Visualization of the Cavitating Flow inside the Nozzle Hole Using by Enlarged Acrylic Nozzle

In this study, it is purpose to make clear the effect of cavitation phenomenon on the spray atomization. In this report, the cavitation phenomenon inside the nozzle hole was visualized and the pressure measurements along the wall of the nozzle hole were carried out by use of 25-times enlarged acrylic nozzle. For the representatives of regular gasoline, single and two-component fuels were used as a test fuel. In addition, various cavitating flow patterns same as experimental conditions were simulated by use of Barotropic model incorporated in commercial code of Star-CD scheme, and compared with experimental results.

Visibility Requirements for Automobile CRT Displays - Color, Contrast and Luminance

Display devices are required to have some fundamental functions which are brightness & gradation, colorfullness, resolution & sharpness, response time, and suitable size of the picture. Since the CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) is superior to the other display devices in these requirements, it can offer much information efficiently and effectively. Their visibility should not be evaluated only on the basis of some standards for office automation systems. From the point of view of human factors, visibility investigations of the CRTs for automobiles are examined. In this paper the relationship between the chromaticity difference and the luminance contrast for drivers to read the picture easily, and the luminance of the background in the CRTs for drivers not to be dazzled in the nighttime driving are clarified.

Toyota EC-HYMATIC – A New Full Time 4WD System for Automatic Transmission

Toyota has developed a new full time 4WD system, called “EC-HYMATIC” or Electronically Controlled - HYdraulic Multi-plate clutch Active Traction Intelligent Control. This system permits an automatic torque transfer, depending on driving conditions, for front and rear wheels under control of the speed difference between the two. The system developed consists of a center differential, a speed difference control clutch system employing multi-plate clutch, and a gear set for rear axle drive. The speed difference control clutch system is controlled by a unique electro-hydraulic system using a microcomputer. An extensive use of computer simulations and vehicle test and evaluation has successfully developed an appropriate control strategy for the clutch system. The new 4WD system, EC-HYMATIC, considerably improves handling characteristics, traction performance and stability of a 4WD vehicle.

Thermal Flow Analysis of Hybrid Transaxle Surface Using Newly-Developed Heat Flux Measurement Method

This research developed a new measurement technology for thermal analysis of the heat radiation from a hybrid transaxle case surface to the air and improved the heat radiation performance. This heat flux measurement technology provides the method to measure heat flux without wiring of sensors. The method does not have effects of wiring on the temperature field and the flow field unlike the conventional methods. Therefore, multipoint measurement of heat flux on the case surface was enabled, and the distribution of heat flux was quantified. To measure heat flux, thermal resistances made of plastic plates were attached to the case surface and the infrared thermography was used for the temperature measurement. The preliminary examination was performed to confirm the accuracy of the thermal evaluation through heat flux measurement. The oil in the transaxle was heated and the amount of heat radiation from the case surface was measured.

Thermal Analysis of Timing Belt

This paper describes an analysis of the rise in timing belt temperature occuring under high engine speed operation that was made to establish the cause of heat deterioration of the belt materials. Surface temperatures of the belt were accurately measured by correcting thermo-vision detected radiations to eliminate environmental radiation. The temperature profile of a belt cross-section was obtained by a specially developed thermo-couple device. The experimental results indicated that heat generated by the belt contributes significantly to the temperature rise and that the primary cause of the heat generation is bending hysteresis of the belt cords. In addition, a description is made of a method of calculating the rate of heat generation in the belt. In this simulation method, the energy dissipated as heat is calculated from the bending strains and loss moduli of the belt materials. Calculated results were found to agree well with experimental results.

The Color Specification of Surrogate Roadside Objects for the Performance Evaluation of Roadway Departure Mitigation Systems

Roadway departure mitigation systems for helping to avoid and/or mitigate roadway departure collisions have been introduced by several vehicle manufactures in recent years. To support the development and performance evaluation of the roadway departure mitigation systems, a set of commonly seen roadside surrogate objects need to be developed. These objects include grass, curbs, metal guardrail, concrete divider, and traffic barrel/cones. This paper describes how to determine the representative color of these roadside surrogates. 24,762 locations with Google street view images were selected for the color determination of roadside objects. To mitigate the effect of the brightness to the color determination, the images not in good weather, not in bright daylight and under shade were manually eliminated. Then, the RGB values of the roadside objects in the remaining images were extracted.

