Self-Learning Control Strategy for Electrified Off-Highway Machines to Optimize Energy Efficiency

The electrification of off-highway machines are increasing significantly. Advanced functionalities, beneficial energy efficiency and effectiveness are only a few advantages of electric propulsion systems. To control these complex systems in varying environments intelligent algorithms at system level are needed. This paper addresses the topic of machine learning algorithms applied to off-highway machines and presents a methodology based on artificial neural networks to identify and recognize recurrent load cycles and work tasks. To gain efficiency and effectiveness benefits the recognized pattern settings are applied to the electric propulsion system to adjust relevant parameters online. A dynamic adaption of the DC-link voltage based on the operating points of the machine processes is identified as such a parameter.

In-Service Emissions from Model Year 2012 Hydraulic Hybrid and Model Year 2008 Conventional Diesel Package Delivery Trucks

In-service emissions measurements were conducted on two package delivery trucks: one model year 2008 FCCC MT-55 conventional diesel and one model year 2012 FCCC MT-55 hydraulic hybrid (HHV). Mass emissions of CO2, CO, NOx, PM, and THC from the HHV and the conventional diesel test vehicle were each measured under conditions closely simulating normal package delivery operation. The HHV demonstrated a 29.4% improvement in fuel economy and a 17.4% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the conventional diesel vehicle. The HHV showed its best potential in operating areas characterized by low driving speeds and high number of stops (“pick-up and delivery”) with a 40.5% improvement in fuel economy and a 21.2% reduction in CO2 emissions.

An Experimental Methodology for Measuring Resistance Forces of Light-Duty Vehicles under Real-World Conditions and the Impact on Fuel Consumption

A vital element of any vehicle-certification test is the use of representative values for the vehicle resistance forces. In most certification procedures, including the WLTP recently adopted by the EU, the latter is achieved mainly through coast down tests. Subsequently, the resistance values measured are used for setting up the chassis-dyno resistances applied during the laboratory measurements. These reference values are obtained under controlled conditions, while a series of corrections are applied to make the test procedure more repeatable and reproducible. In real driving, the actual vehicle road loads are influenced by a series of factors leading to a divergence between the certified fuel consumption values, and the real-world ones. An approach of calculating representative road loads during on-road tests can help to obtain a more unobstructed view of vehicle efficiency and, when needed, confirm the officially declared road loads.

This Aerospace Standard (AS) establishes the requirements for suppliers of Nonconventional Machining Services to be accredited by the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program (NADCAP). NADCAP accreditation is granted in accordance with SAE AS7003 after demonstration of compliance with the requirements herein. The requirements may be supplemented by additional requirements specified by the NADCAP Nonconventional Machining and Surface Enhancement (NMSE) Task Group. Using the corresponding Audit Criteria (PRI AC7116) will ensure that accredited Nonconventional Machining suppliers meet all of the requirements in this standard and all applicable supplementary standards. The purpose of this audit program is to assess a supplier's ability to consistently provide a product or service that conforms to the technical specifications and customer requirements.

NOx Performance of an LNT+SCR System Designed to Meet EPA 2010 Emissions: Results of Engine Dynamometer Emission Tests

The paper covers the NOx performance evaluation of an LNT + SCR system designed to meet the 2010 on-highway heavy-duty (HD) US EPA emission standards. The system combines a fuel reformer catalyst (REF), lean NOx trap (LNT), diesel particulate filter (DPF), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) in series, to reduce engine-out NOx and PM. System NOx reduction performance was verified in an engine dynamometer test cell, using a 2007 7.6L medium-duty engine. System NOx performance was characterized using fresh LNT and SCR along with hydrothermal aged LNT and fresh SCR. Test results show levels consistent with EPA 2010 limits under various test conditions. Catalysts performance was characterized at eight steady engine-operating conditions (A100, B50, B75, A75, B100, C100, C75, C50, across a 13-mode Supplemental Emission Test (SET), and an on-highway Heavy Duty Federal Test Procedure (HD-FTP).

