Mapping of Global Road Systems Based on Statistical Discriminant Analysis

Automotive manufacturers are facing continuously changing Global environment. Traditionally, these manufacturers relied on structural and general durability tests to validate vehicles. For these tests to remain representative of customer usage in a Global environment, the overall surface conditions of the Global road systems must be studied. Understanding and classifying these road systems conditions is an important step in dealing with vehicle durability in the Global environment. In this paper, an approach to mapping the world road systems into Established Roads (ER) and Developing Roads (DR), utilizing Statistical Discriminant Analysis (SDA), is presented. The classification of Global regions as DR and ER road systems can be effectively used to recommend appropriate development and validation tests for each road system. Removal of NOx from Diesel Exhausts: The New “Enhanced NH3-SCR” Reaction

Ammonia/urea-SCR is a mature technology, applied worldwide for the control of NOx emissions in combustion exhausts from thermal power plants, cogeneration units, incinerators and stationary diesel engines and more recently also from mobile sources. However a greater DeNOx activity at low temperatures is desired in order to meet more and more restrictive legislations. In this paper we report transient and steady state data collected over commercial Fe-ZSM-5 and V₂O₅-WO₃/TiO₂ catalysts showing high NOx reduction efficiencies in the 200 - 350°C T-range when NO and ammonia react with nitrates, e.g., in the form of an aqueous solution of ammonium nitrate. Under such conditions a new reaction occurs, the so-called "Enhanced SCR" reaction, 2 NH₃ + 2 NO + NH₄NO₃ → 3 N₂ + 5 H₂O.

Advancement in Vehicle Development Using the Auto Transfer Path Analysis

This paper presents the most recent advancement in the vehicle development process using the one-step or auto Transfer Path Analysis (TPA) in conjunction with the superelement, component mode synthesis, and automated multi-level substructuring techniques. The goal is to identify the possible ways of energy transfer from the various sources of excitation through numerous interfaces to given target locations. The full vehicle model, consists of superelements, has been validated with the detailed system model for all loadcases. The forces/loads can be from rotating components, powertrain, transfer case, chain drives, pumps, prop-shaft, differential, tire-wheel unbalance, road input, etc., and the receiver can be at driver/passenger ears, steering column/wheel, seats, etc. The traditional TPA involves two solver runs, and can be fairly complex to setup in order to ensure that the results from the two runs are consistent with subcases properly labeled as input to the TPA utility.

NLMPC for Real Time Path Following and Collision Avoidance

This paper presents a nonlinear control approach to achieve good performances in vehicle path following and collision avoidance when the vehicle is driving under cruise highway conditions. Nonlinear model predictive control (NLMPC) is adopted to achieve online trajectory control based on a simplified vehicle model. GMRES/Continuation algorithm is used to solve the online optimization problem. Simulations show that the proposed controller is capable of tracking the desired path as well as avoiding the obstacles.

Friction Estimation at Tire-Ground Contact

The friction estimation at the tire-ground contact is crucial for the active safety of vehicles. Friction estimation is a key problem of vehicle dynamics and the ultimate solution is still unknown. However the proposed approach, based on a simple idea and on a simple hardware, provides an actual solution. The idea is to compare the tire characteristic at a given friction (nominal characteristic) with the actual characteristic that the tire has while running. The comparison among these two characteristics (the nominal one and the actual one) gives the desired friction coefficient. The friction coefficient is expressed in vector form and a number of running parameters are identified. The mentioned comparison is an efficient but complex algorithm based on a mathematical formulation of the tire characteristic. The actual tire characteristic is somehow measured in real time by a relatively simple smart wheel which is able to detect the three forces and the three moments acting at the hub.

Numerical and Experimental Investigation on Vehicles in Platoon

Many studies have been carried out to optimize the aerodynamic performances of a single car or a single vehicle. In present days the traffic increases and sophisticated technologies are developing to guarantee the drivers safety, to minimize the fuel consumption and be more environmentally friendly. Within this research area a new technique that is being studied is Platooning: this means that different vehicles travel in a configuration that minimizes the aerodynamic drag and therefore the fuel consumption and the longitudinal space. In the present study platoons with different vehicles and configurations are taken into account, to analyze the influence of car shape and relative distance between the vehicles. The research has been carried out using CFD techniques to investigate the different flow fields around different platoons, while wind tunnel tests have been used to validate the results of the CFD simulations.