Structural and Material Changes in the Aging Thorax and Their Role in Crash Protection for Older Occupants

The human body undergoes a variety of changes as it ages through adulthood. These include both morphological (structural) changes (e.g., increased thoracic kyphosis) and material changes (e.g., osteoporosis). The purpose of this study is to evaluate structural changes that occur in the aging bony thorax and to assess the importance of these changes relative to the well-established material changes. The study involved two primary components. First, full-thorax computed tomography (CT) scans of 161 patients, age 18 to 89 years, were analyzed to quantify the angle of the ribs in the sagittal plane. A significant association between the angle of the ribs and age was identified, with the ribs becoming more perpendicular to the spine as age increased (0.08 degrees/year, p=0.012). Next, a finite element model of the thorax was used to evaluate the importance of this rib angle change relative to other factors associated with aging.

Stability of a One Box Type Vehicle in a Cross-Wind-An Analysis of Transient Aerodynamic Forces and Moments

One-box type vehicles are especially liable to a loss of stability when entering a region of cross-wind. The reasons for this instability were investigated using scale models and by means of a mathematical simulation. Results indicated that yawing moment attains a peak at a precise position of the vehicle relative to the cross-wind. Visualization of the air flow and measurement of the pressure distributions established the cause of the phenomenon. Furthermore a study was conducted into the effects of body shape on stability and the efficacy of various modifications was assessed.

Simulator Motion Sickness Evaluation Based on Eye Mark Recording during Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex

The driving simulator (DS) developed by Toyota Motor Corporation simulates acceleration using translational (XY direction) and tilting motions. However, the driver of the DS may perceive a feeling of rotation generated by the tilting motion, which is not generated in an actual vehicle. If the driver perceives rotation, a vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is generated that results in an unnecessary correction in the driver's gaze. This generates a conflict between the vestibular and visual sensations of the driver and causes motion sickness. Although such motion sickness can be alleviated by reducing the tilting motion of the DS, this has the effect of increasing the amount of XY motion, which has a limited range. Therefore, it is desirable to limit the reduction in the tilting motion of the DS to the specific timing and amount required to alleviate motion sickness. However, the timing and extent of the VOR has yet to be accurately identified.

Safety Impact Methodology (SIM) for Effectiveness Estimation of a Pre-Collision System (PCS) by Utilizing Driving Simulator Test and EDR Data Analysis

Pre-collision system (PCS) that basically consists of warning buzzer, brake-assist and automatic brake functions is designed to help mitigate injury occurring in frontal impacts where preceding vehicles are impacted from the rear. Since the benefit of each function is influenced by drivers' reaction before collision, it is difficult to estimate quantitative effectiveness for improvement. This paper proposes an approach to establish a Safety Impact Methodology (SIM) for the effectiveness estimation of a PCS by utilizing driving simulator (DS) test results and Event Data Recorder (EDR) data. The estimation procedure consists of four steps. Firstly, the PCS functions were modeled as linear transfer functions with gain, delay, etc. Test vehicle's properties were measured and modeled as an example. Secondly, the transfer functions were applied to each DS test result, and the speed reduction from travel speed to impact speed was calculated by the model assuming that PCS was installed.

We have taken notice of Zn-Fe alloy electroplating with an eye to developing new corrosion-resistant steel sheets for automotive use with both cosmetic corrosion resistance and perforating corrosion resistance, and as a result of investigations into its paintability and corrosion resistance over the whole range of its compositions, we have come to a conclusion that steel sheets with two-layer Zn-Fe alloy electroplating that consists of a thin upper layer with a 75 to 85% Fe content and a lower layer with a 10 to 20% Fe content is the best choice.