FEA-Based Fatigue Life Prediction of a Notched CGI Component

A cyclically pressurized hydraulic component made of compacted graphite iron (CGI) is examined in fatigue design. This CGI component has a notch, formed at the intersection of two drilling channels. This notch causes the stress to be locally elevated and may potentially serve as a fatigue initiation site. Traditional fatigue design approaches calculate the maximum stress/strain range acting at the notch and apply the Neuber correction when calculating fatigue life. It is, however, found that the fatigue life is dramatically underestimated by this method. This prompts the use of the critical distance method because the stresses are concentrated in a relatively small volume. When using the critical distance method, the fatigue life is correctly predicted. Finally, a fracture mechanics model of the crack check the reasonableness of the critical distance method results.

Powertrain Cycle for Emission Certification

In August of 2011, the US Environmental Protection Agency issued new Green House Gas (GHG) emissions regulations for heavy duty vehicles. These regulations included new procedures for the evaluation of hybrid powertrains and vehicles. One of the hybrid options allows for the evaluation of an engine plus a hybrid transmission (a powertrain). For this type of testing, EPA has proposed simulating a vehicle following the hybrid vehicle test procedures, including the use of the vehicle cycles and the A to B comparison testing - as required for the full vehicle evaluation option. This paper proposes an alternative approach by defining a powertrain cycle. The powertrain cycle is based on the heavy duty engine emissions cycle - the transient FTP cycle. Simulation and test results are presented showing similar performance over the engine and vehicle cycles. This approach offers several advantages as compared to the procedure described in EPA's GHG rule.

Investigation of a Model-Based Approach to Estimating Soot Loading Amount in Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filters

Abstract In order to meet the worldwide increasingly stringent particulate matter (PM) and particulate number (PN) emission limits, the diesel particulate filter (DPF) is widely used today and has been considered to be an indispensable feature of modern diesel engines. To estimate the soot loading amount in the DPF accurately and in real-time is a key function of realizing systematic and efficient applications of diesel engines, as starting the thermal regeneration of DPF too early or too late will lead to either fuel economy penalty or system reliability issues. In this work, an open-loop and on-line approach to estimating the DPF soot loading on the basis of soot mass balance is developed and experimentally investigated, through establishing and combining prediction models of the NOx and soot emissions out of the engine and a model of the catalytic soot oxidation characteristics of passive regeneration in the DPF.

The First Transportable Heavy Duty Vehicle Emissions Testing Laboratory

Growing concern about energy conservation and exhaust gas emissions from heavy duty engines of trucks and buses has increased the demand for the use of alternate fuels. A unique transportable testing laboratory designed to measure specific constituents of exhaust gas emissions from the engines of heavy duty vehicles operating on conventional or alternate fuels has been constructed by a team from West Virginia University. In this transportable facility, a special flat-bed trailer has been constructed to accommodate drive train units, free-rotating rollers, power-absorbing units to simulate road load, and flywheels to simulate vehicle inertia. Four hydraulic jacks are used to lower it to the ground at the fleet site. This allows the tested vehicle to be driven onto rollers embedded in the flat-bed. Hub adapters are connected at the outboard wheel locations at each side of the drive shaft of the vehicle.

Chatter Reduction in Machine Tools

In machining processes, self excited vibration or chatter is often a source of problems associated with poor surface finish and reduced tool life. Chatter has been recognized as the critical factor limiting productivity, since it prevents the full utilization of the installed power of the machine tool. The basic cause of chatter is the dynamic interaction of the cutting process and the machine tool structure. Chatter in the cutting process can be significantly reduced by altering the machine tool structure design and also by controlling the machining process. Two methods of reducing machine tool chatter will be addressed in this paper. First, the improvement in the design of the machine tool by selecting nontraditional structural material, and second, ways of improving the machining processs will be discussed.

Testing and Evaluating Properties of New Cereal Varieties for Machine Processing

Cereal grains are subjected to physical forces produced by agricultural machinery during and after harvest. The resulting physical damages have biological consequences such as reduced germination and yield. Damages may be minimized by adjusting equipment to take into account the physical resistance of grain to mechanical and dynamic loading. This paper describes methods for evaluating grain-to-ear binding force and grain physical resistance and presents the results for barley, rye, spring wheat and winter wheat varieties. Results of research on relationships between physical forces and biological effects on varieties of spring wheat and winter wheat are also presented and discussed.
