers wishing to list their products in this document shall: a. Successfully test their hose to the requirements of SAE J1942, Table 1. b. Submit a letter of certification to the SAE J1942 test requirements for each specific type of hose tested (see sample table, Table 1) along with the test results. All sizes should be included in the same letter which must also include all of the information necessary to make a SAE J1942-1 listing. c.