Using Simulation to Quantify Sine with Dwell Maneuver Test Metric Variability

The Sine with Dwell (SWD) maneuver is the basis for the NHTSA FMVSS-126 regulation. When put into effect, all vehicles under 10,000 lbs GVWR will need to pass this test. Understanding the variability in the yaw rate ratio and lateral displacement test metrics is important for vehicle design. Anything that influences vehicle handling can affect test metric variability. Vehicle handling performance depends largely on vertical tire patch loads, tire force and moment behavior, on slip angle, and camber angle. Tire patch loads are influenced, among other things, by weight distribution and (quasi-static and dynamic) roll-couple distribution. Tire force and moment relationships have a distinct shapes, but they all commonly rise to a peak value at a given slip angle value and then fall off with increasing slip angle. Severe handling maneuvers, like the SWD operate at slip angles that are at, or above, the peak lateral force.

A 2D Model for Tractor Tire-Soil Interaction: Evaluation of the Maximum Traction Force and Comparison with Experimental Results

The paper investigates the interaction between soil and tractor tires through a 2D numerical model. The tire is schematized as a rigid ring presenting a series of rigid tread bars on the external circumference. The outer profile of the tire is divided into a series of elements, each one able to exchange a normal and a tangential contact force with the ground. A 2D soil model was developed to compute the forces at the ground-tire interface: the normal force is determined on the basis of the compression of the soil generated by the sinking of the tire. The soil is modeled through a layer of springs characterized by two different stiffness for the loading (lower stiffness) and unloading (higher stiffness) condition. This scheme allows to introduce a memory effect on the soil which results stiffer and keeps a residual sinking after the passage of the tire. The normal contact force determines the maximum value of tangential force provided before the soil fails.

A Rough Road Ride Simulation Assessment with Flexible Vehicle Body

A rough road ride assessment provides an insightful evaluation of vehicle responses beyond the frequency range of suspension or steering modes. This is when body structure influence on the vehicle performance can be detected by vehicle occupants. In this paper, a rough road is used to evaluate vehicle ride performance and multi-body simulation (MBS) models are developed along with finite-element (FE) representations of the vehicle body and structure. To produce high fidelity simulation results in the frequency range of interest, various vehicle subsystem modeling contents are examined. A case study of a vehicle model with two different structures is provided. Time histories and frequency based analyses are used to obtain insights into the effects of body structure on vehicle responses. Finally, two metrics (‘Isolation’ and ‘Shake’) are used to distinguish the vehicle ride performance.

A Method for the Characterization of Off-Road Terrain Severity

Highway and roadway surface measurement is a practice that has been ongoing for decades now. This sort of measurement is intended to ensure a safe level of road perturbances. The measurement may be conducted by a slow moving apparatus directly measuring the elevation of the road, at varying distance intervals, to obtain a road profile, with varying degrees of resolution. An alternate means is to measure the surface roughness at highway speeds using accelerometers coupled with high speed distance measurements, such as laser sensors. Vehicles out rigged with such a system are termed inertial profilers. This type of inertial measurement provides a sort of filtered roadway profile. Much research has been conducted on the analysis of highway roughness, and the associated metrics involved. In many instances, it is desirable to maintain an off-road course such that the course will provide sufficient challenges to a vehicle during durability testing.

Vehicle Dynamics, Stability and Control

In the last years the number of electronic controllers of vehicle dynamics applied to chassis components has increased dramatically. They use lookup table of the primary order vehicle global parameters as yaw rate, lateral acceleration, steering angle, car velocity, that define the ideal behavior of the vehicle. They are usually based on PID controllers which compare the actual behavior of every measured real vehicle data to the desired behavior, from look up table. The controller attempts to keep the measured quantities the same as the tabled quantities by using ESP, TC (brakes and throttle), CDC (control shocks absorbers), EDIFF(active differential) and 4WS (rear wheels active toe). The performances of these controls are good but not perfect. The improvement can be achieved by replacement of the lookup tables with a fast vehicle model running in parallel to the real vehicle.

Aerodynamics In The Future

In the future, it will be possible to manufacture very small, robust machines, which may be attached to the surface of a wing allowing the classic boundary condition of “no-slip” to be altered at will. It is also possible that the heat transfer through the wing surface can be controlled. This paper reports an investigation into the possible benefits to aerodynamics that will occur if such machines become available. It is found that imposing an isothermal wing surface can increase the lift drag ratio of wing at transonic cruise and allowing slip at the surface can have the same effect. Both these effects are additive. It is found that control of heat transfer on a wing at hypersonic wing can act as a control device, comparable to that due a moderate flap deflection.

The original design-performance evaluation method of tracks and tracklaying vehicles, proposed by this writer during the WW II, was further developed and enhanced with new experience gained by many researchers. The method is based on the approximation of track action by a number of appropriate wheel actions. It is mathematically simple, and practically unique encompassing detailed track and road wheel geometry, wheel spacing, loads and load distribution together with regular soil strength parameters. It conforms methodologically with evaluation of pneumatic tires and rigid wheels, previously published in a series of SAE papers. The said papers and the present one form a concise engineering outline of Terramechanics for off-road locomotion.