Poisoning Deactivations of Automotive Catalysts by Lead and Phosphorus

The deactivation process of automotive catalysts by lead and phosphoruos were studied. The accelerated poisoning test were performed. The activity evaluation and characterisation of poisoned pellet oxidation catalysts showed the following origin of poisoning deactivations. Lead interacts with active materials and phosphorus covers over catalysts to reduce these catalytic performance. In the case of phosphorus and lead co-existence, the activity decreases rapidly because leadphosphate plugges pores of the support. In monolithic catalysts, highly axial distributions of poisons was obserbed. This characteristic distribution is advantageous for the durability of the catalyst.

Numerical Analysis of Side Impact Phenomena Using MADYMO-3D DOT-SID Dummy

In the present investigation, a numerical model of side impact dummy (DOT-SID) is developed using TNO's MADYMO-3D multi-body features. During the model construction phases, relevant dummy components are individually modeled and are verified against empirical test results. The completed DOT-SID model is then integrated into a padded impactor model to simulate secondary-impact. Computations are run for several input force-deflection distributions, in conjunction with other parameters. From the results, occupant responses to various thoracic input are quantitatively sought, and the effectiveness of the MADYMO DOT-SID model as a vehicle development tool is assessed.

The development of a high tech image analog cluster providing good readability is required by today's customer. To satisfy this trend, we have developed a highly unique analog cluster, which features very sharp white lit pointers with evenly illuminated white dials on a black acrylic face. These features are primarily achieved through two new lighting sources: 1. Pointers made from thin, lightweight Cold Cathode Discharge Tubes. This pointer creates very high brightness, regardless of temperature, by enclosing xenon gas in the tube, and was designed into a single side electrode structure. 2. Circular shape Cold Cathode Tube Installed Behind Each Dial Applique. This application creates very bright high quality illumination. In this session, we would like to introduce the construction and system of two new lighting sources for lexus, LS400. This technology provide improved readability.

Mechanism of Intake Valve Deposit Formation Part III: Effects of Gasoline Quality

Quality control of gasoline constituents and its effect on the Intake Valve Deposits (IVD) has become a recent issue. In this paper, the effects of gasoline and oil quality on intake valve deposits were investigated using an Intake Valve Deposit Test Bench and a Sludge Simulator. The deposit formation from the gasoline maximized at an intake valve temperature of approximately 160 °C, and the deposits formed from the engine oil were maximum at approximately 250 °C. Therefore, the contribution of the gasoline or the engine oil appears to depend on the engine conditions. The gasoline which contains MTBE or ethanol with no detergent additive slightly increases the deposition amount. The gasoline with a superior detergent significantly decreases the deposition amount even when MTBE or ethanol is blended in the gasoline. Appropriate detergent fuel additive retards the oil deterioration.

This system consists of two revolution sensors and two sets of optical fiber array, photoelectric elements, and microprocessor, which fiber array is so arranged that it faces the brake disc rotor. This new system has the following features: (1) Measuring is made using a visible radiation wavelength range for red hot temperatures higher than 550°C.

Long-Term Evolution of Straight Crossing Path Crash Occurrence in the U.S. Fleet: The Potential of Intersection Active Safety Systems

Intersection collisions currently account for approximately one-fifth of all crashes and one-sixth of all fatal crashes in the United States. One promising method of mitigating these crashes and fatalities is to develop and install Intersection Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (I-ADAS) on vehicles. When an intersection crash is imminent, the I-ADAS system can either warn the driver or apply automated braking. The potential safety benefit of I-ADAS has been previously examined based on real-world cases drawn from the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey (NMVCCS). However, these studies made the idealized assumption of full installation in all vehicles of a future fleet. The objective of this work was to predict the reduction in Straight Crossing Path (SCP) crashes due to I-ADAS systems in the United States over time. The proportion of new vehicles with I-ADAS was modeled using Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) fleet penetration predictions.

Large Eddy Simulation of Spray Injection to Turbulent Duct Flow from a Slit Injector

The behavior of spray injections to turbulent duct flows from a slit injector for direct-injection gasoline engines was investigated using a combination of large eddy simulation (LES) and Lagrangian discrete droplet model (DDM). As a result, diffusion of droplets in stronger turbulent flows was observed at a later stage of the injection. Moreover, we compared calculation and experimental results by generating a pseudo-particle image from the calculation result.