Investigation of the Influence of Aero-Thermal Non-equilibrium Conditions of an SLD Cloud on Airfoil Icing

This study examines the impact of slip in aero-thermal conditions of supercooled large droplets (SLD) produced in an Icing Wind Tunnel (IWT) on the ice accretion characteristics. The study identifies potential biases in the SLD model development based on IWT data and numerical predictions that assume the SLD to be in aerothermal equilibrium with the IWT airflow. To obtain realistic temperature and velocity data for each droplet size class in the test section of the Braunschweig Icing Wind Tunnel (BIWT), a Lagrangian droplet tracking solver was used within a Monte Carlo framework. Results showed that SLDs experience considerable slips in velocity and temperature due to their higher inertia and short residence time in the Braunschweig IWT. Large droplets were found to be warmer and slower than the flow in the test section, with larger droplets experiencing larger aerothermal slips.

Put the Intelligence in the System, Not in the Vehicles

A unique system would solve traffic, fossil-fuel depletion, and environmental problems. Dual-mode private and commercial vehicles would be manually driven on streets and automatically controlled on maglev guideways. Busses and freight vehicles without wheels or drivers also used. Proposed guideway speeds: 100kph in cities, and 325kph between cities. System would be safer and have much higher capacity than existing highways or proposed “smart car” systems. One-third meter clearance between cars to be achieved by linear synchronous-motor propulsion. Capacity of single 100kph guideway to equal that of twelve highway lanes, and one 325kph guideway would be equivalent to forty highway lanes.

In-Tyre Sensors Induced Benefits on Sideslip Angle and Friction Coefficient Estimation

Aim of this study is to analyze the benefits of the measures provided by smart tyres on tyre-road friction coefficient and vehicle sideslip angle estimation. In particular, a smart tyre constituted by 2 tri-axial accelerometers glued on the tyre inner liner is considered which is able to provide the measures of the tyre-road contact forces once per wheel turn. These measures are added to the ones usually present onboard vehicle (steer angle, lateral acceleration and yaw rate) and following included into an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) based on a single-track vehicle model. Performance of the proposed observer is evaluated on a series of handling maneuvers and its robustness to road bank angle, tyre and vehicle parameters variation is discussed.

LTV MPC Vehicle Model for Autonomous Driving in Limit Conditions

The Linear Time Varying (LTV) Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a linear model predictive control based on linearization of the nonlinear vehicle model. The linearization is carried out consideing each vehicle state. The developed model is able to steer to avoid obstacles and follow a given path. Once the optimal parameters are found, both in terms of trajectory following and real-time performances, the LTV-MPC is used for assessing the limit vehicle conditions as a function of the vehicle forward target speed, the obstacle shape as well as the road conditions (both dry and wet road conditions were taken into account). It is shown that, to avoid collisions, given performances of the vehicle brakes and of the mounted sensors are required.

Shudder and Frictional Characteristics Evaluation of Dual Clutch Transmission Fluids

Under the initiative of The United States Council for Automotive Research LLC (USCAR) [1], we have developed and run comprehensive friction tests of dual clutch transmission fluids (DCTFs). The focus of this study is to quantify the anti-shudder durability over a simulated oil life of 75,000 shifts. We have evaluated six DCT fluids, including 2 fluids with known field shudder performance. Six different tests were conducted using a DC motor-driven friction test machine (GK test bench): 1. Force Controlled Continuous Slip, 2. Dynamic Friction, 3. Speed controlled Acceleration-Deceleration, 4. Motor-torque controlled Acceleration-Deceleration, 5. Static Friction, and 6. Static Break-Away. The test fluids were aged (with the clutch system) on the test bench to create a realistic aging of the entire friction system simultaneously.

Identification of Agricultural Tyres' Handling Characteristics from Full Vehicle Experimental Tests

For passenger cars, individual tyre model parameters, used in vehicle models able to simulate vehicle handling behavior, are traditionally derived from expensive component indoor laboratory tests as a result of an identification procedure minimizing the error with respect to force and slip measurements. Indoor experiments on agricultural tyres are instead more challenging and thus generally not performed due to tyre size and applied forces. However, the knowledge of their handling characteristics is becoming more and more important since in the next few years, all agricultural vehicles are expected to run on ordinary asphalt roads at a speed of 80km/h. The present paper presents a methodology to identify agricultural tyres' handling characteristics based only on the measurements carried out on board vehicle (vehicle sideslip angle, yaw rate, lateral acceleration, speed and steer angle) during standard handling maneuvers (step-steers, J-turns, etc.), instead than during indoor tests.
